How do I choose a business?....There are so many....

When I evaluate a company, I look for these key points. Keep in mind, when I join a company, my #1 goal is to make money and to do it legitimately. I do not want to hurt anyone or rip anyone off. This is what I’ve learned and these guidelines will help you determine what company is right for you.
If you are not making at least 75% of the upfront commission when you make a sale, forget it. This means that you are doing all the work and the company and/or the person above you is making all the money.
If you have to have 1000, 10,000 or 20,000 people in your organization before you make any real money. DO NOT Join. Most people will NEVER get there.
If they teach you to hold home parties and invite all your friends. Run away fast.
If they have a sales pitch 2-3 times a day and only 2-3 training classes per week. This means that the company is more interested in selling you than training you how to make money long term
If you can’t break even or get into profit with 3 sales, forget it.
If you can’t speak with the owners or the corporate office via phone or webinar, Forget it. I like to know who I am doing business with before I will do business with them.
If it is a start up or in pre launch, forget. The chances of these companies becoming the next Amway is about as good as winning the lottery. At least with the lottery, you have a chance to win once or twice a week. You might as well go to Vegas and blow your money on a good time. At least you’ll have some great memories, see a great show and have a great meal.
These are not all the rules for success on the internet, but this is a great guideline to follow when evaluating an internet company. Use these guidelines to help you narrow down your choices for choosing a company that best fits yours goals.

Free resource

I've been reading this stuff lately - it's a book about 130 pages long that I think has been OCR'ed into web pages. The information is good, but dated. The author presents a variety of fundamentals for investors and while many of the references offered won't pan out any more, the basic approaches are still valid.

The information appears to be from 1962. The money examples would have still been silver then, so scaling up by a factor of 20 would make the examples a bit more appropriate for today.

Also, the laws have changed since this book came out, so there's another area that needs to be compensated for.

Still, I think that the resource was worth more than I paid for it.

John Cummuta & Dave Ramsey

Two personal finance guru's, John Cummuta & Dave Ramsey, seem to have the right idea to getting rich. Slowly. I talk more indebth about these guys at my blog (http://www.debtfree4ever.net). However, in a nut shell they both teach cutting up your credit cards, paying off you debt, once 1 debt is paid apply that payment to the next so that everything including the mortgage is paid off faster. Then they differ, one says to build a savings during this time, the other says to build it after all the debt are paid. Cummuta says to make payments everyweek instead of once a month so as to cut the interest that you are paying. If you ask me both these guys make sense and if everyone would follow their advice to a tee, everyone in America would be millionaires.
Do I advocate buying the CD's and books, no. With carefull research, you can get the same info for free. In fact I just gave it to you. Thing is some of you will call me a cook and ignore it.

I am on over 30 Tribes and only a couple of them have a post here or there. Is Tribe.net a dieing social network? There seems to be more activity on MySpace and YahooGroups.

If it weren't for the spammers, AdSense, and MLM offers there would be no activity in most tribes....

Location as a matter of success?

Does where you live really matter as a fundemental element of your success? I would really like to learn about commercial real estate investing (from apartments to strip malls) from management and development to aquistion and cash flow analysis, etc.

I am considering moving to a small town atmosphere (quality of life reasons) where most of these types of investments would take place elsewhere.

My ideal situation would be to get an entry level position with a company that specializes in real estate investment and learn the ropes. I am not interested in buying flipping or renting SFRs, foreclosures etc.

Am I limiting my growth potential by moving to a small town? Should I suck it up and find an entry level job where ever I can and then take that experience to the small town with me to develop the lifestyle I want...?

Always looking for the path of least resistance, after all.

I started reading a book recently called "The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid" published by the Wharton School.

It has an interesting premise. Even though consumers in the developing world may not have much cash, it is still possible to make money selling to them. And... the locals better themselves as they act as distributors, provides services related to the product, etc. It can be a win-win situation.

Many of the business ideas I have could make excellent small or home businesses for someone who is dedicated and able to focus. I cannot focus on one thing at a time, there for unsuccessful in starting any of the ideas I have.

Pro Forma Help?

Hello everyone.

I'm trying to develop a pro forma projections statement for a new software business, and quite frankly I'm having a hell of a hard time with it. Any masters of the trade around? My problem seems to be a lack of knowledge about how to organize a multitude of numbers and figures so that they are able to be properly referenced, adjusted and grown as necessary. In other words, I'm constantly losing track of what went where, and so on.

I've never taken any business-planning classes, and I have yet to find a book which details good techniques for developing and tracking the data in such a document. This is driving me insane, because it's essentially the last key point of an otherwise strong business plan. Does anyone know about any pre-developed Excel macros that can track all of this stuff at least semi-automatically? I'm at my wits' end.

start small and work your way up

This is how I did it:
I started with $200 and a Master Card debit card, purchased from Safeway.
I searched the internet for wholesale companies.
I picked two, Leg Avenue (that sells women's clothes) and Chemical Light Inc. (glow novelities).
I made an order with Chemical light for glow sticks and necklaces. I would sell these at parks and events near nightfall, just wandering around. Made some good money. Then I would put $250 on the debit card and buy clothes from Leg Ave and sell them to the high school and college girls, and made more money.
Several years later, I do festivals, sci-fi/fantasy conventions, and fairs selling the same stuff and more.
If you want the money bad enough, you have to work for it every day for a while to cushion yourself.
I want to open a brick and mortar, so I'm trying to come up with ideas to make extra cash to pay for the expansion. All without investors, business plans or bosses.

Too young, dumb, and broke--but still trying

Hello to all! Here's my problem: I'm in my 20s, looking to start an arcade in my area. It is something with an obvious need/market (there is only 1 major arcade on the other side of town), but I have NO money, no credit, and no degree (yet). My partner is in the same predicament. I don't want to wait ten years to start this business--chances are that by that time, another arcade will have already come into town. SBA doesn't seem to offer a lot of hope. Any tips/help?

Fund raising

I'm taking a trip to Australia this summer as part of an organization called People to People Student Ambassadors. To give you a brief overview, People to People was an organization started by President Eisenhower to send students to other countries to experience their countries and promote peace through understanding. I traveled with them last year to France and Italy, and would like to continue to travel with them for the next two years of my High School career.

But money is tight. I had to borrow money last year, and I'm not a man to left my debts unpaid. But this is my future we're talking about and I don't want to give up. I'm only making $100 a week, and I think I have around $2000 to go. Someone had mentioned Corporate Sponsorship to me. Does anyone know anything any companies that may be willing to sponsor me, or where I might at least start?

I recently moved into the city of SF and created my own massage therapy business inside of a salon. I have spent a majority of my funds moving, establishing myself, as well as the fee’s required for permits, etc... To give a brief overview of the situation I was the top therapist in a spa for two years and decided to go out on my own by the advice given to me by the majority of my clientele, yet it turns out I am a better at massaging than I am with marketing and advertizing. I have tried fliers, complementary trials, internet AD’s, and discount rates with minimal success. In my years of body work I have come to understand that word of mouth is the primary source of advertizing, however if I don’t get clients there can be no work of mouth. If anyone has some suggestions on how to help build a clientele I would be most appreciative.

I have a project that is in pre-finance stage, or perhaps dream stage. It is not ready to go to a mortgage broker or some other finance type (nothing against them).

Right now I have a plan that involves investing roughly $500,000.00 in Belize real estate (Belize is a lovely English speaking country in Central America).
