Mandara is honored to be teaching two workshops as part of Lynchburg’s Kaleidoscope Arts Festival (http://www.lynchburgevents.com) and to be part of Lynchburg Tribal’s Second Annual Hafla.

Nancy McAndrews of Lynchburg Tribal will also be teaching an Intro to Mendhi (Henna) workshop from 3:15 – 4:15 pm. The hafla performances will begin at 7 pm and will feature dancers from around the state as well as live music.

You can find the registration form here on tribe at http://tribes.tribe.net/mandara/photos/818b0808-92d5-4501-91cb-1fba6a5a5fb2 and at our website at http://mandaradance.com/Workshops.htm

Best,
Jennifer

Belly Dance Drills and Conditioning
In this class, students will begin by exploring the use of the abdomen, chest, spine and pelvis through a series of yoga postures and dynamic flows. Using Pilates strengthening and stabilizing exercises as well as yoga-based breathing techniques, students will work to develop flexible, fluid strength and most of all, an increased awareness of their bodies. Students will then drill fundamental belly dance isolations and practice layering these moves together at different tempos as well as with level changes traveling moves. This class is best suited for those with previous belly dance experience and who have a strong understanding of basic, fundamental belly dance moves. The focus of this class is to give participants the tools and awareness to safely prepare and condition one’s self for the dance.

Indo-Fusion Belly Dance
Mandara has created a unique fusion of belly dance inspired by classical (Bharatanatyam and Kathak) and folkloric (Rajasthani Kalbeliya) styles of Indian dance. In this workshop, they will share with you some of the histories and backgrounds of these rich dances so that you can understand and appreciate the roots and essences of these dances. Then you will learn steps, combinations and energetics that celebrate the spirit of these dance forms while incorporating some belly dance techniques.

This was such a great class! I have to admit to owning both of the anatomy books that Jennifer was using for reference, but haven't had time or desire to really dig into them UNTIL Jennifer rekindled my desire to learn more anatomy!

I am teaching an Anatomy for Belly Dancers class at Darbukastani Independence Days (aka DID) in Stuart, VA this year, and I wanted to see what y'all ;) might want to learn. Since we only have an hour to address muscles, bones, and joints as they relate to the physical mechanics and anatomy of belly dance, what types of things would you most like to walk away with at the end of that class?

Anatomy geek here could teach at least a whole semester on this. However, I need to streamline it to the most important points I can cover in that short time frame. Any feedback you can give would be greatly appreciated. What would you want to learn?

Thanks!

Remembering Reema

I just wanted to share some fellow dancers’ remembrances of Reema. - Jennifer

As you all know, we here at SalsaTech are truly a diverse community and
we are composed of hundreds of students, faculty, and staff. It is with great sadness that we report to you the tragic loss of one of the brightest and most charismatic members of our community, Reema Samaha.

She had many close friends at Virginia Tech, and a beautiful message
has been written in her honor from those very close to her (message appears at bottom of this email). Please take the time to read about a young woman whose impact on a community is only revealed through the direst and most unfortunate of circumstances.

Through talking and coping with some friends these past few days, it
was seldom difficult to come to a consensus about Reema; she came to nearly every Wednesday Night Salsa Massive, and was the embodiment of what we as Hokies strive to be. Each time I and many others would have to chase her around the club for the opportunity to dance with her, and regardless of fatigue, unfamiliarity, or time she would always say “yes” to a request.

This was a testament to her character. And aside from being a beautiful and diverse dancer, what I will forever remember most is her feverish smile and soul-touching laughter spanning the entirety of each dance; never has a post-dance “thank you sooo much” been as sincere as the one given each time to Reema, which was a ripple effect of the warmth and genuine enjoyment that seemed to so readily diffuse from her. She truly had the ability to light up a room.

And Reema Samaha was but one of a number of innocent lives taken from
the Virginia Tech community. Please keep every single life lost in your hearts and minds, and offer comfort to their families should you be given the opportunity.

From all of the members of SalsaTech, past and present, we wish to
extend not only our condolences, but more importantly our support for those affected by this tragedy, for we must not let this sadness or anger define the path we choose to follow in the process of mending such deep and seemingly endless wounds.

With eternal love and salsolidarity,
The SalsaTech family
Brian T. Murphy, The Postmaster
--------------------------------------------
Message from the Contemporary Dance Ensemble:

The Contemporary Dance Ensemble has spent the recent days together
mourning the loss of our close friend and fellow dancer, Reema Samaha. We also spent this time remembering the year that we got to spend together. The first thing we all remembered was the day she auditioned for the group. After just a few minutes we were so taken by her dancing that we knew that she would fit perfectly into our group. She was a beautiful girl with big almond eyes and an irresistible smile. Her dancing was not just moves put together, but she lived dance. Her
whole body felt the dance and she was completely captivating to watch.

Two days before the tragic events at Virginia Tech, the Contemporary
Dance Ensemble had its semi-annual show. This was Reema’s first year in the group and she had choreographed a belly dancing piece for the event. Although her fellow CDE members had no experience in belly dance, Reema explained everything in such a way that the experience was not only a success but everyone looked forward to going to her rehearsals every week. In addition to her own dance, Reema participated in 6 other dances choreographed by other members and shined in each dance she was in. Audience members noticed her outstanding
talent in each piece. Reema embraced every style of dance, and that energy radiated to the audience.

After the show, Reema’s parents talked to a few of our members. They
told one member about how well Reema was doing at her first year at Tech and how proud they were of her. They said that she had really blossomed here and they were very happy for her. This was definitely a truthful statement. If you walked around campus with her, every minute or so she would stop to talk to another friend she saw walking by. She was immediate friends with everyone she met and she had a certain presence about her that made people instantly drawn to her. She was excited about all events on campus and was involved in many groups.
Everything she did, she did it with drive and pure enthusiasm.

Reema has left a mark on the Contemporary Dance Ensemble and the group
will forever be changed by her contributions over the past year. We all
mourn the loss of such a beautiful dancer and human being and our hearts feel for her family. We wish that her family will find comfort in knowing that Reema’s life has touched many people and that she will be loved forever.
Memorial Fund for Reema

A memorial fund is being created in Reema’s honor. Here is what we know so far. As we know more, we will post it here. - Jennifer

The following was posted on bhuz by Souzan:

The response from the Bhuz community has been wonderful! I think
seeing Reema's pictures and videos and hearing from her family about
how much she loved dance and live has hit us all very personally. And
I am pleased that I can help you all find a way to memoralize a young
life that ended too soon.

I just spoke with the director of gifts at the Virginia Tech
Development Foundation about setting up a memorial fund in the name
of Reema Samaha, the young Lebaneses American middle eastern dancer
who was killed in the terrible attack on Monday.

The foundation will set up a fund in Reema's name that we can donate
any amount we want to into. For the time being the purpose for which
the fund would be used is being listed as assisting a VT student who
is a member of the Middle Eastern Dance Association at that
university. Mr. Clark, the gentleman I spoke to, suggested this
designation until it is determined how much money might be donated.
The amount of money would determine whether it would be a one-time
gift or an annual award.

The foundation will be getting back to me with details about how to
make donations once they have the actual account for the fund set up.

In addition to personal gifts, you might consider making donations
from the proceeds of haflas or other events. If there is enough money
in the fun it could be used for a scholarship for a young woman
studying dance at the university.

More information soon.
Yup. It is official. I am a dorky belly dancer.

So this past weekend I went to a Big Bad Voodoo Daddy concert in Winston-Salem, NC. They are a *swing* music band. No Middle Eastern/belly dance influences whatsoever. So instead of clapping and cheering like a normal person would at the end of a song, I let out a zaghareet. Yup. A zaghareet for a big band type of band while in a honky-tonk night club atmosphere. Got a few strange looks. Go figure. ;) The funniest thing was that it didn’t even occur to me until after I did it that it may not be venue appropriate. It was “song done, time to cheer, out comes a zaghareet”. It was just like I would do if I was watching a belly dance performance. I have been conditioned. I feel so Pavlovian.

So has anyone else ever fallen back on a belly dance behavior in a non-belly dance environment/situation?

This year will be even better than last year, with a gorgeous new venue with an ACTUAL STAGE, Pura's NEW CLASS OFFERINGS, not one but 2 days of fun, an Afterparty and mo', mo' mo'! Asheville is slowly wising up and gettin' sophisticated.

And speaking of the show, we have just a few performance slots left, so if you wish to share a stage with the likes of FatChance's own Carolena, Megha, the Fates of Atlanta, Baraka Mundi and more, email me right away!

Tribal:Pura arrives in Asheville, NC for the weekend of July 8-9, 2006...

Have a great night!

Gecko and Pat - Thank you soooo much for coming all the way down to this corner of VA to drum of us and make us "real" performers ;). It means so much to us to have friends like you. We are blessed. We raise a goblin mug filled with adult beverage in your honor.

Aesa - Thank you for driving all the way down from your home base to support us. It was great to see so many smiling faces and hear all the zaghareets out there supporting us. You rock!

Looking for performers for Niger food crisis benefit

Hey kids,
i am planing a Niger food crisis benefit for sept 10th 7-10pm in sterling VA and i am looking for a few performers willing to dance and raise money for people in need. we buy Jewlery from these tribes so i think it is also upto us to try to help them out. all of the tips and money raised at this event will go toward feeding these people in need...
looking for 4-5 solo dancers 5-8 min sets.
please email belladonna@belladonnadance for more info.
thanks!
Belladonna

bellow is the posting from the Indigo tribe, who started spreading this awarness....
follow the link to the wbsite for more info on the food crisis.
Fulani, Tuareg, Woodabe Photos
These posts about the crisis in Africa relate to this tribe in a number of ways:

1) Yoga: These tribal people need help... consideration and non-violence is AHIMSA... if we see pain and do nothing, that is violence. Maybe this is an extreme viewpoint, but it's the way I feel...

2) Art: As lovers of adornment and beauty we must safeguard these tribal arts and the people who continue the traditions.

3) Dance: this is a cause we can all get behind! This is a reason to dance! Create a hafla! Post photos from Africa Adorned all over the room! Donate your tips! Gather your friends! LET'S GET IT DONE!

4) The Indigo: This company takes it's name from the Indigo dye that's used by the Tuareg people among others, and we've been GREATLY influenced by the arts of these people.

I know you may feel you don't have cash, but think of it this way: your electric bill will be late. Their BABY will be dead. The goat which gives milk to feed the whole tribe will DIE... Their way of life and folk arts will DIE. Which is more final?

Their entire way of LIFE is at risk, and the apathy of the world ushers it on...
