People Want to Know 'bout Mardi

There's a tribe called Bellydance Reviews that offers up a place to get information about teachers, vendors, video/dvds, and events. It's meant to be an honest resource for bellydancers in our community. Face it - a lot of bellydancers have to carefully budget their spending on their art, and knowing where they can get the best training or information is super helpful.

So, there's a thread on Bellydance Reviews asking about Mardi and what to expect from her workshops, etc. It hasn't gotten a lot of response yet. I thought that since many people here have had that experience, that I might take the opportunity to ask if you would show up to the tribe and post your experiences. Seeing as Mardi is coming to my neck of the woods later this year, I am eager to hear about your experiences.

Just spent 2 days doing Mardi workshops here in Amsterdam........fantastic!

I wasn't into tribal workshops anymore 'cause I was sick of spending workshop time doing more yoga/sit ups/glut sqeezes than dancing itself but Mardi's workshops were exactly what I've been pining for.....dance, dance dance......not a downward dog or sit up in sight!!

Bliss.

I'm now an official Mardi fan!

Hi all!

The insanely talented Moria just came to Florida for a two-day workshop, and during the makeup section of day two she raved about a product that added some seriously cool shimmer. She got it directly from Mardi (birthday present, I think) and it was called something like Voodoo Love and was basically just flakes of mica. Does anyone know if it's possible to order this? Does anyone else own some? Has anyone else ever heard of it? Is anyone listening? Does anyone care?

Any help would be extremely...helpful!

day one delivers combinations for quicker tempos. using combinations in improvisational dance is a good way to keep your head whilst striving for variety and contrast. movements will be broken down and drilled. combinations will be joined together to form a short, original choreography. some belly dance experience highly recommended.

*Sunday, March 16th
the sweet and low down.
another day another dance, but today drops itself into a jar of molasses. mardi presents combinations borne out of her slow-dancin bag of tricks. new movements are introduced, as well as new takes on some basic slower moves in the tribal repertoire. some belly dance experience highly recommended.

Attendee feedback, and made several changes and upgrades accordingly. Please

Some highlights include: We have added a Specialty Class room to focus on our
regions specifics dancers needs - including classes specifically geared toward
advanced and professional dancers, prop classes and specialty topics. These
classes are limited to only 15 participants, space is limited, so register early to
reserve your spot.

We have also changed our location to Athens, GA to ease our attendees' experience.
The new location is at the Athens Classic Center, with easy access to parking, food,
hotels and all SFF 2008 events.

This year we have increased our instructors with many options gear specifically to
tribal and cabaret attendees. Expect a weekend packed with classes, shopping, great
shows and a ton of fun!

i went to whole foods to grab some lunch supplies for the week and went looking for the amy & brian coconut juice. found it in the juice isle (which i'm rarely in there so no wonder i'd never seen it).

i am hooked now! no more hacking open a coconut to get juice when that's all i want! woo hoo, it's a brand new world. well... maybe not that earth shattering. ^_~

*Mardi Love* (USA) is also coming to 'the Dream' and will be teaching 2 workshops on June 21st and 22nd and also will perform in the show.

Mardi Love is currently working and performing with The Indigo. A former member of Urban Tribal Belly Dance, she moved from San Diego to the Bay Area in 2004. She is a major influence on the costuming and choreographic style of The Indigo.

You (and the rest of the dancers) were amazing! I especially loved the bit with the cards and the dance that made me think of a twisted marionette jewelry box. The costumes and choreographies were fabulous! I loved the carnivale/saloon girl/macabre flavor.

Yesterday I received the new DVD by Tobias Roberson with Rachel Brice & Mardi Love, “Finger Cymbals for Belly Dance,” and just wanted to say it is absolutely wonderful! Maridi and Rachel’s performances at the end are incredible! Mardi is so adorable! Tobias is insightful and gives very detailed instruction. I highly recommend!

Mardi's workshop question

I took Mardi's workshop in Alb last weekend and it was great! I have a question because I failed to write something down. Maya-Omi. Let me see if I get this straight-- it's a half maya with an omi (what exactly is the omi, I totally forgot what I was doing!) and I know they go clockwise. Can anyone straighten me out?

The Indigo in Albuquerque - September 7-9th

Mardi Love Teaching w/ The Indigo in Lexington KY!!!!

Teresa is having computer issues and wanted me to post the information here regarding this event:

Rachel, Mardi, Zoe and Tobias will each be teaching 3 hours. That's 12 hours of instruction in two days.

The order of classes will be: Rachel Sat. AM, Tobias Sat. P.M., Zoe Sun. AM, Mardi Sun. PM. Specific times will be provided as soon as Teresa's computer is up again.

$65 per class for early registration (received at least 7 days prior to the event)
$75 per class the week of the workshop or at the door (if space is available)

$200 all four classes early registration (received at least 7 days prior the the event)
$265 all four classes the week of the workshop or at the door (if space available)

Understated Elegance

I had the great pleasure of seeing The Indigo in their 'Le Serpent Rouge' show Wednesday in Portland and something that crossed my mind was how elegant Mardi was.
All three of those ladies just kick ass, but while Zoe is hot and crazy and all poppy and funky and Rachel is the little, cute and silly master contortionist, Mardi sort of seemed like the quiet, sweet, mature older sister of the three... Ya know?
She has this beautiful understated elegance about her... not flashy or crazy, but calm, cool and collected... With an old-time gracefulness and almost demure sense about her.... Obviously, I don't know much about who they are off stage, but that's what I felt from their stage presence... Three muses...
Anyway.... I just thought I'd share that... I love all three of them and would love to see them again and again... The show was amazing...

I was wondering if anyone who attended Mardi's Seattle workshop on July 7th new the names of the music she played before the choreography?? Specifically, there was one really amazing piece that was (I believe) solely drums, at least in the beginning.

The names of ANY of the songs she used would be great, though!

Hello girls,
During the Aiwah Festival (06/09), we will introduce Mardi's performance. We would like to present her the very best way, something Extraordinary, exceptionel.... like she is.
As I never saw her "in live" in a performance, only on DVD, I know emotions are not the same. For those of you who are lucky and have seen her, please feel inspire and give us some of your feelings here.
I precise that in France, very very few people know about tribal fusion style.
Then I'll do a "sum up" of all these ideas.

Carolena Nericcio and Megha Gavin teach ATS General Skills Certification workshop Sept 7 through 9th, 2007 in Toronto Canada.

The general skills intensive is a 15 hour course, usually taken at the FCBD studio, with Carolena teaching. With only 20 people in Toronto, you will have Carolena and Megha teaching and coaching. You will receive instruction in anatomy as it applies to dance, music theory, instruction in all FCBD steps and concepts, drills, critique and question and answer time.

In order to attend this workshop, you MUST have prior ATS knowledge either via class, workshop or FCBD instructional dvds. This is a must - not an option. Usually a dvd or in-person assessment is required in order to qualify for registration, but this has been waived for this event. Do not disappoint Carolena or Megha - be well prepared with the material. All volumes of FCBD dvds can be purchased through Cleopatra's Bazaar or directly from FCBD.

Once completed, you will receive a General Skills for ATS certificate. It should be noted that completing this certification does not qualify one to be an authorized ATS teacher.

Also included in the registration are gourmet catered vegetarian lunches each day, water and juice for all participants.

Fri-Sat-Sun
Registration & warm up 9:30-10 am
Class 10 am - 12:30 pm
Lunch 12:30 - 1:30 pm
Class 1:30 to 4 pm

I don't know why I didn't think of asking earlier, but Natalie's cute Tsifty video over on the Indigo tribe inspired me to ask...

Since I was co-hosting to the Atlanta Mardi workshop, I frankly didn't get to write much down (imagine that! LOL). Does any have the choreo notes that they'd be willing to share with me? Email/Fax/Good ole mail?

I've only ever seen it on Mardi until recently, when Mango of the Vagabond Opera performed wearing one. I suspect it has a bit of interesting info to it, so if anyone knows, I'd like to hear.

Finger Cymbals for Belly Dance by Tobias Roberson

Yes, I have been working with it for the past two days. What a great instructional DVD! I would recommend it for beginners through advanced, very comprehensive. I also appreciate the different camera angles of Tobias playing zills, works well for lefties and righties :)
