when my personal highlight of this year's fest was a song called shine on
i couldn't help think of bri, and marie and of course sue naming this tribe.
it was a cover sung by Tim Carbone and Allie Kral with members of their bands in the
tulsa e. scott room in a playshop saturday (i think) ,
but here is a youtube of the original artist:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gWfOhhUJ2c

love you marie, shine on!

The New Monsoon mainstage set was really, really special to me.
There were a lot of Marie type things happening that day
and as soon as they started playing her song someone grabbed my ass
and I turned to see Molly with a Mojito in her hand. Serendipitous for sure.
(to some of you this will make a lot of sense, others know i'm crazy ;0)
http://www.archive.org/details/nm2008-07-04.flac16
One of my favorite Romps to date as well. Great set!
Great turn out for that early mainstage slot too! Go NM!

Hello friends,

Lola wanted me to pass on the news that Marie's father passed away a few weeks ago from bone cancer. Marie had made amends with her father when she visited with him over the Christmas season before she passed away.

Please send some good vibes to Marie's brother, Eddie, a truly wonderful and generous soul, just like his sister.

He has experienced a lot of loss in the past couple of years.

peace and love,
Parisa

I just saw a commercial last night for Diet Coke where a guy opens the fridge and there's a case of diet coke with a sticky note on it that says Marie. There's also a song playing that has the name Marie in it (can't remember what song, but it's an older one). I got a little giggle out of that one.

I have talked to Sue W about the beads that belonged to Marie that she still has. I would like to host a gathering of people to string them into jewelry that we give to each other and wear. I am thinking that her upcoming birthday might be a good oppurtunity to celebrate her life and create small tokens of her energy and love to keep with us. I am thinking that May 17 or 18 might be a good time and that it could be in Danville at my house (I am living with Bluewater, in case some of you didn't know!). But if that isn't central enough, I am open to another house. We could bring what we have of our own beading supplies to use as well. Have a potluck, shoot some pool. Play all her favorite music and drink diet Coke !

update

I've struggled over posting this new information in the interest of those who want to stop the anger and who would like to get some closure. But I figure that there are those who would like to know, especially those who have worked so hard to bring some justice to this situation.

Lola has decided to stop her quest for a case to be lodged against the Santa Cruz Police Department. She has contacted and gotten replies from 3 large CA law firms and 1 in WA. They all reviewed the original Police Report, the rebuttal by 4 of Marie's friends who were in Santa Cruz that night and the official Autopsy Report. All of the law firms said no to going forward with a case. Their conclusion is: The police officer did not violate the range of discretion and judgment that is granted to a police officer.

A police officer has a wide range of what the law calls "discretion" which really means judgment to be exercised in a circumstance.

A police officer is not required to order the fastest possible response to a situation such as Marie's. A police officer is also not required to perform CPR.

The autopsy report also showed she had bronchopneumonia present in both the right and left upper and lower lobes of her lungs.

I know this not seem fair or just, but that is the law.

From Lola:

Things I Must Be Thankful For:

Having Marie with us for almost 41 years - Not having her pass out alone in her apartment that terrible weekend - Not having her pass out driving alone in her car and hurting or killing someone thru no fault of her own - Having some friends present that night at
the concert and the number of friends who were able to get to the hospital.

I also realize how much pride Marie had in her mind, her ability to learn new things, ability to walk, dance and hike. She would not have wanted for herself or for her friends and family to endure the next 40 years of her life in a nursing home with her mental and physical abilities gone.

Marie had the fun of knowing and enjoying Echo for 11 years and Rain for 8 years.

I treasure the continued support her friends have given me this past 22 months and look forward to a continued friendship in the future.

-- Lola

Much love to you Lola. Good for you for trying and seeing it to the end.
Rest in peace, Marie. I think about you and miss you everyday.

Love to you all,

anger and injustice

I had a dream about Marie last night and woke up, first missing her and then feeling very, very angry. Not anger at her or anyone else, but anger at myself for not having done all that I could've done to fully bring to light the injustice and corruption behind how the SC police, hospital, and any other officials handled and reacted to her case.

Lola still has yet to get any kind report. She is given one false promise after another. Lawyers won't touch the case. This has not helped her in getting any kind of closure.

The police reports are full of blatant lies and turns the attention away from their own incompetency.

Maybe Marie would have left us, despite the incompetence of how the police reacted. But then again, maybe she would still be here. We will never know.

I applaud the few people among this community who took some kind of action to address what went down. As for me, I want to expose this incredible injustice -- even if nothing comes of it. We spend so much time complaining about how badly things are handled, yet we never seem to do anything about it (I am speaking for myself here, not anyone else). Here is our chance to do something -- even if you weren't there at the time of the incident, don't live in SC, etc.

So I am asking Marie's friends for suggestions on what I can do.

Marie so rarely asked for anything from any of us. I felt like in my dream, she was, for the first time, asking this of me. Even if she wasn't, I think she would've been glad that we were trying to do something.

Thank you for reading. Love to you all. I miss you, Marie, with all my heart.

has anyone seen one of Marie's cars?

Lola asked me to drive by Marie's old apartment to see if her oldest car was there...not her most recent one...another one she had awhile ago. It wasn't there and I'm just wondering if anyone knows it's whereabouts.

It's a bright blue 1990 Chev, Plate #2QMV617. She had painted decorations on it -- all Phish songs if I remember correctly. And a lot of stickers. It wouldn't be a hard car to miss.

Lola doesn't care about the car...she just doesn't want to get a storage bill from the City of Mountain View in Years to come.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Hate to keep harping on this topic but I thought this was worth posting....

>> I think the most helpful thing for Marie's friends who want to help at this point in time would be letters to the Coroner's Office in Santa Cruz asking them to complete the autopsy report. It will be 19 months this coming week and that is out of the ball park in every case that I have researched. It seems the Autopsy Report is something that must be completed and digested before any Attorney will consider any kind of a law suit. -- Lola

While I think it's perfectly fitting that I lost Marie's pin on a tour bus last summer, I was really wishing I had one these past few months. If anyone has an extra one to hand out, please shoot me an email....I would be ever grateful. Thank you....

Love you Marie!

I still have a few band T-shirts of Marie's that I'll be bringing up with me if anyone would like to go through them and take one. I'll also be leaving one of her shirts at the altar. I'm sure she will be there with us in Yosemite.
Some people were asking for this show, so I hounded Sandy until he gave to me. Not really :) I asked nicely and he sent it right out. So it is up on LMA now. If you don't know how to download shows, you can stream the music from this site.

I took the tributes to Marie and Missy off my tribe profile today. It feels weird to take them down.

On the other hand, I've had them there for over a year.

And as we remember the beloved dead with fondness, the living dance the dance of life.

"I leave the contest now to promises I never kept
To foggy dreams that faded fast right after every sleep I slept
So here's my will at last
Here's the stuff I've left to leave
To you
Or anyone who
May, a day or so from now, discover
What's already too well known
The maker of it all
Has tricks up every sleeve
Beyond the reach
Of any magic I can work
Or even teach
What will the willful say
Reading what I've writ?
Don't ask me. I wouldn't know.
I'll never hear a word of it."

FYI....

>> Child Name: Puja Nayak
Child Number: 283-003491
Birth Date: 11/27/96
Sponsor Number: 422983

Your sponsored child will be celebrating a birthday shortly. If you'd
like to send a birthday card, which I'm sure would be treasured, now is
the time to send it. Including your sponsor number and your sponsored
child's number on the card will help us expedite getting it to your
sponsored child in time for his or her special day.

If you would like some small gift ideas, please click on the following
link to visit our website: http://www.planusa.org/members/sendagift.php
or, select items from our Gift Catalogue at:
http://www.planusa.org/members/gift_items.php If you prefer, you can
email us at donorrelations@planusa.org for ideas or call us toll-free at
1-800-556-7918 between 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

If you decide to send a special gift to your child, please refrain from
wrapping it, limit your gift-giving to twice per year, and label each item
individually in case they become separated in transit. Also, due to
postal regulations, organic materials such as candy, food, or seeds cannot
be sent.

In the United States, many children receive gifts of cash for their
birthdays. In the countries where Plan works, gifts of cash can cause
jealousy towards sponsored children and families. Therefore, we'll be
pleased to apply gifts of cash given in honor of sponsored children's
birthdays to community projects.

Thank you for remembering your sponsored child's special day.

With our warmest wishes,

Monsoon rocks county fair audience
Crowd hears samples from band's new album
By Jim Harrington, STAFF WRITER
Article Last Updated: 06/26/2007 02:43:27 AM PDT

There's always a hidden gem or two to be found in the Alameda County
Fair's annual concert series.
Stashed amid the regular assortment of former chart-toppers, nostalgia
peddlers, retro-rockers and kiddie acts, there might be a new band
worth knowing, a local blues legend on the comeback trail or an
up-and-coming talent destined to play much larger venues.

On Monday night at the fairgrounds in Pleasanton, one such gem was
unveiled for fairgoers — New Monsoon.

The Bay Area-based rock quintet, which most often is lumped into the
tie-dyed jam-band category, is a big deal on the national concert
scene. It's played such major events as Austin City Limits and
Bonnaroo, the latter of which is known to drawn upwards of 100,000
fans.

New Monsoon also has headlined the legendary Fillmoreand will
celebrate the release of its latest disc, "V," with a two-night stand
at San Francisco's Independent Aug. 17-18.

Popularity in the regular concert world doesn't necessarily translate
to the fair circuit. For its 6 p.m. set, New Monsoon drew one of the
smallest crowds I've seen at the fairground's lovely, shaded
amphitheater. Even the band's core group of fans — jam-band kids —
didn't represent. I only saw one Phish T-shirt among the small crowd.

Those who did make it were treated to an enjoyably diverse hour-long
set of music that drew strongly from "V."

Running through different musical genres, styles and sounds, New
Monsoon kicked off its set with a blistering instrumental titled "Song
for Marie." I don't know who Marie is, but the band must really like
her, since it named such a good song in her honor. The track was New
Monsoon at its most Grateful Dead-like — in particular, Jeff Miller's
electric guitar work recalled Jerry Garcia's.
From there, the band kicked up the bass and latched onto some deep
funk with the new album's "Green House," which delighted the
noodle-limbed dancers in attendance.

Bo Carper handled the vocals on that fun track, then turned over the
microphone to his cohort Miller for a shiny spin through "On the Sun."
Miller also impressed with his guitar work in "Sun," trading in the
Garcia-style licks for some '80s-era rock cuts.

Carper set down his acoustic axe and picked up the banjo on the aptly
titled "Romp," which featured some killer piano runs by Phil "The
Pianimal" Ferlino. Mr. Pianimal showed off his substantial vocal
prowess in the next number, "Water Vein," and then help fuel the
rambling instrumental "Country Interlude."

After grounding themselves with an earthy rendition of "Alaska," the
five players ended their set in the stratosphere with a high-flying
rocket ride through the spidery "Daddy Longlegs."

So, I had a dream last night where Marie was selling a small amp and a karaoke stereo thingy. The location was in the den of the house I grew up in and super vivid. Each were $200 and present were Marie, some other interested dude and myself. Turning my attention from the electronics, I recall thinking to myself that Marie was no longer with us and as soon as I realized this I glanced over and she gave me a wink as if she were there, knew that I knew, and was enjoying this little time we got to spend together. We lingered there for a while, no longer speaking but enjoying that moment in time through dreams. I then "woke up" but only from one level of my dream and wanted to share this excitement with everyone. I did not realize I was still dreaming but I was...I think I'm awake now. I have not thought of Marie for a while and hanging with her for a little while last night ( in a dream embedded in a dream) makes she think she's at peace...having a beautiful smile and radiant light.

Every once in awhile, a friend sends me a photo they have found of Marie and sends it to me. Seeing these photos causes a twinge in my heart but they fill with me the knowledge that my friend will always be with me in my heart and memory. Much love to you, Marie.

If anyone is heading to the Catalyst tonight for Yonder Mountain String Band,
try to bring a flower from your garden or something to lay next to the Union Grove
Music parking lot. I plan to do the same and have mentioned it to a few others.
I am going to the Yonder show tonight as a friend of Marie's more so than
as a fan of the band. (even though I love the band). I expect it to be healing.
I know I will see some of you there-even if just in spirit.
Big Love,
b

Lola and those who have contributed their help deserve much praise and thanks for taking this thing to the next level.

i have been meaning to send you a CD of Railroad Earth for a long time Lola!
here are the lyrics:

Mourning Flies

what were you dreaming? . . . that made you sweat . . soaking wet . . . in a fever?
dark wings circling . . . slowly around . . slowly around . . slowly around

what grip held you? . . tossed & turned you . . tossed & turned you?
where were you going? carried away . . carried away . . & calling?

oh . . then mourning flies . . the fields awake & come alive . . darkness goes . .
the crows appear . . the scurrying squirrel . . the apple tree deer . . the sun fills
our bed . . the sun fills our bed

some cloud’s caught us . . trouble all around . . trouble comin’ down
six wings circling . . slowly around . . slowly comin’ down . . upon me

oh . . then mourning flies . . the fields awake & come alive . . darkness goes . .
the crows appear . . the scurrying squirrel. . the apple tree deer . . the sun fills our bed
. . the cats walk our head

they were on my chest . . it was a funny feeling . .
they had a map of my heart . . pulled pieces & parts & flew away . .
the birds were on my breast . . it was a funny feeling . .
they had a map of my soul . . dug for the coal & pulled it out . .

will you ever know?. . i’ll be right there with you . .
i have a map of your heart . . the pieces & parts
to make it whole again

oh . . ‘til mourning flies . . the fields awake & come alive . . darkness goes . .
crows appear . . the scurrying squirrel . . the apple tree deer . . carry me through
. . i’ll carry you

where have you been?
tell me where have you been?
where have you been?
tell me where have you been?

Now Im thinking of the time we went to Kaboom together for Keller Williams and Nickel Creek and Stevie Winwood.
Hoey busted out his little duckies from the Triton Hotel.
I left Margot with a kidney in her cooler.
We sipped cocktails from juice bottles.
We Smiled
We danced
We did a lot of walking around the city.

Another fond memory of our friend, Marie

I was really bummed not have been able to go to the Yankee last night to celebrate Marie's birthday. But I am hoping that it is more than just coincidence that Phish Phry just happens to coincide with her birthday weekend. I am looking forward to celebrating her life while being surrounded by the music that she loved so much and whose shows I first bonded with her at. Details for anyone who might be interested...

how is everyone doing today?

i am trying to think of today as a celebration
of marie coming into this world,
but it is still a really hard day.
i want to celebrate her day with her.

last year she was so excited for the NM 12GS
run and obviously wasn't there.
she was proabably the first one to buy her 3 day pass.

it was so fresh last year that maybe i was numb?
or maybe it seemed easier because of the beautiful
flowers and candles set up for her,
and the fact that so many of us were together.

i miss dancing near her,
her smile and laugh.
everything about her.

how is everyone else doing?

cinco de monsoon w/ marie

last weekend marked 1 year for me of the 1st time i got on a plane to see NM. marie inspired me to go if i needed to go, even if i was alone. it was a little over a week after she passed on and the show last cinco de mayo was in her home town of seattle. her mom, brother and sister in law, and some seattle friends were there. i got to really hang with struby for the first time and met some of my closest friends that night.

i am forever thankful for her friendship and encouragement in life and even after. i miss her so much!!!!! and still get a glimpse of her out of the corner of my eye at shows. of course when i look she isn't there.

we took a laminate of her to texas this past weekend for cinco de monsoon. two amazing things happened.

michelle, a texas triber told me a story of meeting marie at wakarusa 2 years ago now. i wish she'd post here and share it with you. marie made a strong impression on her and i don't believe she realized who marie was or that she had passed on until i explained the laminate to her.

also, on sunday night after the show at the jellyphish lounge in houston, i was with in the main house with ron johnson and asked him to sign the birthday book. i sat down on the floor and opened the book. it opened directly to marie's birthday, may 10th. i looked down to see her signature, memories flooded my mind. remembering when she signed it, where we were. . . much more happened over the weekend that i can't put into words, but i know she was there, and with each of us when we really need her, or just least expect it. . .

i can't make it to SF on Thursday, but will celebrate her birth and light a candle in her honor. i know i will continue trying to live more like marie. thanks sister you are loved!

eye height on the wall in front of the stage right on the rail just under the menu.

If our friend Marie was still here, she would carpool over to Shady Grove and dance like no bodys watching. She would hug half the crowd and flash her smile at all.
She would wear somethng sparkly and she would shine.
She would not mind that I am running late although I planned to arrive early.
She would not tell me to stop smoking even though I should.
She would not miss a beat from one of her favorite bands.

I love you Marie, wherever you may be.
And the hard part is knowing you probably loved me more than I do myself.

What a giver.
Happy Valentines Day.

New Monsoon opened their first headlining gig at the Fillmore this past Saturday with Song For Marie....I was so delighted. It set the mood so well in that room.

What a beautiful song...I love hearing it and delighting myself with memories of Marie's smile.

I was trying to sleep in as late as I could this morning, resting up for tonight @ The Fillmore. Well, NM's "Song For Marie" just would not stop playing in my mind. I even woke Jeff up, and sang the melody to him to make sure it was the song I thought it was. (Yes, I too sometimes get NM's instrumental songs confused). Sure enough, it was Song for Marie that woke me up....in such a happy way! She's here today for sure, and I think even Marie is so excited for the show tonight that she just couldn't help but wake Jeff & I up with her beautiful spirit. I know she will be there on the dance floor with all of us tonight...here's to beautiful Marie and NM's first headliner @ The Fillmore....see ya'll there!

I am in the process of moving and packing and I have a box labled, "Marie's gifts". That box is so full -- I need to start another box! Gifts that she brought me from South America, from Nepal, Thailand, etc., birthday and xmas gifts and not to mention all the colorful, creative, thoughtful and imaginative cards. I am happy to be taking these tokens of true friendship to my new place but it is so bittersweet.

I miss you, Marie!

Marie on Tape

Over the weekend I was listening to a tape of Jambay at the Wow Hall in 1995 when suddenly I heard Marie from the audience humorously taunting Shelly Doty about the band's acoustic alias "The Lazy Porch Dogs." I began to think to myself, how many such tapes must be out there with Marie's funny happy voice on it?

Another such tape I know of is Phish in Fukuoka, Japan in 2000. In the depths of a second set space jam the silence from a completely tranced out audience is broken by a long screaming, "Woooooooooooooooooo!" That was Marie. You can't hear it on the official band release CD, but if you get an audience tape it is there.

On a deeper level, these tapes represent an audio window into a reality of the past, thus they are partially real in the present moment. As the music lives on, so does Marie.

Happy New Year!

Your card finally arrived to me (we moved so my address has changed and it took awhile to get to me) My angel is beautiful. Right now shes sitting on my wall, but since I just got a new car over the weekend, she'll be hanging with me as I drive around. I think Marie wouldn't have wanted to sit stagnant anywhere, so the car is a fitting place - and besides, the way I drive, a guardian angel in my car isn't a bad idea :-)
The copy of the poem is now on my fridge - I think of Marie everytime I go get a diet coke :-) Thank you so much. It was the first card I got, and definitely the one that will mean the most to me during this holiday season.

I found a bunch of photos from a group outting at the boardwalk last year (which I posted in the photo album).

I still remember Marie's giggles on the roller coaster. That was fun. :-)

I love that our community of friends gets together to celebrate often. I appreciate every last one of you. Thank you for being in my life.

Christmas Greetings from Marie

A few days ago, we received our first Christmas card in the mail. It was from Marie's family (Thanks Lola, Eddie, Kamie, Rain & Echo!). It included the poem that Parisa posted about Heaven's dance floor. Both Mikey and I teared up when we read it. Very touching.

Then today I was preparing to decorate our Christmas tree and pulled up all the boxes from the basement of Christmas stuff. In my hunt for the star for the top of our tree, I noticed a lone christmas card in a box of other decorations. It is a beautiful card with blue sparkles and trees on it. I had a feeling it was from Marie. Sure enough..it says "Mikey & Laurel, Have a great Christmas guys, see you again on the 30th".

Mikey and I have been contemplating whether go to String Cheese on the 30th and no doubt we would have seen Marie there. It was very odd though, why this card wasn't in a box of other cards. It was all by itself and the first one I read--as if Marie were popping in to say hello to us. I think this is our Christmas greeting from Marie this year.

I sure do wish we were seeing her again on the 30th. I have a feeling, we'll feel her there though.

Thanks for the wishes Marie!

This came in a Xmas card that wonderful, thoughtful Lola sent to me. In case anyone hasn't received it, I thought I would post it here:

Somewhere in the South Bay, a litte car waits
Diet Coke bottles in the back seat

Ah, but she's gone, and the band starts to play
She's already up on her feet

How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?
Better make room for one more

You know damn well that Marie's gonna be the first on Heaven's dance floor

-- Doug Budzak, April 26, 2006

Happy holidays to you Lola! You are in our thoughts always....

I love you, Marie.

Instead of coming home to the usual bills and junkmail, I got a really, really nice letter from Puja's uncle (Marie's sponsored child in India) thanking us for all the gifts that were sent to Puja. The list of gifts were written on a seperate form in an alphabet I didn't recognize so I'm not sure which gifts he was referring to.

And the letter made my day -- it was like a little piece of Marie coming to say hello to me -- so I thank you too.

Marie's medical records (email from Lola)

Good Morning:

I hope you are both doing well. Senator Patty Murphy's staff person
suggested I request a copy of Marie's medical records from the Dominican
Hospital in Santa Cruz for the time frame she was brought into their
hospital in April. I did this in writing and they were very responsive. I
received the complete file last Friday in the mail. It was 3 and a half
inches thick so I was pleased to see how much they tried to do with Marie as
well as the Ambulance personnel with very little to work with.

After the initial tests were run on April 22 they identified the Primary
Diagnosis as Primary Cardiomyopathies, which means an enlarged heart. As
Secondary Diagnosis was items such as Cardiac Arrest (which we all knew).
The items that really stood out was Diabetes Insipidus and related items
that tie in with diabetes. That would explain her heavy drinking of diet
coke and water and going to the bathroom a lot. The liquid was not doing
what it should have been doing in her body.

It looked like she was in a body shut down when she fell. I feel bad the
diabetes could not have been detected some years ago, but things are the way
they are I know.

Still no Police report or Autopsy and without the lab tests I expect the
Autopsy to come back inconclusive.

Anyway, if any of her friends want to give the Santa Cruz Police HELL for the treatment /or lack of treatment by the responding Police Officer feel free to do so. I don't have his name
without the Police report but they would have that record. Also, if you want to lodge a complaint for no Police report or Autopsy after 5 months time that could be included in letters or e-mails.

The SC Police Department has gone beyond what I consider legal and ethical protocol.

Lola just called me -- she had just received a copy of the police report from the SC police department. According to the report, my name was mentioned quite a few times. The report said that I came forth on my own initiative and volunteered information on Marie's lifestyle choices and habits. NOT TRUE!

For the record, the homocide detective pulled me into an interrogation room literally minutes after Marie had passed away. He assured me that my name would be kept anonymous and that his questioning was in no way an attempt to denigrate Marie's character. He assured me that his only purpose in questioning me was to rule out the possibility of any foul play and that anything else that I told him would be kept out of the police report. He then proceeded to grill me unrelentlessly about what I knew about Marie's partying habits. I tried to be as vague as possible but he had a way of narrowing the questions down and wearing me down to the point that I had no choice to answer his questions. To be honest, I was so overcome with grief and self-blame that I barely remember what I even told him.

Lola had just received the police report, which outlines in brutal detail what I told this detective. Much of it was extensive exaggeration and a complete stretching of the truth. I can only imagine the shock and grief that Lola must have felt when she read that report. She had no idea why I could come forth and volunteer the information that was falsely written up in that report. I had to reassure her repeatedly on the phone that I did not volunteer that information on my initiative. There is absolutely no reason why I would do that.

I repeat, once again, that I in no way volunteered that information. I was literally pulled into that interrogation room and for lack of a better word, relentlessly interrogated. Literally within the same hour that Marie passed away. And the promises and assurances that were made to me by that detective turned out to be complete lies...my name is all over that report and the information is falsely presented. I was assured that that would not be the case.

In retrospect, I knew it was my right not to talk to that detective without a lawyer present. But I was not thinking clearly at the time.

I am distressed beyond words and filled with self-blame. I feel horrible that Lola had to read those things in that report. I can only imagine the shock that she must be feeling as a mother. I wish I could've taken what I said to that detective all back. He was a homocide detective after all -- I truly believed his only purpose in questioning me was to rule out any foul play. He lied to my face about keeping my name anonymous and keeping any irrelevant information out of that report.

Lola, words cannot express how truly sorry I am.

Taos Hum Halloween Show

Some of you here might remember that there was another memorial for Marie at the "reunion" Taos Hum show, the same night as the memorial for her down at the Happy Brigade ranch. That was the first time that Taos Hum had played, as themselves, in a very long time.

They have always held to their Halloween tradition, though, of playing that night, and spoofing another band. They will be doing so again this year, is it Tues night? (whatever night is actual Halloween night!!), at the Red Devil Lounge, in SF. Great name, 'eh?! :-)

The first time I saw this band, was actually just after the first time I met Marie. Our mutual friend Pamela was telling me about this band, the night I met Marie, who was verifying what Pamela was saying. Pamela invited me to this party/show at a place called Druid's Hall, in Nicasio (Marin County). Marie already had other plans for Halloween night, but she seriously encouraged me to go..... (I'd later see her at many a Taos Hum show, usually up in Marin County, despite where she lived!!!!!)

Anyway, I get to this place out in the STYX!!!! (I could barely even find it, the fog had grown so thick, and it was a full moon, to boot!!!). And this "opening band" comes out, Spinal Tap!!!!! My/our (Marie's and my) friend's Pamela and Doug who were there, are busting up laughing!!!!! Well, me too, but there's a part of the joke I'm missing - how does this relate to the actual band?? (they were **amazing!!!**)

Anyway, they *nailed* the whole Spinal Tap thing, then proceeded to do 2 sets as themselves. I immediately fell in love with this band, and they've been my favorite "local band" ever since!!

They're re-doing the "Spinal Tap" Experience this Halloween, at the Red Devil Lounge, as I mentioned above!!! I think, mainly because none of the recordings worked from the previous time!!! ;-)

So anyway, if any of you are still looking for just the thing to do that night, and would like to do a "Marie-thing" - here's a suggestion for ya!! The night I found out about this show, my last and first time, is the night I met her..... :-) :-) :-)

parisa received this email from lola that she'd like to pass on.

"I spoke with the staff person from Senator Patty Murray's office last
Friday
and she was going to speak to Dr. Mason who works for the Coroner's
office
in Santa Cruz. She said she was going to start playing "Hard Ball"
with
them. I just spoke with someone at the Coroner's office and he said
Dr.
Mason was going to go a different route doing microscopic findings due
to
FedEx losing some samples. Anyway, he promised that Dr. Mason would
have
the Autopsy completed by October 31st, 2006. (If we can believe it).
I am
glad I got a U.S. Senator's office involved."

That mysterious profile with no picture except a grayed out female form has popped up twice in the last 2 days on the list of 10 profiles on my homepage. I clicked on the profile just to see what was on it. I had a little chuckle when I saw she was a member of a tribe called Diet Cokeheads. I remember I was always asking her when she was going to put up a picture of herself on the profile. She probably still wouldn't have had a pic up because she just wanted to be like that :-) Now we've all done the job and posted numerous pics of her on tribe.

So, Marie, whether you wanted it or not you got your pic up on tribe ;-p

The last time I was at the Warfield
I was hanging with Marie on the railing
and met Parisa for the first time. . .

I just went on Friday for New Monsoon,
who was opening for the moe.

They played Song for Marie,
and it was beautiful.
I was thinking of her and
was so happy that they played it.
I was able to boogie down for her.
What a beautiful song,
for a beautiful woman.
She is missed.

I had the seeing of Marie
out of the corner of my eye happening as well.
Of course when I looked it was always someone else,
but it sure makes me think of her.

There is still nothing happening with Marie's autopsy report.

Apparently, as soon as the 8th month passes since the time of death, according to CA law, the county is off the hook.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how we can help Lola and help ourselves get the answers that some of us need for some closure?

the memorial for marie was delayed at BM. The walk, then wake was planned for Wednesday afternoon, but a fierce dust storm, which lasted almost 2 hours, ripped across the playa shutting things down.

Billy, D-mo, Gruver...and everyone else who took the memorial over to the temple on Sunday afternoon...I thank you very much for doing so. I was metally prepared for it all on Wednesday, but not on Sunday. It was truly an emotional temple burn.

Thanks for posting the pics in the album of the memorial at the temple and I'm really glad the temple guards let you put it in after they closed. I think I could almost smell the PVC burning from marie's phone ;-)

Update on HOTD Temple Gathering

After we all assemble on Wednesday, we will be coming back to HOTD to send Marie off in a way all know she would love: A good proper Irish Wake, full of drinking and merriment to celebrate her life, not to sit around being sad and mourning her.

I will be trying to print out some photos of Marie that we can all write our special notes to her on to take to the Temple. While I didn't know her quite as well or as long as some of you, she truly touched my heart and she will truly be missed

temple gathering update

Because the 4:30 'hood where Hair of the Dog will be camped is hosting a block party on Thursday night (y'all come on down, y'hear?), the temple visit to honor Marie will instead be on Wednesday, 8/30, at sunset. We'll still meet first for a toast at HOTD so you can add whatever burnables/messages/photos you desire to the altar we're building, then head to the temple. Hope to see/meet a lot of you on the playa.

Help with memorial at High Sierra?

Hi folks,

As some of you know, I organize the decorations for the High Sierra Music Festival.

This year, the festival would like to create a memorial shrine area for a few of our dear friends and community members who left us since the list High Sierra.

Most specifically Missy Baron and Marie Davidson.

So, I'm recruiting a couple of volunteers who'd be able & willing to take on this project. This is something we'd like people who knew and loved either/both women to be involved with because it is meaningful for them, but depending upon the amount of time/effort involved there may also be a thank you gift offered for your help (late night ticket or something).

Please email me at lisab32@earthlink.net if you are interested in helping.

If you can't help in advance, but do want to participate, just stop by the memorial to make some kind of contribution (drawing, poem, momento, etc.) and/or send your love to our friends! I'm not exactly sure where the shrine will live, but more than likely it'll be near The Lawn since that is a main public gathering area.

Many thanks & Much Love,
Lisa Brown

Shall we gather at the temple?

Some of us who are going to Burning Man are planning a temple visit to honor Marie. I'm thinking Thursday evening, sundown-ish. Bring any small item that reminds you of Marie that you don't mind giving to the fire.

We can arrange a meet-up at one of our camps beforehand and proceed to the temple as a group if that makes sense to y'all. Let me know.

did anyone else notice the woman dancing up in front
who had very similar hair as marie and looked like her from behind?

i hadn't ever seen her before, and it felt like marie was
up there on the rail at times.

they played a beautiful version of Song for Marie in the 2nd set.
New Monsoon
7/28/06
Sweetwater Inn
Mill Valley, CA

acoustic

set 1
Border Ghost
Painted Moon
Goin' To California (FTP)
Tombo
Broken Picture Window
Vickassippi
Inner City Blues
Traveling Gypsies

set 2
She Is Everywhere (just Bo, Jeff, + Phil)
3 Tenors
Greenhouse >
Song For Marie
Romp
System Decay
Liquid Blue
Mountain Air

i was headed for the front door as it can be too much for me.
then something stopped me and i was able to boogie down
right on the door mat.
it felt good.

from seattle to wind jam

i can't remember what day it was when i saw
wind jam posted on new monsoon's site w/
little detail, just a phone # for a guy named matt.
i called to get more information.
we traded a couple of messages and
had a little chat.

the week after marie died
i jumped on a plane to seattle to see new monsoon,
in marie's hometown,
where i was hoping to see her family.
this was something i never had done,
buy a plane ticket solo,
not knowing anyone directly in the town i was heading to,
but knew of marie's friend kate.
something i did because marie would have in a heart beat.
something i am so thankful i did.

after deciding to go to portland as well,
i started to look for a ride.
adam gave me a friends # who was making the drive.
not until we were sitting out back at the tractor tavern
did i realize that it was the matt i had called a week before,
and that he was the creator of wind jam.

i then realized that i'd be going to wind jam,
no matter how broke,
no matter what excuses,
i needed to be there.

he got me to portland where marie's
good friend kate picked me up with bill and shannon
who i had only met the night before.
they took me in, fed me, wouldn't dare let me stay at a hotel,
and woke up in sunday to get me to the airport at 7am.
unbelievable family that i needed so bad
so recently after marie's passing.

when i returned to their home last thursday night,
i immediately felt the comfort of home,
but a tinge of the fresh grief i had the last time i was there,
and that same welcoming, comforting familiar feeling.
that night i had a really vivid dream.
marie was in it, but i still can't quite explain it.
she was telling me that she was in good hands,
and that she was still here for me,
she was very calm and happy, angelic.

i have been trying to take in so much from the past few months,
trying to understand,
but especially what i learned and felt in hood river.

on sunday they played song for marie.
i fought the pain inside and tried to listen,
but i found myself struggling.
marie is why i was there,
yet where was she?

after the song i looked over and jim was in the same state as myself.
we hugged and then i went behind the stage.
i found 2 chairs and sat down in the meadow.
(great sound back there too by the way)
i had a really good cry that had been building up for weeks.
why can't i just get a hug from marie?
or some advice,
just one more story and giggle?
it just isn't fair.

then i realized that i didn't feel alone at all.
the empty chair beside me seemed to represent the space that i
want to hold onto for marie.
the symbolic empty chair made a lot of sense to me at that moment.

dani once told me as i was digging for a meaning to a song
that it could represent whatever i chose for it to in my heart.
i chose to hear white sky rain that weekend,
as advice from marie through the music.
it was very powerful to embrace.

so much more, but
the story is long enough already
and i must get some sleep!

thank you marie
for being there for me,
and for giving me the courage to live
out my dreams.

i miss you and love you more than i can explain.

So I was at the Yankee tonight.
Your usually crew of Norcal was in the house.
Bri was up front dancing and I looked around. Something was missing.
It suddenly dawned on me that this was perhaps the first time I had ever been to the Yankee and Marie wasn't there.

I had the fortunate chance of meeting Phil Lesh last week in Vermont. I thanked him for saying what he said about her at the 12 Galaxies after her memorial in Santa Cruz and showed him my Marie pin. He was incredibly gracious and told me that he had heard so many incredible things about her that night.

As luck would have it, I lost my Marie pin on the tour bus shared by Trey A. and Mike G.later on during the show. I was bummed at first but now I think it's only fitting that she was left on that bus to continue the tour.

marie's spirit is held in each of us

i made some observations through myself and through all of you,
marie's family and friends that i'd like to share.
marie's spirit is held in each of us.
she continues to live thorugh us.

specifically at high sierra,
one of marie's friend's pissy susan needed someone to lean on.
i kept thinking that if marie were there she wouldn't leave pissy's side.
she'd be there in thick and thin, patient and steadfast, so calm and loving.
not to mention some funny remarks to make you laugh
when you just don't think you can.
you could always depend on marie to be there for you no matter what.

i saw sulana pick up on this and fill some very big shoes that marie has left behind.
i am not saying that sulana would not have been there on her own,
but marie surely would have been too, holding up Pissy's other side.
the friendship and love that i saw sulana demonstrate was similiar
to what i saw parisa do through marie's passing.

marie introduced me to some amazing people
and i am so thankful to her for that.
thank you for continuing to show me that people
like marie do exist.
that there are people that you can count on
no matter what.
unconditional love.

i have noticed that i have taken on marie's willingness
to do what i want even if it means going alone.
when i drove to reno by myself a couple of weeks ago,
i really didn't feel alone.
i would look over and remember having marie in my car
and the conversations we had.

man i miss her!!!!!

thank you so much sister!!!!
i miss you more than i can say,
and i love you.
you are always in my heart.

Thanks to Sueshi for the Marie Button. I was so pleased to be approached by so many people at High Sierra asking "Who is that beautiful redhead" or "Who's that?". This gave me an opportunity to tell strangers (new friends) about Marie. The buttons are such a good idea.

Dear Prudence

One of the songs that keeps Marie's spirit present with me is Dear Prudence.
Knowing I was on Pacific Ave with her while one of my favorite bands was performing the song inside the Catalyst really shocked me. Parisa and I even sang it to her at the hospital.

I've noticed that Sirius Radio's CH 17 (Jam On) has been playing a Jerry Garcia version of this Beatles classic a bit lately. I cannot help but think of her.

Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play?
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day
The sun is up, the sky is blue
It's beautiful and so are you
Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play?

When I hear this verse I think of my begging and pleading for her to 'come to'
Funny how the music in the club had an unseen connection to my emotions.
Blue was her favorite color. (either that or disco ball sparkle :)

Dear Prudence, open up your eyes
Dear Prudence, see the sunny skies
The wind is low, the birds will sing
That you are part of everything
Dear Prudence, won't you open up your eyes?

This gentle verse brings me right to Dominican Hospital. holding her hand and trying to
see some sign of life in her almost completely closed eyes. Marie had great laugh lines around her eyes. I don't think I ever saw her sad.

Look around round
Look around round round
Look around

Dear Prudence, let me see you smile
Dear Prudence, like a little child
The clouds will be a daisy chain
So let me see you smile again
Dear Prudence, won't you let me see you smile?

.. and she does. Its not hard to visualize that smile. Especially when I need it.

Now to be hoakey and refer to good ole www.m-w.com:

Main Entry: pru·dence
Pronunciation: 'prü-d&n(t)s
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French, from Latin prudentia, alteration of providentia -- more at PROVIDENCE
1 : the ability to govern and discipline oneself by the use of reason
2 : sagacity or shrewdness in the management of affairs
3 : skill and good judgment in the use of resources
4 : caution or circumspection as to danger or risk

This is so Marie!
And I thank Yonder Mountain String Band for these memories and this moment
and you for reading my emotions.

Love you,
b

Many of you know our friend Marie. She was a huge supporter of our scene
and just a warm, kindhearted gal.

She was a big Garaj Mahal fan and had been earning her way to attend the
High Sierra Music Festival on the streetteam. She just loved supporting
things she believed in.

BrownEyed Woman and High Sierra would like the ticket she earned to attend
the festival to go so something Marie believed in. So we are holding a
raffle for one 4-day pass to this years festival. All of the proceeds will
go to the child she supported in India, Puja Nayak

Raffle tickets will be sold at the merch table at both Bay Area shows:
June 8 Red Devil Lounge, San Francisco
June 9 Kuumbwa Jazz Center, Santa Cruz

$2 each or 3 for $5.

We love and miss you Marie!

i felt marie a lot this weekend.
thanks for letting me borrow your button tree,
it was nice to wear marie on my shirt.
it was especailly nice to be with so many of her friends.
she introduced me to so many of you and
i am very thankful to her for that.
when new monsoon played song for marie
it brought tears to my eyes,
and a wave of emotions.
it was hard to dance,
but then i thought of marie dancing next to me
and was able to boogie.
i was remembering that she had planned on
going to Wakarusa this past weekend instead of Harmony,
but now i believe she was at both.
it will be really nice to have a shrine for her at HSMF,
and i love parisa's idea for the diet coke/ mentos gig.

I was driving to work this morning when I remembered I had a dream with Marie in it last night. I don't remember much about it other than seeing her coming down an escalator. I remember thinking in the dream "Oh it's probably someone that just looks like her" but then she walked up to me and was standing in front of me. I think we went to hug but the dream seemed to end right then.

It made me happy knowing she came for a visit :-)

Donation information for Marie's child

Friends,
I was able to track down Marie’s sponsored child in India, and whom Marie had visited during her travels. Marie had continued sponsoring this child right up until last month. I have taken over the sponsorship on a monthly basis. Some of you have requested to take over in the future – please contact me if you wish to do so.

The child’s name is Puja Nayak. She is nine years old and lives in Chilika, India. The Childreach Organization will contact her family and give them the sad news. I will be receiving a packet of information on Puja next week and will post pictures.

If you would like to make a donation to Puja’s family in Marie’s name, you can send a check made out to PlanUSA in memory of Marie Davidson to the following address:

PlanUSA
155 Play Way
Warwick, RI 02886

Marie’s sponsor number is 975386 – it is very important that you include this number in your note so that the money goes to Puja’s family. They also ask that you provide your address so that they can send you a thank you letter. Puja’s child number is 2833491.

If you would like more information, you can call 1-800-556-7918. Ask for Sharon at extension 1343. Their website is http://www.planusa.org/.

As always, please forward this email to anyone and everyone if you want.

Love to you all,
Parisa

Seattle Memorial

The service was beautiful...heartbreaking and healing at the same time. TomCat, Anne and Doug were all there, representing Marie's Bay area family. I managed to get through my speech without losing it and people said it was really nice. The other three speeches were really nice too...one from Mike (her longtime friend and ex-boyfriend from junior and highschool), Colleen (college friend) and her dad. The pastor gave a nice sermon, not too overly religious, selecting stories about strong woman characters from the bible.

I got to see the house that Marie grew up in and also saw her room...that was hard. It was great meeting and hanging out with her friends from various periods of her life and seeing soooooo many pictures of her growing up. It made me realize that her life in the Bay area was just a small snippet of her full life. Someone commented that she did more in her 40 years than most people did in 80. That brought a lot of comfort to me.

Lola seems to be holding up well, although I think like Marie, she puts on a brave face. I worry about her in the next coming months when everything has settled down. She took us out to a great dinner the night before the memorial. She mentioned that she enjoyed seeing New Monsoon, describing them as a group of "nice young men." Eddie was in good spirits...especially at the after-party. What a great guy. He said that now the memorial is over, he'll be looking into the coroner's report and possible investigation.

Here's an interesting little tidbit...according to Mike, he could never get Marie to dance! She was uncomfortable and shy about it and she refused to do it. It was ACDC that finally got her moving. No wonder she loved "ACDC Bag" whenever Phish played it.

I will post pics and my speech. I also brought back a TON of Marie's band t-shirts....everything from the Dead to Phish to New Monsoon and other bands. I'm not sure what to do with them. Any ideas? They range in all sizes.

Marie's eulogy by her brother

This was written by Eddie and the pastor read at it her service in Seattle. Eddie asked that it be shared....

Marie Davidson was born, May 10, 1965. The daughter of Lola and Jim Davidson, she was always a free spirit. She was not to be stopped or dissuaded to ignore anything she wanted. She was full of life and energy.

And she was definitely stubborn. Early in life she was a devout meat-eater. Every time the family went out to eat, she insisted on going to a place she could get New York Steak with ketchup. Conversely, when she grew up, she became a vegetarian, and made everyone bend to her will again. Even at family holiday dinners she would persuade her mother to order a separate vegetarian meal from a local Indian restaurant.

She was born and raised in the West Seattle neighborhood. She attended Genesee Hill Elementary, followed by Madison Middle School. After the family spent a year in Marin County, California, they moved back to Seattle where Marie attended Cleveland High School.

Following graduation in the class of 1982, she attended the University of Washington, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. During her years there, she became a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. It was there that she met some more life long friends, and bonded with many people.

After getting her degree, she worked in a few different capacities, not the least of which were various office positions at Group Health Cooperative.
During her stint at Group Health, though she enjoyed the people she worked with, Marie began to feel a little restless. After careful, and not so careful consideration, she decided to go to Law school. She enrolled in Golden Gate University in San Francisco, where she earned her Juris Doctorate in Law. While she could technically refer to herself as a doctor at this point, she never liked to use the title. She said the only time it proved useful was when encountering a pretentious man who felt it made him look more important to display a string of titles before his name.
