Friday, June 1, 2007
8pm-10pm

What's a Bazantar? Essentially combining the best of both classical Indian and Western stringed instrumentation, the Bazantar is a five-string acoustic bass, fitted with an additional twenty-nine sympathetic strings and four drone strings. The instrument possesses a melodic range of over five octaves, while its sympathetic range spans four octaves. What that means to your ears is a hauntingly beautiful and unique sound that should be experienced at least once, and brings people who have heard it back again and again.

Come be part of the experience!

Our intimate house concert series is a special treat, allowing you to get up close and personal with the artist. There is limited space available, so we request that you RSVP by emailing wjblackburn@gmail.com or calling 415-240-2052. For more information about Mark Deutsch, go to www.bazantar.com

Beejebus.

I met the day in my usual manner-Bemused, sweetly, and with Promise in my throat.
I met my friend with the usual tenderness, a hug, a smile of knowing, a smirk.
I met the door with the usual resistance, opened up and entered the chambers of delight. Kris's house, where the house concert was already underway, with Mark playing.

I met the experience with tears. How could I help it? What is a soul to do when faced with a naked love? With a yearning for a home never seen? With a raw, precise, unforgiving demand of thrown=arms=WIDE.

May today be gentle to me, as the openness spreads like sunlight over the hills at dawn. There is no stopping how *much* is in my heart.

*bows head reverently.*

Mark's unusual sitar tuning

I have been listening to Mark's sound samples online, (don't worry Mark, I'll be ordering that CD soon!), and noticed something unusual...

In the sitar tracks, my first impression was that the sitar was being accompanied by a guitar. Then I quickly realized that Mark had tuned his sitar's chickary strings much lower than the standard high C, middle C, middle G. (High Sa, middle Sa, middle Ga), so instead of the high-pitched chickary sound accenting the main melody you would typically hear from a sitar, you hear a very nice guitar-strumming sound. (Mark seems to tune his bazantar similarly as well)

Is this tuning unique to Mark's sitar compositions, or is it from a Gayakti or tradition of Indian Classical Music I am unfamilar with?

Also, are thicker gauge strings needed to get a good sound from chickary strings tuned to a lower pitch?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Bazantar!

Hello,

I found this tribe in a rather convoluted manner. I was doing a web search for other sitarists in Portland OR, which led me to the website of the band "Land of the Blind". Apparently one of their band members, Krystov, plays sitar, and studied it with Mark Deutsche. Then I googled Mark Deutsche, and found his Bazantar website, and also this tribe page.

Sadly, I found no sound samples of the Bazantar on Mark's website, but I did find a few notes played here: www.oddmusic.com/gallery/om06200.html

I would love to hear more of this extrordinary instrument.
