SHERRI WHEATLEY - TRIBAL FUSION FUNDAMENTALS:
This workshop focuses on the fundamentals of Tribal Fusion Bellydance ranging from its ATS to the evolution of this style including more experimental fusion stylizations. Some previous Tribal Fusion experience is helpful, but not required. Open to all levels.

SADIE - SAMBA BELLYDANCE FUSION:
Brazilian Samba is one of Sadie and Kaya's most requested classes and workshops. This workshop will break down some of the most popular moves and foot patterns in the Samba no Pe.., the soloist dance seen at Rio's Carnaval and in many night clubs in Brazil, as well many of th traditional Afro-Brazilian movements and add them together in exciting choreography or short combinations. Get ready to have a great time, burn some serious calories and add some spice to your dance vocabulary. Open to all levels.

FRANK FARINARO - TRULA/BELLYNESIAN:
In this workshop we focus on elements of Tribal and Cabaret Bellydance as well as the Polynesian dances of Hawaii, Tahiti and Samoa. Both of these dances hold strong similarities in movement vocabulary. As we progress, we focus on fusing the different styles together to show how they complement each other.

SOLD Paprika!

Alright, the transformation continues,

We sold Paprika to a wonderful Nepalese family we have known for quite some time.

They are keeping the studio intact and we will be holding the Elevation music classes there.

(YES, Elevation will continue. How could we not?)

We are also moving to Florida this summer.

It's been a wonderful ride, and we are bittersweet at the transitions.

Colorado and the wonderful people of the West are in our hearts and minds, and Elevation will bring us back for many years to come.

The community that sprung up around Elizabeth, Marrakech, and Paprika is a treasure to us.

Wow!

We are blown away by Elevation this year!

1st and foremost, we want to thank each and every person that had a part in Elevation:
Attendees
Teachers
Vendors
Work-Trade Volunteers
Performers
our Video and Audio crews
The crew, management, and ownership of the Buffalo Rose
the indentured servants
and anyone else that had a part in Elevation, no matter how small or how large.

There was some magic that happened. I felt it. I know that most everyone else felt it. We are so grateful for the experience and friendships, both old and new.

We did it all together, and Elizabeth and I are already planning next year's Elevation so we can do it again.

Hello everyone!

I just want to extend a HUGE thanks to everyone who came to Elevation this year. It was undoubtedly the BEST time I have ever had in my oh-so-short dancing career, & I can't wait for next year!!! It's gonna be hard to top this year. What a diverse line-up!!!

Let's start at the top...

A GINORMOUS thanks to Ocean & Elizabeth. You folks have been there since the beginning of my journey in bellydance & are still here today. You both have taken me in & have been like my bellydance parents. Words can't express how much I love you folks. You have & continue to do so much for me over the years, & I hope that I can find a way to repay even a tiny fraction of what you have given me. I still remember back in March of 2006 when I first met you when you hosted workshops with Kami Liddle & Petite Jamilla in Denver during BDSS's Raqs Carnavale tour. My my... where has the time gone.

Thanks to Austin for being right by my side working through this weekend. You're one of my best friends, favorite co-workers, & dedicated students. I can't wait to see what we accomplish this year!!!

Just around the corner from Elevation . . . live show and workhops with Rachid Halihal!

Hi Everyone!
I hope you all are well both in and outside of the music and dance world. Just
a reminder that there are some very exciting events with Rachid coming up this
month! And those that do not know Rachid... you are REALLY missing out!

THE MAIN EVENT

On April 29th (Wednesday) Rachid and his band will be playing a live event at the
Crossroads Theater in Denver at 7:30. You can visit their website at
www.denvercrossroads.com and purchase tickets online. Tickets are $18. There is
a small fee to purchase online, but it will be worth it to secure your seat!
Not only will there be time for open dancing, but there will also be bellydance
performances by Khadijah, Eva Cernik, Taka, and Sonia!.

Workshop for dancers

On April 28th (Tuesday) Rachid will be teaching a workshop focused on musicality
for dancers from 7pm-9 at Dance Fusion Studio. This workshop is designed for
experienced dancers who want to take their performance to the next level by
understanding how to correctly listen to and interpret the melodies of Arabic
music. Cost is $50

On April 27th (Monday) Rachid will be teaching an ensemble workshop at Open Tap
& Grill, 1446 S. Broadway, Denver. 6:30 PM, upstairs.

We will not be allowing people to take photos or video of the event, but we will be offering these services through some friends of ours who do this type of work professionally.

VIDEO:
Ms. Audrey Sica, Elevation VJ extraordinaire, will be providing the Videos for those who want to purchase a copy of their Friday night performance. This will not be available for sale to the public, only to those who performed, and only their own performance. Audrey offers a variety of services including 1, or 2 camera edits, with additional youtube loading as well.

Good people of Earth,

It is with great sadness, yet not a small amount of relief that Elizabeth and I announce the closing of Marrakech Imports in Evergreen, Colorado.

It has just become too much to handle in these times, and we can't continue to do it any more.

We are working ourselves way too hard, sometimes 80 hours a week, dealing with these slow economic times, employee issues, and more and more debt.

So, we are taking the next step in our journey that we hope will allow some sanity back into our lives! ;-)

The Evergreen store store will be closing at the end of March.

Go by now for deals and discounts on remaining stock.

We are also selling the displays and cases.

Paprika, our new store down in Golden, CO, will continue to stay open, for now, and we are looking forward to Elevation on April 17-19.

We want to share the feeling of thanks, gratitude, love, honor, respect, kindness, support, and help we have received from almost every person we have met through the store.

Marrakech has been a window, a door, into other people's lives that has allowed us to share art, music, dance, culture, community, and fun with thousands and thousands of good people. We treasure you all.

Black Friday Decompression...

Hey folks. Since I have been free from the world of working retail sales for almost 8 months now after ofer 2 years of servitude, I have completely forgotton about the customer & employee stress that begats from the day after Thanksgiving... more commonly known as Black Friday. Being suddenly reminded that it is that time again, I have been spontaneously inspired to extend the gift of healing, de-stressing & meditative movement... ALL AT A KILLER BLACK FRIDAY BARGAIN!!!

This Black Friday I will be offering a mini-workshop from 3:00-5:00pm. In this workshop, we will cover healing stretches for the torso & limbs, relaxing & meditative breathing techniques, & basic bellydance moves that will be layered & accented while maintaining strong posture. Women spend so much of our lives worried when we see those jiggles on our tummy when we brush our teeth, or are so careful to run up the stairs and avoid the butt clap. Well Khadijah and Sonia suggest to our fellow BELLYdancers to take that pretty, manicured middle finger with the elastic zill strap and hold it up to the idea that stomach jiggles aren't sexy!!! In their "Flabs of Steel" workshop proffessional dancers Khadijah and Sonia will show you how to engage muscles to work in "strategically placed" jiggles to your dance. Phoenix & the Sultry Emberz have brewed up a special evening for you which includes a spooktacular show, two live bands (Yallah! and Kara Nomadica), dancing, contests, mix of various styles of music for the late night dancers, and surprises.

Hello folks!!!

Frank here. Just wanted to let folks know that classes are still going on at 40 Thieves Hookah Lounge, every Friday from 5:00-7:00pm. Classes are friendly for all levels. They are a great way for the beginner dancer to get a sampler of many differnet styles & give the advanced dancer new concepts for layers, accents, fusion, & even simple tools to encorporate into their basic practice. All classes are taught from performer's perspective & how to tailor a performance to many different venues. See below for class summary.

EACH CLASS IS DIFFERENT & DESIGNED FOR DROP-INS!!! Sometimes making it to class once a week can be hard. Life happens & sometimes our plans change. With these classes, you can show up 1 week & return 3 weeks later & not feel left behind. A choreography is taught & drilled for no more than 2 weeks at a time. Each class focuses on stretching, toning, & conditioning the parts of the body that are used for each choreography. Variations are offered for each skill & body level. This includes those with limited flexibility, Scoliosis, Arthritis, Spinal Injuries, C-Section Scars, Sternum Dislocations, Fractured Ribs, Bowed Legs, Pigeon Toes, etc.

Classes are held at 40 Thieves Hookah Lounge at 1524 North Academy Boulevard Colorado Springs, CO 80909. Each class is 2 hours long & runs from 5:00pm-7:00pm (MDT). Observing a class is free of charge, drop-ins are $20, & 10 class punch cards are available for $130 & can be used towards workshops as well.

Class Description: In these classes, technical dance is taught to give the dancer a foundation within the dance, & also instinctual dance so the dancer no longer thinks about executing moves, but learns to do what comes naturally as if it were second nature.

Hammerhead Sharqi Dance Technique is a style of World Fusion Bellydance that is based in American Tribal Style (ATS) & heavily influenced by elements of Modern-Egyptian Cabaret Style, Hip-Hop, Hula, African, Indian, & Latin dances & bears subtleties of other dance & movement styles including Javanese, Japanese, Ballet, Lyrical, Modern, Jazz, Ballroom, Martial Arts, as well as Yoga, Pilates, Gymnastics, & many more. In these classes, the meditative communication channels between mind & body are opened to create a more expressive movement within the dance with a strong foundation & sharp mental focus.

New Private classes available: Private lessons are available upon request for a cost of $20 per person, per hour for a personally tailored lesson or to revue a choreography from a previous class. A new private class is available for any person who so chooses. CUSTOM CHOREOGRAPHIES!!! In these private lessons, Frank will create a choreography specifically for you!!! You may choose a song that you already own, a choreography that you have seen Frank perform, or just any song that you have in mind & Frank will whip up a choreography for you to which ever song you choose. No song is taboo & all genres are welcome (Drum Solo, Arabic Pop, Electronica, Orchestra, Opera, Death Metal, Smooth Jazz, Gangsta-Rap, Country, Mongolian Throat Singing, you name it!!! LOL).

Circus Side Show!!!

All I can say is what FUN! We had a great time Sat. Night! The Princess was fabulous as always and Satya and her partner did some feats that set the place a blaze! Flying fabric dancers and a dancing Camel! Ricky, (definitly taking a class or two from him!!) Michael *giggle* and Frank added that extra something!! All the performances were fantastic....I especially enjoyed Elizabeth's performance! The spontaneity was the piece de resistance! What a pro! Thank you so much for the events you all work so hard to bring to fruition!

Correction on the date for the "Best of the Persian Gulf" workshop

Hi all, I know a few of you got some of me and Khadijah's fliers about our workshop next month, and there was a typo on the date!! We had originally planned on May 17th, but decided to move it to May 24th - so that's the important date! The workshop will be at the same rec center that Khadijah teaches at locataed on 2800 Glenarm place. We will each teach half of the four hours (with a break in between).

I also wanted to give any of you who are interested in Persian dancing a little more information on the choreography I am teaching. The dance I am teaching is called "Baba Karam" and is based on a very old Iranian pop song, but it continues to be EXTREMELY popular today. The song is about the old Iranian "bad boys" who had there own, pretty sloppy sense of style. You typically where black dress pants, a white dress shirt not buttoned properly and only half tucked in, a red scarf around your neck and a black fedora style hat. This dance is very cute for girls because you kind of immitate the men's style of dancing and acting a little arrogant. A lot of the classical hand movements, head slides, and facial expressions are central to dancing Baba Karam, and it's also very important how you play with the scarf around your neck and your hat to be REALLY flirtatious.

I learned Persian style from several of my Iranian friends, and was asked to perform Baba Karam at this year's Norouz (Persian New Year) at CU Boulder.

We are wrapping up the final details, and getting freaking excited to see everyone again at Elevation!

This year is gonna be bigger and better than ever.

Schedule of events:
Friday
9am-5pm Full day of classes with Unmata, Zoe Jakes, Karim Nagi, Monnya Silver, and Tribe Marrakech

6:30pm: Halfa, Show, Concert, and Open Dancing at the Buffalo Rose.
Participant performances
Concert by La Notte(NYC Gothic Medieval Dance Band, with Hurdy Gurdy, Viola, Violin, Medieval Pipes, and Nevik on drums(look fo Ocean and Karim Nagi to sit in too!)
There will also be a special Middle Eastern Menu available to those who did not take advantage of the Catered Middle Eastern Feast.

Saturday
9am-5:45pm Full day of classes with Zoe Jakes, Karim Nagi, John Compton, and Urban Gypsy

7pm Gala Show with Teacher and special guest Performances
Intermission reprise by La Notte
Concert by Paper Bird, local Boulder band with a strong following based on their old timey 3 part harmonies.

Sunday
9am-5pm Full day of classes with Unmata, John Compton, Urban Gypsy, & Karim Nagi.

Both shows will also be enhanced with:
The Soca Chutney Stylings of The Island Boi DJ Ricky.

The Incomparable Audrey Sica, one of the Top VJ's in the country, mixing her special magic for your eyes' delight!

I bought tickets to Unmata 100% (9 am) and Zoe Jakes: Sultry Moves (11:15 am) workshops on Friday, April 18. I can't really afford it, so would anyone like to take them off my hands?

It's $72 for both workshops, and I can tell you Unmata will work your butt off! I haven't taken anything from Zoe before.

It seems that there was some miscommunication on our part about the Fri night hafla.

So, here is the final word:
We are allowing any one who purchases a hafla ticket up until 12:00 midninght tonight to partake in the Middle Eastern Feast at the hafla.

Hi guys...do you have a suggestion or an idea of where we can get ready between the last workshop and show on Friday? I just realized how much time I have (1 hour)....that would be driving time home and back. So wondering if you knew of a place...or an idea that I could do.

If someone has a room and would not mind someone plugging in a curling iron on the floor and bringing a mirror to do makeup --- i would buy you a beer! And would not take up much space....

Guessing I may not be the only one in the last workshop performing....
