The 2005 Yerba Buena Gardens Festival presents "Gamelan - A Hundred and One Rhythms and Movements of Bali" in a narrated family concert in Yerba Buena Gardens from 1pm to 2:30pm on Saturday, October 1, 2005.
Gamelan Sekar Jaya, the internationally acclaimed fifty-member ensemble performs the wondrous rhythms and dance of Bali. Through narrative and performance, Sekar Jaya's director Wayne Vitale gives an insider's perspective on centuries old but rapidly evolving traditions, exploring the complex interlocking rhythms and virtuosic ensemble sensibility of Balinese music, the myriad expressions and delicate motions of Balinese dance, and the dynamic interaction that unites them. The performance includes renowned guest artists-in-residence from Bali: I Made Terip, a prominent musician of his generation who has brought accolades to the North Bali music community; and I Wayan Budiarsa, dancer, choreographer, musician and teacher from the village of Butuan, who has trained both children and adults, and formed several new dance centers.
