In an attempt to regenerate awareness towards the island of Bali, ABL has recently created a web-log (commonly known as blog) – http://blog.baliwww.com
The main function of this web-log is that it can be viewed daily like an on-line journal and anyone can post opinions, questions, messages and general information for the benefit of those who have business or travel interests in Bali.
In order for us to create a concise data-base about what is happening around Bali, ABL would like to invite you to submit Articles of your travel experiences, Art and culture, Music, Dance, Press Releases, Special Events regarding your property, which will then appear under each category of the web-log.
Please feel free to view the ‘blog’ at your leisure and contact us if you have any feedback on issues of how we can work together to promote and preserve Bali as a quality holiday destination.

PARADISE LOST 'THE LOSS OF INNOCENCE

PARADISE LOST

'THE LOSS OF INNOCENCE

As we walk through Kuta looking around at the empty shops, very few tourists and empty cabs everywhere waiting for that maybe one fare they might get for the day, our thoughts go back to a time before the 'bombs' when your thrilled in the excitement of shopping for a bargain, great dining and making new friends. It was a 'paradise', a fun place to holiday.

The disaster struck with the bombing of the 'Sari' club and 'Paddy's Bar, so amny beautiful lives lost, not only visitors to the island but the local Balinese as well. Tourists were understanably cautious but ventured abck slowly to the island. Then the 2nd bomb struck, this bomb destroyed the whole economic balance of the island. There is no social welfare structure. Bali is 90% dependent on the tourist money. No tourist, no work, no money to survive. The welfare structure is totally dependent on extended families supporting aech other in their tiem of need, but now there are so many families out of work they can no longer offer support to each other.

We understand tourists not returning to Bali, but we are so happy to help out our many Bali 'family' and friends with our exporting range of fashion accessories out of Bali. We are great believers of helping our fellow man in their tiem of need. Just like they helped us survive on our 1st trip to Bali some 10 years ago.

Hey everyone, I just arrived back in New York to visit and to kick off a tour doing 20 shows around the United States.
For the last 8 months I have been living in Berlin and it has been a total trip.
It feels good to be back in the states and I am hoping to see all my New York friends together this Monday at Deep Space where I will be doing my only NY show.
It will be a special night doing an all-live global dub soundsystem with Last Poets legend Umar Bin Hassan, who also was on the last Common record as well as Trumpet playing madman Satish on horn and electronics.
And of course resident DJ, Francois K.
Please come and join me, catch up with good friends in a fun night!!

Step back, all ye wannabe rappers and check out one of
the originals who made hip hop possible. Before Africa
Bambaata was throwing parties in the Bronx, before
Prince Whipper Whip was rocking with the Fantastic 5
and before the Rock Steady Crew ever attempted their
first windmills, Umar Bin Hassan and the Last Poets
were making rhythm and poetry live on the streets of
Harlem.
Thirty years later a number of the more socially and
politically conscious emcees are planning a tribute
album to the Last Poets featuring Common, Dead
Prez, Chuck D, Keith Murray, Buckshot, Kanye West,
Erykah Badu and others.
Since 1999, Brooklyn Producer/DJ Dub Gabriel and Last
Poets’s founder Umar Bin Hassan have collaborated in
many ways.
First with Umar’s now legendary appearance on Dub
Gabriel’s Baraka Orchestra album, Then with Dub
Gabriel and Prof. Shehab releasing Umar’s album
produced by Bill Laswell. Gabriel’s Current album
“Bass Jihad” is a modern Middle Eastern Dub
masterpiece being compared by Billboard magazine to
Brian Eno as well as on the best of 2005 list from
many magazines and radio stations from around the
world.
The night will be a celebration of not only the return
meeting of these two artist, but also it will be the
first time Dub Gabriel is in New York since moving to
Berlin Germany 8 months ago.
This legendary night will feature Dub Gabriel\s
Brooklyn Massive soundsystem doing all live dubbing
and music creating. as well as Trumpet maestro Satish
on the dub trumpet and surprise guest!!
and of course your host and pilot for the evening on
the ones and twos Mr. Francois K.!!

Belly Dance in Bali

Hello! I was invited by Silvie to join this list after she heard that I will be in Bali teaching a week-long belly dance workshop in May. I am so excited to visit your beautiful country, and I hope to have the opportunity to meet many of you while I am there.

Here is a bit of information about the workshops:
******
The workshop will include classes to enhance and improve your belly dance isolations, stretches and technique, as well as classes in Tribal Fusion, West African fusion, Balinese dance and more. Saturday evening, make history and perform in the first-ever belly dance show at Bhanuswari! It's already being advertised across the island, so come share the stage with Sahira, local Balinese dancers, and belly dancers from all over.
******

I am looking for people to help me spread the word about the workshops - please contact me if you might be willing to assist! My email is sahira[at]sahira.cc. You can also get more details about the workshop on my website at www.Sahira.cc

Also - would any of you all be interested in performing in the Saturday night show? We are looking for a variety of acts - dance, music, and otherwise...so let me know!

THANKS!

VISUAL DJ: Pictureman (Insomnia Projects)

Smithmonger Bio:

Smithmonger was originally a professional trumpet player who trained at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music before turning his attention to underground dance music. He moved to London 5 years ago and has turned heads with past releases on wicked labels such as Loaded, TCR, 10Kilo, Hooj Choons, and Bushwakka's Oblong.

In the last three years, it's safe to say everyone from Coxy to Boy George has had a Smithmonger tune in their box and Monger has officially made his entry to the big leagues. The year's started off with a massive Breaks release on Boombox in January called 'Hey'. It was caned by the likes of Lee Coombs and Atomic Hooligan. This was followed by a stormer on 10kilo called 'Seen it all Before' which went in with a bullet at No. 1 in DJ Mag's Breaks chart and No. 18 on the UK Cool Cuts Chart. Oblong released 'Get it Oun' in May to huge reactions (Number 3 in Carl Cox's June chart) and Paul has just signed another Tech-House project to Visitor in Belgium. Ministry of Sound released a wicked breaks 12'' in August (No 6 in the breaks chart) and Paul has come on board with Fingerlickin' Records and Signed a 12'' for their new imprint 'VA Breaks'. Called 'Buxom', this debuted at number 7 in the breaks chart. The year is indeed looking good. He's just remixed The Propeller Heads, Rennie Pilgrem and Robert Owins and with numerous DJ dates, the future is bright for Smithmonger.

Gods & Deities

Although Balinese Hinduism is currently undergoing a reformation to bring it into the mainstream of classical Hinduism, the Balinese pantheon still includes sacred power specific to Bali, usually under the generic term bhatara or god. Of all the gods residing in nature, the most powerful are those associated with the mountains, lakes and the sea. There literally thousands of gods in the Balinese religion, the most important of whom are:

Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa.

This is the "one supreme unknowable God" and is represented as Atintya a being in meditation surrounded by flames. Atintya has gained importance in recent years because he falls in line with religious beliefs that revolve around a single god, of whom all other gods are manifestations.

Trimurthi.
This god is more generally expressed as the Trimurthi or Hindu trinity (Brahma the creator, Wisnu the preserver and Siwa the destroyer).
Dewi Sri. The beloved goddess of rice. She is the anima of a rice cult of particular beauty. Her shrines in the rice fields are simple structures of virgin bamboo. She is honored in a number of different cyclical rituals, including the daily offerings set out after cooking every day.

Bhatari Durga. She is the consort of Siwa in her ferocious aspect. She rules over demons, ghosts and witches. Her most famous manifestation in Bali is Rangda, the queen of the witches in the Calonarang dance drama.

Saraswati. She is the goddess of knowledge, wisdom and arts. She is usually depicted as a beautiful, richly dressed woman riding a goose.

Bhatara Kawitan. This is the term for the original clan ancestor. The most intimate gods are the deified ancestors. The relationship between a Balinese and his ancestors is at once reverent and practical. The souls of the dead can be absorbed into heaven only by the purification rites of the living. In return, the ancestors bestow blessings and sometimes advice through trance mediums.

Sanghyang Semara-Ratih. She/he is the symbol of sexual union and also the symbol of beauty and is able to guarantee success in all ventures, cure sickness and chase away evil.
Ida Bhatara Gunung Agung. He is the god of Mount Agung and is honored at Pura Besakih and other major temples.
Ida Bhatari Dewi Ulun Danau Batur. She is the goddess of Lake Batur and her temple is on the edge of Batur crater. Her son is called Maya Danawa.

Cremation Ceremony

Even Hindu funerals in Bali are intensely suggestive ceremonies of great cultural and religious significance. Requiring a complex apparatus and characterized by a large following, funerals are centered on cremation of the body, known as ngaben or pelebon.

This practice is considered essentig if the 5 elements making up the microcosm of the human body are to be returned to their original residence, the universe's macrocosm.

The five elements, Panca Maha Bhuta, are the earth (pertivvi), water (apah), fire (teja), air (bayu), and ether (akasa). Since the primordial dimension can only be attained through water and fire, the ashes are dispersed in the waters of the sea or if the distance is too great, in a river.

The funeral ceremony is generally led by a priest and punctuated by a lavish offering of gifts. For the occasion, a large bullock-shaped wooden structure is built and then entirely covered with white drapes if the deceased belongs to a priestly caste; in black, if not.

There are ceremonies for every stage of Balinese life but often the last ceremony-cremation-is the biggest. A Balinese cremation can be an amazing, spectacular, colorful, noisy and exciting event. In fact it often takes so long to organize a cremation that years have passed since the death.

During that time the body is temporarily buried. Of course an auspicious day must be chosen for the cremation and since a big cremation can be very expensive business many less wealthy people may take the opportunity of joining in at a larger cremation and sending their own dead on their way at the same time.

Brahmans, however, must be cremated immediately. Apart from being yet another occasion for Balinese noise and confusion it's a fine opportunity to observe the incredible energy the Balinese put into creating real works of art which are totally ephemeral.

A lot more than a body gets burnt at the cremation. The body is carried from the burial ground (or from the deceased's home if it's and 'immediate' cremation) to the cremation ground in a high, multi-tiered tower made of bamboo, paper, string, tinsel, silk, cloth, mirrors, flowers and anything else bright and colorful you can think of.

The tower is carried on the shoulders of a group of men, the size of the group depending on the importance of the deceased and hence the size of the tower. The funeral of a former rajah of high priest may require hundreds of men to tote the tower.

A long the way to the cremation ground certain precautions must be taken to ensure that the deceased's spirit does not find its way back home. Loose spirits around the house can be a real nuisance.

To ensure this doesn't happen requires getting the spirits confused as to their whereabouts, which you do by shaking the tower, running it around in circles, spinning it around, throwing water at it, generally making the trip to the cremation ground anything but a stately funeral crawl.

Meanwhile, there's likely to be a priest halfway up to tower, hanging on grimly as it sways back and forth, and doing his best to soak bystanders with holy water.

A gamelan sprints along behind, providing a suitably exciting musical accompaniment. Camera-toting tourists get all but run down and once again the Balinese prove that ceremonies and religion are there to be enjoyed.

At the cremation ground the body is transferred to a funeral sarcophagus-this should be in the shape of a bull for a Brahmana, a winged lion for a Satria and a sort of elephant-fish for a Sudra.

These days, however, almost anybody from the higher castes will use a bull. Finally up it all goes in flames-funeral tower, sarcophagus, body, the lot. The eldest son does his duty by poking through the ashes to ensures that there are bits of body left unburned.

And where does your soul go after your cremation? Why, to a heaven which is just like Bali!

Now We Move Forward!

Sekarang Kita Maju!

25th October 2002

Asana Viebeke L

.) We Balinese have an essential concept of balance. It’s the Tri Hita Karana; a concept of harmonious balance. The balance between God and humanity; Humanity with itself and Humanity with the environment. This places us all in a universe of common understanding.

.)It is not only nuclear bombs which have fallout. It is our job to minimize this fallout for our people and our guests from around the world. Who did this? It’s not such an important question for us to discuss. Why this happened – maybe this is more worthy of thought. What can we do to create beauty from this tragedy and come to an understanding where nobody feels the need to make such a statement again? This is important. This is the basis from which we can embrace everyone as a brother; everyone as a sister.

.)It is a period of uncertainty. It is a period of change. It is also an opportunity for us to move together into a better future. A future where we embrace all of humanity in the knowledge that we all look and smell the same when we are burnt. Victims of this tragedy are from all over the world.

.)The past is not significant. It is the future which is important. This is the time to bring our values, our empathy, to society and the world at large. To care. To Love.

.)The modern world brings to many of us the ability to rise above the core need for survival. Most people in the developed world no longer need to struggle to simply stay alive. It is our duty to strive to improve our quality of life.

.)We want to return to our lives. Please help us realize this wish.

.)Why seek retribution from people who are acting as they see fit? These people are misguided from our point of view. Obviously, from theirs, they feel justified and angry enough to make such a brutal statement.

.)We would like to send a message to the world - Embrace this misunderstanding between our brothers and lets seek a peaceful answer to the problems which bring us to such tragedy.

.)We embrace all the beliefs, hopes and dreams of all the people in the world with Love.

.)What hashas happened has happened. Stop talking about the theories of who did this and why. It does not serve the spirit of our people. Words of hate will not rebuild our shops and houses. They will not heal damaged skin. They will not bring back our dead.

.)Help us to create beauty out of this tragedy.

.)Our community is bruised and hurting. Our spirit can never be broken.

.)Everybody in the world is of one principle brotherhood.

Tat Wam Asi – You are me and I am you.

.)We have a concept in Bali, Ruwa Bhineda, a balance between good and bad. Without bad there can be no good. The Bad is the ‘sibling’ of the Good. Embrace this concept and we can move forward into a better world.

.)You love your husband and wife but sometimes you fight. Fear arises and shows its opposition to love. This is normal. This is a natural, essential part of life.

.)There is Sekala / Nisikala - the underworld forever in darkness merging with our world in the light.

.)These are the concepts by which we, as Balinese, live our lives. Please, we beg you, talk only of the good which can come of this. Talk of how we can reconcile our ‘apparent’ differences. Talk of how we can bring empathy and love into everybody’s lives.

.)The overwhelming scenes of love and compassion at Sanglah Hospital show us the way forward into the future. If we hate our brothers and sisters we are lost in Kali Yuga.

.)If we can Love all of our brothers and sisters, we have already begun to move into Kertha Yuga. We have already won ‘The War Against Terrorism’.

.)Thank you for all your compassion and love

Balinese Hinduism

Though Bali is multi-religious, consisting of Christian, Muslim and Buddhist minorities, the predominant religion is Hinduism.

Balinese Hinduism, called Agama Hindu Dharma, originated from Java and is a blend of Shivaism and Buddhism. The theological foundation for the religion comes from Indian philosophy while indigenous beliefs form the backbone of the rituals. This blending is perfectly acceptable in Bali as the saying goes "The truth is one; the interpretation, multiple."

In Balinese Hinduism, the indigenous beliefs manifest in the belief that nature is "power" and each element is subject to influence from spirits. Ancestor worship is also a part of the beliefs. Spirits and ancestors are treated with respect, and they are housed in a shrine and feted with offerings made from agricultural products.

As Gunung Agung is the abode of the gods and the ancestors, it is revered as the "Mother" mountain and is highly sacred to the Balinese. As water and volcanoes - considered as the wrath of the gods - come from Gunung Agung, the mountain occupies the pole of purity, kaja.

In contrast, the pole of impurity is the sea, or kelod.Balinese Hinduism revolves around this kaja-kelod axis and determines the spatial organization of rituals, architecture and daily life. One sleeps, for example, with one's head in the direction of the mountain.

Religion in Bali varies according to three principles: desa (place), kala (time) and patra (circumstances). Hinduism acknowledges five pillars of faith. They are belief in the one Supreme God (Brahaman of Sang Hyang Widdhi Wasa); belief in the soul as the universal principle of life and consciousness (atma); belief in the fruition of one's deeds (karma phala); belief in the process of birth and death (samsara); and belief in ultimate release (moksa).

One of the consequences of the principles of karma and samsara is the existence of the caste system where an individual inherits his status as a result of his or her past life. The four castes in Bali are the brahmana, who deal with religion and the holy texts; the satria or rulers; the wesia or merchants and the sudras, the lower class.

God has a variety of names. Being multiple and all pervading, he is the Ultimate Void or Sunya expanding in an infinity of murti of manifestations from which people select one as lstadewata or a personal god. Some of the names are indigenous; Sang Hyang Embang, and others of Indian Origin, Sang Hyang Parama Kawi. Ultimately however, all gods are seen as emanating from a single source.

The principle gods are Brahma, the God of Creation; Wisnu, the God of Providence; and Siwa, the God of Dissolution. These three move the world through an unending process of birth, balance and destruction. Man, a microcosm of the world, is subjected to the same process until he or she achieves moksa, blending into the Cosmos and God. The cosmos and it movement is symbolized by the swastika.

Man should endeavor to maintain the harmony of the whole system, hence the role of ritual. Only by adhering to the proper rules of behavior can the proper balance be kept between the two sets of godly and demonic forces. Balinese religion is known to the world through the richness of its rituals. Gods and demons seem to be every where and the life of the Balinese is therefore replete with rituals.

As the tools for maintaining the balance of the world there are rituals for everything imaginable, from knowledge, cleansing machines to marriage and birth ceremonies - all of different types and levels. Rituals consist of calling down the gods and the ancestors for visits from their heavenly abode in their country above the mountain. They come down during temple festivals and are entertained with dances and feted with offerings. They can also be called down through the entreaties of a priest.

Balinese rituals are ruled by a complex calendar system, a combination of the Indian Saka calendar and the Wuku calendar. The Saka year rules the agricultural cycle and is divided into lunar months and fitted into the solar calendar by the addition of an extra month, every thirtieth month. The full moon and the dark moon are the most important ritual moments of this calendar. The first day of the Saka year, however, usually in March is the day of Silence and of profound importance throughout Bali.

The Wuku year consists of a cycle of 210 days divided into thirty wuku weeks, each of which corresponds to a specific activity. There is a week of weapons and one of animals, for example. There are then other types of weeks varying from one to ten days, each having a name and number, being auspicious or inauspicious. The most important days in this system are Galungan and Kuningan, when all the ancestors come down to visit.

Temples in Bali are simple walled open yards from which people can-communicate directly with their gods and ancestors, Gods and ancestors normally "visit" their human worshipers or descendants during temple festivals (odalan). They reside in miniature houses set in the temple, the pelinggih shrines and alight with effigies of gold, coins or offerings.

During the length of their stay, the gods and their companions are symbolically bathed. feted, put to bed and entertained with dances and other shows. Meanwhile members of the temple come and go over three or more days, with offerings and to get their share of holy water sprinkled over them and the offerings during the collective prayers.

There are few societies in the world where religion plays a role such as it does in Bali. The incredible beauty and color that accompanies the rituals and offerings, which seem to be ever occurring, that Bali is continually harmonizing the world of Man with the cosmic world of the Gods.

Orderly Chaos

The Mandala Principle

Description of Orderly Chaos
According to the mandala principle, a prominent feature of tantric Buddhism, all phenomena are part of one reality. Whether good or bad, happy or sad, clear or obscure, everything is interrelated and reflects a single totality. As Chögyam Trungpa explains in this work, from the perspective of the mandala principle, existence is orderly chaos. There is chaos and confusion because everything happens by itself, without any external ordering principle. At the same time, whatever happens expresses order and intelligence, wakeful energy and precision. Through meditative practices associated with the mandala principle, the opposites of experience—confusion and enlightenment, chaos and order, pain and pleasure—are revealed as inseparable parts of a total vision of reality.
