Puppetry is a traditional art form closely connected with the long standing spiritual life of many cultures. No one knows where puppetry first began though most scholars seem to agree puppetry as an art form that came from China with the introduction of the Shadow Puppet.
For example, water puppetry was a form almost exlusively done in Vietnam. Puppets built out of wood were performed in waste high pools of water, this form dates back seven hundred years when the rice fields would flood and the villagers would entertain each other. Eventually villages would compete with each other which led to the creation of puppet societies to be secretive and exclusive, including an initiation ceremony involving drinking rooster blood!
Puppetry was used for the way of spreading myths, customs and personal knowledge by presenting moral though stories and through the POWER of example. Adults learn like children again and the unquestioned common places of stories cause people to accept the learning without resistance to the newness they bring to the mind.
