I'm undertaking the task of builing a PC primarily for learning Maya on.
I havn't built a computer in a while (3 or 4 years) so am trying to get up to speed on things.
Any suggestions on a good bang for the buck for hardware choices, with an eye towards quick software rendering times? Good hardware rendering would be nice to I guess, but I don't know if I need to spend a fortune on a graphics card (is skimping on this OK? It seems like most low-mid end graphics cards today should do the trick for all but the most complex scenes right?)
I'm going to be running Maya 4.5 on XP.
I'm learning right now, so this isn't going to be a machine I'm going to be doing any real complex production on, and I am on a pretty tight budget. I'm hoping to come in under $700, prefferably lower (not including a monitor).
Any tips/pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Tue, May 27, 2008 - 11:44 AMGraphics card and memory are key.
You need a true OpenGL card and not a gaming card, otherwise you'll have problems with things like Artisan and Paint Effects. FireGL and nVidia Quadros are the most common choices. You can find low end versions of these for under $200.
Memory - as much as you can afford. -
