Hello everyone!

Ms. Zuza, Lesley Inman, and I (Akasha Afsana) have just launched a new Tribal/Tribal Fusion website for the Twin City area (Minneapolis/St. Paul) -and surrounding areas - in Minnesota. Please bookmark our website and take a look to see what we have coming up!

www.tctribal.org

This website will have a bevy of information, such as upcoming shows and workshops, artists page with local teachers and talent, links to great purveyors of goods, dance schools and more! If you would like to be a part of the new wave, please consider becoming a member for only $5 A YEAR! This will get you in on our monthly blasts where you will be privy to information before the general public, you'll also get "early bird" opportunities to sign up for classes/workshops/performances, you'll be able to list on the events (TC and surrounding areas) and resources pages, AND you'll be entered into our quarterly drawing for a gift basket of goodies from local dance businesses (dance clothing, jewelry, accessories, classes, and more!). These gift baskets will range in value from $75 - $150 each!!

So for $5 a year, you get ALL THAT!! Man! That's the best $5 I've ever spent!!

Please forward this on to everyone you know. We can only be as successful as our support group is strong! :)

Thank you kindly! Have a wonderful day.

Steampunk is a newly emerging style of dance, not yet cultivated, but has been a style of couture, popular among Fashionistas and Sci-Fi lovers for several decades. Akasha loves this neo-Victo-futuristic style, and decided in the fall of 2008 to fuse this genre to dance.

Steampunk Savvy starts out with a discussion of what Steampunk is, the stylizations of it, how it fits within bellydance, and how to make it your own. Be sure to bring a notebook and floor mat, as there will be a plethora of information and visual aids!

Be ready to explore steampunk styled dance exercises in the latter portion of the class; Akasha will teach combinations that you can work into your own choreographies.

We had an amazing time at 3rd Coast and offer our inexhaustible thanks to Zymirrah and Sahira of Urban Gypsy for being instigators, producers, trouble-makers and putting on 2 rounds of one helluva show! Wow, you guys - WOW. Big love to Ariellah - mentor, ass-kicker and friend. Awestruck thanks to John Compton, intimidating as hell and one of the nicest guys on earth. Congrats and hugs out to the MN Onslaught: Zuza, Akasha and Nilat for their beautiful peacock number and compassionate rides; Tara - for kicking it but good on Friday night; Amina - for the 'slowest dance she's ever done' (absolutely lovely), heart-to-heart talks, and so much backstage help we are speechless. Hugs to new friends and inspirations: Artemis, for taking us a bit under her wing (and tucking ... endless tucking); Joy Herbst, the nurse practitioner by day and dancer extraordinaire by night ... for friendship and protection against would-be torturers; Danielle and Kelly from Brazen Bellies, for Wild Turkey and Dr. Pepper ... utterly devious and delightful. We'll see you all soon, but never soon enough.

Well, step right up, because this show is the place to do it! No holds barred! This show ain't for the faint of heart or the easily shocked. No sirree-bob! We aim to please and everyone will go home satisfied! It'll be the talk about town!

Afsana will be putting on a bi-annual show, in the winter and summer, showcasing experienced fusion dancers. Although show themes will vary, the underlying purpose of this event is to provide a performance venue for cutting edge fusion dancing. Some examples might be fusing salsa, tribal, Asian, modern or industrial dancing with bellydance. We want to present a very entertaining and unique show!!
The show will be on Saturday, January 31st from 7 – 9.
What we will need from you, if you want to participate:

* your style of dance (a mini description would help a lot to keep variety at it’s peak – it will remain secret until the show)
* your song title & length (time is limited to 5 minutes for solos/duets and 7 minutes for groups of 3 or more)

All pertinent information will be sent out by the first of January, including a request for your music for the master disc. We will have postcards made for the show, and we’ll contact you to see if you’d like some to hand out. We’ll also email the PDF for you to pass on.

After our last practice, we talked about life, liberty and a love of performance. All of us are holding our breath to see what happens in the next presidential election and where that takes our economy and our hopes for the future on the world stage. Although talk of a national recession and depression is sweeping and broad and scary, there are real signs of struggle here at home. For many right here in our dance community, there has been job loss and pennies pinched about as far as they will go. It's one thing to cancel travel plans and forsake a proper vacation because things are tight; it's another thing entirely to go through your grocery list trying to decide if you really need the $4 butter. These are difficult times and there is a lot of suffering at hand.

In the trenches, the things that sustain us and fortify us for the long haul are usually the first to go - and that includes our entertainments as well as our health care. We know that time isn't the only challenge to dance anymore ... and we are dealing with that ourselves as well as hearing about it from our friends.

We love our big, bawdy shows, but we need to practice some restraint now - for the sake of the cost of putting them on and keeping ticket prices easily affordable. When we talk about bringing guests to the Twin Cities for study, we approach the opportunity in terms of possible payment plans and the reality of low attendance. We are currently balancing not only our dancing together with our individual outside efforts, but how we know life is going for others out there. We want to have fun and create opportunities for amazing dance to happen ... and we want to be grounded in reality and sensitive to what is happening in the world.

So ... for now, we are going to concentrate on getting ready for our trip to Texas in January and wait on our larger projects until 2009, which postpones the next "Djinn HARDCORE" originally targeted for February (we'll save that for next spring). We are currently scheming around some dynamite intimate dance happenings and are also pondering what we can easily do as fundraisers to assist local charities who have been hit particularly hard by the downward turn in our money matters. We'll post all of our stuff here and as well as the website and look forward to having you join us when you can.

We hope that all of you are well and happy. Keep dancing.

Hey all. This summer, there will be two mini-sessions offered at the Hopkins Center for the Arts. The dance studio is smashing!

Check out www.bohemianunderground.net for further details and instructions on how to register. It's a great way to kick-off the hot days of summer.

Here are some details on the actual classes:

California Roll - Tribal Fusion with a Taste of San Francisco
Kick off the summer with a workshop in the most exciting and innovative style of belly dance. In this mini-session, you will learn posture, movements and attitude that create this stunning style. Isolations will be taught through demonstration and verbal breakdown in an easy to follow format. The isolations will also be strung into combinations and eventually into a complete dance to great music. Each class within the session will focus on different movements and isolations while building upon the growing choreography. It is suggested you bring along water and a yoga mat; each class will begin and end with yoga.
TIME: Saturdays at 6:00pm-7:30 pm
DATES: July 12, July 19, July 26, August 16 and August 23
COST: $12/drop-in; $50 for complete mini-session

From Mumbai to New Delhi - Introduction to Bhangra and Bollywood
Sink yourself into the allure and mystery of India. This mini-session is a great way to introduce yourself to both the high energy Bhangra dance (a folk dance of Northern India/Punjab) and the free-spirited moves of Bollywood. In each class, we will work through both Bhangra and Bollywood moves and combinations building upon a complete dance. This is not a class for the slug. You will sweat! This dance will make you laugh and realize you have never had so much fun while sweating at the same time. Come with a good supportive bra, water, yoga mat (warm up and cool down will be yoga), any knee support you may need and a 'can-do' attitude because you can do it. And you WILL love it, I promise.
TIME: Saturdays at 7:30pm-9:00pm
DATES: July 12, July 19, July 26, August 16 and August 23
COST: $12/drop-in; $50 for complete mini-session

Tremendous to be a part of the artist roster as well as the warmth and energy of an outstanding audience.

Credit where credit is due: this was a Hypatia Innais production - her vision, her music selection, and her choreography. Thank you for making my mediocre bhangra moves look mesmerizing ... which is nothing short of miraculous (and this is not self-deprecation, but plain gospel truth). Way to hip check this deal out of the park, grrl.

And where would our super-fly moves be without Saahira's "I will sew fully lined anarchy-print panel skirts in 14 minutes". Man. Your phenomenal talent with needle and thread is almost as spectacular as your dancing. Thanks for making us all look good.

Last but never least, huge thanks to our practically-family and friends for coming out to see us perform; it never gets old to look up and see familiar faces. For your tolerance, your encouragement, your kindness, humor, and critical feedback ... our boundless gratitude.

What is sooooo totally cool is that for those dancers who did the same performance both nights, no 2 were exactly the same, so it was as much fun to watch the same dancers the second night as it was the first night.

Thank you SO MUCH, Djinn ladies, for hosting this event. It proves beyond doubt that this venue most definitely serves a unique purpose. I just think there may be a need for a much larger space next time, with such a packed audience... ;-)

Last winter, an idea was brought up to create a calendar featuring our big, beautiful, belly-dancer (BBBD) sisters and there was such a huge, positive response that this idea has become a reality!

The creative mindset behind this idea, BBBD Meghan, asked BBBD Kamala Devi to chair this project, and with the help of some very motivated BBBD sisters, we are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications from other BBBD sisters for the BBBD 2008 Calendar!

Click on the following link for additional information:

Please read all the information carefully and follow the instructions. If you have any questions, please send a Tribe PM to Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi.

The deadline for your application is July 31, 2008.

We are all looking forward to this project and are eager to see how the calendar turns out. We hope that this is successful enough to become an annual calendar.
Thanks everyone!
Schedule
11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Performance Focus
Delve into all the things those videotapes never tell you about: tricks for stage fright, facial expression, choosing music, fitting moves to the music, blocking a song, improvisation, default dance steps, the importance of isolations, costume issues, and much more. This is for all types of dancers, and will be useful for both Tribal and Cabaret belly dance.

2-4 p.m.
Liquid Isolations and the Essence of Sword Dance
For Beginners to Advanced dancers. Distilled sword dance technique: instruction in extending hip, arm, and belly isolations and making them look ever-so-smooth-and-gooey while using sword balancing points. We’ll practice sword hold techniques and dramatic presentation, work on those all-important arms, and block a slow and sensual sword dance.

Evening show featuring Sabine, local talent and regional dancers

About Sabine
Sabine is a dance artist who has studied Middle Eastern Dance since 1988, and has been performing tribal style belly dance since 1999. She honors the roots of Tribal Belly dance in her classes, with troupe Tribalation! and with student troupe Sister Celebration. Dancers are taught how to cue and follow movements in an improvisational yet synchronous manner, creating beautiful dance energy on the stage and in the studio.
Sabine is a master of “Raks al Sayf,” the sword dance, where the grace and flow of the dance movements are contrasted by the dangerous sharpness of the huge Turkish Scimitars that she balances. Sabine has taught her own special brand of “Dangerous Sword Dancing” in workshops and festivals all over the Northwest. Sabine brings a strong and unique presence to the stage. Her dancing has been called “powerful”, “mesmerizing”, and “beautiful”.

Sabine is active in producing dance and cultural events in Oregon. She teaches weekly classes, and travels to teach workshops in sword dance and many aspects of Tribal and Cabaret style belly dance.

One of the greatest advantages of being in a collective is that your solo work does not compete with your group work, it actually enhances it. Following your individual dreams simply brings more to the family table. I am beyond fortunate to work with two fiery and utterly amazing djinn who are - it goes without saying - completely mischievous. Long may our madness continue! I cannot drag them with me into the shadows, however, because that is not their choice and passion; for them, a little goth goes a long way.

And so, with their blessing and encouragement, I am pleased to announce the formation of my gothic production company, MOURNING DOLL PLAYHOUSE. MDP's tribe is up, as is my new persona/alias moderating it, Mrs. Tansy Undercrypt; www.mourningdollplayhouse.com will be launched soon, but www.myspace.com/mourningdoll is up and running. I extend the invitation to any and all of you to join the tribe, frequent the sites, become Tansy's friend, and join us for some fearsome fun. I say "us", because I am joined in this effort by none other than my dear sister, Nicole (also with a new alias, Arabella Dreadpenny).

MDP will take the gothlas from Mischievous Djinn and will add them to dark cabarets, Victorian theatrical vignettes, opulent absinthe dreams, industrial raves and a host of other fantasies (or nightmares) ; current projects underway take us into the winter of 2008.

CALL FOR PERFORMERS: "RAQS NOX: Beyond the Pale" will begin our gothla series near Halloween this year. Exact date and location soon to be announced on the Mourning Doll Playhouse tribe. If you are interested in performing, please contact me or Nicole through any of the means mentioned above. :-) (FYI: "nox" is Latin for "night" ... "raqs nox" is a complete pulverization of two languages into a pitiful translation of "night dance(s)"; I went there shamelessly because it's freakin' catchy ... but I offer my humble apologies to diehard linguists everywhere!)

Thank you for reading. Thank you for being tempted ... and welcome to it, my lovelies.

And so, the Djinn met yesterday for a vegetarian BBQ to plot out the next few months. Here's a gleeful peek at what's coming:

The Big Stuff:

A stage show in early October; expect communication from Hypatia on this one, as she is the deliciously evil mastermind.
Late March of 2008: Mischievous Djinn is proud to bring ARIELLAH (Aflalo) to Minneapolis to ring in a fine fusion spring; there will be a workshop opportunity and a show.
The Bounty of Fall Stuff:

Haflas: Al-Bahira fetes and the glorious return of Pratt First Saturdays
Gothlas: an official "gothla" to be held either on Halloween (which is a Wednesday this year) or very, very near
A Wildcat Sanctuary fundraiser
A "Will Dance For Food" food shelf fundraising event

As Mischievous Djinn passes the milestone of its 1st anniversary and heads shamelessly into its second year, we thank you for your inspiration, collaboration, guidance, interest, and support. What a ride it's been, but ya can't beat this shit no how. :-)

This was posted by a friend of mine on her blog. She (and actually I did too) received it in an email from Daily OM. Thought it was something to chew on today.

Women’s Support

Becoming Our Own Role Models

As women embrace the fullness of who they are as individuals, they may find themselves supporting other women, helping others to reach the level of inner comfort and outer freedom that they themselves have found. Among those who are less sure of themselves and their place in the world, it may be more common to criticize other women than to seek their help. But there are things that a woman can only learn from another woman, as there are things about being a man that can only be learned from other men. We all recognize that we have much to learn from each other regardless of gender, but sometimes we could use a supportive role model that gives us a more precise example of what and who we can become.

There was a time where women stood together in a bond of sisterhood, women supporting women. It is only natural that the pendulum swings out of balance for a while so that we may have the experience of what we do not want. It is up to women to bring the pendulum back into balance and bring back the sacred sisterhood we yearn for at our core.

If we envision a world where women support each other and help each other find their place in an ever-changing world, then we can become the change we want to see. Jealousy, envy, criticism, and judgment are refuges for the insecure. As we help others to become self-assured, we create a world in which all people help each other, regardless of gender. Only women can make the change in how women are seen and understood, not just by other women but by the world at large. The way we speak about each other to other women and to the men in our lives informs everyone to treat us with the respect that all women, and all people, deserve.

“Tribal Fusion” by Heather Stants
edited by Tom Rehor

Tribal Fusion is an evolving dance form and in order to understand its direction one must explore its roots. In the late 1980s and early 1990s the American Belly Dance world was struck by the otherworldly beauty and power of a new form of dance emerging from a community of visionary artists in the San Francisco Bay Area. Carolena Nericcio and her company, Fat Chance Belly Dance, had begun a transformation in American Belly Dance with their creation of American Tribal Style (ATS). This form focuses on the company dancing as a unit, most often in an improvisational format of leaders and followers all attuned to the same movements, cues and combinations. The movement vocabulary as well as the costuming is an eclectic blend of influences from the many cultures throughout North Africa, India, Spain and the Middle East. The ATS costume usually consists of layers of pantaloons, skirts, belts and cholis made of antique textiles and tribal jewelry. The heavy costumes add to the earthiness of the movement style.

The beauty of ATS has spread to dancers nationally and internationally and - like any evolving art form - as it reaches new artists it takes on their characteristics and influences. The latest variant of this "tribal" dance is given the title "Tribal Fusion". A new generation of dancers has discovered ATS and stamped it with their experience and imagination creating a new dance form altogether. "Tribal Fusion" has become a catch-all label for the various representations of this evolving style. Tribal Fusion music choices range from authentic tribal recordings to modern DJ mixed tracks. The costumes may be comprised of layers of authentic textiles and tribal jewelry, scaled down sleek club wear or anything in between. The movement vocabulary may incorporate elements of ATS, modern dance, hip-hop as well as the diverse dances of the world. The performances can be improvisational, tightly choreographed or a combination of the two. Because Tribal Fusion is still in its infancy as an art form, its rules are not yet firmly established. As it continues to evolve, its relation to ATS grows more distant and controversial.

There have been many talented performers who have been making their mark in the world of Tribal Fusion Belly Dance over the past ten years.
The artist who many identify as the pioneer of this new fusion style is
Jill Parker, an original member of Fat Chance Belly Dance. In the late
1990s Jill and her dance company, Ultra Gypsy, began to scale down the tribal costume, expand the movement vocabulary, work with modern DJ mixed music and play with theatrical themes in their performances. This had a significant impact on tribal dancers and opened up the floodgates of Tribal Fusion innovation. In early 2000 Urban Tribal Dance Company was born in San Diego, CA under the direction of Heather Stants, and has since popularized an innovative style inspired by hip hop, modern and interpretive dance, emphasizing flexibility and athleticism with a more streamlined costume to highlight movement. Two of Urban Tribal's original members have also made major contributions to Tribal Fusion costuming. Mardi Love set the trend with her tribal inspired soft yarn belts and cowry shell hair adornments and Melodia Medley created a line of dance pants that have become the standard for the Tribal Fusion community. Another artist to make significant contribution to the evolution of Tribal Fusion is Rachel Brice, widely recognized as the first Tribal Fusion soloist. Her approach to isolations and yoga infused dance training has crossed stylistic boundaries and expanded the number of Tribal Fusion enthusiasts worldwide. Many artists continue to create and expand upon this style, pushing the boundaries of Belly Dance with their theatricality, musical choice, costuming and venue selection. Tribal Fusion continues to be in a state of evolution.

The innovative voices carving out the path of Tribal Fusion have hit on an artistic expression that borrows from cultures of the past and takes them into the future. Tribal Fusion is a new art form with as many interpretations as there are artists performing. Festivals and events dedicated to ATS, Tribal Fusion and other related dance have sprung up all over the United States. The Tribal Belly Dance community has embraced fusion exploration. It could be many more years of pushing boundaries before Tribal Fusion settles into a definitive style, although for now it remains a testament to the enduring qualities of community, creativity and self expression within the world of belly dance.

Now...I'm not looking for sympathy. Not at all. What I'm looking with this post is to start generating some positive energy. This bellydance community has grown immensely over the past 12 months and it is going to keep changing (from what I've been catching up on lately here on tribe) for the good of all of us. And thanks to all of us too.

SO...today as we get ready to hunker down for the worst blizzard in 8 years...here is my question to you all.

Who is inspiring you right now. I know we've done this question before but I have found lately that this has changed for me. Growth does that to you. And as we are all getting ready for spring haflas and guild shows, I'm curious what is keeping you moving.

I'll start. My largest inspiration right now is Mardi Love. I got to meet this quiet Indigo member in DC and she is a beautiful creature. She is the driving force behind their look and choreography. I think during the Q&A session, Rachel indicated that Mardi does about 80% of the choreography. Mardi is also a musician herself; pianist. Taking a class from her was a great honour. She is witty and intelligent as well as very artistic. Loved it. She has become my new inspiration as I get myself ready for some upcoming performances that I'm planning for myself.

Alright...now your turn!

Today, Hypatia is Washington DC-bound ... for the 5-day intensive "Master's Series" with Rachel Brice, Zoe Jakes, and Moria. I told her I'd have a bouquet of Ace bandages, small packages of ibuprofin, and Ben Gay sent to her hotel suite later in the week. Oh, yeah ... there's gonna be some screaming sinews in the DC area! That, and a whole lot of accomplishment and amazing beauty. I wouldn't be surprised if she arrived home totally transformed into a whole new (and extremely tired) creature. Rock on, Hypatia ... and watch doing weird things to your quads.

I find that most of us (if not all of us) are reluctant to talk about our areas of mastery ... for fear it will make us sound like a complete ass, prompt someone else to tell us differently, or invite 300 people to write essays on dance and moral turpitude. *groan*

I believe that we all have a "short list" of natural talents and ready skills that we can claim in their glory - whether they are a product of our genes or our study - and we can appreciate them without inflating our importance or disparaging someone else. To that end, I would love to hear what's on your Short List: what do you do really well? What came naturally? What did you really labor at and finally get to your great delight? How does your personality fit into your dancing?

It's risky, because you KNOW there are going to be eye rolls out there in the aether where you can't see them. Please consider joining me in saying "Oh, what the hell" and doing it anyway. Have the courage to be singularly proud of your accomplishments by saying what they are.

I'll go, and put my money where my mouth is, eh?

What came naturally? The 3/4 shimmy. Apparently, my big butt just wants to do that all of the time - may the people behind me in the line at the DMV forgive me.
The ready skill (I got the basics and then it seemed fairly easy to correct with a little help and effort)? Undulations (down, not up)
Other? I have a good brain for the theatrics of it all ... themes and vignettes, etc. I just think that way in general about everything anyway. I dance best "in character".

And you?

Hello all, I just wanted to share something with you guys. It has nothing to do with dance (but in a way maybe it does for well-being of the self).

I received a letter in the mail yesterday from an Auntie back home, I send her a Xmas card every year even though I don’t receive one back or rarely do. In the letter she took the time to write 2 pages and sent 3 pictures, I have not seen her in approx 20+yrs and at that time her husband had recently passed away. I was amazed when I looked at the photos…. She looked soo beautiful and soo fit it was like I was looking at her from years ago. In the letter she wrote a sentence that for some reason has made me feel so good that I wanted to brush my worries and stresses away. I don’t know why it did, maybe I was feeling blu or maybe tired… who knows but wanted to share it with you guys. Here is what she wrote.

“I went to Auckland on the 13th of Dec to celebrate my birthday with Franz and Geri, I am 86 now. I must say, I don’t feel that old and still enjoy life;.

That wee sentence for some reason has inspired me, at 86 she lives alone, in the same house she has had nearly as long as I can remember, her husband is gone many years, her 3 boys are all grown and across the world, she still loves to garden, dresses fashionably (she always had beautiful clothes) and is totally independent.
Rock on Tante Riet – you’re my hero!

It's always a little risky to actually meet someone you've admired from afar; there's really no guarantee you'll like them off of the pedestal you've put them on. ESPECIALLY if they're Girl Crush material. So ... with much trepidation, I showed up for Saturday's workshop with Rachel Brice silently chanting "Please don't let her be a diva; please don't let her be an idiot; please don't let her be condescending; please don't let her be an asshole" in a kind of trancey mantra. Me in my track pants facing 4 hours of yoga and drills ... praying hard.

I can very honestly and happily report that Ms. Brice is warm and funny and genuinely interested in being an effective teacher (she mentioned some things about good teaching that her yoga master had shared with her and presumably challenged her with). She is also, now -at the very height of her popularity and celebrity, one of the most humble creatures I have ever met.

Yes, she crucified my chublets for hours and hours. My mind is filled with things to work on and practice with and commit to. Yes, I got my money's worth and the choreography is kick ass. Yes, I walked away knowing the secret to "Rachel Brice Arms", so I can cross that off my Must Learn list and move it to the Must Obsess About/Practice list.

All of that, and still it was her presence and her ... energy ... that made the most impact for me.

She looks 25 if she's a day. And she's 35 ... or almost 35. Her presence was light. She wasn't trying too hard or worried about anything or even talking too much. She wasn't in a rush. She gave everyone who asked a question her complete attention. She accepted the fact that people would mob her on breaks and after class and seemed delighted instead of resigned. She mentioned changes she'd made to her practice around injuring herself or even growing older ... and learning to appreciate rest as much as movement. She was incredibly, almost unbelieveably real.

Her life has Flow. Oh, yes, she is undeniably the Queen Shit of the Galaxy at the moment and it's no crime to enjoy that. But she talks about the upcoming Serpent Rouge tour with true amazement about the opportunity and fear that it will be too weird and bomb. She talks about being a restaurant dancer and having her mom remind her to not pant her yoga deep breathing all over the customers' food as she went table-to-table ... in the same breath she talks about how much The Indigo has to practice right now for all of their upcoming stuff ... and then makes you do 20 minutes of chest lifts until you could cry. You can see, without too much effort, the Rachel Brice of 85 in the Rachel of 35 ... how this part of the journey will move into the next and she'll go with it ... and she'll end up teaching yoga on a tropical island, content and happy and looking 70 if she's a day.

She's worked really hard and of that I have no doubt. And no one is completely perfect or ego-less or free of desire. But, if you get to take a workshop with her in the future, you'll see what I mean ... she is not a product of her ambition, but of her dedication.

And THAT is what makes me think. And think. And think. THAT is what has me wondering about my own flow. And about yours. (It's true; you're my friends and dance colleagues and I wonder about you and your lives.) What is shaping my Final Product? What am I a product OF - my ambition, my desperation, my misdirection, my competition, my dedication, what I study, what I express, what I love?

I came back from Chicago knowing that I have a helluva lot of work to do in the physical fitness and endurance category, but I also turned a corner down there ... and came back knowing that the only person I have to prove anything to is myself.

Dance just got a LOT more fun ... if that was even possible. *wicked grin*

I know Selah and I both were going to post how our weekend went since some of the things we took away were similar while there were insights I think we both learned that impacted us individually.

Did we survive?(per Zuza on the other post) It was awesome. Saturday was military muscle/movement drilling. Awesome! Thankfully for me, Rachel does a fantastic job on warming up and cooling down the body with yoga so I was good to go still on Sunday. We ended up skipping the show on Saturday night in lieu of getting drunk and having great conversation instead at the hotel. I figure I'll be going to the Serpant Rouge preview in Washington DC this coming Sunday (Zoe, Mardi and Rachel) so I could hold tight. And Selah was pretty pooped. It was a great day and a great evening.

Sunday was fantastic. We worked on some very fun choreography using the isolations, locks and moves we learned the day before. Just a great time.

Overall, a fantastic, yet tiring, weekend. The tiredness is more from the travelling. Flying and getting your way around a unfamiliar town can be exhausting on the mind, body and soul. However, I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

Rachel Brice is a WONDERFUL artist and teacher. It is all payoff from YEARS of work and dedication. She is one of the finest teachers I have ever seen, and not just in dance. She makes NO ONE feel 'stupid' or incompetent and gave EVERYONE undivided attention. When you talked to her with a question or just even in conversation, she is with you. You are sharing a moment with her. As well, walking into the room, there was absolutely NO DIVA behaviour. It was amazing and is hard to explain. This workshop was full of no egos. I think this was established by Rachel and the amazingly fun people of Chicago. I have never met a nicer bunch of people. They were all sweet, helpful and genuienly nice.

My take-away...is that I need to rest this week. :-) I'm going to continue my yoga practice but with me spending the next 7 days (starting Saturday) dancing 6 hours a day, I need to relax. Yoga will be great to get my flexibility and bendability going for the week ahead. I'm going to spend this time gathering my thoughts about how I can develop my daily practice (yoga, dance, personal growth, career) and make some decisions on what I need to change to accomplish my goals in life.

We did take some pics, I'll try to post some to share. I got a great shot of Selah in beginning bow pose...rock on Selah!!!

And it's impact to the MDjinn? Well, you guys will have to hold tight. :-) Although we were drunk (Saturday night) or just seriously tired (Sunday night), we did do some 'scheming'. Actually the drinks probably helped with this. Just remember the Guild Show is NOT as far away as it seems.

Each showcase evening – held quarterly at our studio - will feature performances by an established dancer and two lesser known/avocational/new dancers; a minimum donation will be suggested for the show and the box will be split among the performers. Beverages will be provided to the audience members, but seating will be limited. More detailed information will be available closer to the event. Our first showcase will take place at the end of March.
Interested Dancers: if you would like to be considered for the 'Djinn & Tonic' series, we'd love to hear from you! The only requirement for lesser known/avocational/new dancers is that you must be able to perform a 12-15 minute complete dance set. This would be a terrific opportunity to spread your wings – and we would love to help you flaunt your fine stuff out in the world! Take a deep breath ... and send us a message. :-)

The Profile Center is on University Avenue SE just east of the U of M; it houses two wings of sound-proofed musicians' studios, two professional recording studios, two performance theaters, the offices of an entertainment lawyer, and the Casablanca restaurant – specializing in Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and North African food. There is both on-street and off-street parking as well as terrific access by bus.

We are the first and only dancers to take up residence in the building so far, but we're definitely not the only creative souls in the place! We are grateful to have found this spot through the auspices of Mr. Undercrypt; it's bright and funky ... and it's home.

We're planning an open house in February and will post the details both here and on our website. We hope you'll come and help us celebrate!

Rather than fielding a number of individual inquiries, I'm going to provide the basic information here - so that it's handy for everyone.

At www.profileeventcenter.com, you can take a look at the two performance spaces all done up. They do a banner business in weddings, so they hit that hard. One space is small (fitting 200 people or so, I'd guess) with a raised stage at one end and a very large portable dance floor. The second space is enormous, with a lit balcony for concerts, etc.

To find out more about cost and availability, please contact Giovanni Elli at 612-378-2200, ext. 11. His cell phone is 612-802-6652 and he's available by email at elli@profilemusic.com.

For studio information, the contact is Patrick Kellis at 612-378-2200; his cell is 612-309-6551, and his email is pkellis@pcklaw.com

Some details:

They are fine with hafla/gothla-type performances happening in the studio which are "pass-the-hat"; they do not allow commercially-advertised classes and events in the studios, but will (of course) in the performance spaces. The studios are meant to be rehearsal spaces only. They are more flexible about workshops. We have no problems with the arrangement as we don't teach classes, but you'll need to speak to Patrick about the finer points if you do or your group does.

As the studios are sound-proofed, there is no delicacy for acoustic instruments in the space. Acoustic instruments would need to be miked for performance ... as is the case in most venues anyway.

Yes, we have been there when someone else was really rocking out. We felt a base line for a couple of seconds and then that was it. Sound-proofing is gud.

No, we do not know the exact prices for the stages; I think the huge one with the balcony is about $1600 for a Friday or Saturday night. I think Mr. Elli may have the power to wheel-and-deal, but we haven't had the need to do so yet. Call them directly if you have questions.

Here's wishing us all a bold and wonderful dancing year!

I am curious where/why/how you each choice your dance name. These names say something about the individual and perhaps who/what you would like to be. Mine has two meanings depending on where you look. One meaning for SAAHIRA is witch or sorceress this appealed to me because it sounded like it gave me power lol and I hoped that when I finally learned to dance beautifully that people would be under a sort of spell when I danced lol… no laughing that is what first came to my silly wee head. The second meaning for SAAHIRA is person of the night, I thought that sounded mysterious and I love to be mysterious.

Posted on another tribe was a discussion of whether a singular focus on building strong technique crippled self-expression in the long-term. The answers were FASCINATING. The string opener is pasted below; I'd love to hear what you all think!

Maria on The Indigo: "So I saw this realy cool show on PBS a few nights ago and they were talking about artists and their art (more specifically about pianists) anyways, during their discussion they brought up the subject of technique. It was thought that once you've established a strong grounded technique, it could get in the way of pure art and expression. Me being an avid driller daily was now paying attention...

He put it this way... it's like your driving along in a cadillac (the cadillac being your technique) and if your so caught up with being in the cadillac, then you've forgot the most important thing, where you are going and what is going on outside right now....

So I do believe that technique is important and it is like oiling up your macine to keep it working like clockwork... but that discussion really helped me remember the value of my art as an expression through me... what do I place first??? sometimes (ashamed, i am...) I've placed technique first without thinking about it. Are we courageous enough to let go all of our technique for the purest of expression? hmmmm..... "

Now, I want to challenge us further! It's easy to say "blah blah blah you need a balance", but I seriously doubt people are out in the aether building daily practices on a foundation of 15 mins/drills and 15/mins free-form expression. So ... if you lob a snippet about the glories of balance out here, talk about how you are working to achieve it ... or the biggest challenges to it.

Wooooooooooooooo! *opens the floodgates*

Rachel stepped into a conversation (as moderator) about the size of dancers' breasts which was fast becoming a runaway train of who didn't like what about their shape. She stopped the whole show with a simple request: "I want you all to go and practice for the same amount of time you've been on Tribe and then come back to tell us about it" (paraphrased). It was a wake-up call for me - me of the Nightly Email Timewarp Extravaganza. Oh, sure, I can type ... but how are my shimmies lookin'?

It is my intention to return to a daily practice and I invite you to join me. Come onto this tribe and tell us every little thing, but dance as much as you surf; give your hips a minute of attention for every word you utter ... and tell us about THAT, too. Do you have a routine? What is it? How often do you do it? What are you concentrating on? What are your goals?

To start us off, here is Rachel's own daily routine (post-yoga), shared with workshop participants in Florida:

100 hip ups
100 hip downs
30 chest lifts
30 chest slides in each direction
30 chest circles in each directions
50 rolls down
30 roll/lock combos (roll down, roll up, around (Umi), roll up)
50 rolls up
30 Umi (hip circles) in each direction
30 Maya
30 Taqsim

WHEW. One last thing: for those of you who are tempted to dismiss her as a 20-something eensy boneless weedlet with no excuse NOT to be perfect, nice try. I know your pain. I WANT to dismiss her hard work ... or at least I did - until she joined the Dancers 35+ tribe late last week. Yep. Rachel Brice is about to turn 35 years old.
