I'm wondering....it is feasible to make black powder...but if you're using a cap and ball type system, how would make the caps? There's plenty of foil to use...beyond that I would have no idea where to start.

Re: Cap and ball
Mon, June 8, 2009 - 7:18 PMFrom what I understand making black powder from scratch is a very labor intensive and time consuming project. If you have the components, mainly the sulfur and Potassium nitrate (charcoal is really easy) then you should not have much of a problem. As for the caps I will have to do a little more research on it. I have a black powder rifle and I have shot it all of 5 times. It is a time consuming and challenging hobby that I might get back into later. -

Tue, June 9, 2009 - 6:28 PMI shot black powder during my first marriage...which may mean something, I'm not sure.
I'm starting outlines for the sequel of Forever Faire...and while alot of folks might disagree with the premise, I don't think modern ammunition is coming back anytime soon. So I envision black powder coming back...labor intensive, true...but certain important and worth buying or bartering for. Making the caps would be interesting.
Alot of the old gunslingers, particular Wild Bill Hickock stayed with cap and ball pistols considering them more reliable.
I'm hoping to get a Navy Colt in .36 caliber this year and get back to shooting powder again.
