Survival is not always stocking up food and supplies awaiting for things to go wrong. Survival can be an every day affair, as some here can attest growing up and now. Especially now with the economy.
One of the key points of financial survival is get rid of your debts asap. Destroy your credit cards is you can, but still keep one or two for EMERGENCY use only. Cut them up, burn them, dip them in acid, etc, etc.
Another thing to have, IF you can do that, is jewlery and precious metals. Lot of people think gold and silver bars or coins will work, and in a way they will, but what will attract people is good quality jewlery.
Here in Arabia, the Sultans wealth were carried by their wives in the form of jewlery. Necklasses, earings, bracelts, piercings....
My wife has taken part in that in a way and we've been able to get 22k gold jewlery CHEAP! They sell by the weight and a bit of workmanship. A 22k gold bracelt that was given to my mom, we paid under $500. She had it appraised for innsurance and it was apraised at 3k. Now, how much would a gold bar or coin be worth if they weighed the same as the bracelet?
Everyone talks about freedom, being free. Total freedom is no possible in this day and age, unless you're a hermit in the remote wilderness. But if you have ANY form of contact with civilization, total freedom is not possible, as it will be comprimised from laws, customs, tolls, and basic trade. Nothing is truely free. But to have financial freedom and being dept free is probably the closest thing you can have to being free within society as you can get.
Just my .02 worth.

Re: Finances
Sat, July 12, 2008 - 7:46 PMGetting ride of all dept is definitely a smart move. Credit cards serve a purpose and should be used wisely. I am not an expert on jewelry but as long as there is a stable society it will have value. That goes for precious metals. If there is an unstable society gold will have little value. Food and weapons and skills will be worth more. Learn about the tax code, and how money really works. Avoid things like 401K's and IRA's, they where created by the government and have flaws built into them so that you will loose money. -

Re: Finances
Sun, July 13, 2008 - 12:37 PMMany many years ago (about two or three decades) I was listening to a financial expert on the radio talk about the foolishness of buying gold and silver. And every so often I hear the same thing...gold and silver are not financial securities.
But you know, you can't change human nature. And human nature tends to like gold and silver if only because there is so little of it.
Over the years we've stockpiled old silver coins...and new silver coins...and the selling price (with the exception of gold which we have little of) has never gone down. We have a bit of silver bullion also. Our girls received 1/8 ounce gold coins when they were kids, and lo and behold...when cash was a bit short for college texts, those itty bitty coins paid for several books.
(Just to see if it would work, I took a few silver coins...real silver from the 1880's and purchase groceries at a small mom & pop Latino grocery store. I asked the owner first if he would take these coins at more than legal tender value...we decided on the amount...and low and behold...I got a lot more groceries with 20 silver dollars than I would have with a 20 dollar bill.) So I do still believe in the value of hard currency.
And yes I do take a bite out of my coins.
Now a quarter ounce British Soverign, while having no collector value per se (unless in MS 65 condition) could easily have gotten me up to 200 dollars plus in food and necessities.
Jewelrey as barter I cannot address....I wouldn't know a precious stone if it bit me on the butt. But silver, gold, and platinum jewelry would be bartable by weight at the very least.
Just my 2cents...(copper)
As Chuck pointed out credit cards serve a purpose, but too many Americans have built a lifestyle on them. We use them when we KNOW we can them off within a month. -

Re: Finances
Sun, July 13, 2008 - 2:48 PMIn my opinion the financial expert only gave part truth. As a post SHTF situation precious metals are not worth stocking. But most financial professionals will tell you to put some money in gold and such because it is stable. If I was in Joe's situation I would get a hold of what I can there and bring it home here and try to sell it. If I have spare money to invest gold would not be a bad thing to invest it in. Right now I don’t have the money to invest in precious metals. I am trying to put it into other things such as food and other supplies.
Doc I think you are lucky that the store owner worked a deal with you. I know I would be hard pressed to find some one to work with me like that around here. Most people look at me funny because I use cash and not credit. -

Re: Finances
Sun, July 13, 2008 - 3:11 PMOne of the fastest ways to start "collecting" silver is through the US Mint sales of collectable coins. I started with my kids. Get a silver set each year or every other year. I do it primarily because I'm a collector, but I've sold a few during lean times. Plus it's just a lot of fun.
