Ever feel as though your learning curve has reached a plateau? This workshop is a rousing motivational tool to enhance one’s personal practice. Mira will begin with a thorough breakdown of basic isolations and will gradually increase into multiple layering designed to bewilder the brain and electrify the body. Add spice to your dance, take a step to the next level, this workshop is an asset to any dancer. All levels welcome to the party!
class fee: $50 (by June 30th, $60 after)

Sunday, July 6th- Liz Strong Workshop
TURKISH ROMAN FUSION:
class time: 12:00noon- 2:30pm
The more you know, the more confidently you will express your unique voice. Expand your dance vocabulary, and explore the energizing 9/8 rhythm! Learn the dance in its true
form, and then fuse it to other dance elements. Turkish Rom dance is richly expressive and playful, passionate and fun. Students will dance the pure formto traditional music in 9/8 time signature. Then we will use non-traditional music to create a scintillating, original fusion choreography, drawing on the technique and knowledge of the folkloric form.

Please bring a notebook, and wear yoga pants, a simple hip sash and a comfortable top.
class fee: $50 (by June 30th, $60 after)

*short break from 2:30-3:00pm

Unleashing the inner spaz!!!!
class time: 3:00- 5:30pm
Fancy kicks, tight spins and those elusive concepts to take pops and locks to the next level by mixing the liquid smoothness of a snake with hits and stops that look almost inhuman. This workshop will focus on ways to perform with passionate expression while maintaining control and grace. These concepts will be fully broken down using short combinations as examples so the student is able to get a real understanding of the mechanisms behind them.
class fee: $50 (by June 30th, $60 after)

Zoe Jakes- Zoe is a proud member of the indigo which recently was on the road touring their
show Le Serpent Rouge. She has been touring with Bellydance Superstars since
the fall of 2005 and can be seen performing on their new Tribal Fusions DVD.
Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to create Tribal
Derivations last spring, Zoe discovered she enjoyed creating music, and a new cd will be out may of 2008. When not with the Indigo, she tours with The Yard Dogs Road Show,
a cartoon circus sideshow of wacky dimension, and has been seen tearing it up
with the Extra Action Marching Band.
An innovative dancer, Zoe has been said to have her own unique take on Tribal
bellydance. She takes her influence from Art Nouveau, tango, Breakdance, and
Indian classical dance. Zoe was recently nominated for Zaghareets best
interpretive artist 2007. She loves unicorns and has never once doubted their
existence.

Liz Strong- Elizabeth Strong grew up in a tradition of dance and music. As a young girl she was inspired by the music and dancing of the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Her amazingly emotional and personal style has captivated audiences in the Bay Area and abroad. Elizabeth believes that the heart is the source of dance and that dance is an expression of our relationship with life and culture. A life-long dancer, Elizabeth formally began studying and performing Middle Eastern dance in 1996 at the age of 18.

Active in theater, dance and the performing arts for 20 years, Mira Betz has become a sought after dancer, choreographer, costumer, and teacher. Mira is currently facilitating the Barbary Coast Shakedown, a collaboration of Middle Eastern dance professionals pairing performance with intensive dance instruction.

Jim Boz coming to Beckley, WV!!!

Jim Boz will teach a workshop at the Tamarack on May 10, 2008!!! There will a show during the evening (also at the Tamarack) with dancers from seven states!

The workshop is $65 if paid by April 19, 2008, $70 if paid by April 30th and $75 at the door.

Donations for the American Cancer Association will be welcomed at both the workshop and show. If you give a donation, you will receive a ticket to win a door prize.

Delectably Dark Combinations will show you how to let your inner vamp shine through. You will learn combinations designed to enthrall, intimidate, and stop the hearts of your audience members all without appearing to break a sweat!

Biography:

Taletha began her professional belly dance career in 2004 and has quickly become one of Kentucky ’s most recognized and acclaimed Middle Eastern dance artists.
She earns her living as a solo performer and instructor of belly dance (also known as Raks Sharqi or Oriental Dance) in Louisville , KY. In addition to Egyptian style belly dance, her repertoire also includes Central Asian dance, the folk dances of the Middle East, American Cabaret style belly dance, and Gothic belly dance.
She is a member of the successful Middle Eastern folk and Central Asian dance ensemble, The Crescent Moon Dance Company, as well as co-founder of TL2 Productions, a partnership dedicated to bringing the joy of dance and music to Louisville , KY and Southern Indiana .
More recently, Taletha has become founder and artistic director for Middle Eastern and Experimental dance ensemble, Asrar Al Badra, a group which serves to help provide a creative outlet and performance training for her students. She has also put her experience as a classically trained flautist to work as a member of Ahel El Nagam, a music group devoted to playing Middle Eastern music.
Taletha’s abilities have earned her the opportunity to teach and perform not only in Louisville , but also in Lexington , Cincinnati , Indianapolis , Dayton , Columbus , Denver , Reno , and Seattle . Her performances have reached people from all walks of life. She has performed for major corporate functions, museums, cultural events, and even tattoo conventions. These opportunities have given Taletha recognition locally, and are also beginning to get the attention of people on a national and international level.

MODROM BELLY DANCE
Modrom is short for Modern Romani. The name reflects its true nature: a “gypsy” dance: a dance that absorbs elements from different forms, melding them together into a unique concoction that is completely its own nature. The name also reflects the emotionally charged aspect of the form, where musicality and theatrical delivery are as important as any other component of technique. It is foremost a blend of Egyptian raqs sharqi, Romani, and modern jazz dance. It is also flavored by Indian, Ballet, Spanish, and Turkish dance.

“I look to the Romani people as my inspiration. They incorporated little bits of what they loved from all the cultures they traveled through and then created something completely their own. We may not be Rom, but we can try to dance with as much passion, spirit, and fearlessness as they do. In this genre, we cobble together a completely individual and unique message. We expose our soul and gaze defiantly outward from our place of power. Under the stage lights, we escape our birth and are only what we create.” -Kitiera

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This workshop will begin with technique and drills for Modrom. A short break down of music theory and musicality follows, and the day ends with combinations and choreography. Bring finger cymbals! You may wish to bring a yoga mat for the warm up. Dress to sweat! (yoga/ active wear is recommended) *also recommended to dress in layers that can be paired down as you get warmed up.

KITIERA
Raised in Lexington, KY, Kitiera's 15 year journey with Middle Eastern Dance has led her across the US. She was a popular performer and instructor in Seattle, WA before moving to Berkeley, CA in 2006 to study intensely at the Suhaila Salimpour School of Dance. She is currently certified level II in Suhaila's format, an instructor at the Salimpour studio, and a member of the Suhaila Dance Company and Bal Anat. Anderson Humane here in Lawrenceburg has entirely too many beagles they are needing to get rid of them, they do not want to put them down. Anyone have room in their home for a cute cuddley little beagle..I've posted their bulletin from myspace but the pics won't transfer over, go to myspace and look up Anderson Humane and their they are, cute widdle puppies..

We are running out of room and we'd love to get some of these sweet dogs moved before animal control has to face "the inevitable". Dogs are very sweet, well-behaved, and extremely loyal dogs so please forward this e-mail in hopes of finding a home for them!

This week we got in three beagles and two beagle mixes. Plus, we already had one mix and two purebreds before! So we now have a total of eight beagles at the shelter (with more coming in every day) and we'd love to find them all homes. #37 Sunny: "Hello there. My name is Sunny, and I'm a little bitty beagle mix who just got to the shelter on September 26th. Me and my buddy, Taffy, were hanging around down on Bond Lillard Road for a couple of days and somebody called them to come pick us up. Sure hope my owner comes to get me. They're running out of room!" Thank you to an anonymous donor, who sponsored a portion of Sunny's adoption fee. Now she can go home at a reduced rate!

#80 Betty Jo (Miracle): "Hi. My name is Betty Jo and my story is a miracle in the making. Me and Chip (he's here too) were out running around and a car just came right out of nowhere. We were both hit. He was brought here and I was taken to the vet, where animal control was told I had been euthanized. But guess what? I'm right here. A little worse for the wear, but alive!"

I got here a couple of days before her, but they let us share a kennel when she got here so neither of us would be so lonely. What: What the heck is a sk80s party?..Remember back in the middle school days when your mom dropped you off at Champs to go roller skating and you thought you were cool..well we're doing it again. Come decked out in your finest 80s gear and relive your past!

Where: Champs Rollerdome & Laser Tag

When: Saturday, November 24, 2007 Fun begins at 7pm for laser tag & their new resturaunt. Prime time extended skate ends at 1am.

Why: Because We're taking it back darnit! Those "Emo" kids...they're punkers nothing new, its what we were...fashionable stove pipe jeans...we wore them first..Champs..they can tear it down and rebuild a new one for the new generation..but it was ours first. We're taking back the snack bar, taking back the floor, and if you're super lucky..you just might get to hook up with a floor guard..because that defines you as ultimate cool.

Cost: Prime time extended skate is $12.00, Laser tag is $8 first game, $5 each additional game, each game lasts 20 minutes. Don't forget to rent your speed skates (there's no other way to go, don't get the ugly brown ones) -$5.00

So come on out and help crash the younger generation's big night out and show em' how its done 80's style. Bust out your aquanet, sweater vests..tightroll your jeans, and don't forget the crimping iron and join Travis and I in REVENGE OF THE SK80S!

*disclaimer* any individual who are driving from out of town are more than welcome to crash at our place and finish the drive the next day. I'll make a big ol' breakfast in the morning just like the old days :)

Thriller Time!!

Greetings faithful zombies! Its about that time for the annual Thriller showdown in big LexVegas! Our apologies for the late notice of things, but our planning efforts have been thwarted somewhat by various things. We are in full force now, however, so get your gross things out and get ready to play!

This year, we'll also be participating in the global "Thrill the World" event: www.thrilltheworld.com to break the GWR--a vision we had joked about when we created the event, which has now blossomed into a crazy madness! Very exciting!

I do have a bit of bad news too...we are seeking a Michael and an Ola this year. Our amazing Micah Isaacs, who has played the part of Michael since the creation of this event, is not able to join us this year. It is breaking my heart to do it without him, but If you know anyone interested, let us know.

Okay...the times for the dance rehearsals are:
Saturdays Noon-1p.m. and Mondays 6-7p.m. at Mecca Studio, 451 B Chair Avenue (right off South Broadway).

ManMan at the Dame

Hello lovely ladies!

I was wondering if anyone was planning to go out and see ManMan play the Dame on Saturday night (10/13). They played around here tonight (Southgate House, Newport KY), but I found out too late. I am thinking of coming down on Sat. night if I can get a babysitter. I have been to three or four live shows now and don't want to miss them while they are around. Will I see any of you there if I make it?? Anaya Gypsy is dancing at the Southgate House on Saturday, (that was my plan), but I saw them last weekend and will make ManMan if I can....AG if I can't!! Shimmy on!!!

i apologize profusely for my lack and or slow communication via the airways. my computer has been rebelling against online actions for the past month or so. it's visited the nerd doctor and had new parts and so forth added, but continues to fight with the online.

i am trying to catch up as my computer allows and let everyone know that i have indeed received your registrations for the Indigo Workshops and show next weekend. so if you have not heard word from me, you will.

Rachel, Mardi, Zoe and Tobias will each be teaching 3 hours. That's 12 hours of instruction in two days.

The order of classes will be: Rachel Sat. AM, Tobias Sat. P.M., Zoe Sun. AM, Mardi Sun. PM. Specific times will be provided as soon as Teresa's computer is up again.

$65 per class for early registration (received at least 7 days prior to the event)
$75 per class the week of the workshop or at the door (if space is available)

$200 all four classes early registration (received at least 7 days prior the the event)
$265 all four classes the week of the workshop or at the door (if space available)

Teresa fer hosting such an uberly awesome weekend!!!!!

I know its yer 2rd time having Rachel, but it was my first time out, and happy it was in the new studio! The workshops were amazing (even though i had 2 sit out most of the 2nd day, damn cramps and nausea), and the show was superb! Totally above and beyond and exceeded my expectations!!!

DAY 1- Saturday, March 31st

Introduction to Creating Fusion Choreography:

Choreographies are made up of sections, as are musical pieces. In this workshop, the participant will learn a technique for structuring a choreography, and will be given ideas for thematic development and abstract musical interpretation. Participants will create their own combinations to be used with combinations/sections taught in class.

Day 2- Sunday, April 1st
timeslot: 12-4pm

Combinations for Improvisation and Choreography

Intermediate/Advanced: Students will learn two or three combinations that can be used in improvisational dance or inserted into a choreography. Please wear comfortable stretchy clothes, bring a yoga mat, snacks, water, a notebook and finger cymbals.

Mecca premieres its 1st dance performance in its own space this weekend with Hafla Pura featuring performances by Carolena Nericcio, director of FatChanceBellyDance of San Francisco and Megha director Devyani Dance Company.
This will be Carolena's 2nd trip to Kentucky to teach workshops and perform. Carolena is internationally renowned for her Tribal Pura style of Belly Dance and has mentored many of the biggest innovators in the world of belly dance these days including Rachel Brice and Jill Parker of Ultra Gypsy.

Isolation Technique

Hi guys! I am here for the summer and have 3 more sessions to teach (also will be teaching the basics class this saturday). I think Teresa has been having some problemos with her compy so I will put the description of the class here:

A lifelong dancer, Alyssum Pohl has been under the tutelage of SriTarasita in tribal style bellydance since 1998. Since moving to Massachusetts two years ago, she has honed her own style of tribal bellydance by incorporating her contortion abilities and sharpening her isolations. She is home for the summer and will be teaching an Isolations Technique class--a great class for dancers and non-dancers, beginners and advanced students. In this class, Alyssum will start off with stretching for flexibility, and will spend the majority of the class focusing on a single muscle group at a time (glutes, abs, obliques, back, shoulders...). You will gain a more thorough understanding of the anatomy of your body and how to access your muscles to their full extent.

I have recently started a new job, exciting! But I can’t take vacation days for 6 month, sad! Mira Betz- Mira Betz received her B.F.A. from the California Collage of Arts and
Crafts. Active in theater and the performing arts for 18 years and a
life-long dancer, Mira began her training in Middle Eastern dance in her
early teens. As a founding member, choreographer, and solo performer of
Aywah! Ethnic Dance Company for 10 years, she developed a solid foundation
of contemporary, traditional, as well as ritualistic dance forms.
In spring 2006 she has been in a fruitful collaboration with the talented
Elizabeth Strong, choreographing for Jill Parker and her company Ultra
Gypsy. They are all now launching the "Barbary Coast Shakedown" a touring
seminar coupling performance with intensive dance intruction. Mira has
had the pleasure of performing at such infamous venues as the Hollywood
Bowl in LA, The Fillmore in San Francisco, The Knitting Factory in NYC
and many more. Her dance background includes training in Salsa, Modern,
Jazz, and Flamenco.

The Moroccan Schikhatt is a village dance of the berbers of
Morocco.Emerging out of the seemingly restrictive segregation of society
keeping women and men seperate, this is a dance of celebration, joy, knowlegde and sex
education. In this workshop we will learn big easy movements, rhythm, a
song, and emphasize sisterhood. This dance is about having fun, not being
perfect; letting go and enjoying music. No previous dance experience
necessary, just a willingness to liberate.

2) Saturday afternoon, June 3rd, 3-4:30pm- The Art of Professional Performance

This innovative workshop is open to dancers of all levels and backgrounds.
After hours of preparation in classes, practice in front of the mirror,
and rehearsal you are ready to get out there and perform, or you have been
out there for a while and want to bump up your game. This workshop offers
the tools both practical and theoretical to break into or enhance your
professional appearance and stage presence. It will provide insight into
job seeking, costumery, make-up tips, promotional packages, as well as
explore the illusive notions of stage presence, charisma, handling the
audience and much more. Bring any promotional material you have on
yourself, dance photos, your make-up, comfortable clothes for movement and
an open mind.

relationship with life and culture. A life-long
dancer, Elizabeth formally began studying and
performing Middle Eastern dance in 1996
at the age of 18. Her love for Middle Eastern dance
compelled her to seek the source in North Africa,
Eastern Europe and Turkey. In Istanbul in 2000, she
met Roman ("gypsy") men and women with whom she
studied the Turkish Roman dance form, most notably
Reyhan Tuszuz and Reyhan's daughter, Meltem. She has
recently returned from her third visit abroad wherein
she continued her study of Roman dance, and "Oriental"
or bellydance.

Elizabeth has taught and performed extensively
throughout the West Coast. Her teachers and
inspirations include Katarina Burda, Suhaila
Salimpour, Mira Betz, Rachel Brice, Suzi Tekbilek,
Sahara, Jill Parker, and Jon Compton. Her current
projects include collaberation with top Bay Area
musicians and performers such as Zoe Jakes, Mira Betz,
Rachel Brice and the Indigo, and Jill Parker and Ultra
Gypsy, and the Toids.

Sunday, June 4th, 6-8pm- Turkish Roman ("gypsy") Dance:

All levels welcome. This class will focus on Turkish
Roman dance to the 9/8 rhythm and will include
technique and cultural background. This dance form is
very expressive, intense and fun! Students are
encouraged to wear yoga pants, a plain hip sash, and a
comfortable top.

there is much MUCH going on at Mecca right now. Coming very soon in June we will be hosting the lovely, the talented, the mind blowing, Miss Rachel Brice!! there is space available in the Intensive, so if you're interested, please give us a ring, an e-mail, smoke signal or what have you.

also, we have added some individual workshops to the weekend of June 2-4th by Mira Betz and Liz Strong. Both of these ladies will knock your socks off and are offering some beautiful classes, so don't miss out.

and to all this we add a kickass show the night of June 3rd at The Dame in downtown Lexington!! The show not only features the innovative dance stylings of the afore mentioned ladies: Rachel, Mira and Liz, but includes the stupendous theatrical tribal improvisations of Rakadu Gypsy, african dance by Aminata Baruti, wacky sound and movements by PezHead, amongst the rest of this jampacked Rak Fest!!

(Hafla is open to all dancers from the Intensive who'd like to dance. Please indicate your desire to dance at the Hafla along with your registration. Performances are limited to 5 minutes. Please have your music available on cd. We also plan to have live music for open dancing. )

We are now ready to begin registration for Rachel Brice's Intensive in June. Rachel will be with us for 5 days of intensive yoga and dance drills. Among some of the material that will be covered during the intensive are the following subjects: Introduction to Tribal Fusion Choreography, Constructing a Personal Practice, Yoga for Upper Body Strength and Flexibility, Leading with the Chest, Locks and Isolations, A Practice for Excruciatingly Slow Dancing, and Yoga for Backbends and Floorwork.
Rachel also likes to cater to those dancers attending the workshop and is open to taking requests during the intensive.

A typical day during the intensive would run as follows:
10:00 am -2:30pm Yoga stretch and belly dance conditioning drills followed by:

Focused topic on tribal belly dance technique and/or combinations

Workshop Topics Detail-

Rachel Brice will teach 25 hours of challenging and rigorous tribal belly dance. Participants will learn to develop a daily tribal dance practice, while mastering techniques for stage presence and performance. Prepare to sweat!

Introduction to Tribal Fusion Choreography:
Choreographies are made up of sections, as are musical pieces. In this workshop, the participant will learn a technique for structuring a choreography, and will be given ideas for thematic development and abstract musical interpretation. Participants will create their own combinations to be used with combinations/sections taught in class.

Emphasizing Posture
Assured posture, powerful arms and isolated hip work are three key elements of a strong performance. In this class, we will begin and end with Yoga Asanas that open the chest, strengthen the upper back, create flexibility in the shoulders, and we will work on isolations and posture while practicing drills.

Constructing a Personal Practice
A guide to help dancers construct a personal practice, incorporating drills and stretches to access the muscles used for Bellydance. Principles of alignment and assessing your practice will be discussed. Please bring a new notebook that will become your practice journal.

A Practice for Excruciatingly Slow Dancing
In this workshop we will cover the basics for dancing slowly, including developing consciousness in the muscles required for isolations. The emphasis will be on developing flexibility and stamina. Please bring a notebook.

Leading with the Chest
This fast-paced workshop will include drills for high-energy dancing with a focus on posture.

Yoga for Backbends and Floorwork
Flexibility and strength are required to safely execute the infamous full layback, and these can be acquired by a consisitent, well thought-out practice. Participants will work on their own practice, and later, in pairs to learn how to guide themselves and others into safe floorwork.

For all workshops:

You will need: Comfortable stretchy pants, a form-fitting tank top or sports bra, and a warm tee shirt or sweatshirt. If you wish, bring a hip scarf and skirt for the dance portion of class. Bring water, you may sweat a lot. Handouts will be provided. For specified workshops, you may need a notebook or a Yoga mat, check workshop descriptions for details.

If you would like to prepare for the material to be covered in class, Rachel recommends purchasing and/or borrowing any of the following: Tribal Fusion: Yoga Isolations and Drills, The Fat Chance Series, Suhaila's new series, and Erich Schiffmann/Ali MacGraw's Yoga Mind and Body.

Hotel Information: University Inn, about 1 1/2 miles from Mecca, at $76.50 + tax per room. Whoa!!! Great great fun yesterday late afternoon into late late evening!! The Mardi Gras parade was a BLAST!! More and more people show up each year to be in the parade. One woman said to me it brought tears to her eyes to see so much of LExington get its freak on!!! That's right!! Lexington got its freak on last night, fo sho!! Thanks to the SAmba band as always driving the pulse of the parade. Thanks to the samba dancers who make it all so much more beautiful and colorful!! and thanks to Burnt Sugar and IsWhat who made us all swoon and dance hard the rest of the evening. They were HOTT!! in more ways than 1!!!! so many more ways!!....
