Thank you to everyone who participated in this weekend's Arabesque Belly Dancing Competition! It was the first time Reza put something like this together, and I know it was frustrating at times and long, but he promises that next year everything will be smooth and organized. He's really a nice man and I know that next year will be even bigger and better!
He's not on tribe, so I'll take this time to thank all the workshop instructors, performers, judges, volunteers and contestants for him. Everyone did a great job, and I hope to see all of you again next year!

Report - Poor attendance due to poor advertising. An event like this, unless it's an established, well known event, needs to start being planned and advertised at least a year in advance. The advertising for this competition didn't start until July. Organiziational skills need to be developed, of which there were none. Several instructors were cancelled due to no signups, and another almost cancelled. This was not a good start for a new event.

Thanks for posting Melanie.
I enjoyed working with you at the contest and meeting the other judges. Im pretty new to SD and it was a good chance to meet
people in this part of the state.
As far as the event,
It will only get better as the planning stage will be longer for the next event.
I was really and sincerly impressed with all of the contestants, there was obviously much thought and preparation put into almost evyer performance we saw on stage.
I think the concept of the different catagories is very promising.
Yes, there is room for improvement but its kinda like learning to walk before you can run....sometimes you just have to go thru the stages of things.
Reza is sincere in his wanting to do it much better next year.
Congratulations to the contestants, win or not, your hard work is appreciated.
(yes yes, Laura calls me the Paula Abdul of the belly dance judges because I really want everyone to do well) -

You're great, patrisha! It was fun working with you as well. Hopefully we'll get to do more things like this together!
Next year's event needs to be more organized and promoted better, but you have to keep in mind that the first time someone puts on something that big there are bound to be errors. I'm sure he'll fix things next year. And we all have 1 year to prepare now that we know about it! -
-
The general consensus is for him to skip having one next year, and plan it for 2009. Having another one next year is too soon.
-
-
General consensus? No one asked me! I think 1 year is plenty of time to plan it right. I'm sure it will be a great event next year with more amazing competitors! All of the dancers were really top notch.

They didn't have a reason to ask. It wasn't discussed at the competition. It was discussed after the competition, on and offline at various different places.

Wow, Im on a lot of groups and I didnt hear of a general concensious either.
I would say that the people who are discussing and deciding that they want to wait until 2009 stay home in 2008.
Even the BD of the Year Pagent in Northern Cali has its problems every year and it has been around for 30 years.
Human error is UNAVOIDABLE and no one is perfect.
It wouldnt make sense to do an every two year event. No momentum or interest would be maintained.
I do know that that the promoter of the SD contest kept his word and awarded all prizes which was a large chunk of change by the way, plus is genuinely working on making things better for next year.
Do you have the SD event confused with the Las Vegas fiasco in some respects perhaps?

The general consensus wasn't posted on any of the groups. It was discussed in person by various people at an event. The promoter should attend some other events and talk to those to get tips for his "next" one. The comments came from another person who was "almost" cancelled. This person sa id that all sign ups for the workshops were expected in advance online. But that will never happen anywhere.

Please let me know the date for 2008. I missed it this year because I went on the Arabian Nights at Sea BD cruise. Idon't want to miss it next year!!
-
-
Hey! Seems like everyone was there except me. (on the cruise)
Did you have fun?
David said he felt it was a little confusing as far as the instructors were concerned.
Several of my best friends went on this one this year. -
-
I've been on the cruise five years in a row and I always have an awesome time!! I hung out with David, Angelika and Fahtiem at the drum circle and at the ships "Broadway" show. I do believe it's confusing for first-timers because you have to become acclamated to the ship and then you have to figure out which workshops you want to take.......and then you have to FIND them :) Once you've got the ship layout down, then it's smooth sailing! Another thing is that many of the hot instructor's classes overlapped and having to choose was difficult :(
I think maybe I need to change it up a little and do something different for myself next year. We'll see!!!
