Where to stay and what to do in MEL

I'm an American college student traveling to AUS in a month, and my first destination will be the wonderful city of Melbourne! Im gettin in on June 18th, and will be hanging around for probably a week or more.

Where, or what part of the city, should I stay in? (any hostel recommendations?) and what should I check out while chilling in the Most Livable City of the world?

I'm asking you all cause I gather that this tribe contains some like-minded, interesting, and far out individuals. My kind of people.

As it is, I dont know a single person in the entire CONTINENT of Australia. If anyone is interested in showin' me around, informing me of some gathering or party, or just offering a recommendation for a district to chill in, please feel free to contact me!

    I cant show you around.. but I am sure there will be folks who can help in here..

    There are backpackers in Melbourne - are they the sort of thing you would be interested in ?

    I also have no idea what is on around the 18th .. and pity you are coming in winter...

    Also, bear in mind that "Melbourne" is geographically spread. I would imagine you dont want to end up out in the burbs.. when I said "Melbourne" above - I was talking central Melbourne..
