Hi folks,
I have shop over in Perth [and online] which has been going for almost 5 years, and has been doing well enough and with enough interest from Melburnians that we've bitten the bullet and opened a new store over here. See www.wildilocks.com for full details and lots of gallery pics etc, but I'll give a general run down here:
Wildilocks @ The LockWorks is now Officially OPEN!
Our address is Level 1, 382 Little Collins St, with entrance on McKillop St. You can find us listed on maps.google.com if you type in "Wildilocks Melbourne" if you are not sure where that is.
Nearly all our clothing ranges have arrived, so we have good stock levels of a range of exciting goth/industrial/raver/hippie lines, including some certified organic cotton basics in black for the eco-conscious, and we are also Plastic Bag Free - we do sell some great reusable bags if you come empty-handed - they are also free with sales over $100.
As far as hair stuff goes Our Special Effects hair dye stock is brimming full, as is our KnottyBoy dread stuff stock for dreadlock maintenance! We use only Chi ammonia free permanent colours & lightener in the salon - if you've never used an ammonia free colour or bleach before you're in for a big surprise.
Our Melbourne manager is Kat Martin, who has over 20 years of salon and teaching experience, specialising in colour and colour correction, alternative bridal, and (most excitingly) vintage hairstyles. She also runs Raqs Gothique, Melbourne's Gothic Bellydance school and performance troupe.
Our opening hours are:
Tuesday - 10.00am - 5.00pm
Wednesday - 10.00am - 5.00pm
Thursday - 10.00am - 7.00pm
Friday - 10.00am - 7.00pm
Saturday - 10.00am - 5.00pm
Our phone number in the store is (03) 9642 3384, and the main contact email address for the LockWorks is info@thelockworks.net.
10% discount til the end of the year if you mention Tribe, btw :))
Also, we are looking for one training model for permanent dreadlock installation, and one for dreadlock maintenance in the next week - both services absolutely free, plus one for wool dreadlocks extension installation, where cost is just for materials [under $50]. PM me if interested :)
If you have any questions please ask away!

Re: Wildilocks @ The LockWorks: New alternative hair salon / clothing store in Melbourne CBD - we especially adore dreads :))))
Fri, December 7, 2007 - 7:05 PMso you know Ive been growing my hair for at least 3 years.. since my last visit to a hairdresser which left me so utterly disappointed I shaved it all off and started again... so Im pretty fussy who cuts my hair, I even went to what I thought would be a cool place in Northcote coz they do dreads and stuff but the guy I ended up with (and I know they have other great cutters.. post horror) just wanted to cut my hair like friggin Jennifer Anniston.. so any hoo.. I see this add for LockWorks so I pops in for a visit and who should be the manager but someone I used to Bellydance with, so feelin good so far, and start to chat with Nicole their cutter and she's gettin my abstract descriptions of what I think I want. So me makes an appointment for last night and I go for it. My long locks on the floor.... but not all of them, i asked for long and short and pixie and assymetrical.. and that is exactly what I got. Its the best haircut I have ever got I cant recommend LockWorks and Nicole highly enough. Yey! I love my new me! -

Wed, December 26, 2007 - 5:04 AMHey Magpi,
You'd be looking at somewhere around $200-$300, depending how thick you want them to be - very thick dreads > hair not too thick on the lower end of that spectrum, thinner dreads > thicker hair = higher end.
And yes we use noooo chemicals on the dreads, just elbow grease! Chemical dreads are bad, I've seen some really bad dreads that were done that way.
We use Knottyboy maintenance products which are full of organic hemp oil and lots of essential oils, but even they aren't necessary, mainly just make things neater and smell nice and stuff :)

Wed, December 26, 2007 - 6:39 PMno sorry didnt realise! Its funny, talk to people online but meet them in the flesh and sometimes you wouldnt know who they were. Its that whole mysterious avatar thing. Yes next time! My hair does look ace but i dont know how long it will last. Im craving getting rid of it all. I want to get rid of the henna and go back to my natural color. So its going to be the big chop! -

cass I'm looking at thick ones
my last lot were thing and they didn't form as easy and started to get thiner as they got older
looking at closer to 1 inch diameter per dread
i use tea tree oil shampoo and stuff like that on my hair
my last lot of dreads were just back combed and then waxed for the first month then i just left them alone sept to wash them every couple of days (prob a bit to much and needed some better shampoo at the time)

Re: Wildilocks @ The LockWorks: New alternative hair salon / clothing store in Melbourne CBD - we especially adore dreads :))))
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 5:13 AMhey magpi - one inch diameter is reeeaally thick! Unless you have super super super thick hair i prob wouldnt recommend quite that thick - most people would only get a half a dozen dreads on their head!
and alas I have no plans to visit sydney any time soon... are you coming down for Rainbow Serpent?? We are having a stall there, so if you are I could maybe catch up with ya there!!
