your greatest treasure

. . belly dance treasure that is.
I wanted to inquire of the fellas: what is your favorite costuming treasure? maybe a necklace you found at a thrift store? is it a tribal-esque belt you found at the GAP? a great vest you stole from a bellydancin' girlfriend. I'd love to see pictures!!

I'm taking a guess here, but I think my husband's greatest treasure is a pair of handmade leather Aladdin-type shoes he found while thrift shopping. (I'll post a pic as soon as I recharge these batteries.) They fit him wonderfully and they are the perfect finishing touch to his outfit. He drums & dances and these shoes slip on and off easily, too. He LOVES them.

I ask about your treasures because I'm looking for ideas for my husband. He's only been dancing for a short while, but he's really working hard. I want to find a great gift to encourage him. Any suggestions?
And I'm curious about guys' thoughts - what makes a piece perfect for bellydancing in your opinion?

Well.... I guess I'd have to say its my harem pants - They're black crushed satin that I made while wanting to throw the sewing machine against the wall. They're comfy and cool and VERY baggy, probably too baggy. They will always be my fave.

I would suggest something for the other end of his body, maybe a turban or cool beduin wrapy thingy.

Harem Pants can never be too baggy. I love mine that I make out of black satin (and dark sage green ones & burnt orange ones) & that use 4 yards of fabric. (Yep, 2 yards per leg - they are fabulous!)

Yes, my pants are 4 yards as well. Pants can never be too baggy! But I have so many favorite things about my costume that I have a hard time deciding. For example, my turban. Sure its just pieces of scrap fabric I wind around my head, but I love the way it looks! I also really like my tassel belt, having alot of tassels helped me to get over not seeing my movements because I don't have hips like a woman! Then there are my bracelets. A friend gave them to my wife and I, and after ALOT of friendly bickering with her, I have made off with them for my own! :) My logic was simple, she has been dancing for years, I have not. Therefore she has alot of stuff, I don't! (Besides they look better on me anyway!) :D

I'll try to remember to take a picture of them for you.

Mmmm headwraps, I love them, what better place than to adorn my head with my treasures. The tassel belt I am currently dancing in is my favotite I made it from some old fabric bought at a festival, adorn it with Turkomen buttons. coins, dome old dangly chanin I bought froma vendor off ebay and then I have some antique bead tassels as well as antique silk tassels on it. I made a large round Kuchi pendant into a buckle for the front to hold it closed. (I love 2 part epoxy glue!) My costume is very tribal (see my Rakkasah pics in my profile) and I just love the belt. I made a bra to match & they are my latest favorite treasures. Lots of tassels help, there are many young sllim female dancers that have the same issues of slender hips (not me, I have hips & love every inch of them!) I love that you took your wifes jewelry. After all, if your married it is community property!
