El Nino turned me onto Thai Fisherman pants which are loose and comfy and fairly easy to make. I found this pattern on-line. There is a second pattern for Comfy pants as well. They are fairly cheap to buy if that's your option.

Re: Thai fisherman pants pattern/
Sun, October 15, 2006 - 1:12 PMI confirm the comy feeling... I bought some in Tel Aviv from $5 a pair - needless to say the quality isn't top notch, but it gave me some ideas.
The pattern you found, Miyong, corresponds to the cut I have.
However, I really dig the ones shown in the first photo, but I suspect they are of a different cut (looks more flary at the legs, whereas mine are straight), unless there's a major secret twist in the tying of the belt that I haven't figured out.
Anyone knows a thai fisherman to ask for advice ? ;-)
Also I think it would be cool to make then of a somewhat thick cotton so that their own weight gives them a little intertia when you move. Mine are very very thin (cf $5), which is great in summer but they are prone to ripping and don't behave properly on a dancefloor... -

Sun, October 15, 2006 - 1:24 PMYeah, that's my question...how do these look on the dance floor?

Re: Thai fisherman pants pattern/
Sun, October 15, 2006 - 2:37 PMThey could be flared or just a boxier cut, wider overall, so they look more flary.
I think using Linen or Hemp-like fabric would make it drape better, as well as hang better and I think they would look rather hot dancing. eeesh, so many different styles to work on. -

Re: Thai fisherman pants pattern/
Mon, October 16, 2006 - 11:12 AMYup : I vote for hemp , for wearing and, err, scenting your room with... and for flary pants ***as long as the ass looks cute***.
That's my philosophy of men's playawear. Any objections ?
No. Good. -

Re: Thai fisherman pants pattern/
Sat, January 6, 2007 - 3:17 PMI just received a pair of Thia fishermen's pants that I picked up off of eBay.(from Thialand) The pattern is totally different that the one shown here. It's just two panels with a cut out u-shape in the middle, ties front and back and the outside of the legs are open. Other than hems it only has one quick sew job of the U section. I think I am going to make a handful of these for Burning Man.

Tue, July 29, 2008 - 11:15 AMWhat Xak has are drive in pants. I have a few pair, and they are awesome! Great for the playa, as they're really breezy and open. I'd love to see a pattern for these. They look to be a square or rectangle, with a notch for the crotch. -

Re: Thai fisherman pants pattern/
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 5:21 PMI'm going to give this pattern a try but as a beginner seamster, I'm a bit confused on the crotch part. The pattern doesn't say how wide to make the U cut only the depth (1/2 your crotch measurement). Or am I missing something? -

Re: Thai fisherman pants pattern/
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 8:12 AMgentle curve is all they say. basically, you want to mimic the area you measure, but a general gentle curve will suffice - so make the width of this curve approximately as wide as you are from front to back - IF you could measure directly through your body. -

Re: Thai fisherman pants pattern/
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 8:46 AMthe curve goes around your front to back crotch...add some seam allowance, like 1" extra front and 1" back. more if you want it looser. you don't want it really smack on your crotch. ;-)
it's very easy to do....

Re: Thai fisherman pants pattern/
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 3:08 PMI've never heard them called "drive-in pants", but instead "wrap pants". They're super easy to make, and look great on everyone (unlike the thai fisherman pants, which I've never actually seen look GOOD on anyone....but that's an opinion for another tribe I guess).
I'm actually making a pair right now, as I ran across this topic...funny. :-) You can crank out a pair in about an hour, maybe a bit more if you're not a demon on the sewing machine. -

Tue, July 29, 2008 - 5:21 PMThanks for the pattern. I'm making a pair right now, too! Off-white raw silk! Gonna make a matching tunic. Ah sew!

Thai fisherman pants pattern
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 10:36 PMThe pattern should say, "One Size Fits Most." I'm 6'1" tall with a 30" (Levi's, 34" actual) waist. The legs would've been a little snug, as measured in the pattern above, and way too short. So I added two inches the width and length. For a trial pair I made a them with $1.50/yd. (on sale) muslin. Now I'm going to make a few pairs with a better fabric. -

Wed, June 24, 2009 - 10:45 AMSmart idea to do a trial run in cheapie fabric.. I didn't look at the pattern.. must be for a small woman, because wrap pants are usually pretty generous..
