hi!
so i've got a fairly definite vision of what i want in a playa coat but am new to crafting so don't think i could realize it without a pattern!
what i want is a short coat, short enough that it doesn't cover my ass at all (hehe), and a hood and pockets with a lining. i want to have long pile fur on the outside and a brocade lining. or possibly a super high dramatic stiff collar instead of the hood. i'm guessing there wont' be a pattern that will incorporate that. maybe i can figure out how to do it by myself though. the challenge would be to get it to be really high and stiff.
does anyone know of such a pattern? or any suggestions in general? i went to jo-ann fabrics and tried to look for coat patterns but was totally overwhelmed by drawers and drawers with thousands of patterns most of which were cheesy blouses organized by nothing other than a serial number according to no apparent pattern!
help!

this one looks fairly easy. skip the zipper part, too difficult for a newbie. linings take a lot of work and if you don't sew then...you'll need help.
pattern books have numbers on each style. then go to the bins and match the umber t the pattern company. make sure the size is right for you. check in the back.

Re: pattern for a short coat
Wed, May 30, 2007 - 6:59 PMok yeah that looks pretty good. i definitely want to do hooks or big buttons instead of a zipper. i want the hood to be fuller than that but maybe i can alter it. and i guess it wouldn't be hard to make it a little big shorter than that. i want it to be pretty short. not super short but just above my ass, which i doubt that pattern would be.
i'm taking a 3 hour introduction to sewing class this weekend. after that i'll just practice with some sleeves or leg warmers or whatever until i feel ready to attempt the coat. i definitely want to have a lining. -

Re: pattern for a short coat
Thu, May 31, 2007 - 8:00 AMokay, then I seriously recommend you skip the lining this time around. I hate putting linings in. my coats take me an average of 12 hours min.
you need to learn the basics first. seriously. try and make something simplier first, then come July or August ....start your coat then.
Try a vest first.
I've been sewing for 30+ years so this is the most serious of advices I can offer. -

Re: pattern for a short coat
Thu, May 31, 2007 - 8:03 AMa vest is a good idea. maybe a vest with lining would be a good start?
i can't stand the idea of wearing fur with no lining, ick! -

Re: pattern for a short coat
Thu, May 31, 2007 - 8:35 AMhere's the easiest way to do a lined vest. cut pieces of fur and lining. sew side seams, and shoulders for each fabric.
then stick the lining inside the fur vest.
you'll have the edges meeting.
get 3" twill tape or some binding tape. Iron it is 1/2
slip both fabrics inside the folded tape, pin well
then sew it.
that's it
add buttons, snaps, whatever.
Matt: there are many, many helpful sewing sites online if you get confused and need help.........or just ask mio.
good luck with this mission
this post will self destruct in 10 seconds. :-) -

Thu, May 31, 2007 - 9:53 AMthanks so much miyo! you're a rockstar!
i'll probably take some random classes afterwards. stitch lounge is very burnery and they do private lessons for 40 bucks too so i could go in and ask for help with lining and fur specifically. -

Wed, April 9, 2008 - 8:55 PMI agree with Matthew. I want you to not give up on Burning Man. :) That is, if your health has been getting better and allows for it. Harsh elements... like landing on friggin' Mars!
I did want to take the opportunity to thank you for posting such great stuff. After combing through the threads on this tribe, the pertinence of your questions and sound advice on fabulous playawear for us guys is duuuuly appreciated!
I was pondering this... I have seen an abundance of sexy women on the playa, in outfits that are simultaneously simple and stunning. Playa fashion for the guys, on the other hand? Not quite so easily defineable for me as sexy... why should we miss out? And no... I am not betraying my sex here... I just think we could use a little fine-tuning on our look - to add to the aesthetic beauty that IS Burning Man. Sorry to come off snobby, honest! -

Re: pattern for a short coat
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 1:37 PMLOL, thanks. I made it to BM but last year sucked and this year isn't going so well with my health, so I'm still in my community but mostly out of sight. I decided not to teach sewing nor really make clothing for anyone this year, just 1 client. I am also trying to set up my other tribes with my extra time.
we have some fabulous designers here like Pani to help with any questions to help you guys get ready for the burn.
