Re: what are you planning for '08
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 2:30 PMThanks you guys! :)
Yeah we got a surger for Christmas so I am going to be learning how to use it. I'm sure I will get allot of help from my wife and mother in-law.(I usually do with my costumes) Although I definitely want to be able to do it myself.
Other than what needs sewing I have gotten started on in some way. Like the goggles and shoulder, light piece, harness thingy. Currently juggling projects between shade structure, art bike, wagon and costumery. :P Only 4 more months to get all of it done. Ahhhhh -

Fri, April 25, 2008 - 2:44 PM4 months flies!
Great you have def designs going.
a Serger is wonderful and makes sewing much easier sometimes, esp for stretch fabrics.
one way I approach playawear season is to write down a list of items that need to be completed;
design
fabric buy
trims
as you finish each item, check off. I kept mine on my blog to remind me. Designs changed, add/delete but it kept my mind fresh.
also having sewing workshops in small groups is very helpful and motivating.
Keep it simple! .....man I could NEVER follow that one. ;-)
since I am not going this year, I'll try to get some more posts coming up with simple, easy ideas in the following months.
awesome!

Re: what are you planning for '08
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 11:05 AMi'm planning on making outfits from reclaimed fabrics and leftovers from past projects that i'll be putting up for sale for anyone needing fun clothes for the playa (and beyond).
the first piece i'm making is a shimmering, cozy hoodie, which uses the reclaimed red holographic fabric from last year's art car (only lightly used) and minky fabric leftover from the bear onezie i complete a few months back. (it's a men's large)

Re: what are you planning for '08
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 10:45 AMi just finished the red holographic & minky fur hoodie and put it up for sale on my etsy site. (yay!)
there are pics and a full description on my blog page.
it turned out really fun. the spandex is very soft and slinky-feeling. makes me want to make something for myself out of that fabric now!
i was finally able to sew the spandex fabric without trouble ... i switched to a Stretch Fabric needle. that made all the difference. using a regular needle the sewing machine was skipping stitches (like 1 out of every 10 actually worked). with the new needle it sewed with no problems. lesson learned. -

Fri, June 6, 2008 - 10:59 AMi posted a listing for the hoodie, but forgot to put it on this tribe (d'oh!) ... here's a link and please forgive my spam. ;)
it's a men's M-L size, so i thought someone here might be interested.

Re: what are you planning for '08
Fri, August 1, 2008 - 6:27 AMI have an aversion to sewing machines, but have decided to learn to use our serger and create some very simple clothing.
My design is basically a configurable loincloth with replaceable panels, all rectangular and therefore simple to serge.
The basis is a simple belt, covered with the nappy side of velcro (with a patch of fuzzy velcro underneath on one side to fasten it). It'll be about 1-1/2" inches wide and I'll make it out of comfy, probably black, material.
Then I'll make small front panels, in the neighborhood of 10"x10" or however daring I'm feeling with the fabrics I've chosen (mostly animal print this year). They will have a strip of fuzzy velcro on the top back side to attach to the front of the belt.
I could also make back panels, and then two corresponding side panels, but since I plan on being mostly bare-assed this year, I'll skip the rear panels and use one "side panel" to cover the rest of the basic belt.
Along with the loincloths, I hope to make simple matching shoulder covers, sort of like those Egyptian collars, except mine will be rectangular so I can serge the main piece. I'll need to have someone finish the neck hole for me, but I have many talented seamstresses in my life. :-)
One great thing about this is I can make a complete outfit out of a yard or less of material. Hello, JoAnn clearance bins! ...
