Does anyone know the best approach to attaching el-wire to clothes? I want a pattern to come through from under a shirt. I was thinking of putting the pattern on a separate piece of fabric and then sewing that into the shirt but I don't know how to get the el-wire on.
Any strategies?

Re: el-wire and clothing
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 1:29 PMI haven't actually tried either, but:
coolneon.com sells something called "tail wire" that comes with a plastic tab running the length of the wire that's maybe 3/4" wide that you can sew through. It's not significantly more expensive than regular EL wire.
Also, you can get a foot for a sewing machine that's for piping which has a notch the piping goes through and sews a stitch back and forth across it. Those allegedly work. I will know more in a month after I try these things. -

Re: el-wire and clothing
Tue, March 25, 2008 - 10:34 PMThere are two good ways to attach EL to cloth. One is sewing it with fishing line. It is clear and holds the EL really well. The other is using a device called a Buttoneer which puts a clear U shaped staple through the cloth. Both of these methods will keep the EL close to the fav=bric so it will be bright coming through the cloth. -

Wed, March 26, 2008 - 6:31 AMI could do the fishing line thing. I just suck at hand sewing. Tell me more about this Buttoneer.
I ended up duct taping the el-wire to the inside of my shirt. It worked as a temporary thing for the night but now I have sticky el-wire. -

Wed, March 26, 2008 - 9:47 AMyou can find the buttoneer at some sewing fabric shops, drugstores and online. They are easy to use, but get refills! as they don't always work...depending on the fabric you are attaching to.
I personally don't like them as I waste so many of them and I much prefer sewing it on with just white thread or they do sell invisible sewing thread too that's a bit stretchy.

Re: el-wire and clothing
Thu, March 27, 2008 - 9:19 AMIf your cloth is synthetic (i.e. non-porous), superglue works very well. Use a drop about every inch and apply. This is MUCH quicker than sewing, needless to say, but may require some maintenence over time.
