Hi, I'm new to the tribe and really excited to have found you.
I'm fairly new to sewing cloths; got my machine to sew flags for my camp initially.
I'm making a pair of pants (to match my hoop) and could use some advise.
I used a basic string pants pattern and they came out pretty good but now they need to be tailored.
I used a stretchy fabric. So where do I begin tailoring? Is is best to start fitting the legs, crotch, or waist?
Any tips? Thanks all. --s--

Re: Need advise on tailoring pants
Tue, July 1, 2008 - 3:48 PMwell, it's always best to fit the pattern before you sew it together ... that said, i would suggest taking them in from the side seams.
put the pants on inside out, and use a few pins down the sides, taking them in till they feel comfortable, but allows for movement. then (carefully) take the pants off and measure how much you took in on both sides so you know how much to take in (evenly) from each side. Un pin, lay pants flat, measure in from the side seams, and sew. Its a good idea to try them on again before you cut off the extra fabric, just in case you made them too tight.
hope that helps. -

Tue, July 1, 2008 - 11:17 PMThanks *pani* for the advise. I don't knw how to fit, or what you mean by fitting, a pattern before sewing it together. I'm a complete novice when it comes to sewing. But I'll take your advice about starting with the side seam. Thanks for your help. --s-- -

Re: Need advise on tailoring pants
Wed, July 2, 2008 - 4:05 AMone of the best ways is to copy a pair of yoga long pants as it's a stretchy knit fabric.
you can ask to borrow someone's pair.
on a large sheet of paper
fold yoga pants in half.
the front pant leg will be slightly narrower than the back leg.
place front pant leg on sheet and copy.
do same for back.
the back crotch seam should have a deeper arch than the front crotch.
add seam allowances on each seam line 5/8".
if you are bigger than the pattern, add more inches on the sides of the leg seam, outside seam, Not inner leg seam.
cut 2 fronts and 2 backs.
if you don't have a stretch stitch on your machine. use a narrow zig-zag stitch
a straight stitch will break if you stretch the pants while wearing it, esp on the crotch seam.

Wed, July 2, 2008 - 8:29 AMWonderful, thanks. I'll have to check if my machine has a stretch stich. Never thought to check that. Duhhhh.
