What inspires you?

sorry folks for being absent for so long. I am going through so serious health issues. Doctors, tests and meds. Enough to keep me tired and not very active, but I will try and be more active.

This is a conversation I'd like to start.
I want to know why, how, what and where you get inspired.
To me it's more than just wearing clothing/costumes.
Anyone can wear anything, but does it really represent your self expression?

I have a motto:
It is not what you wear that defines you
It is you that defines what you wear.

So what defines you?
What inspires you?
Where do you get inspired?
and why?

Burners as in every tribe, social class, cliques, and cultures have a similar look to them.
Even counter cultures.
But is that who you are?
Self expression is not wearing what everyone else around you is wearing,
Do you think the clothing and/or costumes really defines you as a person/persona?

It's something I have been thinking about for some time now.
I think many people don't really know, thus the confusion when a lot of us are looking for something to wear.

My whole life's ideas of what I wear defining me has eluded me.
Even with a background in fashion and costuming.
I was too busy trying to find me to know the answer.
Until I realized I had to know who I was first.

But that is me. Not everyone fits into this mold.
When describing Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's;
He says; "She a phony, but she's a real phony."
From my perspective what her character wears in the film
doesn't define who she is.
What she wears is a costume that disguises her true identity.
because she's a phony, but a real phony.

And that is one way of dressing.
Just not mine.

So let the conversations begin.
Men and women
These are questions for all.
I want to know who you are because it will define what you wear.
This is true self-expression.

I'd never really thought about it before, but I guess what I wear does define me, or vice versa.
In the default world, my clothing is comfortable and functional and generally pretty dark, and that describes me fairly accurately. If I could afford it, I'd probably wear nothing but $1800 Armani suits with a Gold Rolex, and I guess that says something about my appreciation for the finer things in life, for it wouldn't be about showing off how much money I had, it's just that I have the simplest of tastes, I only want the best!

On the Playa, I like costumes and brightly colored things, which has to do with the artistic side of me and costumes allow you to bring out a side of you that doesn't normally see the light of day. What inspires me is seeing an outfit that's completely unique and unlike anything else around, at least that's what inspires me from a fashion standpoint. In life? Well the sea and the rain, people doing good things for no reason, great literature, and real love, to name a few.

    I wear alot of black.

I've been thinking about that lately. People who wear black all the time are readily categorized as "gothy" sorts or artists of some kind. I do deeply appreciate the goth aesthetic, as well as many forms of art. Creation is important to me, and I revel in the process of bringing something from concept to reality. And I wear black. So, it's a funny thing; as much as I don't want to be judged by what I wear, I can't say that someone would be wrong if they made such an assumption about me. Black just feels comfortable... serene. If quiet were a color, it would be black for me. In the absence of visual noise, my mind feels more at ease.

Now, I might be getting at something... who I am, or at least who I strive to be, is someone grounded, calm and centered (strive!). And black is what follows, for me. Perhaps that would be a different color for someone else. Blue? Purple, perhaps?

I like simple lines. I don't like to wear anything flashy or extravagant. Again, it just seems more visually "quiet" and calm.

I'm really excited because for this year's Burn, I plan to be sporting fur. My girlfriend will, too, but while she is checking out the multi-colored fur, I'm drooling over long pile in white, or in a white/beige combo, as a compliment to the desert palette. Not black... but still very simple. True, black would just be a miserable color during the day in Black Rock City, but the desire to calm and ground myself isn't really prevalent there. Perhaps the dark and light colors I wear are an outward expression of my tendency toward introversion and extraversion? In a normal day, I suppose I am more concerned with conserving, building, and strategically directing my energies - and am most comfortable in black. On the playa, my energy feeds into the collective, and I feel myself a part of that all-encompassing love which connects me to everyone else out there - and am probably just as comfortable in any color as I am naked. :)

i love white on the playa.
I had white fake fur coats, wore a polar fleece dress in ivory in the White Procession.
I like to blend in with nature, esp in a desert.

I used to wear a lot of black when I was younger, it was easy and still is but I gradually grew bored with it, so I now wear more earth tones, rich colors. Ive never been into bright colors much, but usually if I do it's bold reds, oranges, greens.

It took Burning Man for me to realize how much I hate to dress in costume. :-)
I prefer high fashion or wearable art on playa. It's the perfect backdrop for it.
