Hi. Just wanted to share pictures of my first and only costume I have ever made. Sorry but I only have pics up on myspace:

www.myspace.com/uwannafuck

This came about because I wanted to save money and make my own giant disco ball. The first problem I had was cutting bathroom mirrors into small squares. They were too thick and even if they were thin it would be too hard to cut into small pieces. So I searched ebay and found a vendor that sells handmade individual mirror pieces. I bought a few 100 piece bags.

After failing to make a disco ball (you would be surprised how hard it is to make one) i was left with a bunch of mirrors. So as a last minute costume idea for a regional burn, I glued them to a mechanics jump suit and to an old fashioned hat. I used super glue/krazy glue. I drank one can of monster energy drink and did the project start to finish in 12 hours straight with a few breaks.

After wearing it at 3 events I have lost 5 mirrors total. And each one I was able to recover the moment they came off. The reason is because you really have to pluck hard to remove any of the pieces, and when it has happened i can feel it and know it has happened. I tried to remove a piece one time and I couldn't even remove it if I wanted to, so the glue definitely really works well.

There are two drawbacks: the suit is kinda heavy and I can't sit on any hard surfaces (well, i probably could but I don't want to find out what happens).

Eventually I plan on filling it in completely with mirrors instead of an every other checkerboard pattern. I haven't worn it during the day yet, i think it might blind people, but at night i get a lot of attention, walking around I get a lot of burners shining their headlamps and flashlights on me and it creates a really nice lightshow on the ground around me.

There are others around it.

The Blue Alien was so much fun to rock out at Deep End!! Although it was almost solely an audible experience, as through my tiny eye holes I could see enough to navigate, but that was about it. If anyone has any other pics, or especially video from Deep End, I would be forever greatful!!
Thanks for taking a look!
Coco Chanel once said “Fashion is not something that exists only in dresses. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

At the end of its journey clothing and fabric scrap takes up a huge amount of landfill. Add to that the environmental costs of packaging, transport, color dying, printing, and laundry and it creates a dangerous and enormous carbon footprint. This is the reason fashion designed with recycled materials comes as a welcome new fashion trend. There are countless ways to reduce your fashion carbon footprint and rebuild the economy. The choice is ours to support local designers and in turn save the planet and create jobs.

“Several studies have shown that buying from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community and creating jobs. Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution. Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our communities, provide the most jobs to residents.“ Source: sconnect.org
RecycledForDancing.com designs by Deborah Paulino are collectable works of art that show the nature of transformation, and draw attention to the human connection to one another and the environment. Combined are an array of fabrics from different eras and areas of the world that are either surplus, recycled or vintage.

The reconstruction process starts with hand washing the fabrics in oxygen bleach, then looking at the fabric, shape, color, then sketching out a design. Often several pieces are used to make one piece of clothing and it can take time, sometimes weeks searching through thrift shops, to find the right elements that compliment each other. Once all the elements are in place the construction takes place, then fittings and finishing touches - sometimes tailoring alterations, other times embellishments such as beading, appliqué, or distressing. When the garment is finished and ready for retail, it is then steam cleaned for any leftover dust and allergens and de-wrinkle and refresh the fabric. The results are one of a kind sincere works of art that are well-made, timeless, and fun to wear.
2 Cut its head off, at the neck. Including a little more of chest/head transition makes good chin tie.
3 cutting out the snout and eyes makes the face hole. Cutting close around edge of eyes makes a V shaped "dracula" look.
4 glue gun or sew rolled edges. Customize ears with light wire for bendable expressiveness.
5 the hind and two lower legs can make an interesting hat with a little button tail on your forehead. Just cut at the belly line.
Play with it, do a few, get creative with customization. Pick a few that are smaller, give them to kids you know, they love them. Also if you attach a light bennie or baseball hat with brim removed,on the inside, it can be more comfortable.
I have also skinned an entire mid sized toy tiger and worn the head as a hat with the pelt going down my back. Very shamanic looking.

I use either a ball point or stretch needle when I sew with my machine.
If you don't have a stretch stitch on your machine, use a tighter stitch length but wider(bigger) zig-zag stitch.

I tend to use my serger for most of my spandex fabrics when stitching seams.
Sergers are an investment worth considering if you sew a great deal esp spandex or any other stretch fabrics.
I would not use it for sewing fake fur though. I tried and really screwed up my serger, as the fur gets caught in the needles as well as it being too thick if using a dense fur.

I always used a zig-zag stitch when sewing fake fur.

Stretch fabrics are forgiving, meaning you can hide mistakes better than woven(non-stretch) fabrics.

I use a 100% high quality polyester thread but if you really need for the machine not to break threads on durable garments or say shade structures, I recommend Wooly brand thread.
Wooly thread is a nylon thread that is fuzzy because it is contains many strands of threads. To thread through needles, simply wax the ends of the thread using wax. Beeswax is used most often, but you can substitute it with any candle wax.

any other tips?

So I was at the fabric store the other day and the clearance bin had some good stuff. I got this piece of fabric, about 2 yards I believe, and I am trying to figure out what to do with it. It looks like a really short cow hide (fur) but all charcoal grey, with patches that go against the grain. It isn't as thick as cowhide, but more like a thick flannel. It's really sleek and beautiful. I have been doing very synthetic outfits lately and would like to have a more "of the earth" quality to it. I just am not sure.

My thoughts so far go towards a well tailored vest, or maybe even into something of a kilt, but NOT if it's gonna look like a utilikilt. No offense just not my look. And to be perfectly honest, I can't see a kilt not making my hips look wider than they are. Yes, guys worry about this as well, well, at least this guy. I got my mom's birthin hips.

So, any suggestions?

hey all, I'm gonna talk about Zentai suits.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zentai

It's basically a bodysuit that covers your entire body
I've made zentai suits for men using a pattern I made. I make a seperate hood and gloves.I also put a zipper in the front because it was more convenient for my client, esp when he had to use the restroom. ;-)

For the hood and gloves I used a simple pattern I just posted on this tribe.

I'm putting a bunch of links about bodysuits and some patterns I found. Some are womens but you can alter the pattern to make it fit you as it's basically the same.

If you are a taller/bigger size, you need to widen and lengthen the areas of your pattern where it's needed. Most patterns have a line where you an increase/decrease the length of the pattern piece.
If you need to widen it, you'll do it at the side seams, just add inches as needed. You'll also need to add some to the shoulder seam and sleeve area and your sleeves.
It's best to take a look at an actual pattern that has a few sizes already. It's usually one pattern with each size cutting lines, increasing for bigger sizes.

I know it sounds a bit complicated and it can be for a novice sewer, but it's all a matter of trail and error.

You'll need a good 4 way stretch fabric and either a serger or use zig-zag stitch o your machine or if your machine has a stretch stitch already.

take a look at the links and ask any questions you have.
Basically you put on some thin, tighter fit clothing that you don't mind destroying. You then have a friend that owes you a favor start covering you in duct tape from head to foot. Well, we went foot to head. Then after you are all taped up, your friend then very carefully cuts you out of it. I let mine dry out over night as the clothing underneath was soaked. Then tape the cuts back together and fill with stuffing.
-be sure that EVERY part of you is covered with clothing. especially that very sensitive skin on the underside of your upper arm. BELIEVE ME ON THIS ONE! :)
-take your time, especially when taping back together and stuffing. make sure that the places you are stuffing look right before you get too far up the body and can't go back.

and then once you're are all taped up, make sure and do a photoshoot in a matching freight elevator:
so i've got a fairly definite vision of what i want in a playa coat but am new to crafting so don't think i could realize it without a pattern!

what i want is a short coat, short enough that it doesn't cover my ass at all (hehe), and a hood and pockets with a lining. i want to have long pile fur on the outside and a brocade lining. or possibly a super high dramatic stiff collar instead of the hood. i'm guessing there wont' be a pattern that will incorporate that. maybe i can figure out how to do it by myself though. the challenge would be to get it to be really high and stiff.

does anyone know of such a pattern? or any suggestions in general? i went to jo-ann fabrics and tried to look for coat patterns but was totally overwhelmed by drawers and drawers with thousands of patterns most of which were cheesy blouses organized by nothing other than a serial number according to no apparent pattern!

sorry folks for being absent for so long. I am going through so serious health issues. Doctors, tests and meds. Enough to keep me tired and not very active, but I will try and be more active.

This is a conversation I'd like to start.
I want to know why, how, what and where you get inspired.
To me it's more than just wearing clothing/costumes.
Anyone can wear anything, but does it really represent your self expression?

I have a motto:
It is not what you wear that defines you
It is you that defines what you wear.

So what defines you?
What inspires you?
Where do you get inspired?
and why?

Burners as in every tribe, social class, cliques, and cultures have a similar look to them.
Even counter cultures.
But is that who you are?
Self expression is not wearing what everyone else around you is wearing,
Do you think the clothing and/or costumes really defines you as a person/persona?

It's something I have been thinking about for some time now.
I think many people don't really know, thus the confusion when a lot of us are looking for something to wear.

My whole life's ideas of what I wear defining me has eluded me.
Even with a background in fashion and costuming.
I was too busy trying to find me to know the answer.
Until I realized I had to know who I was first.

But that is me. Not everyone fits into this mold.
When describing Holly Golightly  in Breakfast at Tiffany's;
He says; "She a phony, but she's a real phony."
From my perspective what her character wears in the film
doesn't define who she is.
What she wears is a costume that disguises her true identity.
because she's a phony, but a real phony.

And that is one way of dressing.
Just not mine.

So let the conversations begin.
Men and women
These are questions for all.
I want to know who you are because it will define what you wear.
This is true self-expression.

If the fur becomes too bulky at the seams, trim off the seam allowance(fur) using clippers BEFORE you sew. This will make sewing much easier.

Get a Teflon foot. It has a plastic flat foot which allows for easier sewing.
See, I've recently entered into the makeup effects industry, which is giving me a whole slew of skills. Basically, unless it has complicated moving parts, I can make it. Kinda like the T-1000. Well, not really, but yeah.

Anyways, I found a pair of goggles whose frame fit over my glasses, and I happened to have a plaster mold of my head. Assuming the link I'm about to place here works, you can check out what I've done so far.

http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.editAlbumPhotos&albumID=1920522&MyToken=fbf8d797-c52e-44a6-bdcf-5f0cfbc8e706

Sorry to make it a myspace, but that's all I've gotten around to doing so far. Didn't feel like resizing the pictures or signing up for photobucket or any of that stuff. Maybe later. So yeah, that's what I've done so fat. Next thing I gotta do is make a mold of the head+goggles so I have a negative and can make duplicates before I drill the locator holes. And stuff.

Point is, if everything turns out right, I may be able to make custom fit goggles for anyone willing to be life-cast. In other words, if I can cover your head with plaster and alginate.

So here's to hopin.

Some things on my mind about mens playawear lately. I am really getting tired of the fake fur thing. Coats are great, but those leg warmers are soooo over to me. Like fashion in the default world, I think we need to move forward and not stay in some Burning Man time warp.

I won't be making much clothing this year for the guys but I will be making more hot pants, less flare on the bottom, more function; like adding some pockets on the outside.

I still like kilts and gladiator style skirts for guys. Maybe some shorts that are functional and less snug.

what's on your minds lately for this summer playawear? have you given it any thought?

especially my friend leo who found himself at the Deep End on friday afternoon when the emergency services guys came through warning of a hellatious storm on the way ... but Leo was wearing his big black pirate coat, and , well, the Deep End being the Deep End, lets just say the dancing didn't stop and Leo didn't run for cover. he was kept safe from the high winds, and strolled back to camp with a HUGE grin on his face and gave me a big hug!

i'm trying to decide what sewing machine to buy. i've pretty much decided on new. obviously i will be sewing faux fur so i need it to have a strong motor. and all metal parts seems like the strongest and best advice i've heard.

and i don't want to spend more than $250 and would prefer to spend $200.

i've heard janome is nice but the cheaper kinds have weak motors. the cheapest one with a strong motor seems to be like $300.

i've had pfaff and elna recommended strongly to me but i can't seem to find anywhere to buy them in the us. online anyway.

i've been told kenmore is good and generally has all metal parts but is a bit cheaper than janome.

after looking around this model seems to fit the bill...

www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do

anybody know anything about it? i don't see anything about whether it has metal parts or not. it weighs 21lbs which seems on the high side and would indicate metal.

thai pants
loose linen drawstring pants
smoking jackets
take thick knit knee socks....cut off toe part..instant armwarmers
capes, cloaks (to easy to make)
long kimono vests (hot!)

zentai full bodysuits
top hats!
turbans! this is the NEW NEW thing, very in right now. make your own, embellish the hell out of it.

other suggestions:
take any old leather jacket...cut off the sleeves....instant vest.
get a suit from used clothing shops - spray paint it using floral paints ( they flex) also: get fabric paints, incl glow in the dark, paint it up!,
embellish your old clothing with trims, cut into it, shred it.

west coast: Fabric Tac sold at most fabric shops
east coast: Magna Tac "
these two are the same thing, made by Beacon, just a name difference

For heavier costume glueing my fave glue is E6000 sold at Tap Plastics, online or jewerly making suppliers. This is one of the most solid glues out there. I use it for mostly non-fabric glueing.

For gems and rhinestones: Gem Tac works

For Leather: Barge glue

Hot Glues can be known to peel off in the heat. There are MANY difference types and grades of strengths of hot glue. There is one specifically for fabrics. Check online for sourcing. I always get extra strength hot glue for standard usage of hot glueing. There is also Glwo in the Dark Hot glue, which glows for a little bit but not for hours due to the minimal glow pigment in the glue.
so, i've had this truly enormous amount of peacock feathers (several hundred) for many years now and have been longing to show them off out on the playa. unfortunately i have no crafting experience whatsoever and don't know where to begin!

i really want to show off the sheer amount of them so i'm thinking of something like a headdress flowing back into an mane/wig of pure feathers. i'm not sure about keeping most of them almost full length or cutting them to shape into a flowing mane down the middle of my back aways?

or something?

any ideas? and any ideas on how to actually make such a thing? how to attach the feathers so that they won't fall off? what to attach it to that won't fall off but won't be too uncomfortable? i also don't want it to be just a hat or something, i want it to kind of flow back from my forehead with it curving down to my nose but not really being a full mask.

We selected a wonderful faux-fur with gorgeously colored tips and underlayers. We also chose an excellent black lining (featuring a phoenix pattern) (get it? rising from the flames?). ALEXIIS was patient with my colorblindness. I am certain that with her sewing artistry, these fabrics will unite to form a stupendous reversible (WARM!!)

During my collaboration with a fellow Disorienter on Zentai bodysuits, we made simple gloves for him. Most gloves require side panels along the sides of the fingers, but we choose to try a simplier method which you can do yourself.

Take your hand and arm and lay flat on a long piece of paper. Spread your fingers out, but not too much.
Trace the outline of your hand/arm. Be liberal, meaning point the pencil perpendicular, as you trace. ( not right against the skin)
Add about 1/2 " seam allowance around the traced shape: this is your glove pattern.
Cut 4 using your pattern. 2 for each hand.

The best fabrics to use are spandex or knit fabrics. We did notice that some fingers were a bit squashed, so you might add a tinge more to your traced pattern, or even lengthen the fingers by about 1/4 - 1/2".

Use a tight zig-zag stitch setting at about 3 or 4. Stitch all around. OR try a serger but be very careful when serging between the fingers.
Clip, meaning a tiny tiny cuts along the seam allowance between the fingers, so the fabric can stretch more. Don't clip into the stitched seam but right up to it.

I do not recommend using a straight stitch as the seams will break. If you are hand sewing, try using Wooly Thread: a nylon stretchy thread, that is many filiments of fibers. Use Beeswax to sharpen the end so you can thread it through the needle.

I also recommend using a Ball Point or Stretch Needle for your sewing machine as well.

I am adding gloves to my project list.

You can even buy used cheap leather jackets from the Goodwill, Salvation Army and vintage shops, cut off the sleeves and make vests.
Painting images on leather: Either Textile fabric paints or Cel paints used in animation work as they are bendable. You can even use Arylics but they are more apt to flake than fabric paints.

For those who live in NYC, I am having guys come ova and discuss what they will wear for NY's decom and Halloween. I am having fabrics I bought in Los Angeles shipped asap. I bought a ton of different fabrics and trims, esp suede lacings, metallic trims, webbing.

The ulitibelt I made for my LA friend turned out well and I have some adjustments to make. I'll be spending this month working mostly on grading my hot pants pattern to different sizes, making a standard leather vest, and continuing the utilibelt design. I got some interesting pockets at an army/navy supplier, esp the hip holster which I turned into a leg pocket attached to a belt attached to a hip belt. This worked great under my tutu skirt, kept all my valuables safe. I will add a camera pocket as well, which I lacked.

The bandelier is going to be an on-going project. I'd like to see how to attach different pockets/camelback, etc. I did see a great shoulder belt with pockets which was attached with a upper back belt - (like a bra strap), so the shoulder pocket would't slip off. Made of leather, it sells on-line and is expensive, around the $200+ mark. I'll try to find it.

Unfortunately I can't remember all the sites by name. I was distracted (personal family issues) on the day of decom. But I have a good memory. AND I met the guy wh designs the GLOW fake fur coats. He sewed El Wire inside the coat, between the fur and the lining. I felt him up.........you know, so I could see how he made the coat.

Saw lots of Utilikilts, homemade kilts, hot pants, fake fur coats. Feel free to post any Decom photos which have great inspiration for yous.

anyway, for you New yorkers, Saturday is open, so lemme know if you wanna come ova. It's informal. I'm still dazed and confused from the weekend. :-)

Shrugs are basically like sleeves. A shrug covers less of the body than a vest would, but it is more tailored than a shawl. It is shorter than a vest, covering a small portion of the upper body.

You can take one of those "Magic Scarves" ( a tubular, stretchy knitted scraf used in many different ways. http://www.magicscarf.com/ )
cut a long slit in the center of the tube-like scarf, just one side. about as wide as your back.
This is your opening to get your arms through on each side of scarf.
Takes like 1 minute to do, and you now have an instant shrug.

Shrugs can be made from one piece of fabric, so easy to make. Can be hand sewn or machine which is much quicker. You can create all kinds of styles. Extra long, thin, wide. depends on the fabric and how you cut it.

I'll do a workshop on these soon I promise.

here's the basic idea.

Bruce Wayne never looked as dope on the TV as he did lurking on the rooftops of the newsprint universe.

These days the phenomenon of cosplay http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosplay finds the freek youth reverse engineering graphics to bust moves in the real world and street fashion influences causing artists to add a note of hiphop/thrash/goth/historic/ethnic flair to their 2D characters.
Chaps are nice, but just too hot in the desert afternoons.

here's one option I thought about. wearing hot shorts with a skirt over it- a la Gladiator with slahes on the sides, or even a front and back panel holding it together on the sides with a chain or leather strap. very easy to make. or if you choose to wear a short kilt, wear the hot pants underneath so you don't "flash" anyone.
