I have to cast 11 of these. Again, an easy and tool-minimum way would be best. Would sand-casting work?
I know that would be repetative, but that doesn't bother me. I just want to have all of them work and not have to recast 4 or more of them.
I think plaster casts aren't really meant to be this small, and besides, the cutting would have to be awkward, and if the peices didn't line up just right it would REALLY show.

Thoughts?

I want to make a very period set of armlets, right down to the methods of manufacture. The picture of it is in my profile, and is labeled 300BC Pontika

I know I can't cast the whole thing, but I thought I could cast the winged woman and wyrms individually with attached sprues to solder/weld onto the other gold bits.

I have here a book that has a rather short overview of sand casting, but I can't discern wether I should use this method to cast those pieces. The book is The Complete Metalsmith by Tim McCreight.

To answer, think cheap. Think that I am never going to do other metalwork again UNLESS I go on a jewelry making trip in my 50's. So I would rather not get suggestions about fancy expensive tools and crazy techniques that take ages to learn. Quick cheap and period. Jimmy-rigging assumed

cracking bronze

I am attempting to cast a bronze sword. I am made the bronze using copper grounding wire bought from the hardware and 99.9% pure tin. The bronze is a 90/10 mix. The mold is carved into gray soapstone. I am heating the mold and then planting it into a pit vertically and surrounding the mold with hot coals to keep it heated for an even flow. After casting the sword and leaving it to cool slowly over night, I quench it in a vat of water and it cracked. I tried to let the next one go cold in the mold and when I took it out it was cracked.

Any ideas as to what I could be doing wrong? Am I not getting the metal hot enough or could I be getting it to hot? Should I not keep the mold heated?

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreaciated.

Wanna introduce yourself? This be the place.....

I am Jason, Lord Gwalchmai Saethydd in the SCA, I have done casting for about 5 years, just small trinkets and projects in sand and pewter. I am currently working on a propane furnace for doing aluminum and brass. The only casting I have done is sand casting, I am looking forward to learning lost wax and a few other more modern techniques as well.

It appears to me that many of the members of this tribe are also members of the SCA apothecary group. Perhaps we ought to cast a few brass or bronze mortars and pestles. I saw some at Pennsic last year which were very nice.

What would one use to produce the cleanest item. Sand casting makes kind of a pitted "rough" looking cast in pewter. I know Soapstone or Cuddlefish works well, but, what about the rtv rubber molds?
