I myself have had numerous experiences with Dryads of different types - especially the Redwood Spirits as of late - and I have discovered that there are some that like humans and some that prefer to be left alone...
One particular Dryad comes to mind: He lives in a place called Pinnacles National Monument Park in North/Central California. "Rising out of the chaparral-covered Gabilan Mountains, east of central California's Salinas Valley, are the spectacular remains of an ancient volcano. Massive monoliths, spires, sheer-walled canyons and talus passages define millions of years of erosion, faulting and tectonic plate movement. Within the monument's boundaries lie 24,000 acres of diverse wildlands." Here is the link: pinnacles.areaparks.com/
Some of the boulders are the size of city blocks, and I've done many full moon hikes through the park and boulder caves. An interesting effect during the full moon is that when you are walking on the trails, Otherworldly "doorways" open up that are not visible during the day. And when one climbs down into the boulder caves from one side of the monument to the other, well, it is a pretty interesting experience! In fact, when you are in this park, it's like you can imagine that you are on any planet in any time period - it is truly a "playground of the gods"!
Getting back to the Dryad story, though: every time I climbed down into the boulder caves that lead from the west side of the monument to the east side, I encounter an old pine tree about 20 feet from where the path begins after emerging. Now, this Dryad only appears when the sun is at a certain angle (just prior to dusk) - then his face becomes visible. He has a long beard and looks very Merlin/Gandalf-like. He is not smiling, and surrounds himself and his tree with a bed of poison oak plants - a radius of about 10 feet - so no humans will approach too closely.
Not a very sociable spirit, really, but if you sit at a distance and quiet yourself and act respectful, he will tolerate your presence. I feel that he is ailing a bit and in need of healing, but he has a very defensive energy because of all the disrespectful humans that come here to party and leave beer cans and garbage around - and are loud and jarring on his nerves.
He has come to know me, though, and I no longer get a "keep away" vibe from him. I usually sit quietly in meditation and send him love and healing - which he can accept or reject as he sees fit. At first he was resistant, and I didn't push it, but eventually he came to welcome the energy from me...
Now that I am way further north in California, I don't get to go there any more, and I miss him sometimes. But now I have a new mission up here: to send love and healing and Reiki energy to those of my Redwood brothers and sisters who need it and some actually "ask" me for it! And of course, they ground and comfort me and send me their own brand of healing energy and love... :)
