i'm a photoshop ninja. My kung-fu entertains me for hours.
it's done in two layers in photoshop. my image is extracted from the background and recopied on top of the original photo, then i select an area of the original photo to lighten, and it looks like i'm lightening the background... but really i'm lightening the whole photo, it's just that my figure is on a separate layer. You know? if i had lightened myself AND the background, then i would have been completely overexposed.
But sharif had good advice. it's the tragedy of having black hair. i fade into the background and have to have exstensive graphic design skills to pull myself out.

Sharif, your critique is right on. A lot of vigilance is needed for Sandra's raven dark hair in darker backgrounds. I've since learned to add 2/3 stops more hair light, because the LCD preview looks better than the photo really is. Also, the light meter really helps.
