So viewing your tribe site speaks to almost all my favorite things in life. (Add pugs and you'll have it all covered!) I don't get on to tribe very often lately, but when I do, your tribe is always one of the first I go to. It is such a pleasure to look at how you've posed and lit subjects. And you seem to be almost as in control with your candid shots as you are with your studio shots. So thank you from someone who's just one of the audience. I just wanted you to know how much pleasure I get from your artwork!

I love the grace and beauty of the dance and the outfits and nothing short of awesome!

HI Everyone -
I'm not the moderator for this tribe, but i am a friend of Michael and I just have to post something that i think is important. You wouldn't know if from looking at this tribe, but Michael Baxter actually spends nearly every weekend, Saturday AND Sunday, taking photos of dancers. Sometimes he takes studio shots to enhance a dancer's portfolio. Sometimes he attends festivals, shows, or competitions in order to support the dance community as a whole. I know his schedule is booked solid for the next 3 months with dance events and solo photo shoots.

Even as his output increases in volume and quality, I see less and less of that work posted here by the dancers who benefit from it. Please remember that Michael does not maintain his own website and is not particularly interested in promoting himself . He doesthis work because he loves photography and middle easern dance. But it would be wonderful to see some dancer's favorites posted here - as a tribute to him, and to say 'thanks' for the tireless hours he puts in behind the camera.

This tribe is the only on-line presence for his bellydance photography and it would be great for everyone if it could serve as a growing example of HIS body of work. So dancers, if you have been photographed by Michael Baxter, please pick a favorite of your collection and share it with the community that he works so hard to promote. If you feel shy about it, or you feel like you're being egotistical by posting a gorgeous photo of yourself, let me assure you - That Is Not the Case. It is a tribute to the photographer who took the photo and a wonderful way to say 'thank you'.

looking forward to seeing some action on this tribe,
sandra

Hello belly dancers who danced at Rakkasah West 2007 (main stage),

I have 22132 high-resolution digital photographs of every belly dancer who danced on the main stage. No one at all was missed from Friday's opening with the sounds of Pangia to Sunday's closing by Ava Fleming.

If have not already contacted me, and you would like your photos, please PM me here on tribe, or send me an email (my email address is at the bottom of this message).

I will provide you every single photo I took of your performance in a digital form on disk media, but I cannot make prints, and I cannot possibly email you the photos. Please indicate in your message your shipto address. Then, I need to know what kind of media you can use, either DVD or CD. Photos on DVD media are readable by a computer equipped with a DVD drive, but will not read on a consumer DVD player for a TV. This because the DVD contains image data, not movie data. DVD is more convenient for me because the photos are very large, and a lot more of them fit on a DVD. If you don't have a DVD drive on your machine, no worries, just let me know, and I'll send your photos on CD(s) instead.

The full collection of 164.2 GB of photos is going to Rakkasah soon. Once this is done, I will be starting disk imaging for all dancers who have contacted me. I will need a little time to ship to everyone, but everyone who asks will definitely receive their photos. It would be helpful if troupes could please generally accept one copy of the photos via a single contact person. On the other hand, there is a large amount of data, so (for example) if you have troupe members in separate states, and only one set of media would be greatly inconvenient for you, then just let me know that in your Tribe mail/email, plus then indicate the additional shipto address and media requirements.

My belly dance photography is a gift of artistry to the belly dance community. You do not pay me. The photos are for your unrestricted use at zero cost, in any media, for any number of copies, without licensing encumbrances whatsoever. Free, as in freedom.

Blessings and Light,
Michael
and he won!

On a vote of 5 - 2 in favor of Michael Baxter and Taverna Bistro (our favorite Turkish restaurant) it was decided that having a liquor licence would not change the family atmosphere already established in the small, neighborhood restaurant, and that although council memebers noted that bellydancing "can get really racy" - it was decided that it probably wouldn't pose an imminent public safety risk.

Yay for Michael Baxter! He not only takes gorgeous photos of us! He stands up and fights for our right to bellydance. He spends his evenings arguing that bellydancing is not stripping! He explains to government officials that bellydancing is a family-friendly, traditional, and ancient form of entertainment and artistry.

Along with a full day of stage dancing, four workshops with some of the regions most respected dance instructors, we're pleased to offer dancers an exciting opportunity - Studio photos by not one, but two of Northern California's best dance photographers.

The photographers will be offering photography sessions for soloists, duets or troupes, and you can bring multiple costumes and do several mini- sessions throughout the day. This is a great time to get photos for your website. For students new to the dance, promotional photos can seem like a daunting chore, so we have made it easy by bringing the photographers right to the party. Tell your students, troupe members and pull out your best and newest costumes!

In three waves of activity, I sent out 38 sets of high-resolution photo disks to individual dancers or troupes from DDF 2006. The first wave of this was immediately after the event itself. This all worked quite well, I was able to supply any dancer or troupe who contacted me relatively soon after DDF was held.

However, collecting the entire set of nearly 10000 photos for the DDF organizers to use in web resolution had proved problematic in ways that even a slightly larger show (Rakkasah 2006, 16540 photos) had not.

This situation was totally inexplicable, and at times downright spooky .... at the show itself some camera media randomly failed, and some photos were lost :-(. Then much later, I literally had not one, but several pieces of robust software fail dramatically. Other downstream problems included specific individual yet random photo files that literally initially refused to be resized into web resolution! Ultimately, an EXTRA 100GB of disk space had to be added to my Linux server farm in order to allow the copying needed to resequence all of the photos to maintain the order they were recorded in given some losses, and the roll-over of the photo counter from 0001 -> 9999 -> 0001. Ugh-o-rama!

Finally, finally ... after solving significant technical issues... I was finally able to send the entire collection of 9996 extant DDF 2006 photos to the DDF festival organizers. They have so very kindly posted many of these online, and they've sent out an incredibly sweet press release about this via email.

Bay Area belly dancers have created a new business paradigm for performance DVD's. Each dancer has donated a skill (such as video editing, PR, graphic design, etc) to the collective, making this project a collaborative effort that is driven by a love of the dance rather than making a profit. Each performer will have equal and unlimited rights to reproduce and sell this labor of love. With the help of TV producer Steve Fyffe (Michelle Joyce's husband), "By Dancers for Dancers" will be released in the Spring. Dancers include: Sandra, Mira Betz, Nanna Candelaria, Zari, Zaheea, Luna and Michelle Joyce.

This may come out as naive but I need to know what protocol is on this.
My troupes do loads of events. One of my troupes doesnt allow for any photography of our performances at all unless it is by someone we made prior arrangements with and they are taking the pics for our use. That troupe does more risque type performances.

The other troupe (a belly dance troupe) is much more flexible with being photographed at events and shows and we have no qualms of people taking our pics. 100% of the time, either people have offered to share pics with us vie email, slide shows or have offered to make a CD of our pics to give us-free.
At times, we compensate those who do this service for us in different ways, without them asking. We also look to those photographer's work we like the most for hiring to do shows with us or sittings for our troupe in the future.
We recently did an event where I noticed some poeple up front taking our pics with some nice fatty cameras. I naturally approached them as I always do, in the event they are with press or something like that to see if they need any info. I also usually mention that we'd like to have a copy of our images. All have always agreed. From this particular event, I just spoke with one of the photographers, and I asked him for a copy of our images. He said it would be $25. He never asked permission to take our pics or to use our pics, and he told me in our conversation that he plans to use at least one of them for his portfolio. He also told me about some upcoming fetish show he was doing and I dont know if he plans to use any of us in that regard but I sure would hate to know our images are floating about for use anywhere.

Here is my naivete:
Shouldnt a photographer ASK permisson first b/f taking shots they later plan to use in shows or in their portfolio? At the very least, out of a general respect? Isnt it a bit preumptuous to assume any "Joe" can snap pics of our shows then later use them at will?

I relayed to him that in my 10 year experience doing this belly dance thing, all photgraphers have always offered a CD to us for, at the very most, cost of supplies and credit on any promo stuff we may use the pics for.
He then relayed to me thag in his 35 years experience he gets paid for his work.
"Uh yeah-well I never HIRED you for your work!" (what I wanted to say)
Any advice?

It was a complete and total belly dance weekend, virtually all waking hours. On Saturday I had the chance to photograph the lovely Mel and Slava, including new experimental work with photography under UV illumination and glowing stencil body art. You can check-out some photos that Mel has posted on this Tribe recently. That was a wonderful and engaging day, as we worked really hard on conveying a kind of story for every photo, by inserting numerous little details with each scene we did. We also detail-checked several of them with test prints in the studio.

Then Sunday was two photoshoots back-to-back. First was work with the stunningly beautiful Ahava and Princess Zahara, award-winning belly dancers. It was really nice to work with them, because I'd photographed them several times in festivals, but not in a studio before. Our work was a lot of fun. Both belly dancers produced striking belly dance poses at their first studio photoshoot. Ahava has grace about her movement, and a smile that will light up your whole evening. Princess Zahara shows such incredible joy in her dance. One photo series we did is about all her trophies, and I really liked that set. There are some stunning portraits, for both belly dancers, I think from this work as well.

Then Sandra and Michelle graced the studio in the mid-afternoon. We worked some pre-thought-out lighting and new poses that they had been researching. As always, doing our research in advance completely improves preparedness. Our work is more focused, but that's sort of at an abstract level; preparedness really allows us to be open to the synergy that unfolds as we work, and it definitely improves pacing. Seems like Michelle and Sandra now hold the record for burning through one of my 4GB compact flash device with numerous really excellent photos. And different -- we did not want to do the same stuff over, and over! Plus I aim to be a new and completely different photographer each photoshoot. However, it really helps in the collaboration that we've worked so much and so well together, that pretty much what telepathy doesn't solve, generally a single word or even a sound then contributes to, as we work.

But wait there's more! There cannot ever be enough belly dance, right? After a really quick studio cleanup in the late-afternoon, Sandra, Michelle and I then went to Setareh's Hafla Grande in San Jose to see even MORE belly dance! We saw Setareh's troupe, several individual dancers (Paloma, Raja, Shanna, Naiya, Setareh herself,... and several other lovely dancers). There was live music with Flowers of the Nile band. And of course Michelle and Sandra danced as well. It was also a pleasure to see Maria, and other of Sandra's students there.

You may see some of this work become posted here, variously in time.

Blessings and Light,
Michacel

Our first restaurant night with Michelle, who'd just arrived, was tremendous fun. Since Michelle mentioned in an earlier post here on Tribe the funny episode with the Turkish belly dancer in the Fish Market area of Instabul, I thought I'd show that: Hey I'm not all super-serious (just "mostly, a lot, super-serious, but not entirely") by posting the funny photos which tell that story. The captions form a miniature travelogue. Hope you enjoy.

I just posted a sneak preview of some photos, which are lovely. There are literally thousands from the trip, so it will take a while to sort through them. But there are some great ones... including Michael being pulled up by a dancer in Istanbul. The funny end to the story is that she then shoved him and said "money"... which sort of put a damper on the experience. But goodhearted Michael ended up giving her $20 anyway!

Michael, it is so exciting to see your photographic knowedge, skill, and passion grow year after year. Your gift to the dance community is priceless.

Some selected photoshoots with these three lovely belly dancers are now posted. Each dancer was super creative, and we collaborated well together.

Salena had a vision, and brought numerous props we used to create a new kind of tablaeux set for belly dance. We even ran out to Home Depot to pick up live plants to add to the set design. We worked her vision in several different variants, and through this work, I made the discovery that one kind of sort of more ornate set can be lighted multiple different ways, with the belly dancer placed in different places, and each kind of variation has completely different results.

Katarina is an amazing dancer: her dance and costume designs tell a dramatic story. She worked hard on a rose headpiece right at the studio, and her costumes otherwise are rich with detail. Her sea-shell costume itself is a work of art ... to see her dance and pose in this incredible design was awe inspiring. I loved this work with her, because it had mythic qualities, which is how I experience The Dance.

Freya was so kind, and we collaborated so well together under basically minimalist conditions. We had an outdoor location, 2-3 costumes, but only limited time due to sunlight falling in the late part of last Thursday. This "golden light hour" (which is ~40-50 minutes that we stretched much longer into ~180 minutes, sometimes usign reflectors :-) generally works well. But we had to do poses relatively quickly. Freya just picked the pace right up, and we got so many lovely photos from that day.

Plus a couple of Sandra's recent live shows. I've made some selects, but I'm too tired to crop-edit-and-resize for Tribe just now. Please standby until tommorow night for some really exciting belly dance photos of Zemira, Celena, and Flor De Luna that were part of the photoshoot with Shanna; some of my own selects of Aazura; some of my selects of Sandra in club lighting; Salena in some really way cool sets, ohmigod it looked like a vinyl belly dance record cover; some absolutely incredible costuming self-designed by Katarina; and tonights wonderful oozingly gorgeous outdoor sunset photoshoot with Freya, Your Cabaret Gypsy.

Sandra, Michelle, and also Sausan have posted some photos they like in this tribe, check them out. This is work from separate photo sessions we did together this weekend.

Also, please check out Shayna's favorite photos from this weekend also, which she previously mentioned (below). Here's her Tribe URI:
http://people.tribe.net/shaynaz/photos

And I'm now officially behind, ugh! There are photos from previous sessions I have wanted to post also, but I've been insanely busy. Hope to get to that sometime soon. Thank-you to all my wonderful belly dance friends for just up and posting photos they like. That is one aspect about our collaborative style of work that I like a lot ... the sharing of editorial choice! I like the fact that YOU can select what appeals to you from the work, not just what I like ... my Inner Eye for belly dance is moving toward 20/20 vision, but it's still what appeals to the dancer which makes the most impact, I feel.

Blessings to all,
