Hey,
I am a bellydancer in Mississippi and closing in on being 5 months pregnant and I am defintely begining to show. Because of this, my costuming choices and attention to my physical limitations are becoming more of a concern. In recent months Michelle Campbell has become my patron Goddess for the archetype of a shining example all the beauty that is possible in a pregnant bellydancer. I was wondering if anyone (or Michelle herself) had any details of her expierence or how long she danced before her due date. If anyone else has any advice or stories to share on the matter that would great. This is also my first pregnancy so I need all the information and advice I can get!

Re: Bellydancing and Pregnancy
Tue, March 28, 2006 - 6:31 AMHi Katy!
Congratulations!!!
I have a six months old baby girl and I really understand what you´re going through!
I did shows until I was 5 months pregnant and danced until I was six ...after that, it became very tiresome and the couch seemed like a better option ...LLLLOL
But there´s a lot of peolple dancing further on in their pregnancy...there´s no established rule, U just have to follow what your body tells you: if it feels good you keep on enjoying those good vibes!!...Your baby will appreciate!...
The only advice I was given was not to do a lot of strong movements (like powerful shimmies) in the early three months...
Oh, and I got back to practice a month and a half after I had my baby!!
I wish you all the best to you and your baby! But ...prepare yourself ...to major happiness! ;)LOL
Love

Re: Bellydancing and Pregnancy
Fri, March 31, 2006 - 8:01 PMCongrats and Ditto on what Marta said, I have a almost 3 year old and a 7 month old. I stopped at about 5-6 months with my first cause I thought I should and I had work to finish and so on and so forth. But with my 2nd, I pretty much danced up until the end. My last performance was on July 1st and my son was born September 3rd. But I kept going to rehearsals until the end of August. I found I always felt better after dancing, I just had to pace myself and slow down. No drum solos or fast shimmies. And I started dancing as soon as I could after with my son in tow. So do what works best for you, I think if you stay moving, dancing or whatever, I think will make you feel better physically and emotionally. It truly is beautiful to see a woman dancing pregnant. I think I did some of my best performing pregnant. Anyways, good luck, and enjoy, it really is a wonderful time. I occassionally miss it.

Re: Bellydancing and Pregnancy
Mon, April 10, 2006 - 7:51 AMhi there,
i was just reading thru these posts and wanted to give you my experience.
In my first pregnancy i didn't do that much dancing as i was a little worried and i didn't really know what i should and shouldn't be doing and my teacher seemed to know very little about the subject, she also seemed quite worried about me dancing while pregnant.
However, by the time i was pregnant with my second baby i had done quite a bit of research on the subject and talked to lots of midwifes and other dancers about it and in my second pregnancy i danced and danced and danced. I carried on teaching all the way thru' and i did my last performance 2 weeks before i was due - to a belly dance audience. I also danced all the way thru labour as it helped me so much!! In my second pregnancy i also did loads and loads of yoga designed for pregnancy. Now i'm not saying that there is a definite connection but my first baby was delivered thru emergency c-section and my second baby was delivered completely naturally and although a long pre-labour "propper" labour was about 4 hours! you can make your own conclusions!
I think all pregnant ladies, especially belly dancers become so aware and in tune with their bodies when pregnant so i would just say listen to your intuition and do what feels right for you. Be gentle, nourish yourself and your baby growing and enjoy this first pregnancy , relish and delight in it!

Re: Bellydancing and Pregnancy
Thu, April 20, 2006 - 10:18 AMHi,
I danced right up to the end, and even through the labour - very slow figure of 8's an hip circles - no turkish drops!!!!!
Standing/dancing throughout was more comfortable for me, and losing myself in my favourite music too (although fig 8's to Motley Crue and AC/DC probably looked ridicioulous)!!!
I know some one who ran a class the same day as she gave birth! Just no sharp movements and breast feed to get your belly back into shape ready to start again asap.
Good luck

Mon, May 8, 2006 - 11:58 PMhi katy!!!
awwwhhhh!!!
congratulations!
it is truly the most amazing experience!!!!!
i toured with the bellydance superstars in the u.k. until i was about 3 and a half months pregnant.
i came home for a week or two and then went back out to england for a week with them for the glastonbury festival.
i was living in seattle for my pregnancy and the birth so i only danced once at a benefit for new orleans.
then i taught classes for 6 weeks in seattle until i was 8 and a half months.
i had a great pregnancy.
i had lots of energy
UNTIL
8 months!
things just got tough!!!!
i firmly believe YOU know your body best.
it tells you.
don't push yourself to your max at all.
take it a little easy. your little body is working overtime doing the very impotant job of creating a new life!
things are different in there.
all your joints are loosening up, so you can easily over-extend yourself without feeling like you are.
i think walking or swimming are also great ways to excercise.
eat the best you can.
do things that make you feel strong.
try your best to not have a c-section.....you want to push your baby out.
prepare
and then surrender.
my very best wishes for you, truly!!!
please give your little belly a rub and a kiss!

Re: Bellydancing and Pregnancy
Thu, May 18, 2006 - 9:59 AMAll that I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you so much to everyone that has responded to my post and shared their experiences with belly dancing and becoming a mother Goddess. The stories and advice that everyone has given has helped me immeasurably to say the least and all your kind words have all been taken to my heart.
Michelle,
I have to admit something that was sort of a coincidence with my pregnancy and your tribe group. Back in early November when I joined I was looking a photos of your last stages of pregnancy and the ones of you dancing while you were showing and I thought how remarkable you looked and what awesome energy you seemed to radiate while creating a new life inside of you. I thought to myself that I could not wait to one day dance while I was pregnant and hopefully I would half as awesome as you. Then bam......the beginning of December I found out my big news. I have to say immediately you became my role model for the "quintessential mother Goddess belly dancer" and for what I hoped my pregnancy to be.
As of right now I am approaching my 7th month and I am beginning to feel the stress of carry the little bundle. I am moving a little slower but when it some to dancing I seem to perk right up, but everything else....forget about it! Thanks for the heads up about watching out to not over-exert myself, and the fact that everything gets all stretched out and not to push my limits. I am trying to squeeze as many performances that our troupe does before my time runs out. We only do at most maybe 3 a month but I don't want to miss one ya know.
I have another question, leading up until your delivery, how did you prepare mentally and physically? Any special breathing or meditation techniques etc.? And about not getting a c-section, I totally hear you about that. It seems that doctors are c-section happy so I will definitely do all that I can to avoid it.
Well, thank you so much Michelle for sharing and any advice other advice that you can think of don't hesitate to send it my way. How is little Akasa doing? I just love his name! Many blessings to you and your family~~~**~***~*
