I was wondering if anyone knew of a source for mongolian style clothing around 1175 to early 1200's? Have tried looking locally but my library and other local sources are more than a bit lean in the mongol histories. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hello, Im in Illinois, looking for one or two people who would like to ride share to pennsic this year. Im leaving on July 25th or 26th, depends on my work schedule and riders availability and will be returning on August 10th LATE / August 11th Early. If anyone is in or around the area you can reach me here or at pennsic37rideshare@hausadelbrecht.org to discuss plans. I have a 4 door Lincoln Town Car and a Trailer. I do have alot of stuff, so the ideal candidate(s) would be transporting light mundane gear, not full period kit. Lets discuss and make plans, shall we?

Known World Players auditions for "Medea" (x-posted)

The Known World Players announces auditions for this year's Pennsic
performance of Euripides' "Medea". Rehearsals take place in the
afternoons at Pennsic War 37 with our performance the final Friday
evening of War Week.

Auditions will be held at the following events:

Midrealm:
Masque of Courtly Love (February 23). Event website:
http://alderford.org/events/masque2008
Royal University of the Midrealm (March 29). Event website:
http://midrealm.org/greyhope/events/RUM/index.htm

East Kingdom:
Noisemakers Schola III (February 23). Event website:
http://www.eastkingdom.org/event-detail.html?eid=1522

There is no monologue required to audition, however, if you would like
to prepare one that is fine. Auditions will consist of scene readings.
All roles are open.

FAQ:
*What are the Known World Players?
We are a troupe of actors who perform period plays in a period fashion
at the Pennsic War. This will be our 8th year in existence.

*Who do I talk to for more information?
You can contact the founding director, THL Tyzes Sofia (called Zsof) at
zsofsky@gmail.com, or for questions about the East Kingdom auditions
contact Master Lorcan Dracontius at lorcan@dracontius.net.

*I'm worried about the time commitment at Pennsic. Can you tell me more
about the rehearsals?
We rehearse every afternoon from the middle Sunday of Pennsic through
our performance the final Friday of Pennsic. The larger the role, the
more time required at rehearsals. If you would still like to perform but
with a smaller role, please let us know. A large role will require your
presence at every rehearsal.

*I can't make the auditions, but still want to be a part, how can I do this?
We are more than willing to do auditions over the phone, or set up time
at an event either one of us will be at. If you can't make an audition,
please don't let that stop you from contacting us.

*Do you have a website?
Sure! Head on over to http://www.karolinekramer.com/kwplayers

Have any other questions? Feel free to contact Zsof.

I am currently planning activities for 'It Takes MY Child to Raze a Village' (a children/adults co-operative event) that will take place in 2008. The autocrat is finalizing the date and location this and next week, it will be somewhere in Canton of Weldlake, Pentamere, Midrealm (Brighton/Howell, MI).
I need to know everyone's favorite Youth/Children's Activities from an event or SCA activity. If you saw something really cool being done, if you or your child really enjoyed something, if you've always wanted to see something done, please let me know (either here or email me at ladyseadhli@gmail.com)

I am cross-posting this in several places on and off tribe.

Brawl at the Crooked Dragon 2008 - Call for Committee

Greetings to all Gentles of Falcons Quarry, neighbors, and friends,

As you know the Brawl at the Crooked Dragon is held every year the weekend after July 4th. This year our new Seneschal Seamus Fraser has appointed me as Autocrat. Instead of having a co-autocrat, I will be organizing an Event Committee. The goal of the committee is to have everyone work together from the outset. I am hoping that this will encourage strong communication and organization as we grow closer to the event.

This is the official Call for Committee....

Please consider helping us plan the upcoming 2008 Brawl at the Crooked Dragon. We are looking for individuals to fulfill the following duties at the event:
Feast
Heavy Weapons
Rapier
Archery
Youth Combat
Merchant Coordinator
Heraldry/Voice Heraldry
Troll
Lunch Tavern
Chirurgeon
Youth Activities

Although the positions will be familiar to everyone, the difference is that the committee will have monthly meetings (in person or online) so that we all know how things are progressing. Each individual on the committee will be responsible for finding people to help them fulfill their duties. I hope that this committee based event planning will make sure that we can keep in better communication and assist each other consistently.

I hope to form the committee by November so if you are interested please contact me at your earliest convenience. If you have any questions or comments regarding the different positions or the committee as a whole please contact me at Kateline_eliot@verizon.net or (440) 865-0969 (no calls after 9pm).

I look forward to working with any and all of those gentles that are interested in assisting with this event.

Yours in Service,
Lady Kateline Eliot
Autocrat
Falcon’s Quarry

Attention North & South Oaken Warriors (x-posted as requested)

Greetings unto the fighters of the North and South Oaken regions,

For the past three years, I have issued the Oaken Ironman Challenge. The number of brave men and women who rise to the challenge has grown every year, assuring their place in history.

For one last time, I am putting forth the challenge!
This will be your last opportunity to distinguish yourself on the field of battle--and complete your Oaken Ironman set!

The conditions of the challenge should be familiar:
come fight for the glorious Kingdom of the Middle in every mass war point battle offered. There are 6 opportunities to take the field for your King and Queen this year:

* Great Wall Battle
* Open Field Battle (x3)
* Woods Battle
* River (bridge) Battle

Note that the Castle Battles on Monday are not war point battles, so they are not included in the challenge. However, you are encouraged to fight in these battles, if you are able.

Those stout men and women from the Oaken Regions who do so in the capacity of armored fighter, combat archer, marshal, scout, waterbearer, chirurgeon, or any combination thereof will be awarded a distinctive token that heralds them as an Oaken Ironman. I have commissioned a unique token to be worn about the neck.

Prepare yourselves, sons and daughters of the Dragon!

Pennsic Class Schedule is UP!!

Posting for Master Asim... please feel free to post to your Kingdom lists and wherever else this information will be useful. Thanks!!

Merhaba!

The initial class schedule for Pennsic University is now online! We'll be adding updates and corrections as we go, as per usual; what's online now reflects the information that will be in the Pennsic Booklet itself. Please feel free to start planning your Pennsic leaning now. :)

And if you think you'll have a couple of hours, feel free to offer to help us out at A&S Point! We're always in need of a few folks to help teachers and students have that much the better of a Pennsic.

Offers to help, Corrections, and Questions may, of course, be directed to me, Master Asim. Also feel free to pass the word about both class postings and volunteering to whatever lists or persons you see fit.

Thanks to the people who are aiding me this year, and thank you to all of you who teach and attend!

-----Asim, Pennsic Chancellor for Pennsic War XXXVI

Rede of Sarnac

For those of you who may not have read it elsewhere, Master Aaron Fahued Swiftrunner wrote this rede to memorialize the passing of Ba'adur Sarnac Kir, eighth King of Ealdormere and beloved of the Barony of Roaring Wastes (metro-Detroit, Michigan) in the Midrealm where he played, fought, and laughed many days of the week. -- Iasmin
-----

Rede of Sarnac

The King did call his jester, but the jester never came
The King did need his warlord but the needing was in vain
The King called for the great Heart beating in the wood
All these folk would hasten nigh if and when they could

The King had need of folding steel singing on the wind
The King had need of mighty arm to lift him up again
The King had need of chivalry and a golden ring
The King had need of Sarnac for all those many things.

The Novices upon the field serving well their lord
The Novices lifting shield by inland sea and fjord
Runestone dwells beneath a tree and song will linger there
Singing of the many things Sarnac had to share.

Every smile that found a home with a passer-by
Every laugh upon the wind to make a spirit fly
Every cheer for trilliums grown so well in bloom
And kisses for Jolecia, beloved of her groom

Northern lands are quieter for the space behind
Left by he who had another road he had to find
Though upon that road we hear the tread of mighty feet
They return to watch over dear Amber as she sleeps

Close your eyes and think upon the never ending smile
Close your eyes and thank the Gods for the many miles
He walked with us and fought with us and drank with us and more
They surely are a reason to be ever thankful for.

The empty place where he stood, none can ever fill
Though a thousand come and try no one ever will.
For each and every one of us who knew him raise a glass
Thankful he was with us, and in sorrow that he passed

In Ealdormere in forest deep you will hear a song
Sung by all the people he brought and cheered along
Sung by all the people for his praises to the sky
For everything Sarnac was, a friend to you and I.

The King had need of folding steel singing on the wind
The King had need of mighty arm to lift him up again
The King had need of chivalry and a golden ring
The King had need of Sarnac....he was all those many things.

I realize the season is pretty much at an end, but are there any events with good archery in the Eastern parts of the Midrealm between now and Aethelmearc War Practice. I had such a bad Pennsic that I am actually considering driving South to Gulf Wars for the first time.

If you know Carolyn "Gillian Hunter", who camped with the Tuchux this past Pennsic, or Ray "Tamoc", please respond. I had hoped to see Carolyn this evening at the Sunset Lounge to discuss a costuming project, but she didn't make it. I need to get some information to Ray before this Saturday regarding a movie audition.

I am a Minister of Youth who is not afraid to be different or creative. I especially enjoy fun, period youth/children's activities. I have a few questions for you. Pretend you are going to an event that has advertised youth/children activities. What would you be excited to find at such an event? What would your child be excited to do at such an event? To be Honest, I am not looking for activity suggestions. I am not asking for "great coloring books" or "wonderful foam crowns".

Some things I have already done: leather stamping, finishing wooden hobby horses, painting wooden viking sheilds (buckler-sized), whipcording, mini marshmallow castle building, whip tops, Hold/Lay-on (Red Light /Green Light), archery tournaments (real and foam), and of course, Youth Boffer tourneys

(I have cross-posted this on other tribes)

I need to interview SCA members for a paper I'm doing for my college Feature Writing class, and since I'm supposed to be writing for the school paper I really need a local student POV.

Hi... I'm wanting to get involved in SCA middle eastern belly dancing (preferably tribal) and drumming in this kingdom. I've lived here for some time but have been on hiatus from SCA for the most part for several years. This year I've determined to get back into it and become much more active. I hope to take lessons in bellydancing, take part in drum practices if there are any, take part in court dance practice if there is one, and perhaps help with whatever else is going on in this area. I've been playing in SCA since 1991 or so, thus am not a newbie, but have taken a serious break from it. It's time to get back in the swing of it. Please let me know if you know of any weekly activities in Wurm Wald or even in nearby areas. Thanks.

Shameless promotion for Red Dragon, it's hosted by my shire so I'd like to put in a good word for it.

Many say to not have feast unless you know who's cooking, I know the cook (Malachai) and have sampled many of the dishes. They are excellent, if you generally pass on feast you'll want to make this one.

What preparations are you making to help your kingdom or group fight and win the upcoming Pennsic War? In the past I organized a band or archer mercenaries. This year though I'll likely be doing something less formal like providing loaner archery equipment to people who agree to shoot for populace points. I am also working on another project, but it is classified.

Hi All,

Just a shameless plug for Melee School. It is this coming weekend in Roswell, Ohio (just outside of New Philadelphia). It is always a good time and one of the last chances to authorize before Pennsic (if that is your sort of thing).

So, come join us for a weekend of fun and frivolity where you can test out your camping gear before Pennsic.

Cheers Everyone!

Wanna swap for a 7 Foot Longbow?

This is the crosspost from Hell... - but as there may be a few peeps here that don't frequent the other threads...

Seven Foot Oak Longbow:

What I have: - This puppy is a seven foot long, (maybe a centimeter or two shorter, but close enough) one-piece, Oak Longbow. No lamination, the only glue in it is to hold the one-piece grip in place, which is also wrapped in green leather. Comes with a reasonably worn hand-twisted string and I may toss in a mish-mosh of practice arrows. Straight longbow, so it's for either left or right-handed shooters and you do not need any extra / special equipment to string it. Pull is around the 42-45 lb. mark when using a full length arrow. (which I do) It's marked "Dragonslayer" and to be 35 lbs. @ 27" draw. (for youse of shorter arm length)
I've hardly really ever used it, (how often anyone ever see ME out on the lines?) - last SCA inspection / use was probably @ Gulf Wars a couple years back or Pennsic XXXIII? It passed no drama. Looks good. Really period-like. Bigger'n you. (one of my criteria when I bought it..) And can lob arrows so dang high and far over and beyond the Clout you'll never find 'em back. (what happened last time @ Pennsic when I loaned it out to a neighbour... - he still owes me for those..) And I've been able to peg Barney in his 10" form @ 30 yards with it around 1-out-of 2. Deliverable at Pennsic. ;-)

What I'd like: - Either $75 casheroo, (I paid $110 new and a Mom-made tunic, - if I remember right..) - or for a Right-Handed Recurve Bow that'll pass the Pennsic safety inspection easily and is around a 45-50 lb. draw at full length. No multiple-piece "techhie" looking bows please. The plainer, the better for me, - but will consider all offers. Arrows I have. (unless you're throwin' 'em in... - then what the heck?) :-D

Deliverable/swappable at Pennsic from Friday in the parking lot to the *snif* very end...

Hi all,

If you have an interest in Mongolian stuff (any Horde members?) and are in the Chicago area, I was just sent the following micro-announcement by a friend recently returned from Mongolia:

Mongolian Cultural Days
Monday, July 10-Friday, July 14: Daily, Times Vary
Daley Plaza - Washington Street between Dearborn And Clark streets
312 744 3370

Sooooo...there should be stuff going on iffin' yer into that kind of thing (which I'm not, outside of the archery stuff)

How many of you shoot for populace points at Pennsic? I ask since this past Pennsic was the first where the Midrealm won both the populace shoot and all three of the champion shoots. I'd like to do it again, and figure we should discuss what we can do to increase the number and quality of archers shooting for the Midrealm at this coming Pennsic.

I am actually free to travel in May and want to attend at least one SCA event. I live in Cleveland, so I am pretty much equidistant from Ft Miegs and Cooper's Lake. In terms of time, I can't afford to attend both. So what should I do? Shall I attend Baron Wars, or Aethelmarc War Practice? Perhaps I ought to let the weather decide. What would you recommend?

Ok I know that if I can get any information I can come to the tribe and get it from the great minds here. Ok here is my situation....an article was posted in the Morning Journal today about a society that I have never heard of. Could some read this and let me know if you have ever heard of this group I have included the entire article so that I dont take anything out of context. I would greatly appreciate either a posting or an off board reply to this. I am not a Nazi when it comes the the whole fanatasy/SCA thing however after reading this it kind of upset me enough to write a letter to the editor. Let me know if you think this is a good idea also. I thank all that help me in this matter.....Here is the article:

VERMILION -- A local Internet message board has officials wondering if it's simply an exercise of free speech or just a high-tech rumor mill.

VermilionOhioNews.com was created a little more than two months ago as a way for community members to communicate with each another about everything from local government to their favorite recipes. But officials in the already politically divided city now say the board has turned negative, antagonistic and, in some cases, malicious.

''It's like a bathroom wall,'' said police Chief Robert Kish. ''... People can post whatever they want.''

And one city employee seems to have gotten caught in the web of gossip.

A Monday morning post showed pictures of city operations liaison Kenneth Baughman dressed in a kilt and standing with scantily clad men and women in leather straps and loin cloths.

Underneath the pictures was a phrase calling people's attention to the ''other side of Kenny,'' according to Web site moderator Gary Barnby, who said the pictures have since been removed.

But the damage was done.

Controversy was sparked and residents on the message boards were left with questions about the true nature of the pictures.

The images had been taken at a charity ''slave auction'' held in 2001 by a role-playing game organization associated with the popular 1960s television show ''Star Trek.''

The pictures were taken from a Web site Baughman, 40, said he had created to promote the organization called the Royal Kidorian Highlanders, but he has not been moderator of the site for years.

After the photos were posted on the message boards, viewers almost immediately began accusing Baughman of taking part in sado-masochistic rituals, sometimes involving minors.

Baughman, who is also the head of the city's newly created youth council, said that perception couldn't be farther from the truth.

''It's not a bunch of drunks running around naked,'' Baughman said. ''It's family oriented. It's nothing sadistic or evil.''

According to Baughman, RKH is a registered nonprofit organization that has raised between $1,500 to $1,800 for charities that provide books to children and libraries.

Baughman participated in the event between 2001 and 2003 as a moderator. He said people would volunteer to dress in costume and be auctioned off as ''slaves.'' Only those 18 or older could attend or participate in the event.

''I'm a gamer. Big deal,'' Baughman said, shrugging his shoulders.

Mayor Jean Anderson, who hired Baughman in January to help reorganize the city's records, defended the part-time city employee.

''Somebody is trying to make something out of nothing,'' she said. ''The picture on the message board is only half-truth. People are trying to make it something immoral and kinky and illegal.''

Baughman's position was created amid controversy in the wake of Anderson's discovery that about 500 boxes of city records were either missing, out of order or deleted when she took office in January. The Erie County Prosecutor's Office has been investigating allegations that previous mayor Jimmy Davis' administration was somehow involved with the disappearing records.

Anderson, who has had a chilly relationship with council since defeating Davis in November, said investigators have found RKH to be a legitimate organization, part of a huge gaming industry.

''When you are going to throw things out there like they did with Kenny, people run with that,'' Anderson said. ''But guess what? The other side is that he likes science fiction and does things for charity. Why would you make something so awful and ugly out of that?''

Kish was approached by City Council after the pictures appeared on the site and was asked to determine if Baughman had participated in any illegal activity.

Kish said police found the organization to be a legitimate ''medieval re-enactment group'' with chapters all over the country.

''You know how they have the Civil War re-enactors? It was along those lines,'' Kish said.

Monday's post was created by an anonymous user who Barnby said created a user account under the name ''biteme'' the same day.

Such anonymous users encouraged Anderson, who had initially embraced the idea of an online community forum, to remove the message board link from the city's Web site.

Anderson said she feared that anyone looking to move or open a business in Vermilion could access the forum by clicking on the link on the city's Web site and read the myriad of negative posts.

''It was clear that the intention was not a positive, productive tool,'' she said. ''And it certainly wasn't putting the city in a good place in a stranger's eyes.''

But Barnby said the mayor is pointing out just a few posts of what has been a positive forum for community debate.

''I can understand (Anderson's) reasoning, but I personally believe there has been many more positive posts than negative,'' Barnby said, adding that he looks at VermilionOhioNews.com as a way to ''unite people from the political divide'' in Vermilion.

Barnby, who also serves as the city's Webmaster on a volunteer basis, said it was actually Anderson who approached him with the idea of creating an interactive community forum.

However, Anderson said she never dreamed people would use the site in the way they have.

Since its debut, the message boards has received 140,000 hits and has 82 registered members. The rest of VermilionOhioNews.com, which includes a visitors' guide, restaurant listings and local news stories, has had 104,400 visitors.

At-large Councilman Don Flak said he used to be a registered member of the message board, but ''politely asked'' the moderator to remove his account from the site three weeks ago after he felt it was becoming a rumor mill instead of a constructive forum.

''I really think you've got a forum there where people say whatever they want,'' Flak said. ''I see a value in having a forum, but I really thought the tone of discussion in that forum was inappropriate. It came to a point where it became very petty.''

Two other city council members are registered users of the site -- Craig Fortner, Ward 5, and Heidi Strickler, Ward 2 -- according to Barnby.

In April, Baughman said he sent Barnby a letter of concern after comments poking fun at him were repeatedly posted. Baughman said he was worried innocent mockery would develop into something far worse.

''And look, my concerns were validated,'' he said. ''I'm all for free speech, but I think (message boards are) a bad idea when serious people take them seriously.''

MidRealm Combat Archery Question

Ok here's the question...
Im trying to find if the MidRealm allows "Slingers" I've found this rule:
"Hand held mechanically launched missles may include, but are not limited to:hand and staff slings, spear and dart throwers (atlatl's) and tennis ball shooting crossbows...."

But I cant find anyting specific to sling missle creation or rules in the MidRealm... might anyone here have any links or thoughts on this?

Thanks!

Well, I got to attend Blackstone this past weekend and it was a lot of fun. The new site is a bit pricey (site fee was $20) and our group got a cabin so it was another 10 bucks each for a bed. With that said it was a decent event. The site is HUGE. I heard there were 600 people there but you never would have known it. The size of the armies were probably around 100 per side and the fighting was fun. The scenarios need a bit of work to make them more fun but overall it was a fun event. I did notice a lack of classes, especially for an event of that size. Did anybody else make it and have any thoughts?

I guess there are only a few of us subscribed at this time, but perhaps this discussion will attract comments by people as they join. I of course attend NOWM since it is local and a camping event. I used to also attend Baron Wars, but have been too busy in recent years. I suppose I simply prefer camping events.
