Hafla at 3 pm. Come with music and costume to perform a solo or dance in a group during open dance time!
$10 includes all materials, classes and food, with the exception of the Tribal Bra class - you'll need an underwired foam cup style if you want to do more than observe :)

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: The Good Ol' Fashioned Tribal Shake down.

This workshop delivers drills and combinations for quicker tempos. Combination lend themselves well in improvisation, providing variety and contrast. They also prove handy as building blocks in choreography. Movements will be broken down and drilled. Combos will be joined together to form a short dance.

Mardi Love is assistant director, choreographer, and part time costumier for internationally-renowned dance company The Indigo. Mardi began dancing in San Diego with Heather Stants, and was a founding member of Urban Tribal Dance Company. She relocated to the Bay Area where she connected with the likes of Rachel Brice, Michelle Campbell, Sharon Kihara and Zoe. Mardi has toured extensively with The Bellydance Superstars. These days she dances with Rachel Brice and Zoe of The Indigo and the Le Serpent Rouge revue.

Black Rose Caravan is excited to invite you to 8 hours of workshops with Onça on Nov. 20 and 21, 2010! There will also be a show the Saturday night! And we're happy to be back at our beloved location, the Wheeler Arts Center.

The schedule will be as follows:
Saturday, November 20:
9-10 am: Registration
10 am-12 pm: Essential Stagecraft for Performers

Essential Stagecraft for Performers (Saturday morning)
Stagecraft is an essential component of powerful presentation. Staging savvy ensures that your technique and artistic intent reach the audience effectively. With over a decade of practical, multidisciplinary performance experience, Onca combines comprehensive theory, movement exercises, and drills in a rigorous overview of essential stagecraft for dancers and others. Bring your notebook and your pith helmet, as we prepare to push your staging boundaries and give you the tools to maximize your impact on any stage, epic or intimate.

Narrative Bellydance (Saturday afternoon)
Out there dancing? Have something to say! This high-spirited, concept-driven class presents a range of evocative moods - spirited, celebratory, passionate, somber...maybe even a little bit of Evil. Onça has undertaken intense study of Narrative bellydance and is on a serious mission to nurture authentic self-expression among the world's Tribal Fusionistas. This class is GREAT for getting dancers laughing, building community, and making memories.

Must-Have that Musicality! (Sunday morning)
To Embody the Music is the indisputable duty, honor, and pleasure of a bellydancer. Solid technique, slammin' glamor, studied staging... all these other elements aspect of performance serve this glorious goal: Make the nuances of the music, its soul, visible to the audience! Drills and isolations are followed by exercises in really listening, exploring, and expressing the arc, mood, and lines of the music.

The Rose and the Thorn: Dancing with Fan (Sunday afternoon)
This one is a classic in Onça's teaching repertoire and evolves continually. Inspired in equal parts by Flamenco, the Fine Art of flirtation, and every performer's need for self-defense. Onça's Fan Fusion is long on musicality, emotive power, attitude and upper body strength. Savor the flavor of passion as we explore the potential of every dancer's indispensable tool; the Fan. Most fans will work: feather fans and fan veils will be discussed, but are not usable for the purposes of class. Onça's preferred fans will be for sale at the event, or bring your own.

Deb Rubin
Deb Rubin, MA, CMT, RYT has been a life-long dancer and performer, trained and proficient in many styles, including Salsa, West African, Modern, Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, 5-rhythms, Contact Improv, Gymnastics, and of course Tribal Fusion Belly Dance. Deb Rubin workshops in Indianapolis - July 11

Deb will teach 2 workshops on July 11. Each workshop will be 2 hours in length.

The schedule will be as follows:
1-3: Bringing more Decadence to your Dance
3-4: Break
4-6: Layering and Levels - A Core Integrated Approach

"Bringing more Decadence to your Dance" is a slow and slinky workshop. I took that workshop at TF and it was amazing! We'll have a shorter version but it will blow your mind!

"Layering and Levels - A Core Integrated Approach": the name describes it well! It will be uptempo. Here's Deb's description: Layering and Levels will also include Lots of Locks, traveLLing, Deconstructing Layering, PLus other things that start with "L'. :) We'LL Learn Layering, and appLy upper body patterns to various lower body shapes, patterns, footwork, level changes, weird stances, etc. PLus, create your own combos and incarnations from the materiaL.

Given that this is short notice, I'm pricing this as cheap as I can make it. So 50$ for both workshops or 25$ each. Additional fees will apply if paying via Paypal.

Also, the workshops will be at Aiki Concepts (5129 E 65th St.) and, given the small size of the room, the number of participants will be very limited. We're talking 16 lucky few.

Workshop: The Good Ol' Fashioned

This workshop delivers drills and combinations for quicker tempos. Combinations lend themselves well in improvisation, providing variety and contrast. They also prove handy as building blocks in choreography. Movements will be broken down and drilled. Combos will be joined together to form a short dance. Mardi Love is assistant director, choreographer, and part time costumier for internationally-renowned dance company The Indigo. Aug 3-7: Indian Dance Gesture workshops with Dr.Doraswamy:

The TEACHER: Dr.Vasundhara Doraswamy, a Danseuse par excellence,
musician and venerated guru of Bharatanatyam, as well as a martial
artist and Yoga expert who earned a PhD for her research on the
correlation between Yoga and Bharatanatyam. Dr.Doraswamy is the
Director of the Vasundhara Performing Arts Center in India and an
internationally-recognized artist who travels around the world
conducting workshops in Bharatanatyam and Yoga.

The WORKSHOPS: A week of Bharatanatyam-inspired dancing, one
per evening for a week. Hand gestures, eye movements, expression,
poses, and some foot combinations will be taught. Students can expect
to develop a heightened awareness of arms, hands, eye movements, and
appropriate facial expressions. Layering and lines and the display
of feminine archetypes will be explored. Each evening's workshop will
consist of a 30-minute warmup led by Ruric-Amari, one hour of tuition
by Dr.Doraswamy, and a 30-minute cool-down. Each class is independent;
students can take any one or more in any combination.

PREREQUISITES: Good physical condition and some experience with
movement (yoga, martial arts, or any dance training). Dancers of any
genre will find this presentation of Bharatanatyam-inspired material
by a master Indian dancer to be enlightening and inspiring.

TaraSita of Rakadu Gypsy in Lexington, KY will be teaching our annual workshop this year on Sunday April 26th. The second piece of good news is that we have NOT raised our prices! A unique, versatile approach to the bellydance intensive, a weeklong designed for experienced dancers, already performing, who are looking for inspiration from an artistic standpoint and who are interested in honing their ability to express through dance.
This intimate group exploration will stretch your notions of how dance can be striking on stage, and allow you to unlock new areas of creativity in your bodies, and your mind.
The seminar brings together many of the styles and forms from dance to theater which Mira has carefully integrated into an exciting, powerful, liberating approach to creation, including: personal expression, musicality, historical and contemporary contextual analysis, structured improvisation and choreography, focused writing exercises and more.

~Explore ideas of shaping thought and feeling into meaningful forms of musical expression

This will be run more akin to a college seminar than a "bellydance class", complete with research projects, presentations, and critique. Our weekend with Karim is designed to appeal to women and men, dancers & musicians. And our new venue in the heart of the lively restaurant scene on Frankfort Ave boasts a theatre with a large stage, balcony, sound, lights and dressing room. It will be a wonderful weekend!

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1st: Five hours of instruction. $60 members, $80 all others. Vending by Donna Carleton and Nashwa.

10:00 AM - 12:30 PM: TAHTEEB & ASSAYA (for men and women). Have more fun on stage! Dancing with sticks and canes is a quintessential expression in Egyptian village dance. Karim teaches a bold yet graceful unisex cane style that incorporates the male Tahteeb bravado & mock combat AND the Assaya flirtation and spunk. Karim teaches with the straight cane (we'll use dowels) and covers all the basic spins, flips and strikes, utilizing both hands for the entire lesson. Double cane is also taught, culminating in a short "friendly battle" choreography. Register by Oct 15 and we provide your (autographed) 'canes'!

2:00 - 4:30 PM: MUSICALITY FOR DANCERS (and musicians who play for dancers). This is a movement class that will help the dancer become the physical personification of Arabic music. Karim will demystify Arabic music by identifying and explaining several recurring themes, guiding students through several songs, and leading students in dancing to each theme. The class covers Taksim, Melodic themes, Vocal vs. instrumental songs, Rhythms & rhythm changes, Melodic modulation, Song structure, Orchestration & Instrumentation. Musicians will not need instruments for this class. They can consider it a lecture, so that they can learn what will make a dancer react, and how.

8:00 - 10:00 PM: DANCE CONCERT by MEDSOK dancers and featuring Karim Nagi, who will be treating us to one of his vibrant and energetic solo performances combining both dance and drumming. $5 members, $10 all others.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2nd: Three hours of instruction. $35 members, $40 all others.
10:00 AM -1:00 PM: SAGAT & ZILLS (Dancers and percussionists, all skill levels). Karim promises to transform dancers into musicians with his distinctive and effective zill method utilizing drum techniques and an ambidextrous approach. The class includes dance combinations, solo patterns, musicality, and when-and-when-not to play within an Arabic song. Dance luminary Laurel Victoria Gray incorporated Karim's approach into her own curriculum, and Artemis repeatedly invites him back to teach at her Folk Tours Camp. This class will enlighten amateurs and inspire professionals.

LOCATION: The beautiful and historic Clifton Center at 2117 Payne St, Louisville KY, in the heart of the lively Frankfort Ave restaurant scene. Lots of parking.

WORKSHOPS: Doors open at 9 am both days. Vending on Saturday only. Some zills will be available for sale on Sunday.

CONCERT: Doors open at 7 PM. Concet at 8 PM. The Center theatre has a large stage, balcony, dressing room, lights and sound system. No videotaping w/o permission. No flash cameras. Dancers must be MEDSOK members and take the Saturday workshop to perform.

Hipnotic has been performing in the Chicago area since 2002. With a firm foundation in American Tribal Style, they have integrated African, Indian, Hip Hop, Gothic and Flamenco styles to make their performances interesting, colorful and mesmerizing. They are dedicated to bringing a fresh look to tribal style belly dance and truly believe in the power of the troupe, as well as the energy created within when dancing.

Belly Dance Workshops
10 – Noon: Floored! - A Turkish Drop Workshop (Limit 10 participants)
The Turkish Drop is a well-known belly dance move. Though it is not performed in traditional Egyptian styles of dance, it can be found in Turkish Belly Dance as well as other styles of dance such as Flamenco and many dancers add it to their fusion choreographies, and tribal stylizations. The Turkish Drop requires a combination of strength and flexibility to be done correctly to minimize injury. This workshop explores the physical requirements of performing a safe Turkish Drop.

1:30 – 3:30: Action Extraction - Cues From Choreography
How many times have you taken a workshop with a 5 minute choreography? How many times do you remember the choreography? That's what we thought - we don't remember them either! This workshop is designed to help you pull out choreography moves that you want to tribalize! Learn how to identify the beginning, middle and end of the move and ideas on HOW to end them. Use this skill to create moves from your favorite belly dancing DVDs!

Performance – 7:30 pm

Because we have had so many ask… on Sunday, October 5th, Valizan will be teaching ‘Tahtiib Basics (Egyptian marital stick dance)’ from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m…

About Valizan:
Valizan began his journey into Middle Eastern dance in 1995 when he joined The Society For Creative Anachronism, an educational group that learns about the Middle Ages by recreating it. Teachers Rayah Blackstar and Moria The Black instilled basic technique, while classes with the sublime Roula Said took him to a new plateau. Current influences include Yasmina Ramzy, Fat Chance Belly Dance, Jillina, Rachel Brice, Francisco Carranza and Aziz of Salt Lake City.

As one of few male belly dancers in North America, he has become a sought after solo performer and teacher across Canada and The U.S. for his powerful style and energy. He also heads up his own troupe, Shades Of Araby. Local appearances include Arabesque Dance Company's Asala, The International Belly Dance Conference Of Canada, Tribally Inspired, Northern Migration, The Dark Side, Face Zenna at the Royal Ontario Museum and The Bewitching Bellydance Ball. He also headlined In The Heat Of The Hafla in Milwaukee and appeared at Cabin Fever in Buffalo, NY.

He was recently honored to have been included in the 2007 Men Of Middle Eastern Dance Calendar put out by male belly dancer Jim Boz.

He began teaching American Tribal Style belly dance at Arabesque Academy in 2004, and became an apprentice in the Arabesque Dance Company in November 2005 when he began training in Egyptian Folklore with Yasmina Ramzy. He is honored to be a lead dancer in the Arabesque Dance Company Men's corps, and in the new project, The Righteous Rogues Of Raks.

Deniz’s Original Annual Charity event is BACK!
10th Annual Belly Boo Bash will be on Saturday, October 4th, 2008 in the Historic Oregon District.
Come one, come all for a great cause. Tickets are only $15, and all proceeds go to the charity. This year’s charity is the Lakota Indian Nation. Many are living in sub-standard housing, with no heat, running water or electricity. Many children don’t have a winter coat. The sad thing is that this is going on right here in America. So let’s do something to help out and come in your most ghoulish gear and be prepared to scare.

In addition to the workshop earlier that day, Valizan will be performing that night. The event will be held at the new PlayThink Learning location at 411 E Fifth Street in the middle of the Historic Oregon Distric. Hi, here are the details for the little show I want to put on when I'm back there visiting Scottsville in August. We have the Community Center (311 North 3rd St - Scottsville, KY 42164) in Scottsville booked for that evening and it has chairs enough for 80 people but I'm sure there will be more seating on the floor if people want to bring cushions and such. The show will be from 6 to 8 with time for some gathering and chatting amongst the dancers afterwards, I'll probably have the doors open at 5 or 5:30 so people can get their seats. There is a raised stage and I'm sure there's a dressing room or at least bathrooms for the dancers to get ready in (to be safe come as ready as possible), we will also be bringing the sound system (good quality home stereo).

Start: as close to 6pm as possible
End: somewhere around 8:30pm
After Show: We will have a Meet -N- Greet w/dancers.

If you are interested in performing, please email me at shahlah@clearwire.net as soon as possible with the below info (don't message me through tribe please), all styles and performance levels are welcome and must be family friendly. I might also turn this into a fund raiser for a local charity, like bring a can of food or a coat, but I have to check into what's most needed in Scottsville. I will update this thread as needed.

I will also need volunteers to help with as music runners and stage hands and a stage manager, I'll probably act as stage manager myself until I perform but I'd like to have someone else willing to help keep things running smoothly. Also send me an email to shahlah@clearwire.net to volunteer.

* Performance Name of Troupe or Soloist

* Contact Person’s legal name, phone number.

* A description in your own words of what you plan to present and the style of dance (cabaret, tribal, gothic, etc...).

* Any special prop or lighting needs (someone needs to turn the lights on or off at a certain time, someone needs to go pick up your prop after your performance is done, that kind of thing). I can't guarantee that we can accommodate these requests but I'd like to make a nice show and I love theatrical effects!

Here are the performance time limits.

Soloists: 7 minutes.
Duets and Trios: 10 minutes.
Troupes of 4 or more: 13 minutes.

Music must be on one CD clearly marked with the performer or troupe name and performance time with a note attached indicating start on or off stage and which tracks to play. Bring a backup of your music.

We won't have a formal "dancer check-in" area but I will have a space set up somewhere (most likely with the sound system that my husband will be manning) with release forms and a place to drop off your music, performers should be there at least 30 minutes before their performance time though.

Cell Phone: Usage of cell phones OK prior to the show, once it starts we ask that all Cell phones, pagers, and any other electronic device be shut off or on vibrate mode. If Cell phones have to be used please go outside to us them!

Things that will not be allowed or tolerated:
1. being disrespectful
2. Rude comments or Outburst
3. If anyone finds that this show offends anyone please leave the show and don't cause a scene.

I've only had a couple of responses from dancers wanting to sign up to perform, this will be a nice community event so please sign up to dance! Thanks and I hope this will be a great show!

Sat, Aug 30: 2 PM on the main stage: Ruric-Amari and eleven members of her Samovar Dance Theatre will present several new choreographies in the usual range of genres, including Orientale, tribal, and experimental.

Sat, Aug 30: 6:15 PM on the main stage: UT Gret, Ruric-Amari, Diana Dinacola and the Samovar Dance Theatre present all new work, both music and dance. Ut Gret and Ruric have hit their stride, and Diana and Ruric are naturals together.

August 16th Benefit & Memory Hafla for Jo Smith

The Belly Dance Community has recently lost a valued member of it dance community. Ancient Arts Dance Studio will be throwing a Benefit Hafla for Jo Smith on August 16th, 2008 in Muncie, Indiana. All proceeds will be donated to Jo's foundation choice for Autism. Jo was an active member of our community and will be missed greatly. She was widely know for her dances with the Wings of Isis.

A little early, but I want to be able to work out all the kinks and also make sure that everyone has as much notice as possible.
It's going to be the hafla to end all haflas! Right about this time, winter will have set in and we're gonna need a way to shake all that cold off!
Right now, I'm looking for interested dancers and vendors. Professional or student, it doesn't matter. This will be a relaxed atmosphere of anything goes. Well, almost anything.

Place: Gypsies of the Nile studio (tentatively) in New Albany, IN. If not there, then some where in the Southern Indiana/Louisville area.

About Deniz:
The name Deniz means “The Sea” in Turkish, and was given to her during her travels in Turkey. Over the last twenty years Deniz has sought out and studied with best teachers from all over the United States and abroad, learning Oriental Dance styles ranging from Lebanese and Egyptian, to Greek, Turkish, and even American Cabaret. Her discipline and devotion to the art has made her a nationally recognized professional among her peers. For those wishing to learn this ancient art, she is a treasure trove of knowledge and experience.

In addition to being a staff member at Sinclair College, and dance instructor at PlayThink Learning in the Oregon District, Deniz teaches seminars all over the country. Sahira Zedaré is the director of Synergy Rhythm and Dance and the Synergy Sirens in Bloomington-Normal, IL. Sahira has over twenty-five years of training and performance experience in many dance forms, beginning with jazz, tap, and modern. In recent years she has also devoted her energies to bellydance, a dance of deep beauty and boundless joy. Sahira dances to embody the music and entertain the audience, as each performance provides an opportunity to be an ambassador for this art form. Her main styles are Raqs Sharqi and Fusion, mixed with her background in jazz and modern dance, as well as new training in popping, hip hop, and West African dance.

Jazz Fusion Workshop:
10:30 am - noon

Ah, jazz dance. This was Sahira's first love, and fortunately, it fuses very well with bellydance. In this workshop students learn some basic jazz technique including large isolations and torso accents,spins, and new ways to travel across the floor. Jazz is very energetic, so you'll get a great workout along with new ways to spice up your bellydance! This workshop is for students with some dance experience.

Snap, Shimmy, Pop:
1:00 - 3:00 pm
$35 before July 19 ($40 at the door)

This technique workshop focuses on small isolations, shimmy layering, and popping/locking. It's all about your muscles! We begin with a muscle-intensive warmup, where Sahira highlights which muscles should be working for which moves. Then you'll learn a variety of sharp isolations throughout the torso,culminating in a short tribal fusion choreography. This workshop is taught at the intermediate/advanced level.

Both workshops together cost $50 before July 19 ($60 at the door)

Mira will begin with a thorough breakdown of basic isolations and will gradually increase into multiple layering designed to bewilder the brain and electrify the body. TURKISH ROMAN FUSION:
class time: 12:00noon- 2:30pm
The more you know, the more confidently you will express your unique voice. Expand your dance vocabulary, and explore the energizing 9/8 rhythm! Learn the dance in its true
form, and then fuse it to other dance elements. Turkish Rom dance is richly expressive and playful, passionate and fun. Students will dance the pure formto traditional music in 9/8 time signature. Then we will use non-traditional music to create a scintillating, original fusion choreography, drawing on the technique and knowledge of the folkloric form.

Please bring a notebook, and wear yoga pants, a simple hip sash and a comfortable top.

These concepts will be fully broken down using short combinations as examples so the student is able to get a real understanding of the mechanisms behind them.

Zoe Jakes- Zoe is a proud member of the indigo which recently was on the road touring their
show Le Serpent Rouge. She has been touring with Bellydance Superstars since
the fall of 2005 and can be seen performing on their new Tribal Fusions DVD.
Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to create Tribal
Derivations last spring, Zoe discovered she enjoyed creating music, and a new cd will be out may of 2008. When not with the Indigo, she tours with The Yard Dogs Road Show,
a cartoon circus sideshow of wacky dimension, and has been seen tearing it up
with the Extra Action Marching Band.
An innovative dancer, Zoe has been said to have her own unique take on Tribal
bellydance. She takes her influence from Art Nouveau, tango, Breakdance, and
Indian classical dance. Zoe was recently nominated for Zaghareets best
interpretive artist 2007. She loves unicorns and has never once doubted their
existence.

Liz Strong- Elizabeth Strong grew up in a tradition of dance and music. As a young girl she was inspired by the music and dancing of the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Her amazingly emotional and personal style has captivated audiences in the Bay Area and abroad. Elizabeth believes that the heart is the source of dance and that dance is an expression of our relationship with life and culture. Delsarte's work was praised by some of the greatest minds of the day, from scientists to religious scholars, musicians, and artists. Even renowned yogis mentioned it with the greatest respect. His system is a thorough examination of voice, breath, movement dynamics, line and form in their roles as expressive agents. Contemporary thought might recognize that he had uncovered the world of archetypes and universal symbolism. Unfortunately, the Delsarte system's popularity was its undoing in America. Within the span of twenty years it became a fad and then a frenzy, degenerated into a culture of studied posing, fell into disrepute, and disappeared... ...until Joe Williams decided to revive Delsarte's original system, that is. In the field of Delsarte for Middle Eastern Dance, he is now on the faculty of Morocco and the Casbah Dance Experience and has taught seminars and performed for BellyJam, Stars of the East, and Shakira in Columbus, Ohio. In 2005 he became a member of the faculty of the Dalcroze Institute at the Juilliard School in New York City, marking the first time in recent history that Delsarte has been taught as a valid and practical training method at a major school of fine arts.

Joe Williams, a resident of NYC, has been creating workshops and seminars on Delsarte since 1997. He is on the movement faculty for the Dalcroze Institute at Juilliard, and has been a guest teacher and Artist in Residence for Lori Belilove's Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation in New York. Williams has taught Master Classes for the Dance Department at Iowa State University, Wright State University, Ocean County Performing Arts Academy in NJ, Corporeal arts Inc. and at the Omaha Healing Arts Center. He has taken Delsarte to the Star Island Retreat Center for a week of dance, and used Delsarte to teach body language as a guest lecturer for communication classes at Mercy College, Bronx Community College and the School for Visual Art in Manhattan. A article in Mime Journal's 2005 special edition on Delsarte has brought him international recognition for his work in Delsarte and he has been consultant and teacher for the first scholarly thesis on the subject to be written in France, Francois Delsarte's homeland.

In the field of Middle Eastern Dance (MED) , he is on the faculty of Morocco and the Casbah Dance Experience, and has taught seminars and performed for Bellyjam, Stars of the East, Shakira in Columbus, Ohio, and special appearances with Su'ad and Farasha, in Connecticut, Vermont and New Jersey. Joe's work with Delsarte has been featured in articles in the MED publications WAMEDA (July-August 2000) and Zaghareet! (Sept - Oct 2000). His involvement in MED began in 1985 when Joe joined the Dayton Ethnic Dance Ensemble, which studied historically accurate Middle Eastern dance. In 1986 he began to work on the dance of the Whirling Dervish, which he has been performing consistently since 1994, most notably for the Institute of Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience at Rutgers Universtity and the New School University Diversity Initiative in New York.

A teacher of dance, voice and yoga, Joe has a BA in organizational and interpersonal communications and a minor in theater from Wright State University, where he was the artistic director for the "Rolling Stock" theater group, helping to write and produce touring shows that presented the talents of differently-abled students. He was a scholarship student in ballet at the Dayton Ballet and Dayton Contemporary Dance schools (becoming assistant business manager of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company for one year), and taught communication workshops for the Wright State School of Medicine for 6 years. His performing credentials include dinner theaters in the Midwest, where he danced and sang his way in numerous musicals including "George M", "Fiddler on the Roof," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," "Phantom," "Annie,"and several holiday reviews. He has also appeared as vocal soloist in oratorios with regional orchestras and with the Upper West Side Opera Association in Manhattan.

Mark your calendars!

Deniz did some soul searching, and checking to make sure there are no other local events happening that same weekend, she has decided to bring back her original Belly Boo fundraising event October 4th, 2008, along with our special guest , uber-super Valizan, teaching traditional FCBD ATS (beginning in the morning, advanced that afternoon). Sunday will be semi-private lessons in Tahtib - tell all your guys who love to dance!!! More details (location and registration) will be coming soon.

We missed her event last year since starting Belly Boo and Caravan of Hope back in the mid-90's. We're so glad she's back. ;-P I do know tickets to the show will be $15, and once all expenses are met (location rental, etc. - so any donations mean more $$ to the charity) all proceeds from Belly Boo will be going to the charity chosen. She is researching that right now, wanting the money to go to actual "good works" vs. administration (Anything over 10% administration starts getting shaky). Anyway - Suggestions welcome! As Ghandi said - "Be the change you wish to see."

TURKISH ROMAN FUSION:
class time: 12:00noon- 2:30pm
The more you know, the more confidently you will express your unique voice. Expand your dance vocabulary, and explore the energizing 9/8 rhythm! Learn the dance in its true
form, and then fuse it to other dance elements. Turkish Rom dance is richly expressive and playful, passionate and fun. Students will dance the pure formto traditional music in 9/8 time signature. Then we will use non-traditional music to create a scintillating, original fusion choreography, drawing on the technique and knowledge of the folkloric form.

Please bring a notebook, and wear yoga pants, a simple hip sash and a comfortable top.

Zoe Jakes- Zoe is a proud member of the indigo which recently was on the road touring their
show Le Serpent Rouge. She has been touring with Bellydance Superstars since
the fall of 2005 and can be seen performing on their new Tribal Fusions DVD.
Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to create Tribal
Derivations last spring, Zoe discovered she enjoyed creating music, and a new cd will be out may of 2008. When not with the Indigo, she tours with The Yard Dogs Road Show,
a cartoon circus sideshow of wacky dimension, and has been seen tearing it up
with the Extra Action Marching Band.
An innovative dancer, Zoe has been said to have her own unique take on Tribal
bellydance. She takes her influence from Art Nouveau, tango, Breakdance, and
Indian classical dance. Zoe was recently nominated for Zaghareets best
interpretive artist 2007. She loves unicorns and has never once doubted their
existence.

Liz Strong- Elizabeth Strong grew up in a tradition of dance and music. As a young girl she was inspired by the music and dancing of the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Her amazingly emotional and personal style has captivated audiences in the Bay Area and abroad. Elizabeth believes that the heart is the source of dance and that dance is an expression of our relationship with life and culture. A life-long dancer, Elizabeth formally began studying and performing Middle Eastern dance in 1996 at the age of 18.

Mira Betz- The multi-faceted career of Mira Betz is a testament to her passionate artistry and desire for continual growth. Active in theater, dance and the performing arts for 20 years, Mira Betz has become a sought after dancer, choreographer, costumer, and teacher. Nominated "Instructor of the year" by Zaghareet Magazine, Mira is a valued instuctor at prestigeous festivals and camps across the nation, as well as at the Malonga Arts Collective in Oakland California. Mira is currently facilitating the Barbary Coast Shakedown, a collaboration of Middle Eastern dance professionals pairing performance with intensive dance instruction.

We will have an alter for pictures of loved ones to be remembered as well as incense, flowers, music, food and origami offerings, and a small discussion group on ancestral and memorial rituals around the world.

Dark Side Tribal is hosting a hafla to celebrate the end of the spring semester, and you are cordially invited to attend. This will be a fun, casual party with plenty of open dancing, as well as great food and terrific company. Dancers and musicians of all stripes and styles are welcome, so come join us to welcome in the summer!

Enter Raks Mystique and embark on a trip to the streets of a Middle Eastern bazaar. To your left is a vendor hawking Lebanese food. To your right, another vendor waves to attract you to his American fare. There is art hanging everywhere!

As you stroll further, you admire the wares of a shopkeeper selling silk scarves and silver jewelry. But, before you can stop to haggle, you glimpse something up ahead through the legs of the crowd: it's a young woman dancing with fire! As you snake around the corridor to find her, you stumble upon a Turkish coffee house, complete with belly dancers to enchant you as you lounge.

If caffeine's not your thing, head over to the bar for alcoholic refreshment. There's magic here, too: Seek out the rune and tarot readers to receive a mystical prediction. Adorn the temple of your body with henna. Watch a sculptor perform live art. All the while, sounds of merriment surround you. Lose yourself in the moment as dancers whirl to the art of local musicians.

The Main Attractions:

SANDSTORM DANCE COMPANY was founded as a way to bring the theatrical art form of Middle Eastern Dance to the public at large. They promote cultural awareness and understanding through entertainment, using both music and dance to explore the rich tapestry of various Middle Eastern and Turkish cultures. Their art invites you to be part of an exotic world, if only for a night.

PUZZLE OF LIGHT is a quintet of musicians whose blended influences produce a distinctive new music that is both original and familiar; a repertoire that is traditional and experimental. Their music is a living melting pot which mixes jazz, world, and folk music in a perpetual movement of invention and transformation. Their compositions are an ode to harmony and dedicated to nature. They communicate a profoundly spiritual vision of art and music.
GROOVE ANTENNA is a Dayton-based rock band that plays really good Rock & Pop stuff, rocking out on rising bands like Muse, not-quite-classics like Weezer and Collective Soul, and tinkers with eclectic stuff like Peter Gabriel, Dépêche Mode, and even some Buddy Holly.

STONE THE MAYOR SHERIFFS is a fun-loving, energetic rock group with a bite.

EXTRATERRESTRIAL CIRCUS EXPERIMENT is a pair of skilled Object Manipulators, exploring dance, physical space and the subtle flow of support from the Earth to your uncomprehending eyes.

DJ SCORPIUS MAX plays music for people who have come to the party to dance. He skillfully spins everything from Deep House to Reggae Dancehall, Tribal House to Hip Hop, R&B to Broken-Beat, Progressive to Vocal. Max believes that Music unites the world and that there is a spiritual component particular to House Music.

CEDARLAND is Dayton's own authentic taste of Lebanon. They offer everything from hummus to falafel, kafta to tabbouleh, and a bakery case filled with pastries, olives, and stuffed grape leaves. Located at 4515 Linden Ave. Phenomenal Middle Eastern food at a very reasonable price.

RAW PASSION is a vegetarian, vegan and raw foods bistro located in the 2nd Street Public Market in downtown Dayton. They are passionate about good food, natural health, and environmental responsibility. They offer food that satisfies a number of dietary concerns, including gluten-free and dairy-free options. They use locally grown and organic foods whenever possible, and use biodegradable and compostable dishes and flatware.

CAFFEINE is a local coffee bar also located in the 2nd Street Public Market. They offer orgnic espresso drinks & gourmet brewed coffees, as well as coffe by the pound.

Hafla and Workshop with Mystic Lotus

On Saturday, April 12th, Lorain County Bellydance is hosting a Hafla at 7:30. We would love to have people come and dance! The cost is $8.00 if you come to watch, and FREE If you dance. We will be hosting a workshop with Mystic Lotus the next day at 1:00 till 5:30. It will The cost is $40.00, and you can preregister by sending a paypal payment to melissa@melissalopez.net. Come one; come all to Muncie, Indiana, on Feb 23rd and March 29th for our Hafla at Carenza's Caravan Belly Dance Studio. Dancing and music will start at 8pm and usually runs until the performances cease....The night consists of a great, respectful, belly loven' audience, food, live music featuring Il Troubadore of Indianapolis (feel free to bring drummers), open dancing, and performances! If you are interested in performing, please give me a buzz at 765-639-3581 so I can place you on the line-up and help with directions. We would love to have as many performers as possible! I hope to see new faces on the 23rd and the 29th. Our 29th Hafla is very special as our troupe leader and studio owner, Carenza bint Asya, will be moving away with her family. Tribal Fire will be hosting an evening of Belly Dance benefiting Akron Children's Hospital on Saturday, January 26th at Wooster High School. The show will feature local belly dance soloists and troupes including Gypsy Soul, Angela Prato, Midnight Soleil, Kelli Belly and more.

Tickets are $10 presale and $12 at the door, they can be purchased at Beuhler's in Wooster beginning December 31st
The entire cost of the tickets will be donated to Akron Children's Hospital.

MODROM BELLY DANCE
Modrom is short for Modern Romani. The name reflects its true nature: a “gypsy” dance: a dance that absorbs elements from different forms, melding them together into a unique concoction that is completely its own nature. The name also reflects the emotionally charged aspect of the form, where musicality and theatrical delivery are as important as any other component of technique. It is foremost a blend of Egyptian raqs sharqi, Romani, and modern jazz dance. It is also flavored by Indian, Ballet, Spanish, and Turkish dance.

“I look to the Romani people as my inspiration. They incorporated little bits of what they loved from all the cultures they traveled through and then created something completely their own. We may not be Rom, but we can try to dance with as much passion, spirit, and fearlessness as they do. In this genre, we cobble together a completely individual and unique message. We expose our soul and gaze defiantly outward from our place of power. Under the stage lights, we escape our birth and are only what we create.” -Kitiera

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This workshop will begin with technique and drills for Modrom. A short break down of music theory and musicality follows, and the day ends with combinations and choreography. Bring finger cymbals! You may wish to bring a yoga mat for the warm up. Dress to sweat! (yoga/ active wear is recommended) *also recommended to dress in layers that can be paired down as you get warmed up.

KITIERA
Raised in Lexington, KY, Kitiera's 15 year journey with Middle Eastern Dance has led her across the US. She was a popular performer and instructor in Seattle, WA before moving to Berkeley, CA in 2006 to study intensely at the Suhaila Salimpour School of Dance. She is currently certified level II in Suhaila's format, an instructor at the Salimpour studio, and a member of the Suhaila Dance Company and Bal Anat.
