saw the shirts today!

they have not been printed on yet, but i saw one trial version printed,
and the actual blank shirts. they are really nice quality, but run big.
you will need to wash them on hot inside out to shrink them down.
there were some odd sizes where we had to go with conventional cotton,
but almost all are organic. the design looks AWESOME!
the front logo wil be about 9.5 - 10 inches wide, the back about 8.5 inches wide.
the shirts heading to the WWs will be going out tomorrow or Monday
in time for next Friday. i have recieved tons of payments, but keep 'em coming!
still need an addy from Larry Miller, Penguin (or GAMH confirmation) and KC Dan.

Alright Minions, the order is in, 73 shirts! I hope you get me lots of pics with you in your shirts if you cannot come to the GAMH. There is a pic of the new front image in the gallery. The printer thought there was too much white to look good before.

Texans, you ROCK. I am shipping 23 shirts to the WWs. There are enough of you for your own reveal in TX next time they come around!

We were able to give all 7 of the guys Ts of their own (which they can keep or donate to Dooda to sell) plus Jeff''s family, Anne who did the artwork, Freddie who is backing this project financially, and 5 more that are being donated to the merch table in hopes of putting a few extra dollars in the boys pockets,
maybe a dinners worth. I am amazed at how many concious business there are! This is a green project for sure and the cost is not going to be to much more at all. I am waiting for samples now so that I can ensure that we are getting a kick ass shirt, but I hope that everyone is happy with what our super kind artist, Anne http://www.geckographics.com/ did for us out of her love for Jeff and the band. I for one am exstatic!!!!!!!!!!

i am looking into companies for printing.
the one i was going to use does not have a purple option.
we are thinking of havin a black or purple option depending o the amount ordered.
i am now looking for a printing company.

the bigger picture

a lot of things were brought to my attention that i never considered.
i am trying to brainstorm on how to make this benefit the boys.
i know it can be done.
if we end up printing more to do this,
we would need an original logo and design.

i personally LOVE this logo with the lady in the moon and am thinking if it's ok with
April that i'd like to get some things printed on cafe press and figure out how to benefit her
for this too.

for a bigger project i am starting by coming up with one of his best lines and formulating an idea.

Monsoon has led entire contest until a day ago, when emma received a surge from mass worldwide random emails to people from corporate lists. oh my -- what a hoot to watch....jeff is squished on the couch alongside timmy [bo seems to be taking up the most space!] he looks like a little boy....with facial hair and rockstar shades.

i freaking love his comment about different soups for different needs and then pulls out the oldie but goodie cold soup favorite, "gazpacho. enh? enh?" cracks me up everytime.

the sound is rather hard to hear on my computer -- not sure if it's because they don't know how to use their mo boogie mics correctly or if it's the constant sound of the whirring fan on my shitty computer that's hindering the sound or if it's just poor sound quality at the get go. anyone else have this issue?

anyhoo -- i also thought i'd write my idea for the miller time t-shirt slogan [like "i have a cup..."] okay, here goes:

It's bands like New Monsoon that keep me from becoming jaded.
Just as I was jonesing for something new and different, I discovered New Monsoon through the Greatest Marin Guitarist contest I conducted a few weeks ago.

One of the nominees was 37-year-old Jeff Miller, who lives in Forest Knolls and is New Monsoon's electric guitarist and singer. The band's keyboard player, Phil Ferlino, lives down the road from him in the San Geronimo Valley.

I'd never heard a band quite like New Monsoon before, a group that mixed bluegrass with strains of Indian classical music, that featured a banjo that sounded like a sitar, that had tabla and timbales players in the rhythm section, creating a kind of raga-style rock accented sometimes by a didgeridoo.

"It was pretty eclectic," Miller admits, refusing to categorize New Monsoon's evolving sound. "There are a lot of different kinds of good music."

After playing such high profile gigs as Bonnaroo, the Austin City Limits Festival, the Fillmore, Red Rocks Amphitheater and the Big Summer Classic with String Cheese Incident, Michael Franti, Umphrey's McGee, the Yonder Mountain String Band and Keller Williams, New Monsoon was named "emerging artist of the year" in 2003 by Jambase.com.

The band plays the Harmony Festival in Santa Rosa on June 8, and its fifth album, "New Monsoon V," is due in mid-June. It was produced, mixed and engineered by legendary Grateful Dead producer John Cutler, who just so happens to be Miller's Forest Knolls neighbor.

"That's another amazing thing about Marin County: You can move next door to somebody like John Cutler and he ends up working on your record," Miller says, laughing. "He's a genius and one of the nicest guys I've ever met."

New Monsoon heads in a new direction with this album. After its tabla player and percussionist left to raise families, the band, now with five members, is moving forward with a cleaner, cooler, more stripped-down sound.

"We're more focused now," Miller says, speaking by balky cell phone as he and his bandmates - acoustic guitarist and banjo player Bo Carper, drummer Marty Ylitalo, bassist Ron Johnson and keyboardist Ferlino - rumbled through the upper Midwest in a van, heading for a gig at Summer Camp, a huge music festival in Illinois where New Monsoon is one of the featured bands on Sunday afternoon.

"Because we're a five-piece band now, we don't have as much of a world sound," he says. "We're exploring our improvisation more and concentrating on our songwriting and vocals."

Miller and Carper, who was Miller's classmate at Penn State, formed New Monsoon after moving to Marin in the late '90s, playing some of their first gigs at Sweetwater in Mill Valley and Cafe Amsterdam in Fairfax.

"I love it here a lot," says Miller, a native of Pittsburgh. "I value being at home. It's such a wonderful, beautiful place."

Carper gave the group its name when he was working with troubled teenage boys at Full Circle, the now-defunct residential treatment facility in Bolinas, during the El Nino storms of 1997 and '98, when, he told friends, every day seemed to bring "a new monsoon."

I was won over after listening to the band's last two albums, "Live at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival," and "The Sound," produced by original Santana drummer Michael Shrieve at In the Pocket Studio in Forestville and Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco.

On those CDs, the hooky melodies of the band's original songs and the rich three-piece vocal harmonies got my attention as much as the high-caliber musicianship. I was happy to hear that those qualities are even more in evidence as New Monsoon enters this new phase in its career.

"We're doing a lot of harmony singing and finding our voices, which is what we've always wanted to do," Miller says. "We feel we're really grasping that now. That's the aspect of the music I'm most excited about."
