It's deep winter. The days are short. The wind is brisk. You still haven't lost that hangover from New Years. And to top it all off, it's cold out. Damn cold. Bitter bone deep cold. The full frostbiting power of 55 degrees of awful Southern California Winter. With St. Patrick's Day a full two months away, the prospects for a good time in the dark hours of winter seem slim.

But in San Diego, something's happening. Something that's been happening for hundreds, nay, over a thousand years! When things looked their worst in the middle of the bitter winter months, our ancestors knew what needed to be done to get through until spring.

They partied.

And on January 10th, you too can party like it's 1499. Twelfth Night Feast and Midwinter Revel in San Diego invites you to celebrate the tradition of reveling away the winter doldrums by feasting til you're full, drinking til you burst and then laughing til you pee!

The Merry Misfits of Doom will be on hand to supply the "laughing til you pee" portion of the evening. In fact this year, in addition the Misfits, Twelfth Night will feature more entertainers than ever!
No, they're not street gangs from days gone by, but performance artists who will be appearing this weekend at the sixth annual Big Bear Renaissance Festival to entertain in all their wild and merry ways.

And this year, you can get a double dose of the fun, for the festival is running two straight weekends - Saturday and Sunday and Aug. 18 and 19.

Reflecting the era of Queen Elizabeth I, the faire is a re-creation of an English summer faire.

Guests can experience a live joust, strolling entertainers including jugglers and belly dancers, stage performances by musicians and singers, handmade crafts, and food and drink reflecting the times.

An archery tournament and a Midsummer Fairy Forest Children's Area are among the many other attractions of this year's festival.

Special guest entertainers are the Poxy Boggards, touted as a "drinking group with a singing problem," known for their rollicking and bawdy songs.

Another festival highlight will be the comedy troupe Merry Misfits of Doom, who will perform their Stage Show Spectacular this Saturday and Sunday only.

The show encourages heavy audience participation in bringing the show alive.

"Our show is a lot like `Whose Line Is It Anyway' meets `Jackass.' It's not your same old boring improv," troupe member Wylie Withers said. "We put the audience in the role of quality control. Everything we do is based on what they give us for suggestions."

If the troupe entertains and generates laughs from scenes initiated through audience suggestions, the Merry Misfits are rewarded with beer, Withers said.

"We raise a big toast with the audience and get them all cheering and having a good time with us," he said.

But if the scenes don't generate the laughs, the Misfits are doomed to punishment.

"When you leave you should feel you've been at a really good party with all your best friends, and you know all the inside jokes," Withers said.

The faire will be at Pedersens Mill on Big Bear Lake's North Shore, 39115 Rim of the World Drive, Fawnskin, behind the fire station.

More information: (909) 585-7825.

The festival runs 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.

Hello and thank you for being such great friends and fans of the Merry Misfits of Doom. You are all a big part of the show and the success of this group. I cherish the memories of doing shows for you, of your laughs and smiling faces. This letter is going to address what has happened the past few months to the group and to me, in hopes answer any questions and quell any rumors.
Last October my family experienced a very sad event. My daughter and her mother were involved in a very serious car accident in which my daughter was seriously injured and her mother passed away. Needless to say this was all very sudden and changed our lives greatly. I suddenly found myself being a single father through very tough circumstances; my daughter found herself having her entire life changed. I love my daughter very much, I love being her father. The choice was a simple and easy one, but required some huge changes in our lives. Choices had to be made; things had to be put aside. The Merry Misfits was one of the later.
Now that things have settled down, it’s time to slowly start getting back to things. Getting back to what I love to do. Making you people laugh and feel good. Back to performing. Back to the Merry Misfits. But first I must address a few things.
The most important being this: I could not have made it to where I am today without the support of my fiancée Anna. She has made all of this possible through her love and strength of character. Baby, you are so much stronger than you think you are. I love you and thank you with all of my heart. And I apologize now for whatever dumb things I will do on stage in the future. I love you.
Thank you Wylie, for waiting patiently for things to get settled and never knowing when or even if things were going to pick up again. For the asinine things that I said when I was tired and didn’t know what was going to happen. For taking care of business while I dealt with personal issues. For not replacing me when there was doubt if I were to return. For being a friend through it all. Thank you. And I apologize now for whatever dumb things I will do on stage in the future. I love you.
Finally, but in no means leastly, you, our friends and fans. For those of you who knew what had happened and all your kind words, it mattered. It made a difference. For those of who did not know, thank you. Thank you for allowing us to entertain you. Thank you coming back time and time again, to challenging us to become even better performers. Thank you for all the support, suggestions, and silliness that is so needed in our lives.

Thank you for laughing.

Sincerely,
Greg “Cuter Than Wylie” Jones

P.S. And I apologize now for whatever dumb things I will do on stage in the future. I love you.

Hey gang,

This is serious...... this is awfull ..... and this has to stop NOW..............

If you aren't aware..... there is a thief among us at faire...

PLEASE lock up your belongings.... dont' leave things unattended... keep an eye on your booth, your things, your bank and your personal possesions. When you go to morning meeting... please leave a guard at your booth / area that you TRUST.

Advice from Dwight: take a sharpey and mark your name or guild name on ALL your furniture that you have backstage.... all of it.

So far this is what I know that has been taken.. AND I'll tell you what I want to do about it.

At morning meeting last Saturday .. a corset was stolen out of the top of my bag..... muted olive green and gold floral patterned satin...

it was borrowed for this faire season... it belongs to Gay Linn and I am literally sick that it has gone missing.... 100 DOLLAR REWARD TO WHOMEVER GETS IT BACK TO ME NO QUESTIONS ASKED
( I HAVE NOT TOLD HER YET... I am working up the courage.. and I am hoping someone will " find it " so I can get it back before I have to break this sickening news to her )

ALSO STOLEN :
a bodice and skirts ( out of bags at morning meeting Saturday morning)
a table and chairs ( from guild ghetto from Puritans)
signs and banners....
$ 800.00 DOLLARS was stolen from Guest Services
ATM cards were stolen from Comedia members
the 30 road signs from faire
a ren faire car logo magnet
a four part skirt stolen out of a car in the parking lot
Someone tried - and failed - to steal a mug out of Roxanne's hand Sunday morning....( I know! wtf?) but she didn't get a good look at him.

::::::::::::::::if I have left anything out please comment here on the tribe post or to me so I can add it to this list so we all have an idea of how rampant this is and so we have a ballpark figure of the numbers we're looking at to replace some items per the raffle - details below!::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Security has been notified.. I have tried to spread the word to every Guild Master- booth owner, and vendor.

I regard this community of faire folk as my family..................I haven't seen this kind of behavior...ever...

ONE PERSON HAS ALLREADY BEEN REMOVED..............that was the weekend prior to this last..... but it is still going on... and we as a family need to be on our guard and help get this awful element OUT of the family.

SOLUTION # 1 :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

We are going to hold a RAFFLE ......to recover the cost I'll need to replace Gay Linn's corset...
............AND ALL MONEYS ABOVE THAT will go to the people who have also had items stolen to try and recoupe thier losses as well.

..........and by WE, I mean Me and anyone else that wants to help or donate items.

::::::::: Included in the raffle :::::::::
a batch of THE COOKIEs (tm),
one of my POUND CAKES
an item from Adrew's booth ( details to come)
a pair of juggling sticks and juggling lessons
a Gift Certificate for a free Deluxe facial from Skin Beauty Bar - a 100$ value (and yes' that's me)
and other items to be nameD later..........

Ticket costs and The Date the Raffle Winner will be announced - will be announced at Morning Meeting this coming Saturday. ( bad grammar I know...)

I rarely borrow things and when I do I treat my friends items with care and respect..... to have this happen to something so dear to me..... and borrowed from someone so sweet to me.... has made me lose sleep and feel horrible.....

I don't like to think that this close knit community has a bad apple in it..... and they just have to be stopped......

Thank you .. any help advice and information will be greatly appreiciated.

Stay safe everyone.. Liisa

So the 2006 Northern California Renaissance Faire has wrapped up another season. This was a huge year for the Misfits there! We were able to accomplish far more than the goals that we had set for ourselves in the months leading up to opening weekend.

Major heartfelt thanks and props the NorCal staff and crew. Particularly our boss, Molly Drew for her continued support and our Stage Manager Orion for putting up with us on a daily basis and helping provide us with the best performance space we could ask for.

Our Doomettes simply rock. Thanks to Tess for auditioning and casting the new ones and to Megan for not only keeping us in line, but at the same time forming the Doomettes into a coherent troupe . Without Megan, the show simply wouldn't be what it is. AJ, CJ and Shelby really stepped up into the new roles, nailed what we were looking for and helped the Doomettes become a bigger and more integral part of the show. Many good times lie ahead...

We made a lot of new friends. Friends that we consider part of the family. We're grateful to you all and are sad that we don't get to see you on a weekly basis anymore...

And, of course, the fans. We can honestly say that without you, we wouldn't have a show. You are such an integral part of our show that any success we find with it must be attributed in great part to you. We can't describe how fulfilling it is to see your faces time and time again in the audience.

But enough mushy stuff. How about some highlights from this year's run?

- Sharing the stage with our boss as she pulls out a "2007 Merry Misfits of Doom" contract to threaten us with.
- Christ coming down off the cross to kick Greg and Eric Muller in the junk. Repeatedly.
- Having a full weekend of shows with special guests and having it go awesome.
- The Impossible: 12 Dooms at once.
- the young lady who nonchalantly walked her tortilla all the way up the center aisle through a hail of flying corn and twinkies to make sure that she hit Wylie
- the new Doomettes!
- The one showing of the new Doom "Tossing the Salad"
- Having a whole audience scream "Yes!" when we asked "Do you want to toss our salad?!"
- the barefoot drunken 3 way Character Switch on a mousetrap laden stage during the Drunk Show
- the seven year old who finished a sentence with "because they're bitches!"
- Nut Cheese for Squeaky sans pants
- the Faire debut of Bill Shakespeare's Iambic Jubilee at the FoF garden stage
- nights in Mollywood

I'm sure there are more! Thanks again for a great 2006 run!!

Well! We're so very glad you asked!

Stoked were we when so many talented people wholeheartedly agreed to be special guests in our shows this weekend. What could we possibly do to top the awesomeness? How could the Merry Misfits of Doom one up THEMSELVES? Well, do what we've always done during our shows: Dooms.

But wait, you say, that's not different at all! You do Dooms every show!!

Of course we do. That's the point. It's one of the things about our show that we love and think is very unique and fun.

But I'll tell you one thing, we've never done EVERY DOOM WE HAVE ALL AT ONCE, now have we?

Until this weekend of course.

Let's face it, Girl Drink Drunks this is your night! So put down that Budwieser and the Jack and pick up the Pink Squirrel with the purple twizzle stick in the hollowed out pineapple surrounded by a rainbow of umbrellas, it's time for Dessert Drinks!

Okay, so apparently people wants to be knowing the coordinatin' of the drinkin'. So Wylie's here to help.

True, it was a tough decision to marry a Drink Theme to such a vast body of eats as "BBQ". But really, what's more American than BBQing? So, on that thought, the Drink Theme for Weekend One is...

AMERICANA
Whiskey, Bourbon and SoCo! Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, et al.

American beers! I'd suggest any beer that has a redneck American kinda feel. Budweiser pops to mind, but I won't be insulting by suggesting it. Also, Jack Daniels punches and wine coolers and such apply.

**Standard Disclaimer**
This is NOT a booze buffet. Bring your own damn booze. We're just coordinating a theme so that all the personal booze for the weekend is compatible with everyone elses'! If you party with Jack and Jim and get caught running naked through site singing Johnny Cash at the top of your lungs, it's no one's fault but YOURS. You will of course be commended on your musical tastes and the sway factor of personal endowments (if applicable), but responsibility is your own.

Saturday, January 14, 2006 The extreme improv-vaudeville troupe The Merry Misfits of Doom will be joining Marlowes Shadowe at the Coffee Depot in the Shadowes hometown of Riverside, CA. On Saturday, January 14th, fans will have two chances to see these two wildly popular groups share a stage for the first time.

The Merry Misfits of Doom will present their most popular show, The Stage Show Spectacular! A world premier every time, this show is lovingly handcrafted right before audience members very eyes, using only the most silly and amusing conventions made freshly available from their suggestions. One of the most unique improv shows around, The Stage Show Spectacular! asks the audience to take the role of quality control, rewarding or punishing the Misfits based on the comedic brilliance of each scene. Rewards are given in the form of Beer and the Misfits raise a hardy toast with their audience. However, should the audience be forced to sit through an unfulfilling, annoying, bland, pointless, or just plain stupid piece of theatre, the Misfits are Doomed, and are immediately and resoundingly punished.

The Shadowes will be performing a new expanded version of their popular original show Top Five Tragedies of William Shakespeare. Do you like blood? Do you like death? Do you like Shakespeare? Even if you answered no to all of the above, youll love Marlowes Shadowes Top Five. Youll get Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, and, of course, Shakespeares bloodiest play, Titus Andronicus, all in one 40 minute sitting.

There will be two shows that night, at 8pm and 10pm, with the Misfits commandeering the first half of each. Expect madness, mayhem and hilarity as these two comedic powerhouses join forces for one night. Tickets are $15 presale and $10 at the door.

We were fortunate to meet a lot of very cool and talented people this past year and have only the highest expectations for more of the same in 2006.

And do we have a lot of exciting things planned for 2006! Look for at least two more original shows, including a variety type show that will bring together some of your favorite stunt, comedy, magic and musical acts for an evening of mayhem. Doom University will also be coming in 2006 with weekly classes for both the improv newbie and veteran.

I know this is a little long, but there *is* a point. This is actually more of a request/announcement, but you need the Setup to know the Why...

*The Setup:
Monday. A drizzly, grey, dark October 24 in the Year of Our Lord, 2005.

After one of the harsher weekends the Merry Misfits of Doom had had to endure, they went in search of the one thing that could replenish their spirits and brighten their moods.

Buffet. Chinese.

Throughout all of Burbank the intrepid gluttons searched. High and low. Near and far. Asian cuisine abounded, but fate and will of others kept the elusive buffet from their plates. High into the Santa Susana mountains they traveled. Down came they again after flipping a bitch. And lo! There! Next to the Kmart that Time forgot rose a sign: CHINESE SUPER BUFFET.

A great shout of joy went up from the hungry, annoyed, and downtrodden Misfits. The MisfitMobile(TM) was parked, slightly askew. Doors were slammed. Two crazy-eyed men sprinted across the parking lot into the retro 80s Asian interior.

And there, laid before them, was the largest Chinese Buffet ever seen. The Great Wall wasn't the only big thing coming out of China. Row upon row of oriental delicacies. Chicken, tofu, beef, squid, octopus, fish, shrimp, sushi, noodles, soups, sauces and dumplings. All around the Misfits, Chinese diners conversed and laughed and ate. And so the Misfits, with the help of a smiling, non-English speaking waiter, gorged themselves.

As the Wylie Misfit sat there staring off in the distance digesting, his eyes landed upon a great mountainous heap of a glowing viridian substance. His eyes stared at this monstrosity for some time, as comprehension eluded his carb soaked synapses. Understanding began to crawl it's way through his mind, and an evil thought was born. Being, generally, of the asshole persuasion, the Wylie Misfit gave voice to this thought:

"Hey Greg. How much money would it take for you to eat all that wasabi?"

The Greg Misfit paused, pepper chicken held in stasis. The Greg Misfit looked back over his shoulder towards Mount Wasabi. The Wylie Misfit, after much study, had already settled upon $4000 as a reasonable amount to do something that awful and malicious to his bowels. Stunned was he when he heard the Greg Misfit reply:

"I don't know, couple a hundred maybe."

Silence descended upon the Super Buffet. Chinese diners paused, chopsticks akimbo. The friendly, non-English speaking waiter made a choking sound and dropped a tray. Somewhere, a cute Asian waitress fainted and was ignored.

The Wylie Misfit, with extreme care and kindness for the man that makes up 2/3s of the Merry Misfits of Doom, saw before him a stupid stunt that would not only be extremely entertaining, but also give the Greg Misfit some spending cash. The Wylie Misfit said to the Greg Misfit:

"Then behold! It shall be done! We shall invite all of our closest friends and nearest acquaintances! We shall all give unto you a small monetary donation, that you may amass a couple hundred bucks. And we shall toast and feast and watch you consume and conquer Mount Wasabi!"

And the Misfit Greg smiled and tried to contain the giggle rising inside him that was equal parts fear and gas.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

*The Follow Through
Okay, so Greg will eat a crap load of wasabi for charity. HIS charity.

So, obviously, there are a few questions we want some answers on. First off, are there any doctors who want to attend the Great Wasabi Challenge? Can Greg die from consuming that much wasabi? If we put toilet paper in the freezer now, will it be cold enough?

We want to coordinate and set a date for this. Preferably before Christmas so Greg has extra money for presents and the like for his family. Would you (yes you, the person reading this) pay $10 or so to eat some Chinese buffet and donate another $10 - $20 to watch Greg eat an inhuman amount of wasabi?

We also want to tape this. We both have a feeling that this is going to be very funny. Or very disturbing. So we're right on par with a Misfit event either way. It'll be happening in Burbank, probably at that restaurant, which was pretty damn good I might add.

So please! Let's have some feedback!

I know Celtic Invasion was this past weekend. I know the Theme Weekend for this weekend is a masquerade kinda thingie and we should be guzzling more wine than a 40 something career gal at a Sex in the City convention. I KNOW. But that doesn't stop me from announcing this week's Drink Theme...
[dramatic pause]
*THE EMERALD ISLE*

Guinness by the gallons, Bailey's Jameson's, Bushmills, Harps, and anything else you can make with something green and/or Irish.

And this week is Audience Participation Week for the Drink Theme. Whenever you open/pour a fresh drink or shot, you need to make a statement or toast in the worst possible Irish accent you can muster. If it's before quiet hours, it should be loud and drunken as well.

And a punch in the arm for anyone not calling me "laddy" this weekend. :P

Usual disclaimer: Bring your own damn booze. Share with others if you like. But this is simply a coordination of the alchohol that is coming to Faire this weekend ANYWAY. If you drink too much Irish whiskey and get in a Irish bar fight, that's your own damn Irish problem, laddy!

The Tropical Drink Theme went over so well last week, that as I write this, Tuesday around 3:20, many people who participated have sworn off drinking.

But that'll change by this weekend, so this weekend's Drink Theme is:

*CLASSY COCKTAIL HOUR*

What does this mean? Vodka drinks, martinis, mai tais and anything else that seems to mean "Cocktail Hour" to you. Bring your booze, talk, socialize and with some classy classy mofos!
