ShimmyCon: Workshops and Show October 24 & 25

October 24th and 25th, at 10 Old Man's Trail in ManitouSprings (Tajine Alami restaurant)

ShimmyCon is a two-day event designed to give both currentand new students of all forms of belly dance the opportunity to studywith and meet different instructors, learning more of what theColorado Springs area dance community has to offer through eightworkshops and an evening show.

The website includesfull workshop descriptions, instructor bios, and preregistrationinformation, including both a mail-in registration form and an onlinepreregistration system with payment via Paypal. Advance show ticketpurchase (via will-call) are also available online.

Directions:
The Florence High School is an easy drive from Colorado Springs: Come south on Hwy 115, take Hwy 50 west to the first stoplight (Hwy 67.) Turn left on Hwy 67, and the school is 1 ½ miles on the left. Hwy 67 has a sharp turn in it, please be careful. The school sits in the middle of large empty fields. Enter the school through the front doors, and please don't park in the bus lane. Dancers and vendors park in the North parking lot, and may enter through those doors.

Summer is here, and it's time for Manitou Street Performances!

Mizmar Madness and Springs Oasis tribal style belly dance troupes
will be performing as part of the street performance program this
summer in Manitou Springs.

Where:
Shoshone Spring park, next to Manitou Jacks jewelry store,
814 Manitou Avenue, Manitou Springs
**this is an outdoor location -- if it is raining, we won't
be dancing

When:
1:00pm – 4:00pm on the following Saturdays:
May 30
June 13
July 18

There will be a number of 10-15 minute performances within the
1:00pm – 4:00pm timeframe. It is a very casual, family friendly
environment.

A good opportunity to go out for lunch, then walk thru Manitou
afterwards! This is a free event (although tips are greatly
appreciated).

Time: 6:45 (before the 7:00 bout) and 7:45 (half-time)

July 27th - Christina King workshop!!

Apologies for the short notice on this one! It's been one of those summers. :) I am extremely excited to be hosting Christina King from Chicago's fabulous Blue Lotus for two workshops on Sunday July 27th. Here are the workshop times and descriptions:

10:00 am—12:00 pm
Wearing your Prop: Skirt Variations and Combinations for Tribal Improv
Learn how to use your skirt to create beautiful shapes with the basic improv vocabulary as well as several combinations designed specifically for skirt work. Please bring a skirt at least 12 yards at the hem. The bigger, the better! (There will be a few skirts available for borrowing at the workshop if you don’t own one yet.)

1:00—3:00 pm
Switch it up! - Leading and Following on Both Sides of the Tribal Improv Formation:
Christina has created her own system for switching the lead in group improv from left, to right, to center, and back again. Drill the basic tribal improv moves leading with the left side and see how much you can do for your dance by honoring both sides of the stage, the audience, and your body. This class is designed for those who have a basic general knowledge of ATS.

Workshops will be held at The Studio Dance and Art Center (3020 W. Colorado Ave, Colorado Springs). Cost is $25 per workshop or $45 for both.

Kara Nomadica CD update!!!

Good morning everyone!
We are pleased to announce that we are going through the final bits of recording and editing before we send our tracks off to be mastered and mass-produced! Hopefully we will have the LP ready to sell sometime in April.

We are very grateful to those of you who have prepaid the LP for being so patient with us. We really tried to get this thing finished this winter, and we apologize that this didn't happen--we want to provide you with the best possible recordings, so instead of rushing the album out we decided to postpone it.
That being said, we are VERY pleased with the results so far and will be delivering to you a professional product.

Once we release the album we will be putting together a CD release party and will be available for touring around later this year.
If you are putting together a bellydance workshop weekend somewhere and want a great live band drop us a line!!!

Another bulletin will be sent out the day we send the tracks out with a more precice release date!

The Third Annual Rocky Mountain Tribal Soiree is seeking student and professional dancers of American Tribal Style (ATS) or Tribal Fusion belly dance to perform. The purpose of the event is to build community among dancers and provide an opportunity to showcase the talent among Tribal Style belly dancers in the Rocky Mountain region.

This Wednesday night, December 12, Pikes Peak Derby Dames will be hosting a fundraiser Skate-A-Thon with 50% of the proceeds going to TESSA.

The event will take place from 7-9pm at the Colorado Springs City Auditorium. This is a FREE event. Attendees are encouraged to sponsor their favorite roller girl to skate laps for their donations.

Big Changes

Hey everyone,
For those of you haven't heard, I have some big news:
I am getting promoted at work to a very full time job, and it means I can't continue teaching belly dance, at least for the immediate future.

It was a very difficult decision since, as many of you know, teaching belly dance has been a major source of joy in my life for several years now. However, my deepest passion is for equal rights, respect for diversity, religious freedom through separation of church and state, and civic engagement. That's basically the mission statement of the organization I work for and I have the opportunity for promote these things in Colorado Springs and the surrounding region.

The fabulous and talented Kari Espelien and Amy Pacheco will take over teaching my classes in about the same time slots at the Studio on West Colorado Ave. We will jointly release their schedules in the next couple of weeks, which will start in September.

Student Night - Also, the three of us will sponsor a Student Night on Saturday September 29th at the Studio. Please mark your calendars. It will be a little different from the usual. We'll all sit in a circle on the floor, with drummers and recorded music, and encourage each other to get up and dance. There will be a couple of group choreographies.

I want to thank you all for contributing to a welcoming and supportive belly dance community - and for being such wonderful friends. I am really going miss seeing many of you as often. I will continue dancing with Mizmar Madness, though I will probably have to miss some of our performances. I'll drop in to classes here and there to keep my shimmy in shape.

Colorado Springs Diversity Festival looking for performers & vendors

A FREE family friendly event - downtown Colorado Springs on Saturday August 18 from 10am to 6pm

Hello all,

I am a member of the Colorado Springs Diversity Forum which is putting on a big community culture and diversity festival in downtown Colorado Springs on Saturday August 18 from 10am to 6pm. There will be performances in 3 differrent venues - the bandshell at Acacia Park, the City Auditorium and the City's portable Show-Mobile.

They are looking for performers (dancers, drummers, etc) from all different cultures and communities. Since we have such a strong belly dance community here, it'd be a shame for us not to be represented. I'm not sure what, if any, pay is involved. Why I Hate The Monkey

OK. I rented a copy of the movie version of the story that makes me freak out about that monkey.

Anybody want to host a viewing? My house isn't guest friendly as we have 2 recliners, a bunch of animals and a grumpy guy living there.

It's the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version of "Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders", a complete crap movie but it's spectacularly funny.

The story that actually creeped me out was in Stephen King's book Skeleton Crew. It was the one called The Monkey. Ugh. That one and The Mist were 2 incredibly horrible stories. If you haven't read that book then you should. It's NOT like the majority of his other ones (incredibly long and drawn out-like being forced to wade through a thigh-high swamp).

What is Shimmy for the Cure! Colorado (SFCC):

SFCC is a fundraiser for Breast Cancer that highlights and focuses on Belly Dancing. Each year there is a nationally-acclaimed instructor sponsored for two days of workshops, along with an evening concert.

Swallow Hill Music Association sponsors SFCC under it's "Community Partnership" program; providing space for both workshops and concert, with a professional stage, lighting and sound. For more information on Swallow Hill, please see their website at www.swallowhilmusic.com

In 2007, we are very excited to be sponsoring Jim Boz of San Diego, California in his premier appearance here in Colorado!. Interupting you lovely ladies to say hello and I had a lot fun in Evergreen and I hope to see ya in July. I'll be back for vacation the first week in July in the Springs area before I head up to the mountains. Any Shingdigs I can watch while I'm there? I've never been to Colorado Springs before but I wanna take my daughter to see the Zoo and Pikes Peak, Cripple Creek and the Garden of the Gods, unless there is something better for an artistic animal loving 7 year old to do, but I gotta see my bellydancers too!

I don't know yet if the rest of Benu will make it out in July, they are still working out all the scheduling, too much traveling for everyone. I hope you guys have a great time at Tribal Fest. My inventory falls in May so I can't leave work for the month. I'll live vicariously through everyone else.

As some of you already know, Kara Nomadica is working on putting together a full-length LP (probably 10-12 songs).
We have been planning on releasing a 4-5 song EP at Elevation this weekend, however Murphy's Law says "NO". We will have to release the EP on May 26th at the Boulder Creek Fesitval. We anticipate having the LP finished by Winter 2007!
However, we are rebels by nature and will rail against "the Man" when we can get away with it!
So for those who were expecting to get some music in your hands, you will! We will be giving away our first single, Arainia, at Elevation as well as at Mirage's Belly Bash (and if you can't get to either of those shows, let me know and I will send it to you).

The EP will cost a mere $5.
The LP will cost $15.
If you prepay the $15 for the LP you will have a signed-by-all-band-members copy of the LP sent to you and once the EP is out you will get the EP free!
This not only gets you free stuff and our soon-to-be famous autographs, but helps us produce the album!

Love the new pics! You all looked MAH-VELOUS!! I'm further confused, though. If the reason for wearing the T-shrts was the bare midriff issue, what was really accomplished other than covering some of your beautiful tops and arms? Was it an "In your face, we're wearing the stupid T-shirts so back off!" sort of thing? It sure was some clever cutting and wrapping!

The end result was that you all looked so beautiful, the audience probably barely noticed the shirts.

Ten Minutes Max

Next Thursday, Mizmar Madness will start a two weekend run as part of the Manitou Art Theater's show Ten Minutes Max. Here's the info from the MAT's website:

"Yes, it's back...MAT's Vaudeville Showcase! Enjoy the area's finest performing artists as they debut new work in theater, music, dance poetry, variety and comedy - in ten minutes or less. You won't believe what we have lined up for our fifth birthday! Get your tickets early!"
