It is with great sadness that I pass on the news that Caleb "Shooter" Schaber took his own life in Gerlach, NV last night.
Shooter was a long-time fixture in DPW, A freelance combat photojournalist in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and considered by many to be a (beloved) pain in the ass that refused to accept the status quo. While many here in MN never had the pleasure of meeting him, many have heard of him by reputation. My first interaction with him was online, where a reply to one of his infamous posts elicited the response, "And who are you again? That's right... nobody. Shut the fuck up and stay out of my desert." This coming from a guy that had his neck tattooed with a dotted line and the words "Cut Here" before one of his many trips to the Middle East.
There are few details right now about what happened, but everyone that knew Shooter knows that there were a lot of personal demons he's fought over the years. Regardless of the circumstances around his passing, he was a powerful figure that fought hard for his friends. Among his legendary exploits, he gained notoriety in San Francisco for protesting outside the Burning Man offices for higher wages for paid DPW staff members. By most accounts, he won that battle.
Dogspeed, Shooter. May you be in Heaven a half hour before the Devil knows you're dead...
