BWB - Cleanin' Up day

Hello !

Pics and stories from the third annual worldwide BWB Cinco de Playa clean up – including a report from a little UK cleanup...

http://www.burnerswithoutborders.org/bwbs-cinco-de-playa-worldwide-clean-up-day/

I’d like to organise a cleanup and burner gathering in Mpls/St Paul the first week of July– (no - not the fourth.. I was thinking Wed the 2nd perhaps, though) Got any suggestions for a location ?

A couple of people have already stepped forward to help get this off the ground. If anyone else is up for spending a day cleaning up a public space that’s in need of a little burner lovin’, please let me know. Perhaps we can find a place to finish off the day with a beer and even burn a little art, hoop, etc picnic, la la la.
6/15 Event @ Bedlam CANCELED

The benefit performances by the groups that were going to appear at the regional event have been canceled. This unfortunately means that the regional event performances are canceled as well. Given the timing there isn't really an option of pulling anything else together, but with the level of interest to support this event it is encouraging news for efforts to stage an event at a later date.

If you have any questions please feel free to send me a message.

Peace,
Zed

Hey. Sounds like there were a few of us going out. Just wondering what people's plans are at the moment. And mey be a little about ride sharing. I'm heading to Black River Falls early to help with setup, but I know that Anusha is probably looking for a ride out--she's coming back with us.

Who's going?

How and when are you getting there?

Got space?

Need a ride?

Talk amongst yourselves...

Greetings all!

I hope you are all doing well. My name is Jordan Chabalowski and this will be my first year at Burningman. I am really excited at the chance to go this year and have wanted to for a few years now. I face a tiny dilemma however.I am currently studying in Europe at the moment and will be here during the summer months helping to run some conferences and doing continuing education stuffs. I will not be back until the middle of August after the Reboot Now/Boom festival (roughly the 14th of August I will be back). Upon arrival I will be moving back to Menomonie, WI (about an Hour due east of Minneapolis) and from there I have hopes on traveling out to BRC. However I have a lack of transporation and I do not wish to add to the global predicament any more on account of flying. I am wondering if there is anyone out there who has a spare seat their
traveling party. I am more than happy to contribute for petrol (and in any other way I can) to get out to BRC. My email is Gaian.Mediations@gmail.com
I wish you all well in your preparations and I can't wait to see all of you lovely people out there.
Peace and prosperity

Full Info at http://www.midwestburners.com/interfuse .

The theme this year is Technophilia/Technophobia ! Below is a message from the Kansas Regional Contact Zay regarding the theme. I have big plans and would love to colloborate on some art too or at least help with making art. Regionals are a great place to test out playa ideas and Interfuse is my start to the summer fun season. Both of these equal a big WIN! If you have not been to Interfuse, it is amazing and not far from Iowa. I expect it to sell out this year so buy tickets when they go up early next year. I will send a message out.

Here is a bit about the theme:

Forwarded from post by: "Zay Thompson"
Thu Oct 25, 2007 10:10 am (PST)

Thanks for the great brainstorming and discussion of InterFuse theme ideas! The InterFuse 2008 Art Theme is now set and is described below.
--Zay, Midwest Burners

Technophilia/Technophobia
Technology: Do we love it or hate it? Does it isolate us or bring us together? Does it make our lives easier or does it add layers of complications? Do we own our tools or do they own us? Can we live without our technology? Can it live without us? We shape the world through our technology but to what extent does our technology shape our world views?

This theme is a study of modern life that is very relevant to us as burners. Modern technology is both a consumer product and a means to promote consumption. Yet it can also be used to create art and to connect us. Technology extremely enhances our creative abilities yet also enhances our destructive abilities. As we know from our experience with the fire arts, destructive technology can also result in positive beautiful things.

Burners are especially suited for examining our relationships with technology. We are some of the most technologically savvy people out there. We've used the tools of the internet to connect with each other and build a community like no other. We are intimately familiar with creating new uses for technology and subverting it to our own fun purposes.

At InterFuse 2008, we will mock, celebrate, exaggerate, demonstrate, and use technology to create. Bring your fearful or hopeful vision of our technological present and future. All robots, cyborgs, couch potatoes, slaves to the machines, Luddites, interactive tutorials, genetically enhanced humans, virtual selves, icons, nuts & bolts, flotsam & jetsam etc. are welcome! You can take this theme in any direction! Unveil a new and enhanced IF08 Theme version 2.0. Come set up your office cubicle camp, post-apocalyptic scenario, personal billboard, or cyber-utopia. Form a techno cult or create a reality TV game that has gone horribly awry. Show off your inventions, bio-fueled art car, or invite people to add to your open source installations. Create recycled trash art, build a DNA sculpture, or assemble something else so engaging that people find themselves sitting around it for 36 hours straight sipping energy drinks.

At the center of this technological cacophony will sit that most loved and most hated icon of modern technology, that mighty conduit of modern culture, that unmatched propaganda and marketing tool—THE TELEVISION! The TV will be large enough to serve as an open performance stage and projection screen. We will be filling our giant television with our own content. All participants are invited to create Premier Entertainment Programming and clever personal advertising to display on our TV. There must be NO dead air time!!

Our modern society churns out tons of STUFF! So, around the giant television will be piles of personal technology sculptures created by YOU. Bring an effigy of whatever technology you fantasize about burning. Does your cell phone drive you crazy? Build a larger than life cell phone with non-toxic materials like wood, cardboard, paper, cloth. NO BURNING ACTUAL PLASTIC TECH DEVICES! You could give your effigy evil teeth or put something in the screen to express it's annoying qualities. Put your art on the pile around the TV and watch it all BURN on Saturday night when we use our favorite medium, fire, to transform technology and reclaim it as an authentic tool of our imaginations.

Welcome to the Machine!

Incredible Minnesota Regional Event!

We have been given an amazing opportunity to create an incredible event! While I was in San Francisco at the Regional Network Summit I met Justin Katz, a gentlemen that helps organize special events for Burning Man and a member of the cabaret theater group Rosin Coven. He told me 5 incredible acts will be coming to the Twin Cities from San Francisco to participate in an AIDS benefit on Saturday, June 14th, and he asked me if while they are here they could take part in an event with the Minnesota Burning Man community. These incredible performers, from music to dancing to burlesque, would like to join us in celebrating the spirit of intentional community and gifting our own talents and skills to the community we live in. Needless to say, I told him we would love to welcome them here and share in a special event with them. Once some friends of his in LA got wind of what we wanted to do they asked if they could participate too, and now the people that we see on the playa under the bigtop - Cirque Berzerk - will be joining in the fun as well. Yep - that's *6* amazing groups coming that all want to connect with their Burning Man family in Minnesota ;)

Rosin Coven, chamber orchestra cabaret: http://rosincoven.com
Cirque Berzerk, freak menagerie & renegade sideshow http://cirqueberzerk.com
Dr. Abacus, cartoon jazz combo: http://dr-abacus.com
Fou Fou HA!, sexy buffoon clown dancers: http://foufouha.com
Gooferman, kings of Klown-Fi: http://gooferman.com
Hubba Hubba Revue, burlesque variety show: http://hubbahubbarevue.com

None of these acts have ever traveled to the Twin Cities, and when they found out we have a presence here they all got excited about the prospect of working with our own talented community. While we're giving these groups an opportunity to perform we will have members of our own community performing alongside them! Because we are an intentional community this also gives us a chance to pull together friends that may not have been to the event but share our passion.

What does all of this mean? It means that we need to roll up our sleeves and get some work done! This is a call for volunteers to help serve on the organizing committee, DPW workers for the event, creative thinkers to help us figure out details - you name it! We need to form the planning committee right away, with meetings to begin the week of March 10th at the latest. A small working group will be beginning immediately to start the ball rolling - this is a big effort, but with a lot of participation it will be easy to get done.

If you are an artist/performer that would like to opportunity to share your gift, get involved! If you've been one of the voices always asking why we don't do regional events, now is the chance! Once we have this event under our belt, the goal is to have a motivated group of people that can continue momentum forward and plan further regional events.

This event will adhere to the ten principles, which off the playa means very real things like a Leave No Trace plan and adhering to civic event requirements.

I frequently get asked why we don't have Regional events, up until now the answer has been because people haven't wanted to jump in and help. We now have a big motivated community getting stronger every day - now is the time to put the Minnesota Burning Man community on the map!

Please PM me if you are interested in helping, if you have any questions - heck, even if you just want to gab. But if you're first inclination is to say "YER DOIN' IT WRONG!", then this is your chance to help do it right!

Awesomely insane parody of Burning Man! This video is hosted by Adult Swim and it swaps out new ones every Friday, so it will only be around for a week.

Ho Hi and salacious salutations from Washington state. I'm a MN native coming to visit Minneapolis for Christmas. I'm curious if any one here might know about Santarchy or Santcon and whether or not you've got one already scheduled.

If not, I'm likely to doacratize this red bag here and break out some Santa on Minnesnowta. Thanks,

Big article about his ministry and new movie (which Brytee has posted a link for on his blog). Kinda fun since a few of us hosted members of the Stop Shopping Choir when they came through last year.

After talking with some fellow burners and realizing that we've got a sizable breaks lovers crew out here - I think we should start the B.O.B movement. Bring out Bassnectar!!!

If we all put our collective energies, time, and resources together, I seriously think we can get Lorin out here and have R A W K I N G good time.
So whaddya say - Who want's to be part of B.O.B?

Hello to all you fire spinning freaks out there!
I am going to be hosting some Anti-Spin Events here in the cities when the cold rolls in and fire jams as soon as it is warm enough!
If you would like to get on the e-mail list, please shoot me a message! This is going to be a great alternative for practicing. The main goal of the Anti-Spin List is to get together and teach each other different styles and improve ourselves as performers. There is a big lack of that here in the twin cities!
Love you all
Scatter

And our newest Gnome
Saeros

--------------------------------------------------------
For many a month Audiognomes has been silently mourning the loss of
their beloved Leader Gnome, who is lost somewhere in a funny shaped
state called Texas, they wandered Earth aimlessly in search of something
new, they stomped, danced and created music with a new fangled
technology called.... laptop.... but it did not fill the void, or the
laziness...

The box wine grew low, the future looked bleak. PsiloPsyBens cat
tried to kill Microcosm, Toki went without decent beer at many a gathering,
Robyo was forced to move to the "Ghetto". Scatter was almost always
scared and naked, and Geal was placed in a ward after he lost it and
thought he was Flava Flav... Times were rough.

Then one day a lovely Fairy Psy Mistress came to them with good
tidings. A new baby brother named Saeros,
and a place for them to dance with all their dear friends, a place for
music and artistic endeavors, so with a wave of her
hand, a PSY PARTY WAS BORN!!!

And it was about damn time.

Hooping Workshop Dec 1

Space is limited to 7 people, and here is how we'll do it: Email me if you'd like a spot, I'll contact each of you in the order I receive your requests, and then I'll give you instructions to get your payment in. Full payment will guarantee your spot in the class, and it will be non-refundable and non-transferable unless the class is canceled. In that event, which I do not foresee, you will be refunded or given a class credit, whichever you prefer.

Here are the details:

Hooping Workshop
Saturday, Dec 1
1:15pm-3:45pm
Sunroom of Center for Creative Arts
Cost: $35, to be paid upon registration

Intense workshop covers basics, building blocks, transitions, flow, technique, and intermediate/advanced tricks. Ask for what you want! Learn from one another! Pick my brain! Bring something to eat or drink if you'd like: we'll have an optional 15 minute break to refresh and rehydrate.

Workshop will be held in the Sunroom at the Center for Creative Arts, located on the corner of Pleasant and 38th St. Go in main doors on Pleasant, and the Sunroom is straight back and to your right.

I hope to hear from you, and the first 7-9 will hear back from me shortly!

slow-flow yoga class starting!

When: Tuesdays, 7-8pm
Where: Sunroom of Center for Creative Arts
What: Slow-flow beginner hatha yoga class
Cost: $72 for 6-week session, or $15 to drop-in

Here are the dates for the classes:

November 6, 13, 20,
Dec 4, 11, 18

The Center is at the corner of 38th and Pleasant, 3754 Pleasant Ave Minneapolis, MN 55409.

I'm a certified hatha yoga teacher with 4 years' teaching experience. This flow moves slowly, emphasizing breathing, posture, lengthening of muscles and ligaments, and union of mind-body-breath, leading to a quiet mind and inner peacefulness. Watch your flexibility, strength, and balance improve, and learn to feel centered and calm.

I scoffed a bit at the idea of yoga 6 years ago. I had an image of what it would look and feel like, and it didn't interest me. After the first class, I was amazed, and I find it hard to imagine not having it be a regular part of my life. It's undeniably powerful and feels incredible, and it's a joy to share it.

Wear comfy clothes, bring a mat (or email me if you need to borrow one, and I'll bring extras), and invest an hour in your well-being.

Email for details: jess at harmonyhoops dot com

October 13 is the proposed date of a joint Wisconsin/Minnesota decompression overnight campout. It's still in the very early planning stages, so I can't post any details yet. But it will likely follow much of the same procedure we had for our early summer event, and the previous decomp we had in 2005. Stay tuned for more details.

How serious of a fire dancer are you?

How serious are you about wanting to progress as a fire dancer?
Well, I am leaving to this festival called Wildfire in CT that is Sept 20-23rd. A friend of mine has decided it is best that he does not go and I need someone to fill his spot.
Wildfire is described as a fire training retreat. The festival is sold out and I do possess one sold-out ticket!
Check out these classes!!!!
http://www.copperheadfire.com/wildfire/Classes.html

I am looking for someone who is either in the Minnesota/Twin Cities area or is somewhere on the way to Connecticut from Minneapolis to help my friend Zach and I split gas. This is an amazing opportunity to learn so much about fire it'll make your head split with awesome illuminated circles of blazing energy!!!

Don't miss this chance, buddy.

So this means I am leaving TUESDAY or WEDNESDAY! Call me NOW or I will have to sell this ticket on tribe.net

Claire asked me to post the details here to see if anyone else would like to come with us:

Tuesday, October 16th
JUSTICE is playing (live) they are requesting a similar set up to Coachella 2007. The opener will be the Midnight Juggernauts

(if you've seen one of the flyers it says it's a dj set, but Beecher says it's guaranteed to be a live set, they just didn't want to reprint the flyers with only two weeks to go)

Also, if you'd like some examples of what to expect, it's Ed Banger, french electro-y/break-y/slighly house-y goodness, and youtube to the rescue. 8)

live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_y_8XcA-w4
dj - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkyhqE_VOEE (because it's fun, not because I'm expecting them to spin)

Anyone else like to come along? $15 presales, $20 at the door

Sure! Why not?

I will be a quarter of a century old on Sunday, but we're celebrating on Monday, because I always work on Sunday. Not that you know the reasons, you may continue reading.

How goth can you be? Now is your chance to find out! (Sorry, I couldn't resist.) Come join me and my various friends for Hard Mondays @ the Saloon (9th & Hennepin, downtown mpls). For those who don't know, Hard Mondays is basically goth/industrial night, so wear your chains and zippers, put on some black eyeliner, and share a glass of chambord as we brood and dance the night away. :)

I'll be there around 11 and staying probably the rest of the night. I would advise against bringing the flashy raver toys to this one unless you want to piss people off. Although, that's actually a perfectly good reason to bring them. So it's your call, really.

Fall WI Decompression

A message from the Wisconsin Regional Contact for the Burning Man Project

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ok folks, the WI AfterBurn event is all set up for ticketing at www.clevian.com/decomp.htm !

We switched to Paypal to collect the measly donation we ask to pull off this event... even if you can't come, you can wire us five bucks to help out, and be with us in spirit!

This is an event YOU make, we just set up the beautiful space and cover the insurance, so bring your costumes and treats and Playa art! We will have room for a few mini-theme camps, we even have a couple little booths, about lemonade-stand size, if you need something like that to use.

We will have live music and several rooms of Playa art, including the Honorarium art pieces Voices in My Head (2005) and Corn Woman (2007). And of course, the Man...

If you are coming from far away, we have a limited number of crashout spaces--- bring pad and blanket-- so at least you won't have to drive all the way home that night. Write to us.

Get your tickets now, we only have 65 to offer!

See you there. :)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Eric B. Griswold
Wisconsin Regional Contact,
Burning Man Project
Wisconsin@burningman.com

Hi everybody!

Back from the desert. Once again, WI had a good presence there:

A commissioned art piece in the Man Grove. One of about only 50 pieces, out of thousands, that got an art grant from the BM Org.

A Theme camp, now in it's tenth year, that ran Playa Speed Dating on four consecutive nights, including the Critically Single mass bicycle Speed Dating. Hundreds had their chance to hook up.

An Esplanade Theme Village, one of the oldest ones out there, that we coordinate in cooperation with our colleagues from Detroit and Toronto.

A Wisconsin Fire Troupe, performing as part of Temple of Poi, SF, span fire in the Fire Conclave before the Man Burned.

A Wisconsin independent television show was granted Press Status for the ninth year in a row....scenes and interviews from Burning Man will appear on Milwaukee cable TV starting in October.

We are not a very big Regional in the grand scheme of things, but we still make a difference. You should all be proud.

Our Fall WI Decompression will be Saturday, September 22, at the BurningSNOW Center, 2578 N. Weil Street, Milwaukee. This is typically the biggest event of our Burner year. Art pieces from this and previous years will fill the place. Bring your craziest Playa outfits for our fashion Show. Mini Theme-camps, live music and performance, an effigy Burn, a tiny desert created within a city. Far-travelers can write us for crashout space (bring pad and blanket). We are setting up the ticketing now. Stay tuned.

2) I didn't get to fill out the cencus while I was on the playa...does anyone know where I go to fill that out online? I couldn't find it on the Burning Man website.

I've canceled the show this Tuesday at Club Underground due to the resident DJ overbooking. Five DJs crammed into four hours doesn't give anyone time to create a vibe. Out of respect for the other 2 DJs she booked it seemed the only real course to take.

I just thought we might want to share out ride home difficulties-
this returning-to-gravity thing is HARD!

I became sick the last day, and on top of it - I threw up half of the way to Reno in the small Cessna.
(It wasn't all turbulence's fault...I am sure it didn't help I only had a Turkish coffee and a Foster's for breakfast!)

Half of our party broke down on the way into Gerlach (transmission) and theo thers had to buy some new tires for the trailer in Lovelock.

anyone else?!

Hi there -

My partner and I are going out of town next weekend (Sept 8 and 9), and we need dogsitters. Does anyone have suggestions of non-kennel boarding places or good peeps to come by our house a few times a day?

Thank you!

Where: (Camp Tell Me About It) in Snowflake Village at Esplanade and 7:00 at Burning Man. Right on the action-packed Esplanade where the highest concentration of midwestern burners are camping.

When: Midnight Wednesday through Friday. You have 3 chances to beat back the distractions and come meet us!

Why: The playa is a great place to get lost in! People often wander away from their camps *gasp!* and are tough to find. The playa is also a great place to connect with other folks you don't see too often. To make sure those connections happen, we're all meeting up for a half hour or so to say hello before deciding where to wander off to next!

Come meet new people from the Midwest and touch base with your old friends!

You know me ... i am the guy who post scary stories just to frighten the kids
so

here you go ...

FWD: Playa Update - Received from Sarah the Cookie - Today!

WIND WARNING. . .

Greetings from the playa where I am happy and well and holded up in my car. I dont want this to deter anyone from coming, as it's still a blast - but..batten down the hatches kids, cause the wind is the worst I've seen in the 12 years I have been coming here.

For those of you around when the big wind hit last year and took our camp down, that is the way it has been the bulk of the time - really that windy, mostly non stop. The airstream is shaking and rocking and my tent is tied to every rack and bumper and hitch the truck & airstream have, and I'm still unsure if it's going to hold up (one pole already snapped). The white out's are lasting a long time, some well over 5 hours.

I hear it has been like this for weeks, dont know if it will continue through the event. but the green man is about nature, so be prepared for the force of nature to remind us how small we are! The good news is that it's warm thus far, even in the middle of the night. MIkey & Sarah - the shade structure we have planned probably isnt going to fly (or is going to fly). certainly not with the fabric we are planning, i just passed some like it and it's not doing well even with the holes. however, the garage tents around here seem to be holding up when they have no walls & are tied down every few feet - so if you feel like grabbing one from costco, that could work.

or we can just cool off in center camp since it is so close (1 block). who knows, maybe the wind will subside. in case it doesnt, i suggest that if you are debating between a tent or a van/suv, you pick the car. be sure to put everything in bins that have locking lids, and in ziplocks inside those. if your tent has any open netting areas that do not zip closed with a solid fabric, i suggest glue gunning a fabric onto them, closing them up permanently, before you come here (fabric on the outside of the tent, so it's between the tent & the rainfly).you can always cut it off later. mine has a few open ones and theres a good 1/8 inch layer of dust inside, on top of the bed, the floors, everywhere. had to sleep with dust mask last night. too much to keep up with & too late to close them off.

the wind/dust is coming from the same direction as always so be sure to park your cars in a way that blocks it from anything you put up. and lots of bungees, ive been through 20 just for my tent. phil - great decision in sleeping in the rider truck. i think that is all to tell - just a whole lot of wind. will update you if it stops. am still having a total blast, the wind is part of the fun for sure, and look forward to seeing you'll in a week! cma, please bring glue gun so i can seal up my tent.

PS - wind reminders -fully enclosed goggles for day & night (not only dark ones), things that light up so u can be seen, bungees, rope, 2 ft long reebar - more than you think you need, heavy lotion, lip stuff, babywipes, giant sheet or tarp or something to cover all the stuff in your tent (to stop dust from getting into your bed), and lots of soft towels - more than you think you need. xx

The Heart's Guide to BM

I read this and think EVERYONE should read it. Had to repost. Enjoy. See you in the dust soon enough....

~a

As a single, hetero man, I know from experience that Burning Man can be a wonderful and crushing experience. Usually both, often at the same time. I can hardly think of a single guy who has shown up at the playa alone and not wanted to hook up with someone. The fact is, this desire can ruin your BM experience (actually, it just makes you think that your experience is ruined). I have found that there are lessons that I have had to learn multiple times. After last year, as soon as I got back, I made notes to myself for this year, while the experience was still fresh in my mind. Now, as the burn approaches, I am taking what I have learned this year and adding to last year’s notes. I thought to myself, “I wish someone had told me this stuff before I went to Burning Man.” So, I decided to post it here. Many points have been offered by other people at one time or another. This is just my collection.

Be present.
This is, in my opinion, the most important thing. As in the default world, all we really have at Burning Man is the now. You can’t even say that you will have 7 days of nows, because anything could happen. So, just experience every single moment fully. If you find yourself thinking about how sweet it would be to hook up with that hottie you just met or how it would suck if she didn’t show up when you guys were supposed to meet, stop. Look around. Burning Man is happening all around you right now. Experience it. Now. This is why you came. Don’t miss it. If you put being at Burning Man above getting laid at Burning Man, you will have a far richer experience. And, you will increase your chances of getting laid at Burning Man.

When in doubt, say “Yes”
When offered anything, material, interactional or spiritual at Burning Man, unless you think that that this would be a “bad thing” for you, say “yes”. Yes opens up new possibilities. Yes is fun. And, Yes is usually sexy. Conversely, if you don’t think it’s a good thing for you, then definitely say no. Multiple times, and loudly if need be.

Have no expectations.
Expect nothing, not even a good time or a shitty time at Burning Man. Expect nothing from others. Especially, do not expect to have sex at Burning Man. Even if you go with a lover or possible lover, do not expect to have sex with them, or anyone else for that matter.

Be prepared
The other side of the expectation rule. Understand the difference. Do not expect to hook up with someone, but be prepared if you do. Bring what you need. Get tested, if you haven’t already.

Give
Give your time, your attention, your trinkets, your love, your admiration, your beer, your energy, your opinion, your hand, your heart, your enthusiasm. Give everything you can think of.

Make contact
Talk to as many interesting people as possible. Then, talk to some people that you would normally talk to. Always have a notepad and something to write with. Take pictures of people and take notes to go with them. Get email/phone numbers.

Use alternatives to sex
You don’t have to have intercourse to be intimate with someone. Massages are, of course, a good option. One of my favorites is the foot bath. Bring a small tub and some nice soap and lotion for after. Also, there is cuddling, eye-gazing, you get the point. Often, it is the non-sexual play that leads to other things. If not, well, it’s all good anyway.

Take responsibility for your joy
If you find yourself in a situation that you don’t want to be in, don’t not blame others. Blame, anger will probably not make anything any better. So, take responsibility for your attitude, your survival, your joy. Remember that you always have three choices: Accept the situation, change the situation or leave the situation. Pick one of the three, then be at peace.

For example, here’s a personal tip. I set a waiting time for meet-ups. For me, it’s 15 minutes. If someone says that they will meet me at a certain time, and they are not there, or we miss each other for whatever other reason, after 15 minutes, I’m free to do whatever I want (including waiting longer). In any case, it takes away any anger or disappointment. It puts me in control. And, while I’m waiting, I am fully experiencing the moment.

Communicate clearly
In your dealing with people, make sure that you are clear in your intentions. Make no assumptions. Ask the questions you need answers to. Be tactful, but direct. Clear communication is sexy.

Use drugs wisely
If you use drugs, then plan your drug usage ahead of time. Consider doing no drugs at all. There’s nothing worse that happening upon a possible playa buddy, then being too fucked up to have any fun.

Keep a journal
A journal will prove invaluable to you, even if you never go to Burning Man again. It is so easy to forget all of the thoughts you had on the playa. Don’t wait until you get back to camp to write. Jot a quick note down in the moment.

Get rest
You cannot go to The Deep End every afternoon, then go out dancing every night. You must plan for down time. You should not dance until sunrise unless you can sleep late the next day. Get plenty of sleep before you drive home.

Don’t fuck people in your camp.
If you can avoid it, “Don’t shit where you eat.” Understandably, sometimes, you just gotta do what you gotta do. But, there are thousands of other people in BRC. Inter-camp hook-ups usually end up badly.

Read, then keep “The Four Agreements”
If you haven’t read “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz, I highly suggest it. It’s a quick, but invaluable read. If you aren’t driving, you can probably finish it on the way to Burning Man. If you are driving, get the audiobook. In any case, it puts you in a great headspace when you hit BRC.

Don’t forget the art
Burning Man is one of the most amazing art exhibits in the world. Experience as much of it as you can. Interact with it. Take pictures of it. Talk about it with other people who are experiencing it with you. This is one lesson that I forget every year.

Be grateful
Do you realize how lucky/blessed you are to be at Burning Man? Then give thanks, to the the people who sell you ice, to the Rangers, to your campmates, to the stranger who is now a friend, to (your dogma here) for creating the playa, the sky above it and the mountains that surround it. Give thanks, verbally and in your heart. You can’t do it enough.

If anyone has any other tips from the heart for Burning Man, I would love to read them.

Dusty kisses
OhTony

I have it all figured out... this will make us rich and more powerful then then Uchronians.. we should build ours in Sedona! Alright get to work! I'll meet you there!

Who wants to go?

Watch out, Stonehenge - a group of Cornish new agers is about to give you a serious run for your money. They call themselves the Tree of Life Reserach Foundation, and they're planning a seventy-acre theme park shaped like the tree of life: "the only symbol that is found in all civilized cultures, the one emblem that unites every religion and race." Ten one-acre cicrular gardens, each representing a different aspect of esoteric knowlede, wll be linked by 200-meter-longlong pathways made of... you guessed it, crystals. Lots of crystals. Recycled crystals, in this case, salvaged from old mnie tailings and now put to use to conduct pulses of sound and light("the living energies of the world") to and fro between the gardens.
Though physically located on the rocky moors of southwest England, the Tree of LIfe compplex promisees to transport visiors on " an extraordinary sensory voyage exploring the formidable powers that created out universe." It will also be a renewable energy demonstration project and research center, complete with solar energy sysems and hydrogen powered buses. So if youlike your esoteric spiritual journeys booosted by a healthy dose of modern technology, come relive the "age-old ritual if the Holy Grail," get a snapshot of your body's electromagnetic field, and write your loved ones' names on Tibetan rice paper prayer flags and bury them for good luck in the Garden of Mercury. And all you neo-pagans out there take note: with upwards of a million people visiting Stonehenge each year and 20,000 Druids, Wiccans, and Goddess worshippers showing up on Midsummer Eve alone to ring in the solstice, it may soon be time to spread the wealth a little and give Cornwall a try.

bob's. and my dj stuff for those who were interested.

In fact, emphatically bob's. I really enjoyed myself tonight, so thank you to the people I got to meet around the table (though unfortunately the only names I managed to hang onto were Surdo, Camomike, and Blue). Also, in that I've been lacking a playaname for years (and no one's managed to stick me with one yet), I decided to go with my online/dj handle Whyrd (though I mostly spaced on that and introduced myself as Joe). Anyhow, thanks again for the great conversations, and I'll do my best to drop in again on wednesdays, assuming I'm not freaking out with burnprep or practicing for my dj sets on the playa this year.

And speaking of music, I have about 6-8 laptop dj gigs on the playa this year (the number of camps who've said they're interested), though only 3 have actually told me where and when. Everyone else is still working on permanent playa-time. The ones I know about so far are
2am-4am Wednesday night/Thursday morning at Boogie Arts Universal (giant pyramid made out of old billboards, riveted together face in), at 9:00 & the Esplanade
3pm-5pm Thursday at The Duck Pond (100 ft slip-n-slide, dj, bar, and supposedly ninja lessons) at 3 & G or so, a block past the deep end
and 10:30pm to midnight:30 on Saturday, just after the man burns at Lemuria - 2:00 and H, I think.
If some of the other camps get back to me, I might also be playing at AutoSub, Ashram Galactica, Tiki Fuckos, and Pandemonium, and two other random camps said they're pro-chaos, don't want to schedule stuff, and just want me to drop by if I feel like playing.
The demo set I got the gigs with is at http://janus.visi.com/joelyon/demo.tar.gz (or just /joelyon/demo/ if you'd like to grab the mp3s individually or .tar.gz extensions are scary). Oh, and it's breaks, with a slight electro influence and some deep chunky basslines in parts.

Also, Erica and I will be camping with Shady Asylum (http://www.shadyasylum.org), and we're placed at 5:00 and Estuary this year, if anyone wants to drop by and chill on a 90% shade netted real lawn during the heat of the day. 8)

Also also, I was off tribe long enough to have my account expire, and I'm currently friendless (so can't pm anyone yet). Anyone who'd like to, friend away.

There's a link at the bottom to a pretty cool book, which chronicles the Belgian's journey to the desert, the construction of their amazing artwork, and it's ultimate demise. (IMHO best if viewd by downloading and viewing in Acrobat as 2-page spreads).

Hey all you talented Minnesotans. Don't forget, that YOU TOO are eligible for grants in the arts.
ART OFF THE PLAYA? Well, yeah- But maybe it will help you get the balls to do bigger and better HERE,
which means bigger and badder OUT THERE! I know it's all in a spiral, but one benefits the other, that's FOR SURE!
Maybe this will just get a few brains turned on to the idea.... but

McKnight money & Jerome money are AWESOME. I know a few folk who have already received them.
YOU CAN DO IT, TOO! Don't forget HOW YOU ARE WORTH IT!

McKnight Foundation also funds artist fellowship programs in ceramic arts, literature, music composition, music performance, photography, playwriting and theater arts, screenwriting and filmmaking, and visual arts, administered respectively by the Northern Clay Center, Southern Theater, The Loft, American Composers Forum, MacPhail Center for the Arts, Minnesota Center for Photography, Playwrights' Center, Independent Feature Project/North, and Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

The McKnight Artist Fellowships for Dancers and Choreographers annually awards three $25,000 fellowships to dancers and three $25,000 fellowships to choreographers who reside in Minnesota. Fellowships provide recognition and financial support for mid-career choreographers and dancers. The program is designed to award artists whose work is of exceptional artist merit, who have created a substantial body of work over a period of time, and are at a career stage that is beyond emerging. For complete information on how to apply please click on Guidelines at the right. See also the FAQs for answers to frequently asked questions about the fellowship programs.
