On April 12, 2008, Tribal SDstyle presents two workshops with the never before seen combined forces of Deb and Rose's ground breaking and core shaking Core Integration for Belly Dance, applied to phenomenal tribal technique and new stylized fusion choreography. Deb' Workshop: Engaging the Core: Slow and Slinky
12:00-2:00
Dive into a jar of molasses! In this workshop, we will deepen our slow, ooey-gooey moves to achieve that slinky, sultry, intoxication look and feel of Tribal Bellydance. Drawing from yoga, pilates, feldenkrais, and Deb’s personal ‘stash”, this workshop will focus on core integration, spinal articulation, and building the foundational strength and flexibility in the hips, spine, and shoulders to directly support controlled, snake-like dancing; create ‘floating upper body’ dance posture for stage; and enage in healthy backbending and lay-backs to save your low back. All this will be applied to bellydance technique, and juicy fusion combos and choreography. She has often been coined the ‘Queen of slink”. Come learn Deb’s unique tribal stylization.

Rose's Workshop:

Rocking the Core
Enhance and deepen your understanding of belly dance fundamentals with technique drills and tribal fusion combos. We will cover layering, shimmies, and up-tempo movements, great for any style of belly dance. This exciting Tribal Fusion workshop will include Rose's signature Core Integration material focused on building flexibility and targeted muscle group conditioning to improve your dancing. You will also learn a short choreography that highlights Rose's dynamic approach to contemporary belly dance.

Deb's Bio:
Debra Rubin, MA, CMT, RYT has been a life-long dancer and performer, trained and proficient in many styles. She has been a 5+year core performer, choreographer, and teacher with the ground-breaking, trend-setting Ultragypsy Bellydance Theater, until Fall, 2007, and a regular sub for Jill Parker’s classes. She has also studied from, performed with, and been majorly influenced by: Zoe Jakes, Mardi Love, Rose Harden, Mira Betz, Liz Strong, and Rachel Brice. Currently, Deb teaches and performs around the Bay area and beyond. She is seeped in rock solid Tribal technique, while also pushing the creative edge of exploration and fusion, to create her own grounded, unique performance and teaching style. A holistic health counselor, yoga teacher, and integrative bodyworker, Deb is also the founder of SattyaBodyHealingArts and Dance Collective. She teaches classes, workshops, and retreats fusing women’s health and empowerment with yoga, tribal bellydance, nature, and creative expression. Deb has taught at Kosmos world music and dance camp, at the Omega Institute in NY, and at festivals and healing conferences around the globe. Most recently, she is assisting Rachel Brice in her 5-day March Las Vegas intensive.

Rose's Bio:
Rose Harden is a founding member of Barbary Coast Shakedown, and a pioneering staple in the world-famous San Francisco tribal fusion scene, asthetic, and dance form. Rose has performed, taught, and traveled with Ultra Gypsy Dance Theater throughout the United States and Europe until Spring, 2008. In the past 3 years as co-director of Ultra Gypsy she has been a contributing force in the company’s dynamic choreography, and innovative costuming. As a performing member of Ultra Gypsy for over 7 years, her style is influenced by Jill Parker and inspired by the diversity of the San Francisco BayArea performance community.
Rose also performs with the Cyclecide Bike Rodeo and The Lifesize Mousetrap. When she is not performing, Rose manages Rosehips Designs, her costuming and clothing company. Her background in dance and movement includes Afro-Haitian, Brazilian, Afro-Arabic, West African, Contemporary dance, Fire dance, Pilates, Yoga, and multiple Middle Eastern dance forms. She has danced with Ultra Gypsy since 1999 and is an accredited teacher in the Jill Parker format.
Over 7 years of performing and teaching with Ultra Gypsy and her newest project, the Barbary Coast Shakedown, have given her unique insight to sharing the essentials of great technique, dynamic presence and the joy of this dance form.

Juliet performs this Sunday in the Imaginary Journey through Middle Eastern Dance

Hey all,

I will be performing in the Imaginary Journey through Middle Eastern Dance at the Saville Theater this Sunday from 3-5pm. It's a great show looking at Middle Eastern dance through time. And it is a fundraiser by Marula and Sahar Sami to support the YMCA.

Some amazing dancers will be there like Miss Dondi and the Shimmy Sisters. My time frame is 1910 - the dark Moulin Rouge.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 after the 19th. Call (619)298-0637 for tickets.

In this workshop, you will learn three drill combinations that will focus on the different movement groups important to creating a strong and effective Gothic Belly Dance style. Here's a few words on Yunakov I copied from a website... "Yunakov was born in Haskovo, Bulgaria, and is ethnically Turkish Rom. Roma culture was suppressed by the Bulgarian Communist authorities, but he learned to play traditional music from his family behind closed doors. Yunakov trained to be a professional boxer, but ultimately decided on a career in music. He’s lived in New York for years and is a favorite on the local Balkan music scene." ...and some more... " Yuri Yunakov is a founder and one the biggest stars of Bulgaria's wildly popular "wedding music" scene. A saxophone player of astounding technical virtuosity, his improvisational command of the style's signature frenetic, complicated, and abruptly shifting time signatures has been known to make seasoned jazz players gulp with disbelief. How Yunakov and "wedding music" ultimately overcame long years of government harassment and centuries of racial persecution makes an instructive and triumphant tale." Google him- you can find out all about him and his music.

I have one album of his, which is great. To me it sounds sort of like Polka, but with wild rhythms that make you feel dizzy and drunk. He's an amazing saxophone player. Considering it's free, or for a donation, I'd say it will be well worth checking out on a Monday night at the end of Summer.

We really need volunteer help for the Tribal SD Style Festival. We will need people to help during the day at the event to check in participants, help the vendor coordinator etc. We will also need help for the evening show: dressing room runners, ticket takers, stage managers etc. All vounteers get a free pass into the evening show. Japanese guys looking to fight fat are getting into belly dancing, according to Shukan Bunshun (6/21).

Women have been wiggling their hips for years, but now guys are also getting in on the act in increasing numbers.

"Perhaps the most accepted explanation of the origins of belly dancing is that it was a practice passed on through families since ancient Egyptian times," Kayou Aoki, belly dancing teacher and author of "Beri dansu de Aisareru Karada ni Naru (How Belly Dancing Can Give You a Body to Love)," tells Shukan Bunshun. "Belly dancing got its big break a couple of years ago and my student numbers have doubled in that time."

Aoki says belly dancing not only makes proponents thinner and more flexible, it also tones the arms and stomach muscles to create an overall better appearance.

"Working up a sweat heightens the metabolism and wobbling the midriff around improves the bowel and stomach functions," Aoki says.

Daiichi Suzuki, Seoul Olympic Games gold medalist and Juntendo University professor, used belly dancing to train members of the Juntendo University swimming team.

"Belly dancing is pretty tough on the lower half of the body. It's really effective in building up the torso muscles, you know, the abdomen and back," Suzuki tells Shukan Bunshun. "There's this idea that belly dancing is only for women, but in terms of building up fitness, I'd say there's a good chance belly dancing could end up like yoga or Pilates and attract both men and women." Sd Tempest Workshop & Evening Show 5/27/07

Don't miss Tempest's last stop in California of the Movin' De Michief tour as she winds her way across country to her new home in Philly. It may be a long time before we see her in So Cal again. This will be an amazing workshop and show. Tempest will introduce her darkly dramatic style at the workshop in the afternoon (2-4 pm at Kava Gallery). Join us in the evening for a dark gothic belly dance show at Kava Lounge (8-10 pm). Joining Tempest on stage will be San Diego's finest including our own first lady of gothic belly dance Laura Creatrix, the beautiful and dark Mistress Raine of Atash Maya, our high priestess of the dark Mother Cassie Mavis and moi, the Darkling Rose.

All profits of this event are a fundraiser for TribalSDstyle and our November festival. TribalSDstyle is a dance community activist group raising funds for local and international charities. This year will focus on fundraising for the youth dance and music classes and events of TrancenDance and World Beat Center. So support TribalSDstyle and come to the workshop and evening show.

May ETR- May 12th- Tribal SD Style Fundraiser!

The May ETR will be a fundraiser for TSDS. We will have dancers and a raffle. Please post if you are interested in either dancing and/or contributing to the raffle. We also need musicians! The Show is 9-11. The Egyptian Tea Room is located at 4644 College Avenue in San Diego.

All funds for the raffle (And any donations!) will go directly to raising funds to hold TSDS. What is Tribal SD Style you may ask? It is a ( and as far as I know the only) Non-Profit tribal festival with workshops and a gala evening show. Our first event was in 2005 and we raised money for NIger and Hurricane Katrina. This year all proceeds go to benefit Trancendance- a non-profit dance company providing dance classes for at risk youth in San Diego and the music programs of the World Beat Center. As a dancer, musician or dance supporter, you know how dance and music has changed your life. Help at risk kids to learn about dance and music by supporting Tribal SD Style.

This years Tribal SD Style will be held at the World Beat Center on Nov 10 and 11, 2007. Our featured workshop instructors are Heather Stants of UTDC, Sabrina Fox of Atash Maya, Sooz, Karen Tapia of Afri-belly, Laura Creatrix and Steven Eggers

Tribal San Diego Style Festival

Greetings all,

A small group of dedicated folks are putting together our own festival for San Diego. We have the talent - we have the weather - we have the location - why the hell not?

The festival will be held November 10 & 11th at the World Beat Center. We will have workshops on both days, fabulous vendors, and a gala evening performance to showcase all our wonderful instructors, a few guest performers, and Solace Live will be playing! The festival is a non-profit event benefiting the WBC and TranscenDance - both locals groups who help bring dance, music and arts to under privileged kids in town. We will be holding a series of workshops leading up to the event as fundraisers for the event.

Right now we need you! We need volunteers to help put this vision into action. We need sponsors to help fund this event. We need San Diego’s dance community to come out to our workshops to make this entire experience a success. Are you up for a challenge?

Tribal throwdown costume help

This is a strange request but here it is. Does anyone have a white/off white bell sleeved choli I can borrow. I am dancing at Tribal throwdown this weekend and had a vision of myself in my white costume dancing to Abadou- but I need a white choli to complete that vision. Does any one have such a choli to fit a C/D cup. Or a half top? Or some place in Sd that I could actually buy something like this. Any help or suggestions would be great. By the way, I am sewing challenged and don't have time to make said choli.

I hope u would all tell me if I really suck as a dancer. Cause all this discussion on tribe makes me scared to dance at tribal fest. Or anywhere for that matter. I know I'm not a superstar or a professional- and that was the focus of the discussion- but it still makes me wonder if I belong "on any stage". So what do u think? How does this affect u?

It's wierd- I have had people actually laugh while I was dancing, seen people with horrified looks while I performed and heard people that I thought were my friends make catty comments in the guise of constructive criticism- but I'm still gonna dance. Because I love to.

So what makes a superstar? It is a question that Karen posed on the "just so u know" thread. When I think of a superstar- I don't thnk of the BDSS show. Or a cheesy hollywood style personality. When applied to this dance- i think of the artist who can transcend time during performance. Who is the embodiment of the Goddess during dance. And who after the show is just like you and me-silly, goofy, dorky and obsessed with shoes, can't balance her checkbook, loves to spoil her kids (in whatever form they take)...

I could go on but what do u think?

I hope you are all enjoying this holiday season. I am enjoying my evenings with the family but want to wish my extended family love and light. I think 2006 has been wonderful. Come to the Haunted Harem on Sunday. It is worth the entrance fee just to see Meleah in her hawt bondage costume with black Isis wings. And Meleah as the Voo Doo Queen doing her butt shimmy over a cauldron. The dancing is really good. And you get to see the luscious scary and very snakey tribal gorgons- Cassie, Laura Creatrix, Selena (Winner of the Gothic category at HOF) and me.

Volunteers for Experimental Night

Friends,

I need some folks to come a little early and set up. I would like to push most of the tables outside so we can have more seating. Also, I would like to keep the lights down low during the dancing. So it would help is there is someone to interface with Cafe staff re lighting during performances and someone to run the music (can be the same person- I can switch off). I think it would be great to have an introduction to be read to the audience. Ritual folks please tell me exactly when you are going on- ie. 1st, right after Bonnie, middle and end. Who is purifying space, who is calling quarters, who is raising energy, who is closing? I think I have most of this down- but would like a recap. If each of the ritual performers can bring a small pumpkin for the inside tables that would be great. I will bring some votives. I am envisioning only the tall bar tables being in the room during the show with the space closest to the Cafe counter filled with chairs arranged theater style.

Some of you may have seen the post by Rom on the Eye Kandy glitter. I was intrigued and bought some. This was def the best glitter I have ever used. It is extremely easy almost no fail to apply. Also the adhesive seems to stay moist on the brush for a while. and the color was beautiful! I used gumball and it was so pretty even my husband thought it looked great and he hates makeup!

Then I went to the Habhi Ru (hope I spelled that right) website and the site confirmed he was moving here. San Diego is really becoming belly dance central. I'm reconsidering my suppressed desire to move back to SF.

The theme of this months ETR is student night! I am inviting all students who want to perform to participate. All styles are welcome. The ETR is a warm supportive environment. It is very casual, almost like a private belly dance party. We have live music, but you can also bring a CD. Please feel free to invite family and friends. I will be dancing with two of my students. We will also have professional dancers dancing in between student sets. Teachers, You are also invited to perform!

Our featured dancer this month is Genevieve!

Show starts at 9 or thereabouts. No cover charge. One block north of El Cajon on College.

Gypsy Night: Friday 1 September

Gypsy Night is an open monthly belly dance showcase that is a perfect venue for students and enthusiasts. The new Gypsy Night is now on the first Friday of each month from eight to ten pm at The Other Side Coffee House. The Other Side is located in North Park on the corner of Polk and 30th at 4096 30th Street, San Diego, CA 92104. Performers who would like to be featured can contact Genevieve at Genevieve67@sbcglobal.net or 619.857.9454, but the show is informal enough that they can also just show up to surprise the crowd! Between sets of featured dancers, the floor is open to all enthusiasts. Dancers at every level of experience are welcome to celebrate and experiment with movement. There is no stage or spotlight to intimidate beginners. The atmosphere is very supportive and playful. It is a wonderful place to let the dance community love and encourage you, and a great way to make new connections.

There is no cover charge at all. Tips are a delightful way to inspire the dance and musical artists.

The Other Side has a full array of coffees, teas, blended drinks, pastries, and even dinner fare. For those not yet familiar with the location, it is just two blocks south of El Cajon Boulevard or two blocks north of University Avenue. Hey all!

In addition to coming out to appear in the latest theatrical dance show from Malice Dreaming Productions, 'Original Sin', we are pleased to be offering not 1 but 2 partnering workshops!

Partnering Choreography
(11:30am – 1:30pm) ~~This workshop will focus on dancing with a partner, including some yoga based partnering moves and some new tango fusion! The focus of this class will be presenting combinations that focus on traveling and moving around your partner, and interacting with your partner in unique ways. In this fast paced class, every movement will be outlined and drilled, then combined to form the final choreography. No need to feel you have to come with a partner, there are always plenty to go around!

Partnering with Floorwork
(3:30pm – 5:30pm) ~~ This workshop will focus on partner dancing integrating floor work which will be presented in a choreography. Every moment will be outlined and drilled, then combined to form the final choreography. Because of the extensive floor work kneepads are a must! This class is designed for more intermediate/ advanced dancers, but options will be presented to change moves for beginner students.

When: Saturday, August 12th, 2006
