He has excellent English and knows what we call the movements here, so he's a really good teacher. He was also able to see what people needed correction on and articulate that. Not to mention his great musicality and dancing, but that's a given. I was so impressed.

Does anyone know if you can order his DVDs/videos anywhere? I just checked his website and didn't see them for sale. He had them at the workshop, but I didn't bring enough cash to pick any up.

This is from last year, but I thought it was an interesting interview. It can be found at this link: www.thehipcircle.com/article/display.asp

INTERVIEW: Mohamed Shahin - NYC, June 28, 2006

On the last evening of his six-month stay in the US, Mohamed Shahin had a candid talk with The Hip Circle about his impressions of dance in this country.

The Hip Circle: Tell us a little bit about your trip to the US. What places did you visit during your stay this year?

Mohamed Shahin: I taught and performed in New York, Miami, Chicago, Puerto Rico, Pennsylvania, Texas, Indiana and Los Angeles.

THC: Do you think that dance styles differ in the places you visited?

MS: Oh yes, for instance – I'm talking about Egyptian style Oriental Dance – all Egyptian teachers come to New York City, so there are many people who are "into" Egyptian style. In Miami it's the same. In Chicago, there's not much Egyptian style yet. During the last four years many Egyptian teachers started to come into the US so I predict that Egyptian style in the U.S. will become bigger.

THC: What other styles were you exposed to during your trip?

MS: What I like?

THC: Yes.

MS: I can tell you what I don't like.

THC: That's a good start.

MS: I see a lot of confusion. Many people don't know what Oriental Dance is. The problem here – actually in many places including Europe and Brazil – is that a lot of people take a few classes and then become teachers. The confusion happens because a lot of teachers have never been to Egypt or other Arab countries and they are teaching, but they are not teaching the real thing. So I am hoping that more Egyptian teachers – I am talking about Egyptian style – come to the States and teach more people about it. A teacher has to visit the Middle East because when you teach the dance, you not only teach the movement. You have to teach the music, you have to teach the feeling of the music. You have to see the original. You could never see that here – you have to see it in the real people.
But I do see many Americans that stay in Egypt for a long time, doing research and making documentaries, so they can come here to teach the real thing.

THC: Tell me what else doesn't make you happy about dancers here in the West who try to do Middle-Eastern style dance?

MS: I see that a lot of people here mix it - like fusion. Of course, as an Egyptian I love to see my dance done as the real dance, not mixed with something else - especially when it's not done right. That makes me so sad. But this year I noticed that many teachers and dancers from everywhere in the States are going to Egypt and they will be able to get more experience and see the real thing, the real teachers. That makes me very happy.

THC: In the States there is a thought that Bellydance is not Raks Sharqi, that Bellydance is somewhat bigger than Raks Sharqi, that it includes a lot more styles in it. What would you comment on that?

MS: This is a whole new style. This is American. Americans do that. But as Arabs we don't call it 'Bellydance.’ We do it now because Americans and people all over the world can only understand the word 'Bellydance.’ But we have the real name 'Raks Sharqi' which means 'Oriental Dance.’

THC: So you think the name should be used to name something different?

MS: Yes, Bellydance is something different. Bellydance is when you dance only with your belly. There is a dance from Turkey called 'Bellydance' and in it you paint a face on your belly and you dance only with your belly. That is called 'Bellydance' not 'Raks Sharqi'.

THC: What about the thought that Bellydance is mixed with Tribal Dance and now they call it 'Bellydance tribal fusion'? Is that something that you see as a good thing?

MS: I see that Tribal Dance becomes bigger and bigger every day. [Honestly], I don't know much about Tribal dance.

THC: Have you seen any Tribal Dance performances?

MS: Yes, I’ve seen it.

THC: Do you like it?

MS: Okay... mmh... actually, they mix it. They mix everything. Yeah, I know that they do Tribal Dance in California, and they do it here. They take some movement from Oriental Dance and some movement from somewhere else and they make Tribal Dance.

THC: What do you think of that?

MS: As I told you, I am Egyptian. I prefer the Egyptian style. I like to see the real thing, what comes from the Middle East. This makes me happy.

THC: Of all your trips in the States, could you name a few people who struck you as though they really ‘got' the Egyptian style of dance?

MS: Oh, yes! So many... as I told you, many Egyptian teachers have been coming in the last few years. I saw many people who dance good Egyptian style in many states.

THC: Mohamed, tell me - besides Egyptian style, what other forms of dance do you like?

MS: I did many different styles of dance: ballet, modern, folklore...

THC: You mentioned that you like Debke.

MS: Oh, yes!

THC: What do you like about it?

MS: I love the men when they dance. You really can see the man when he dances, not like a woman performing Oriental Dance. This is a man dancing. This is what I love about it. And I want people to know the difference between men and women dancing... in the Middle East, for Oriental Dance, we don't accept men bellydancing professionally. In Egypt any man or woman can get up and dance, just for fun, in any party or wedding, but not professionally, not wearing a bellydance costume, not in front of an audience – only for fun. But of course in many places in the United States male bellydancers are becoming more popular. And there are very good dancers that I have seen.

THC: What is your opinion about men bellydancing professionally? Do you think this is something that doesn't fit a man? What is your opinion on the subject?

MS: Of course this dance was originally – we're talking about 'professional Oriental Dance' – only for women. But I have seen many men who can move and dance very well. Our people don't accept male bellydancers professionally - they can't understand that. But in the rest of the world I have seen many male bellydancers and they really can move well.

THC: Why can't men dance in the Arab world like women can?

MS: Because this dance is only for women. Because it's done to make a man happy.

THC: Some would say that that's historically not true, that men also did it professionally in the past but that Western culture changed it because they were prejudiced against it.

MS: In Egypt? I don't think so. I know that in Turkey they had male dancers; I don't know if they still do. But not in Egypt, I'm pretty sure that was not the case.

THC: So it was always a woman's dance?

MS: Yes, because the Bellydance or Oriental costumes were created for cabaret, and cabarets in old-time Egypt only had women dancing for foreigners. They were just for men, not for women.

THC: Who do you think is the best dancer in Egypt right now?

MS: In Egypt there are many good dancers. I can pick something I like from each one. I like very much when Fifi Abdo does baladi style. Lucy dances with very good feeling and has a very good smile. She can move very well. I like her very much. I love Dina because she keeps your eyes on her when she's dancing and she has her own style. I love her as a person as well, we are very good friends.

THC: What dance style did you do when you began dancing?

MS: I did folklore. In Egypt we have a lot of different styles. Each city its own music, costume and dance. For instance, we have Saiidi, Fellahin, Hagallah; we have Debke Arish, from Arish...

THC: Egyptian Debke?

MS: Right.

THC: This is news to me!

MS: It's close to Palestinian Debke. Also we have Alexandrian dance and a dance called Bomboteia from Suez... I started as a folklore dancer, then I studied Modern Dance and Ballet.

THC: I heard that there is not a single school dedicated to Middle Eastern Dance in Egypt. Is that true?

MS: Yes, it's true. You know why? Because all Egyptian women know how to dance.

THC: Aren't you exaggerating?

MS: <laughs> I mean, most Egyptian women have it in their blood. When they want to become professional dancers, then they take classes. But we don't have a Bellydance school like you do here. We do have many schools of dance in Cairo, just not exclusively for Oriental Dance – they teach many other types of dance. But for the last five years we have had the biggest Oriental Dance festival in the world and this is a great opportunity for all the people to come and study there with very good teachers.

THC: If somebody wants to see the real authentic original dance – the Fellahin dance for instance – where should they go in Egypt? Do they go to a Fellahin wedding?

MS: Yes, you could see the real Fellahin people there. But of course it wouldn't look the same as the Fellahin that you see in the theater. There's a big difference, because when we create a dance for the theater we create our own choreography. We keep the style, the music and the costumes but the choreography is different.

THC: You perform the Tanoura Dance. Is that harder than regular Egyptian-style dance?

MS: Oh yes, it's very hard. Everything is hard about it: the spinning, controlling the skirt, controlling the accessories... it's a very complicated thing!

THC: What are your plans for the future?

MS: I am planning to come back next year. My dream is to form a group of men and women who will perform Folkloric and Oriental Dance in the authentic Egyptian style.

I hope all is well and that you are well. I've been working like crazy on the final touches of my new book "40 Days and 1001 Nights". It has been more work than anyone can imagine but is coming out great! It should be ready some time this summer
I'd like to announce that I'll be in Miami for two weekends. I'll be doing several workshops and events. I hope you can make it, enjoy them and support what I'm doing. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call me (206)226-3882 or e mail tamalyndallal@yahoo.com.

Friday, May 11, 6:30-8:30pm I'll be teaching a workshop about dancing to the Semaii rhythm loaded with technique and history.

Sat., May 12, 2-5pm I am teaching a workshop in using ethereal and earthy energies in your dance. Of course, we'll be dancing a lot!

The above two workshops will be at Bozenkas Bellydance Academy, (The site of the former Mid Eastern Dance Exchange, 350 Lincoln Road, #505, Miami Beach) www.bozenkasbellydanceacademy.com (305)538-1608.

For these workshops, I'll be using a Semaii cd that has lots of versions of Lamma Bada as well as one that just came out called "House of Taarab" with a great band who playse music from Egypt's "Golden Age" (1930's to 1950's). This also has incredible taksims- Nay, oud, and one of the most amazing violin solos I've heard yet, as well as a drum solo that's perfect for dancers.I'll bave it for sale at my workshops.

Also on Saturday, May 12 I will be showing my film, "40 Days and 1001 Nights" at 8pm in a cozy studio setting- at the Lotus Dance Center, 9117 Taft, Pembroke Pines.(954)433-5522
May 17-20 is the much loved Orientalia Festival and workshop series. This has been a yearly and sometimes twice yearly event since 1994, but now it is the last one. Orientalia involves over a year of planning, fundraising and doing paperwork. I have organized this one and some of the others while overseas or out of state, and they have always been a treat!

The festival, Friday May 18, 7-9pm (FREE) Special guest artists are: Mohammed Shahin of Egypt. He will be performing "Double Assaya" (stick dance from southern Egypt), Nubian, (Arab- African dance from Aswan), and the magnificent "Tanoura" (Whirling Dervish with a giant weighted skirt- cape that has to be seen!). Our other star, Ahmet Luleci from Turkey is an extremely sought after performer of strong and masculine Turkish folkloric dances. Back just for Orientalia is the much loved dancer and teacher who moved to Virginia a year ago, Shahar. Sevdije who lives in Tampa is of Albanian-Turkish heritage and will share her unique style of dance. From Gainesville, the beautiful and talented Najmah will dance, accompanied by Flamenco guitarrist, Goliath.Michigans Asianne, will fuse Asian and Middle Eastern styles, Alessandra from Costa Rica, Francesca, Portia, Nathalie, Roshanna, Amalia, Xiomara, the Shri Shambala Dance co., Bellycraft, and Bozenkas Bellydance Academy troupe will grace the stage.
