Dancing for Free

I have an issue. It's a real problem here in New Mexico. I feel that when a group or solo dancer dances for free it takes away all of our potentials for making a living dancing. Now before anyone gets into an uproar. I am totally ok with helping each other out for shows, raising money for our troupes, benefits or anything else that doesn’t involve padding the pockets of someone who has no problem paying the band $500 to perform but wants us to work for nothing.

I started dancing in New Mexico in 1981. At that time I was getting $65 average for each restaurant gig + tips. Now it's more like $35. What is up with that? The cost of living goes way up but our pay goes down. Are we so desperate for gigs that we have to volunteer to dance for little to nothing? Why should anyone pay well for a dancer's time when they can get it for $35 to free? We under valuing ourselves here in New Mexico and it's got to stop. We are a fairly small dance community compared to California or Oregon. (These are other places I've lived and danced.) Our competition pool is sparse compared to these cities. We have the ability to raise our wages if we were to work together to do it. We are worth more than the pittance the restaurant owner’s are offering.

Undercutting for belly grams is another issue we need to discuss. I’m I making a big deal out of nothing? What’s your opinion of this issue? Tell me if I’m out of line on this.

Happy commenting and blessings, Rozana al Jinan

LETTER 2 FROM NAKISH

Hello
Hello;
To all my Tribe members and others.;
I want to reach out to everyone who received my first e-mail letter and express my deep apology for the typographical errors.

Available time for me has been limited. It has interfered with my quiet
sit down moments to send off another letter.

I work for a National & International Theatrical local that covers the entire musical spectrum such as Broadway shows, Opera, Ballet, Symphony, Movies, and Industrial Shows, dance companies & all other music events. At times, it keeps me on the move.

I also build for a Designer who designs for smaller theater companies in the San Francisco Bay Area.

An email address has been set up under ladywiththeeyes@yahoo.com
For those who want to contact me. But be aware; don’t expect me to correspond immediately.

I want every dancer to keep a journal each time a club owner discriminates against you for the following reasons:
1) Race
2) Size

Here is a list of things I want everyone to write down:
1)	Club name
2)	Club address
3)	Owner name
4)	Date
5)	Time
6)	The full conversation and any witnesses name, phone number you can get.

News
2008 Intensive workshop in the making;
July 2008

If I get the total response needed, I will give a four day intensive
Work shop and dinner show. There will be surprise teachers plus myself with certificates.
The work shop will be limited. No walk ins. This is the only fair way a certificate can be issued.

I clearly want to express again, that the four days can only happen with total response. If not, a smaller workshop will take place.

Your email response will help a great deal. I’ll need your contact information
So I can update you , or put you on first mail priority, because it will be limited.
Ravenmoon is my right hand, and is working with me. You may also contact her at sacredraven@msn.com.

Bellydance and bedlah blessings

Hello from Saint Louis! It's quite cold here. Nov 30, there was an ice storm in the area. It was bad enough that large parts of the area lost power, including yours truly. The story of how my life was saved actually started 7 years ago when I inherited my grandmother's fur coat. But with global warming I only wore it two times since 1999. Then 3 years ago, I designed an ad for a friend. She said, "I don't have money to give you but I have some sari material from Bali." Last week, as the apartment got so cold I could see my breath and as frost collected on the bathroom fixtures, the fur was my housecoat by day and warm blanket by night. I boiled big pots of water on the stove and moved a cot into the kitchen. The sari material was just the right size to hang in the doorway to keep in the warmth. Of course, shimmies not only take your mind off the situation, they are a great way to get warm too. I don't have a portable DVD but I do have a CD player. I simply cranked up the KODO (thanks to Amaya for turning me on to taiko) and I danced. Got that kitchen up to 72 steamy degrees! Bedlah, bellydance and my own guardian angel kept me alive!

Power came back Monday. Through it all, I just happened to be reading a book called "Radical Acceptance." Irony or coincidence?

Life is getting back to normal. I'm reading "Snake Hips" now. I'm also pruning up nicely in long steamy hot shower sessions to make up for so much lost time!
