What's your opinion on this:
A friend told me a true story about a guy who was caught doing 90mph in a 30mph area, when he was caught he said he was "drying his car". It went to court as it was excessive speeding and the judge reviewed the case and said that the guy had been fined on twice before and had already had points put on his license and this hadn't worked. As the guy loved his car so much, the judge impounded it for a month as punishment as he thought this would be a much harsher punishment.
Do you think judges should be able to deal out punishments to fit the person? Should the judge have made Naomi Campbell go without make-up for a month instead?

Re: Question ...
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 8:43 PMLet her be treated with the same disrespect she showed.
This would of course require her to cut her nails, wear rubber gloves, get on her knees and scrub with some hardcore solvents.
Everything she cleans should be done twice.
And she should eat off it.

Re: Question ...
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 4:30 AMit would be fun to allow the judges to make sentences fit the crime.
I love it when the judge gives vandals the job of picking up road trash and fixing things.
And not always "punishment". Creative sentencing would allow the justice system to be able to attack the root of the problem. If the vandals are doing it because they are bored, creative punishment could make them less bored.
For example, don't take the speeders car away, just put a speed limiter on his car so that it will only ever go 25mph (and place restrictions on his use of freeways and higher speed roadways). He can still get where he wants to go, but it will always take him longer to do so.
Actually, for about $500 bucks or less, it is possible to put a GPS device on his car that will broadcast his average speeds to the nearest authority. It could also be programmed to never exceed the speed limit for a given area, or better yet, to shut down for an hour if he does.
Make that part of his long term rehabilitation.

Re: Question ...
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 12:25 PMI love the idea, but I guess in practice it probably doesn't work on a broad scale.
I do think that repeat offenders should have their cars taken away (and depending what they have done have the car crushed). I love the idea of speed limiters and gps. -

Re: Question ...
Sat, March 24, 2007 - 1:31 PMTaking the car away (temporarily) could be feasible, but I can speed in a Ferrari as well as a '85 Bonneville beater.
Speed limiters could prove more harmful than good: one is allowed to exceed the speed limit for such things as passing, or merging onto highways.
A forced shutdown of the engine could cause the same problem as well. -

Re: Question ...
Sat, July 28, 2007 - 2:57 AMThe idea climbs along side with "an eye for an eye". Every person, criminal or not, is unique in their own right. Some may not be able to withstand the punishment, in fact the sheer humiliation may aggravate the criminals.
I think that the reson our country has the most prisons and prisoners than any other country.
Sentences need to be extremely more harsh, The time should be long as well.
What lesson do these people learn when they know they can kill you and be inand out jail within less than10
The problems of the world!!!!!
