it would be fun to allow the judges to make sentences fit the crime.

I love it when the judge gives vandals the job of picking up road trash and fixing things.

And not always "punishment". Creative sentencing would allow the justice system to be able to attack the root of the problem. If the vandals are doing it because they are bored, creative punishment could make them less bored.

For example, don't take the speeders car away, just put a speed limiter on his car so that it will only ever go 25mph (and place restrictions on his use of freeways and higher speed roadways). He can still get where he wants to go, but it will always take him longer to do so.

Actually, for about $500 bucks or less, it is possible to put a GPS device on his car that will broadcast his average speeds to the nearest authority. It could also be programmed to never exceed the speed limit for a given area, or better yet, to shut down for an hour if he does.

Make that part of his long term rehabilitation.

I love the idea, but I guess in practice it probably doesn't work on a broad scale.

I do think that repeat offenders should have their cars taken away (and depending what they have done have the car crushed). I love the idea of speed limiters and gps.

The idea climbs along side with "an eye for an eye". Every person, criminal or not, is unique in their own right. Some may not be able to withstand the punishment, in fact the sheer humiliation may aggravate the criminals.
I think that the reson our country has the most prisons and prisoners than any other country.
Sentences need to be extremely more harsh, The time should be long as well.
