Does anyone know how it is that trainers/the Amish/people in general choose a driving horse? Why is it that Standardbreds and Morgans are picked more often as driving horses then say Quarter horses? I can understand why heavier horses like Clydesdale's and Belgians are used for driving but of the lighter breeds why these two the most?
Just curious :o)

Re: Driving horses
Thu, July 20, 2006 - 6:03 AMI think it is because of their conformation and gait. Quarter horses are more suited for working with stock where as the other breads you mention can be trained more easily for carriage harness. -

Re: Driving horses
Sat, July 22, 2006 - 10:23 PMthe Amish like Standardbred, Morgans, Thoroughbreds for driving. these horses have a longer stride and can trot all day and cover a lot of ground. seeing that the buggy is their only transportation, they need to get there, and back the same day....and as sonn as possible. the QH is a stock breed, short backed, bulkier and not for trotting long distances. b/c of their conformation, the Morgan has the speed and agility of the other two....even tho he is a smaller horse.
