Good afternoon to all! Thank you all very much for taking time to read and respond to the little blurb about this tribe.
Many of you have asked what type of movies I enjoy. Well, I like a wide range of movies. It really depends in what mood I am in. When I can’t sit still or pay attention to anything for longer than 10 minutes then I watch a chick flick or a comedy, it doesn’t take too much concentration on my part to get what’s going on. Then there are the movies that make me think. Movies I put in that category are, Garden State, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Elizabethtown. There is something about the story and the shooting style that makes me think about life. Then there are the action/suspense/horror flicks that I love. I really do enjoy a psychological thriller very much. Really though, it just depends on my mood.
My favorite scary movie is a tie between The Shinning and Saw. I like them for different reasons though. I enjoyed The Shinning because I think Jack Nicholson is an amazing actor, I find him to be horrifyingly believable (in every role he plays). And the little boy, Danny Lloyd, AMAZING!! I don’t care what you say, everyone was a little bit freaked out or uncomfortable the first time they heard Danny/Tony saying Red Rum and then saw the reflection of Red Rum in the mirror. I don’t think you need blood, guts, or violence for a movie to be scary. Now after I came to college and had taken classes in set building, script analysis, lighting, and sound, is when I was fully able to enjoy how The Shinning was shot. I think the lighting is wonderful. The blues and purples from the sunrises at the hotel are beautiful. I really enjoy the directors choice not to have the film super dark like most horror films are. I don’t like when it is very dark and things jump out. Its scary for the moment but then I expect it to happen and it loses its effect. I think it is a lot scarier if something jumps out or happens in full light, because you don‘t expect it to. The Shinning is one of my favorite movies because it’s is believable. When I see a movie and think, “That could really happen,” is when I have to sleep with the lights on.
This brings me to my next movie, Saw. I begged and pleaded with one of my friends to see this movie with me at Prochnow here at NAU. Walking back to my dorm after the movie we were both jumping, screaming, grabbing each other, and running from all sounds and movement. What scared us the most was not the cutting off of the foot, the digging through the toilet full of feces, or the “dead” guy in the middle of the room. What freaked us out is the fact that we didn’t think it was too far fetched. There are some crazy sick people out there who think they can make the world a better place. I don’t know what it is about Saw, but I watch it a lot. It could be the colors that draw my attention or the little details in props that memorize me, I don’t know what it is. I get nightmares and need to sleep with the lights on after I watch it, but I continue to watch it, I even bought it so I didn’t have to keep renting it.
If our assignments continue to look like this you can expect to read about movies that either have steered my life into a certain direction (Sweet November), or movies that I feel represent my life. Those movies would be, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and Tortilla Soup.
Hopefully I have given a clearer picture of what to expect in this blog. Have a wonderful weekend, see ya’ll on Tuesday. P.S. This blog will not be about new releases…I don’t see movies in the theatre that often because I can’t sit still that long. I need to be able to pause a movie so I can take a quick break. Peace.
