Kimberly Melhus Presentation

What I liked about the presentation this afternoon were the elderly friendly demo cell phones. I think that products made for “old” people are big and ugly, making a cell phone that is slim and simple for senior use is a good idea. I think I appreciated that part of the presentation because my grandmother can’t figure out how to even answer her cell phone, and she can’t dial numbers either.

I really thought the projects she had worked on were very artistic. The top campaigns I liked (in no particular order) were, the Where the Sidewalk Ends Calendar, the neighborhood picture, the dog laws, and aids has no age. I think she has a fresh look on ideas and knows how to execute her vision. In an educational setting I think this is important to help your students learn and succeed.

This is my first attempt to blog. The reason for this blog was to meet the requirements for the Northern Arizona University School of Communications’ class EMF 129 audio/visual storytelling. Everything that I wrote about was written to meet the requirements of the weekly assignments. Thanks to all of you who have taken time to read what I had to say about movies.

This event will be one for the records. These students will be telling their great-grandchildren about the day they received feed back from directing legends Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick. All three celebrities gave advice to these future filmmakers that will result in artistic success. Hitchcock talked about the importance of creating a cameo for yourself in your films, Kubrick gave advice about incorporating unique angles into the film, and Gundry gave valuable advice on different shooting techniques.

As everyone was filtering out the comments were flowing. I overheard some theatre students’ (one of which stared in one of the short films) who were blown away with the films. I heard one of them ask, “Why don’t the film classes team up with the acting classes? We could totally use the experience AND the exposure.“ Today’s event have been a worthwhile experience. We hope to see these films on the NAU UTV62 in the near future. Have a great day everyone!

About 8 minutes after I posted my first live blog the crowed doubled in size. Not only are their friends and family here showing support, but THREE celebrities got news of this group of students and have traveled from afar to see what the film students at NAU have been up to. Celebrity Alfred Hitchcock, director of The Birds, Stanley Kubrick, director of my personal favorite movie The Shinning, and Michel Gundry, director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind.

Currently the “meet and greet” is in progress. This consists of everyone surrounding the celebrities who are enthusiastically sharing stories and useful tips. In a few moments everyone will take their seats to begin. Each group will be asked to introduce themselves and their film, following the introduction the film will be shown. After the film the floor will be open for questions, critiques, and suggestions.

There is still time to get down here. At 2:35 the doors will be closing to being. If you come late wait outside, when a film is over the doors will be left ajar for late comers.

I’m blogging live today from Cline Library’s media service rooms. Today Charlie Hicks’s EMF 326 Field Video Production class is gathering today to preview the rough cuts of their final projects.

It’s about 10 minutes till 2:20 and people are slowly starting to arrive. Currently the only attendees are the students in EMF 326 and Professor Hicks. The students are very excited to show their work off. As they walk in and greet Professor Hicks they are all bragging about how awesome their film is. Soon enough we will be able to see ourselves how “awesome” their films are.

This Thursday the EMF 326 (ENG/EFP) class will be getting together at 2:20 in the Cline Library’s media center to view rough cuts of their final projects. There will be four films to view, two music videos and two short dramas.

This past semester students have been learning about lighting, audio, and how to put together a story. These students have very promising works that use many different creative techniques. Come spend an hour viewing these works in progress and learn about what goes into making a short film or music video. Hope to see you here!!

Here are some internet sites that might enhance your movie viewing experience…

Sometimes its hard to get to the movie store to rent movies, and then there is the problem of getting back there to return the rented movie. It is especially hard when you don’t have a store close to you. There is now an option for those people who have a hard time getting to the movie store to rent. Rent movies online. Blockbuster and netflix are two places that offer an online renting membership. Both these sites offer different planes to you can find the right one to fit your needs.

https://www.blockbuster.com/signup/s/plan/p.26722/

http://www.netflix.com/Register?mqso=80012928

Have you ever wondered if the actors in Center Stage are actual dancers or if they are stunt actors? Or, maybe you have part of a movie quote in your head but you can’t seem to get it right? Sometimes you can’t remember what actor was in your favorite movie. IMDB, or the Internet Movie Data Base can help you. You can find biographies on actors and get actual quotes from movies. Another great feature IMDB has is the photos and names of the main actors, when you click on them you can see other movies the actor has been in. See photos from your favorite film, learn trivia, and become an expert on a particular actor by using IMDB.

http://imdb.com/

Another must know internet site is fandango.com. Find show times, find out if a movie is sold out before you get to the theatre, or buy tickets online. Read a synopsis and find out how many stars it received. All you need to do is type in your zip code or city and state to find a theatre near you.
Buying online

Buying DVD’s in store can get expensive; buying online might offer some sort of discount. But before purchasing a movie online make sure you are buying it new. There is nothing worse than buying a used DVD that is full of scratches, it will ruin your viewing experience. Check out Amazon.com. They offer a review and ratings. You can also get ideas of other movies you might enjoy.

27 Dresses

Jane (Katherine Heigl) is every bride’s ideal maid of honor. She devotes her life to fulfilling the happiest day of her friend’s lives. Matrimony reporter Kevin (James Marsden) discovers this obsession of Jane’s and decides she is his ticket out of the engagement page. Jane and Kevin relationship blossoms during the time Jane is helping plan her younger sister’s wedding to the man Jane is secretly in love with. It is during this time that Kevin begins to fall in love with Jane. This film depicts sister rivalry at its lowest form and shows the full force of what love will do to people.

The Devil Wears Prada

A fresh enthusiastic young report Andrea (Anne Hathaway), is looking for a job to get her foot into the journalist world. She applies as an assistant at an elite high fashion magazine where she sticks out in the wrong way. Besides the fact she is a size 6 working in a size 0 market, Andrea also has no fashion sense. Which leaves her as the running joke in the office. After being miserable with the ridiculous errands that she is sent on and constantly being laughed at Andrea decides to change her situation. She become fashion savvy and does her job to the best of her ability with a smile on her face. Its is when she finds that she is not the person she want to be that she has to consider, do I want to reach high places by using others? An excellent film that makes a person think about how they want to be remembered.

No Reservation

Balancing a family and career was never an issue for chef Kate Armstrong (Catherine Zeta-Jones), until she receives a life-changing phone call. Her sister has died in a car accident and she is left to raise her niece Zoe (Abigail Breslin). Now Kate must find a balance between being an exclusive restaurant chef and a guardian to her young niece. While taking time off to cope with her new life, Kate returns to her restaurant to find sous chef Nick Palmer (Aaron Eckhart) has turned her orderly kitchen into a singing relaxed atmosphere. Between fighting to gain control with her kitchen staff and trying to understand her niece, Kate turns her life around. She lets go of some of her control issues and falls in love.

Golden who???

There is a specific relationship that all women have. These relationships will withhold the test of time. This relationship will always hold a special spot in every girl’s/young lady’s/ and women’s heart.

As someone who has never seen a whole episode of the Golden Girls, I do not feel I have the passion to discuss them in detail. What I do understand about the Golden Girls is that they are four very different women who have cultivated a unique and special relationship. When I learned this I was instantly reminded of two movies that resemble this relationship through a different generation of girls.

The first is my current favorite tween books/movie, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Like The Golden Girls, the Sisterhood consists of four strong ladies that are very different. There is Lena, the mother, Tibby, the sarcastic pessimistic, Bridget, “single-minded till the point of recklessness,” and Carmen, smart but lets her emotions boil over. These girls don’t live together, but they are best friends and spend every minute possible together. They were together when Carmen’s parents got a divorce. They were together when Bridget’s mother passed away. They were there when Lena fell in love for the first time, and they were there to help Tibby through her loss which changed how she viewed life. They learn and grow together, becoming stronger with each experience they share.

The other movie that resembles the Golden Girls is Now & Then. During purity every girl watched this movie with their girlfriends at a sleepover. They saw themselves in each of the characters. Roberta, the tomboy, Teeny, an only child who dreams of being fawned over by all. Samantha, older than her years due to her family being the first in the neighborhood to get a divorce, and Chrissy the girl who believed that women got pregnant by a man sprinkling his watering can on a woman’s garden. These girls protected each other, they stood up for each other, and they promised each other that they would always be together, whenever any of them needed each other. This is how they stay connected. Through this promise. The promise is what keeps them friends for years to come.

I might not know anything about the Golden Girls, BUT I do know a little something about the special bonds that girls make when they are 5, 12, 16, and early 20’s. It is special and in someway, every girl has had a similar relationship, and that is the bond all girls share. A secret club of friendship.

Good afternoon to all! Thank you all very much for taking time to read and respond to the little blurb about this tribe.

Many of you have asked what type of movies I enjoy. Well, I like a wide range of movies. It really depends in what mood I am in. When I can’t sit still or pay attention to anything for longer than 10 minutes then I watch a chick flick or a comedy, it doesn’t take too much concentration on my part to get what’s going on. Then there are the movies that make me think. Movies I put in that category are, Garden State, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Elizabethtown. There is something about the story and the shooting style that makes me think about life. Then there are the action/suspense/horror flicks that I love. I really do enjoy a psychological thriller very much. Really though, it just depends on my mood.

My favorite scary movie is a tie between The Shinning and Saw. I like them for different reasons though. I enjoyed The Shinning because I think Jack Nicholson is an amazing actor, I find him to be horrifyingly believable (in every role he plays). And the little boy, Danny Lloyd, AMAZING!! I don’t care what you say, everyone was a little bit freaked out or uncomfortable the first time they heard Danny/Tony saying Red Rum and then saw the reflection of Red Rum in the mirror. I don’t think you need blood, guts, or violence for a movie to be scary. Now after I came to college and had taken classes in set building, script analysis, lighting, and sound, is when I was fully able to enjoy how The Shinning was shot. I think the lighting is wonderful. The blues and purples from the sunrises at the hotel are beautiful. I really enjoy the directors choice not to have the film super dark like most horror films are. I don’t like when it is very dark and things jump out. Its scary for the moment but then I expect it to happen and it loses its effect. I think it is a lot scarier if something jumps out or happens in full light, because you don‘t expect it to. The Shinning is one of my favorite movies because it’s is believable. When I see a movie and think, “That could really happen,” is when I have to sleep with the lights on.

This brings me to my next movie, Saw. I begged and pleaded with one of my friends to see this movie with me at Prochnow here at NAU. Walking back to my dorm after the movie we were both jumping, screaming, grabbing each other, and running from all sounds and movement. What scared us the most was not the cutting off of the foot, the digging through the toilet full of feces, or the “dead” guy in the middle of the room. What freaked us out is the fact that we didn’t think it was too far fetched. There are some crazy sick people out there who think they can make the world a better place. I don’t know what it is about Saw, but I watch it a lot. It could be the colors that draw my attention or the little details in props that memorize me, I don’t know what it is. I get nightmares and need to sleep with the lights on after I watch it, but I continue to watch it, I even bought it so I didn’t have to keep renting it.

If our assignments continue to look like this you can expect to read about movies that either have steered my life into a certain direction (Sweet November), or movies that I feel represent my life. Those movies would be, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and Tortilla Soup.

Hopefully I have given a clearer picture of what to expect in this blog. Have a wonderful weekend, see ya’ll on Tuesday. P.S. This blog will not be about new releases…I don’t see movies in the theatre that often because I can’t sit still that long. I need to be able to pause a movie so I can take a quick break. Peace.
