I will be teaching two workshops at the event:

Adding Drama to your Dance
Drama isn't always a bad thing - particularly in belly
dance! In this workshop, Ms. Zuza will teach techniques
for adding the dramatic elements to your performances.
Topics include developing and evoking a persona before
going onstage, dramatic facial expressions, connecting
with your audience members and adjusting dance
movements for dramatic effect.

Fan Fusion
One fan. Two fans. Red fans. Blue fans. Learn the basics of
fan fusion Ms. Zuza style! Learn basic fan techniques -
opening and closing, snaps, hand and arm techniques,
dramatic poses, and single and double fan movements,
Flamenco style and Japanese influence. Please bring a fan
or two of any kind for this workshop. A few fans will be
available to borrow from the instructor.

Schedule

Saturday, July 26

10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - Gahwazee Influenced Improv
Take the dance back to its roots! Inspired by the folk dances of Upper Egypt, Urban Gypsy brings you a "brand new" (but really old!) vocabulary of sassy and earthy movement combinations from their time spent with the Gahwazee and folk dancers in Cairo last year. Hearken back to the days of dancing in the desert with Urban Gypsy. Don't forget your zills!

2 - 4 p.m. - Troupe Synchronicity
Learn some tricks to make different body types, different strength levels, long legs, short legs, long or short torsos ALL look enough alike to paint a total picture. You will to take home some exercises to help make you more aware of the differences and to help get you in sync with your dance partners!

8 p.m. - Ms. Zuza's Belly Bonanza featuring Urban Gypsy and regional dance talent

Sunday, July 27

10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - Sharp and Funky Movements with Sahira
Using funky pops, locks & intense isolations to create a modern urban flair in your dance. Usable on the stage or in your favorite club.

2 - 4 p.m. - The Joy of Poi: Fireless Fire Spinning*
Basic poi technique and transitions for the belly dancer. No fire will be used in class.

* Practice poi can be purchased at many online stores, including www.homeofpoi.com/. Or, make your own using 2 tennis balls and a pair of strong stockings (the thick, opaque kind) or tube socks.

We will not have any extra poi. But fabulous practice sets can be purchased here:
www.homeofpoi.com/
I recommend these: www.homeofpoi.com/shop/prod...Fluffy-POI

If that doesn't work for people, tennis balls in tube socks work in a pinch.

What Bastet posted:
Here's an easy way to make practice poi:
Get 2 tennis balls and a pair of strong stockings (the thick, opaque kind).
Cut off the legs of the stockings and put the tennis balls in the feet.
Ta-daa! Cheap, easy practice poi! Also, these double as a self-massage tool for use after long practices and rehearsals! I've had mine for a year now and they are still in good shape!

SHARON SAT, 10 - 1
#1
Weaving it Together: Technique-Focused Dance Combinations.

In this class we will not only work on honing our dance technique, we will put it to good use as we put those moves we have drilled ever so faithfully! We will learn and create some fun combinations that can be incorporated into your own repertoire, keeping strong muscular skill and alignment well in hand so the creative juices are free to flow! As we weave our moves into combos, we shall then weave the combos into a choreography to take with us! This class is fun and appropriate for all levels of Tribal-flavored dancer, and those new to Tribal Style are encouraged to give it a try. Some Bellydance experience is recommended. Please wear exercise-friendly clothes and bring something to tie around your hips!

This class will largely focus on posture and technique. We will begin with basic drills and move onto more complex drills and then put these movements into short combinations. This class is great for beginners and an excellent review and workout for intermediate dancers.
#3
Layering Tribal Fusion Movements with Control and Precision:

This class will begin with posture and technique drills, focusing on executing movements correctly and gaining muscle memory which is crucial in layering. We will continue by layering these movements on top of each other and eventually working towards layering 3 movements at a time. These moves will then be put into combinations and a short choreography will be introduced. All levels are welcome, beginning and advanced variations will be offered.
Here we will cover more advanced topics such as precise multi-layered movement, footwork, turning technique, floor work and preperation for backbends. Beginning and ending with a Yoga warm up and cool down, we will stretch and prepare the body, and each student will be encouraged and assisted in creating their own strengthening and conditioning routine to take home and practice each day, in order to help them meet their personal goals as a dancer. Bring a mat, a notebook and pen.

Location & cost break-down:

This summer, there will be two mini-sessions offered at the Hopkins Center for the Arts. The dance studio is smashing!

Check out www.bohemianunderground.net for further details and instructions on how to register. It's a great way to kick-off the hot days of summer.

Here are some details on the actual classes:

California Roll - Tribal Fusion with a Taste of San Francisco
Kick off the summer with a workshop in the most exciting and innovative style of belly dance. In this mini-session, you will learn posture, movements and attitude that create this stunning style. Isolations will be taught through demonstration and verbal breakdown in an easy to follow format. The isolations will also be strung into combinations and eventually into a complete dance to great music. Each class within the session will focus on different movements and isolations while building upon the growing choreography. It is suggested you bring along water and a yoga mat; each class will begin and end with yoga.
TIME: Saturdays at 6:00pm-7:30 pm
DATES: July 12, July 19, July 26, August 16 and August 23
COST: $12/drop-in; $50 for complete mini-session

From Mumbai to New Delhi - Introduction to Bhangra and Bollywood
Sink yourself into the allure and mystery of India. This mini-session is a great way to introduce yourself to both the high energy Bhangra dance (a folk dance of Northern India/Punjab) and the free-spirited moves of Bollywood. In each class, we will work through both Bhangra and Bollywood moves and combinations building upon a complete dance. This is not a class for the slug. You will sweat! This dance will make you laugh and realize you have never had so much fun while sweating at the same time. Come with a good supportive bra, water, yoga mat (warm up and cool down will be yoga), any knee support you may need and a 'can-do' attitude because you can do it. And you WILL love it, I promise.
TIME: Saturdays at 7:30pm-9:00pm
DATES: July 12, July 19, July 26, August 16 and August 23
COST: $12/drop-in; $50 for complete mini-session

OK so I little self promotion (perfect place for it!) and a pat on the back for little ol' me. I FINALLY got descriptions and lesson plans developed for my workshops. Here is the list. I will be teaching a few of these in the near future - and hope to present all at some point throughout the year!

msZuza Productions - 2008 Workshops

Taste of Tribal
Learn the history behind American Tribal Style (ATS) and other styles of tribal improvisation. This workshop provides an overview of the history and concepts behind this style of dance. We will then put the theory into practice with some basic fast and slow moves, transitional cues, dancer formations - and improv fun!

Adding Drama to your Dance
Drama isn’t always a bad thing - particularly in belly dance! In this workshop, Ms. Zuza will teach techniques for adding the dramatic elements to your performances. Topics include developing and evoking a persona before going onstage, dramatic facial expressions, connecting with your audience members and adjusting dance movements for dramatic effect.

Ins and Outs of Improv
The spontaneity of improvisation can add a whole new layer to your dance. Let go of your choreography! Ms Zuza will show you the fine art - and freedom - of improv belly dance. Discover some techniques for dancing spontaneously - and put some of them into practice during this fun workshop.

Hand Percussion in Belly Dance
Zils, turkish spoons, tambourines and other hand percussion can add musicality to your performance. Ms. Zuza will provide a basic overview of various hand percussion, teach some basic rhythms that work with movement, and share tips for seamless layering of dance and music. Please bring zils, if you have them, and an open mind!

Fan Fusion
One fan. Two fans. Red fans. Blue fans. Learn the basics of fan fusion Ms. Zuza style! Learn basic fan techniques - opening and closing, snaps, hand and arm techniques, dramatic poses, and single and double fan movements, Flamenco style and Japanese influence. Please bring a fan or two of any kind for this workshop. A few fans will be available to borrow from the instructor.

No one will be humiliated or made to cry, we promise! :) Consider that even if you haven't had a lot of Tribal training, you will have had 3 classes with the ladies by the time the advanced class starts. I'M even taking the class, and I'm just an average dancer, so don't be afraid! Sign up and be challenged!! :]

About Urban Gypsy
Urban Gypsy has its roots in Houston, Texas ~ where they have nurtured tribal dance and fashioned a path for other tribal troupes to emerge and grow. Sahira and Zymirrah are founding members of the troupe and also serve as its leadership. In 2006, they had the honor (& thrill!!) of being the first tribal dancers invited to teach at Ahlan Wa Sahlan, the largest bellydance festival in the world, in Cairo, Egypt. The troupe consists of six incredibly talented and dedicated dancers, passionate about bringing to life the beauty and grace of our dance.

Zymirrah & Sahira also sponsor the 3rd Coast Tribal Dance Festival annually in in Texas. They are devoted to bringing talented performers to the 3rd Coast and sharing them with those eager to study our dance.
