musancers - can we be both?

Are there any dancers who are also musicians and vice versa? What came first, what do you play, and where do you find they have most intimately complimented each other? Also, did knowledge of one either limit you in the other or free you?

The reason I ask, is because I'm a life-long dancer who has always felt music but have trouble expressing it. I drum on myself, which quickly becomes a dance, I played the piano when I was younger but more for the singing as expression than playing, and now have picked up the guitar and love it - but wonder if what's missing in my playing (as creating my own work and returning to it in music is difficult) is that my form of expression is simply movement and not music. Extending that, I've also always been drawn to all creative mediums - mosaic, drawing, quilting, sculpture but perhaps these are simply food for my movement.

Can I/we feel truly at home in both art forms as a form of expression? Are artists happy doing any art? Or can we only completely be of one form?

Just some things I'm tossing around...

(a friend asked this in another tribe, and I found it so nice I'm passing it on)

Where are you in your life as a dancer, musician, or musancer - what are you working on, struggling with, bored by, or passionate about right now?

For me, I'm connecting on a deeper level with why I do dance and allowing myself to feel that joy it brings (which has had me doing it more) and finding more ways to integrate that into what I teach. This is very raw right now, so I don't have much more to say, but that's that! I've stepped out of the performing world for awhile, and am desperately missing a musician to play with (I'm in a small town and haven't found any ... I may have to seriously go looking!)

warmly,
Lynn

a musician askes dancers (or musicians 4 dancers)

I just got a gig at my community college playing/improvising music for the dance departmant here. The first class I play for is a salsa/social dance class, which is always fun because I have a good background in this style and the songs are consistently similar. The modern dance class is another story...lost of odd meter (3/4; 7/4; 9/4; 5/4; 10/4) and interpretive playing. Today was a bit stressful, my energy and the energy of the dancers was low, I started thinking too much and not following the hands.

Any tips for practicing/playing? There are usually two other musicians I play with, and laying back in the playing is usually the best option when they are there. The other musicians are great and the vibe is usually good, I have this Virgo 4x/Capricorn Asc. problem of being too hard on myself and not laughing enough.

This is my first time playing interpretively for dancers and I would like some advice/encouragement on what I can do to be better in this setting.

Brightest ov Blessings, and PLUR

Play for us & get a free yoga class (Seattle)

Punk Rock Yoga is looking for volunteer musicians to play our Tuesday night Capitol Hill classes and our Thursday night Fremont class. You can play just one class, to try it out. We welcome musicians of all sorts - punk, jazz, Middle Eastern, you name it. The Tuesday night is a flow class, so the music can be lively, just acoustic, or amps turned down so the instructor can be heard. Minimal or no lyrics is great as well. Music does not (and we would prefer not) to be new-agey. It's a chance to have fun and experiment.

Please note, this is a volunteer gig, so there's no cash, but there are great rewards. One, you will get a pass to take a yoga class for free at a later date. Two, you get the chance to stretch your skills by following along with a group of people moving and switching gears. It's a challenge in the class to keep the music interesting enough to keep the class engaged, but not be overly distracting. Three, it's a chance to check out what yoga is all about if you have not done so. Four, and most important, you get to play for a group of respectful, welcoming and appreciative people.

If you're interested, please contact yoga-at-punkrockyoga-dot-com or visit http://www.punkrockyoga.com

Hello,

My next yoga dance fusion class, Shake Rattle & Pose, is November 3 at 7 pm on the top of Queen Anne Hill (Seattle). I have an awesome drummer lined up and I'm looking for someone to jam with him, perhaps a didgeridoo player or a zorna player.

This is a volunteer gig, played out the goodness of your heart, and to experience playing for an improv crazy fun class with lots of build up and energy spiced with dramatic pauses and quiet moments.

For more info about the class see http://www.punkrockyoga.com/yoga_dance

Please contact Kimberlee at yoga-at-punkrockyoga-dot-com if you are interested.

Cheers, Kimberlee

Please pass following info along to anyone you think might be interested.......
**OK - So, I'm passing this along for my dancer-in-crime, Asiya.**

Please join Asiya on Friday, September 8th at 7 pm at Ottoman Trading
Company for Wine, Snacks and Conversation.

Topic:
Dancing to Live Music with Hejira!!!

Asiya would like to share Don Bargiano's vision for his group with other
dancers in hopes of gaining their interest of dancing with the band.

Her goal is to put together an interchangeable group of dancers to
perform with the band and come up with a group name for those who will perform
with them on a regular basis.
To fill the dancer schedule and provide a roster for Don so they don't
have to guess who is going to show up.
Encourage our local Tribal dancers to join us.
Bring the dancers who are interested in performing with Hejira together
so we share a sense of unity and comfort when performing at local venues.

If you have any questions, please feel free to give Asiya a call at
425-220-8295 or email at asiyadance@hotmail.com

Thank you and we hope to see you there!!!!

(I'll throw in my experiences after others have been posted or if we're stuck. My hope is that we can clear through some garbage and sterotypes - and any of my biases :) - and share beautiful experiences and eventually find perfect matches and harmony. ... and lucious discussions)
