The Heron Project

I am currently building the first out of three HUGE cranes that are part of the Heron Project. The Heron Project is a large scale modular sculpture that will serve as a versatile performance space and also as a public, interactive, kinetic playground.

Six months after stealing the show at the sold out Sea of Dreams NYE party, the Mutaytor returns to San Francisco with a massive 30+ piece lineup and a bevy of fresh new music. Touring on the acclaim of their 2008 release Yelling Theatre in a Crowded Fire” the Mutaytor has grown from an electrified cabaret act into a rock-electronica monster. The songs on “Yelling Theatre” were their most elaborately crafted, instrument-packed and live-band optimized. Consequently, the show has grown accordingly from one with a musical experience to match the acts already substantial visual spectacle. Producer-composers Buck Down and Atom Smith have moved out from behind their laptops and taken positions behind guitar and keys respectively, and percussionist Brady Spindle moonlights on acoustic guitar now as well. With bassist John Avila (Oingo Boingo) turntablist Motion Potion, 3 drummers and a full horn section, the result is a musical output matched only by the energy of the visual team.

The Mutaytor fortifies this massive musical prowess with well-choreographed performances by dancers, aerialists, hoopers, contortionists and fire performers, many of whom are considered the cream of Los Angeles’s performance-art crop. The culmination of this transformation was realized at February’s sold-out “Art of Change Inaugural Ball” at LA’s Mayan Theatre, when a huge crowd delighted to the triumph of a brilliant album realized in a theatrical setting. The Mutaytor has become to modern music, what Aida was to opera.

Break Science is the culmination of a career of beat bending by its brainchild, Adam Deitch and Borahm Lee, who lends his keyboard soundscapes to Adam’s modern palate. Whether performing a DJ set with drums / programming or helming a live band, Break Science is club music in the vein of a “live mix tape,” blending live trip-hop, broken-beat, dub, drum & bass and hip-hop. Break Science takes Deitch’s hip-hop beats and flips them through drum&bass and a mesh of styles to form a live remix that pushes the boundaries of live electronic music. This is the future – where technique meets technology in a hybrid that only Adam Deitch could imagine.

Create:Fixate judges art on talent only. We request a minimum of 10 images from each artist. For quick submissions, you can email jpgs that are 72 dpi to 120 dpi or your website link. Room in Venice?

I am a musician from Portland. I'm going to be in LA for the last week of April & the first three weeks of May. I need to find a place to rent in Venice for that time. roughly one month. I know this could be difficult, but I'm hoping to NOT spend more than 500 bucks. if someone has an empty room at their place and could use some extra cash...

or what would really be sweet is if someone needs a house sitter.

I'm clean and very easy to get along with. I just need a place to crash and keep my clothes and gear safe while I do a recording session, and perform a general recon mission as I prepare to move down later in the summer.

I was at the mutaytor show the night of the burn.i saw this amazing goddess of dance! she was wearing black white and pink and dancing on the right side of the stage during the songs .I saw this amazing woman preform the sickest dance moves ever and i would just like to say wow! Thank you so much . My name is hardcore pippi and i throw dance battles at 2am at 2 oclock and i tell people all day, that if they want to see or come and dance or know some one who would like to dance it out, to be there! at the end of the week we have about 15 or so good ass dancers from all over the playa and we were talking about who we saw that could work it. Who we thought had mad skills ... to make a long story shorter ..... we saw this girl all over the playa and all voted for the same girl all great dancers that said they have never seen any one work it like her and that she won the award for Best dancer on the playa this year ! if any one knows this girl please let her know! This was amazing to watch thank you so much for your skills! loved it ! Dose any one have a vid of this preformance?

Synopsis

Carnival, tribe or mystic retreat? This big uproar for some will stay as a spiritual experience for the others. The film depicts the journey of artist David Best through the building of the “temple.” David Best dedicates this interactive artwork to the departed love ones and to the miracle of life. He’s offering his own creativity to the community. A clever anachronism, a miraculous idea and an exemplary symbol. The citizens of Black Rock City take ownership of it and write messages to their families, their friends, their departed love ones. The temple is full of tributes and becomes a sanctuary. The frenzy turns into meditation in that lost desert where the world is reborn each year from its own ashes. The original music score is as impressive as the cinematography.

Mutaytor on The Playa

Last year, I got to play Mutaytor "groupie", as I joined a random group of participants and followed around by bike (Mutatyor on art car, groupies on bikes); We'd stop at a camp or an art installation, rock our butts of for a few sets, and then off to the next stop to do it all over again. It was such a blast!

Any chance for something like that again this year?

I'll soooo be there!!!! :-)

Musicians needed for 17 piece swing band at Burningman 2008

I am Elliot Deutsch, trumpeter with The Mutaytor. Last year was my first burn. This year I am putting together a full size swing band to play a 1940's style dance event at the Circus tent in the Red Nose District on Friday night of the burn.

So far I have:
3 trumpets, 1 trombone, 1 alto saxophone, piano, bass, drums and guitar...

which means I still need:
1 trumpet, 2 or 3 trombones, 1 alto sax, 2 tenor saxes, 1 bari sax

Sight-reading ability is a must since we will not be able to rehearse on the playa. You do not have to be a seasoned professional to qualify, but you will be playing with several. This will be an unbelievably fun event and I hope you would like to be a part of it.

Dark Skies Art Festival - Fire Workshop Leaders Wanted

The Dark Skies Arts Festival is looking for a few talented fire performers who are willing to hold a couple of workshops during the festival, performing in the evening, and who are willing to have a fabulous time hanging out at the Southern Nevada regional burn. We have a very limited number of free/artist tickets available to select fire professionals by participating at Dark Skies. It's all happening June 19 to 22 in Meadview AZ. Just 107 miles east of Las Vegas. Dark Skies is being held on 80 acres of private land in a beautiful joshua tree forest
Currently we need the following workshops covered: Fire safety, intermediate and advanced poi, and all levels of contact staff. Other fire toys are welcome too. For consideration please send your name, contact info, what your talent is and how long you have been doing performing. Please include a video url (youtube etc) if you have one.

Last night was super fun

First of all, the band sounds fucking awesome.

Second, last night's show felt like 2004 for me. Maybe it was the copious amounts of vodka but even my girl posse was super impressed and can't wait to see another show.

Really well done - I had a blast and that was a damn good show.

This site began as a vision of mine somewhere around a year ago, and though it has been met with many challenges in it’s creation – with more to come, I’m sure – here it is, for you.
One of the primary goals I have for it is connecting us, all around the world. The artists, the dreamers, the people who have the power to change the world through beauty – and do. That’s absolutely everybody as far as I’m concerned, but maybe someone just needs a kick in the ass to get them going.
Please push and post this site everywhere you possibly can think of; It is the first and only of it’s kind out there as far as I know, and maybe someone has been looking for it – which is where the seed for this dream was planted. I was that person not too long ago.

Though I wish to keep away from political issues, I do want to address the numerous ways we can improve the world around us. Red, Black, White & yellow – with a Green tint. Dig what I’m saying?

TICKETS:
Tickets to The Dark Skies Arts Festival, June 19-22 at Mojave Drums near Meadview, Arizona are going on sale this Saturday 4/12/08 at twelve noon PST under the following price structure:
FIRST TIER: 75 tickets @ $75
SECOND TIER: 150 tickets @ $95
THIRD TIER: The remaining 75 tickets will be $125
Gift Tickets: we have a very limited number of gift tickets available where we trade you admission for your work on site. See below.

ATTENDANCE CAPS AND NO GATE SALES THIS YEAR
We are capping attendance at 300 and there will be NO GATE SALES this year! Advance ticket sales will cut off about a week out from the event. Under 18 with parents only, kids under 12 are free. No in-out, no pets.

Dark Skies is the southern Nevada regional burn, now to be held across the dam in Arizona! All of Burning Man’s 10 principals apply including leave no trace, no vending and the gift economy.

THEME CAMPS
We are requesting that all theme camps register and determine the minimum required amount of space that you can fit into. We are also asking most participants to drop their camping gear and park out by the front gate in order to keep the event site open and allow art cars, pedestrian traffic, and bicycles to traverse the site safely. There’s plenty of room on this site for our event, we just have to use it judiciously and creatively. Please please please register your theme camp and art so we know who’s coming!

FIRE
Dark Skies 2008 is operating in a high fire season, and in an area of pristine high desert in a beautiful Joshua Tree Forest. Dark Skies Fire Safety will be operating under the jurisdiction of Meadview Arizona Fire Dept. All final decisions regarding fire will be up to them.

• Fire performers will be allowed i/e: poi staffs breathers and all other hand held fire performance toys.
• Small propane flame effects; ie hand held puffers and small lpg flame effects with neither having a vertical flame length exceeding 10ft unless pre approved will be allowed.
• Fire barrels; fire barrels will be provided and maintained by event staff and will be in community areas.
• No personal burn barrels and fireplaces unless pre-approved in advance of the event.
• All generators used will be required to have an abc fire extinguisher and a pointed shovel within 20 ft at all times.
• Tentative fire times will be between 7pm and sunrise. Fire times will be subject to blackout in case of winds sustained in excess of 12 mph.
• All fire artists and participants must check in with DSFS. DSFS has the final say when it comes to fire of any kind.
• Smoking is to be conducted on developed and groomed areas only, no smoking is allowed in the vegetated areas of the event site. Leave no trace; never let it hit the ground.
• Fireworks of any kind are illegal and banned 100% at this event.
• All fire activities will be restricted to fire performance areas and then only at pre approved times. We will clearly mark these areas on site.

Important fire information; All fire activities may be banned in the case of a regional “red flag alert”. A red flag alert occurs when high winds regionally create a situation whereby all fire activities are banned. This is not the same as the high fire season ban which runs April 15 – Nov 15 and for which we are applying for variances too for this event. This is also NOT the same situation we had last time where CCFD “stuck it to us” at the last minute and bummed a lot of people out. Our hosts want to see fire at this event. But we have to play by their rules. Lets hope for low winds on the weekend of the event!

Some friends of mine are coming in from Austin with their traveling freak show! The show is called the 999 Eyes Freak Show and That Damned Band! I work DPW with three of the people in the show and I'm all about supporting them as they make their way around the country. They'll be playing at Safari Sam's in Hollywood on March 23rd (Sunday) at 7pm.

The entire crew has been busy with lots of plotting, scheming, toiling, smashing and repeating, and with
the last batch of corporate shows completed, we've been working hard on staying true to our name by
mutayting and keeping it fresh.

In the next few months we'll be rolling out (in no particular order):

*The new album "Yelling Theater In A Crowded Fire" features powerful and melodic songs, innovative
instrumentations and incredible guest artists. Can I just say how tight the band is now! And as with our
other albums, there will always be songs that are specifically for the live show, and others meant to be
heard on the radio or listened with headphones for a high-fidelity experience. The guys are already
working with the visual team on even more music - ass rocking as well as rhythmic and melodic new
songs to keep it fresh throughout the year.

*A new DVD packed with live concert footage, behind the scenes shenanigans and more (with a Record
Release party for the CD and DVD to be planned in LA-details coming soon)

*Offering our entire catalog as digital downloads, and most of all, releasing fresh new songs, live tracks
and remixes throughout the year. We all agree that it's been too long in between albums. The music team
is as strong as ever, and coming up with a diverse range of songs. We've come a long way from tribal
techno, and we'll keep the creative faunt open and flowing in 08.

*Launching the newly designed www.mutaytor.com with new graphics and photos from a January
shoot photographed by our beloved Pixie (www.pixievisionproductions.com) and styled by Monica and
Bryan. The site will also feature new merch designs and much more.

videoing and photographing our shows, which is something we've always encouraged. If you have some
really great footage or still shots that you'd like to send to us, and are cool with us putting it up on either
the website or possibly the DVD (with your credit of course), please contact me at
crunchy@mutaytor.com to discuss an arrangement if it ends up getting used.

If there’s specific suggestions you have that you’d like to see on the DVD, just email me. The most hits
our website gets is from our photo galleries and the cast pages as the group is so wonderfully diverse.
We’ll be putting short video cast pages on the DVD that each one of us will get to film and edit – it’ll be
fun to see just what each person wants to do to describe themselves. But feel free to keep in touch via

There's so much more to come, but know that though we've been quietly recording, editing and

Dark Skies Fire Arts Festival!

Greetings and much dusty love from the Dark Skies Fire Arts Festival!

Currently we are waiting on the cost recovery numbers from the BLM and costs from Lincoln County on top of those. Once we have all of that we will be able to produce a working budget and price the tickets logically (who knew?).

We will then announce the start of ticket sales. The tickets are printed and boy are they purty! It’s been somewhat quiet around here at DS HQ the past few months but rest assured that the hamsters are working overtime on this year’s event. We have much to announce, we have much to discuss, we have many needs from you the community as well. This is just a short note to let you know that the dates and location have been set.
June 19-22, 2008 and yes it will be on Delamar Lake in Lincoln County.

Flowing Towards LA

Hi y'all,

I'm on my way to LA to attend the Masque Ball ala Space Island. I'm originally from Seattle and haven't spent much time in LA.
I'm currently making my leisurely gypsy-esque way to Tucson where I plan to attend the Gem Show at the end of January. I want to spend some days in LA looking around. I have a few friends here to stay with a little and a friend who is dj'ing at the pahartay--but that's about it (I'm used to having a fluffier cushion of buddies). So I thought I'd put out a little heads up in case anyone wants to steer me towards any events, people, places or things that I might like.

I'm a certified yoga instructor and Reiki therapist and I'm also a painter--I'm so into giving yoga/reiki sessions for trade or on a sliding scale, or doing mural work, commissions and portraits. I also do live painting at shows with various bands throughout Seattle and want to expand on this (ask for more details on this), and am open to all sorts of performance art ideas and installation/collaboration work.

and guidelines in an effort to standardize safety requirements within our
industry. These safety guidelines are to be implemented in the first

offered to allow us participate in the design of these standards.
Organizations such as the Safety Advisory for Fire and FX in Entertainment
(SAFFE)and members of the Pyrotechnics community have offered to provide
guidance or advice in the different methods of organizing ourselves and
interfacing with regulatory and enforcement entities such as the Fire
Department.

This *_Wednesday, December 12, 2007_* a Town Hall Meeting has been called to
inform the community and discuss the formation an organization comprised of
members representing the interests of the Los Angeles fire community.

create our own guidelines that address issues, such as safety, performance
standards, etc. It is of the utmost importance that we collectively decide
this before it is decided for us*****

In Addition, there is a new e-mail discussion list for
fire artists and people who are interested in fire performance in the Los

Muties at Decom

Sadly, Mutaytor will not be performing at Decom. But Atom's group Brain Garden will. They will be performing at the Clownarchy stage at 7:30. Be sure to come out to enjoy thier music and visuals. They will be followed by Nic the Neck from Cirque Berzerk and then Gooferman, the all clown band. If you see any drunken, obnoxious clowns running around, good chance they are Muties too. If it ain't them, it's probably ME.

We will also have a giant clown waterballoon slingshot, clown bondage, a kazoo parade, enough blacklights to blind you, and...oh yeah, the rest of Decom.

When should Dark Skies 08 be held

DARK SKIES 2008 DATES, WE NEED YOUR INPUT!

Greetings, salutations, warm fuzzy cuddle hugs and sonic booms from Dark Skies!
We need your input on matters of scheduling next years event.

Suppose that we only had two weekends to choose from for next years Dark Skies. The third weekend in May, or the third weekend in June. Suppose also that for production costs, read: ticket prices, fire art and public safety that we were going to move the event up to Delamar Dry Lake in Lincoln County, NV which sits at 4700 feet above sea level. Nothing is written in stone yet, we are exploring all options, and asking your opinion on things before the permit apps go into either BLM field office.

Here are our thoughts on the matter of the weather and things Burning Man related...
In May, the Delamar site could be chilly and maybe even wet (from BLM), and in June it could be hot but most likely dry. To put the event in mid May puts us square in the middle of the regional event season. Going in May *could* mean that we experience some rather chilly temps, but it gets us away from Burning Man. It also however puts us where a lot of Burners, artists, and rangers may have to pick and choose what events they want to attend. We’re trying to look at all sides of this.

The biggest decider in this question may be Mother Nature herself.

What will the weather be like on Saturday at Dark Skies ’08? (the Delamar option)

Here’s some casual number crunching based on ten years of weather data for the Delamar site:

Third Saturday in May, 10 year temperatures for Alamo Nevada, subtract >< 4 degrees for Delamar lake due to 1000 foot higher altitude.
AVG LOW: 43 (sunrise)
AVG HIGH: 77 (3pm)
10 YEAR LOW LOW: 33
10 YEAR HIGH HIGH: 91
10 YEAR LOW HIGH: 66
10 YEAR HIGH LOW: 59

BOTTOM LINE for May: Cooler, one week after Toast! Almost one month before Element 11, two weeks before LIB, middle regional in the season,. If we go in May, it could be as low as 29f and our high could be as low as 62f. That particular f stands for ‘f**k me its cold’.

1O YEAR LOW LOW: 45 (sunrise)

BOTTOM LINE for June: Warmer, two weeks after Element 11, two months before Burning Man, last regional of the season. If we go in June, it could be as high as 96f and as low as 49f. We’re getting closer to Burning Man, a mistake we made in Oct ’06 that we don’t intend to repeat. However, in this case we’re before the main event so it could be a great shakedown cruise for art cars, theme camps, and playa art.

Mutaytor on Monday Night Football?

So I was watching the Bengals Monday Night Football game, and just before the start of the third quarter as the players took the field again, there was a pause in the commentators voices and you could hear the music at the stadium.

I'm not sure if the Taytors have been to Baltimore or Cincinnati, but I swear I heard the beginning of Give a Little More being played. Right down to the echo effect on the "Aye Aye Aye" and timing of the kick.

Public Service Announcement

This message goes out to all DJs, dancers, instrumentalists, singers, and performers who like to stage dive. A certain unnamed DJ not named Blue or Porter Tinsley thought it would be a good idea to jump off the stage onto the crowd right before the Mutaytor set. What he didn't realize was that everyone had just gotten fresh drinks for the upcoming show, and most of us were double fisting it. Those of us that didn't have full hands from drinks had cameras...

So what we had was quite a comical scene where everyone tried not to spill their drinks all over each other (unsuccessfully, might I add), and said DJ very slowly, very ungracefully, at shit as he got splashed with everyone's drinks.

For future reference, people like to fill up their drinks right before a headliner, if you want to stage dive, wait until AFTER the headliner, we'll have finished them and be all amped up and excited to carry your sexy ass above us instead of cringing in horror.

to interpretive dance clowns, in addition to all the surprises we'll
find once we get out there. And hey, we even have outriggers for
aerial acts - a ring on one side, a trapeze on the other.

Drums at BRC

I can't think of anyone better to ask than Mutaytor about drum cleaning procedures/rituals after Burning Man. I am planning on bringing a drum set and a multi-percussion rig this year. Are there any special consideration when bringing cymbals? I know the playa dust is alkali and wreaks havoc on metal and the hot, arid environment is bad for wood, plastic and natural skins. What precautions, if any, do you guys take?
