Has a date for Myschevia 2008 been set? Is it still going with Columbus Day weekend? Meaning October 9 - 13, 2008?

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 10:32 PMHonestly, there may not be a Myschievia 2008. I'd love to be proven wrong, but we seem to lack the time, money, and energy to pull it off this year. And frankly, after the year I've had, I'm not so averse to taking the year off.
Very few people want to do any planning until after Flipside, and that's only if they're not going to Burning Man. This year, I think we're going to lose a lot of Myschievians to Dadara's project. I'm not upset about that by any means, but let's please be realistic. If we have it in October, we're going to be scrambling all summer long to get it done half-assed and then wonder why only 200 people show up. I don't think we ever want to be the size of Flipside, or even to a point where we have to set a cap on tickets, but it's frustrating to have no growth at all after three years. If we're serious about this event, I think we need to do some more serious planning. We need a real foundation, and people who really have the time to put into this. It CAN almost be a full time job, but if we're smart about our planning I believe we can spread out enough of the work so that no one person is feeling overwhelmed. I would be willing to take a year off if it meant we could come back with a truly solid, kick-ass burn event that would put even Flipside to shame. :)
At the last Town Hall in January, several people seemed unhappy with the early October dates, so we decided to put up a poll and let the community decide whether or not to change them. But our mistake was that we never identified who that "someone" was going to be to put up a poll, nor did we set a deadline...which is why, 4 months later, we still have no date for Myschievia.
So, what would y'all like to do?

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 2:47 PMI would love to see Myschevia moved to late March or early April. It's just so dang close to BM in the fall - everyone's always going to be spent in terms of cash and energy.
We COULD have an invitational camping event in the fall every year, too.
-
Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 8:29 PMWhats wrong with only 200 close friends? or just 100?
why worry about growing?
maybe less infastrucure? less work. heck do a volunteer effigy, and if no effigy oh well. Just supply land, and some porta potties.
what about a place closer to DFW? smaller place all ready for a huge campout?
Dates dont matter....july or jan, if its a burner get together you will have people that want to go and those that cant or dont.
Dont try and build BM in north Texas. Supply a place for people to build the event they want. Hell we dont know what we want, it will just come to something.
I dont want to take a year off....if nothing else we have a group campout.

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 9:35 PMI'm with ESE!! I definitely think we have the local interest and a (rapidly) growing population of burners and burner-friends to support a regional. As to the size and shape, date and location of such an event, I'm sure we each have divergent visions and expectations. For me, Myschievia is much like a family reunion, and quite honestly, I'm 90% cool with how things are. My biggest problem? I've yet to do much of the heavy lifting- I've never made a work weekend, and hardly been more than a cheerleader.
I like October for our event, but moving the date certainly wouldn't stop me from attending. Each year, I hope to contribute more to Myschievia, but I'm ashamed to admit that thus far, I've put alot more attention toward Flipside and the Playa. Is there a way to improve participation, not just mine, but generally?
I think a closer location would have alot of benefits, much as I love the current Myschievia location. It's not accidental, I think, that Flipside has always been within one hour of Austin.
Bottom line, I'm not ready to scrap or shelve Myschievia- even if it's just a campout in a field with no effigy and all the same people, I think we should keep it going. Am I ready to join the LLC? No. But I'm ready to devote more time and energy to our regional, and I think others are as well. Maybe it's time for others to pick up the slack, and give some rest and support to those who have done the lion's share of the work thus far...
Hopefully and Myschieviaingly,
Major Tom

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 9:00 PMI think its possible to do an event like Myschevia. Myschevia is fun. The timing is okay. It makes for a damn good decom after that thing in the desert. If the goal is to grow somewhat, more people commited to it are needed. I don't know that you want to go through the trouble of added or changing the LLC. What about the equivalent of Flipside's Combustion Chamber? Maybe it's not time to meet weekly like the CC. Even so if a larger group met monthly it would be more planning action which should lead to projects, etc that would lead into Myschevia in spite of other events, projects, etc.
For myself, I'd be all for being a part of an advisory committee for Myschevia. I don't see myself going to that thing in the desert after 2008. I'd like to concentrate on events like Myschevia and Flipside. Time of year? I like October. I don't like that it has been sharing the same weekend with Chinati Open House (the reason I started this thread...). -

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 9:47 PMWould one week later make a difference? October 11th is the 2nd Saturday, isn't Myschievia usually the first?
I agree with Wayward about a Combustion Chamber- that's a great idea. I'd be on that, if I'd be of use. Good input, folks. Keep it comin'!!
Concurringly,

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 11:25 PMEven tho last year was my first...may I add my .02....
I concur with ESE...why worry about growth? Why compare the event with others? Why not do something for those who wish to be there, and not worry about the rest?
I, personally, had a friggin' blast at Myschievia. And part of that, honestly, was that I was not compelled to do too much work. I tend to overwork myself most of the time, and not play enough. 200 people is big enough for me. Even at the 1st Flipside decomp - the supposedly canceled one - was amazing with less than 100 people there.
Bigger ain't always better...tho this IS Texas, LOL.
I love the feeling of "family" - if you don't know everyone at the beginning of the event, you probably do by the end...

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 7:39 AMI love Myschievia. I've been to three and was hoping this would be a fourth. Everyone involved has done a kickass job especially considering the other big events that come before it in the year. To me it's a great way to wrap up the 'Burn Season' and even though I only made one night this last time I had an amazing time.
It would be sad for it not to happen this year but I can understand those wanting to take a break? Outside of the LLC, maybe others should be given the chance to run with it while the hard workers of years past take a breather? Assuming there are others that can. -
-
Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 8:36 AMI am just going to re-emphasize my point here or restate it.
I believe there are people who are interested, willing and capable of putting this on. It is just a matter of getting them started, that is, giving them direction and authority. Presumably that groundwork and group selection would start with the LLC and grow from there. I might be oversimplifying this and maybe this sort of approach was even tried... Just grasping here as I would really like to see Myschevia carry on.
My .02 on the location and time of year is that I think they are both great. Given most winters are mild here I think pushing back into even November is possible. I can say that East Texas in the warmer months is miserably humid.

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 2:15 PMfor momentum to form, you should pick a date and get the ball rolling. it's an "if you build it they will come" kind of thing. pick a date, and people will start getting involved.
there is always some cause for concern with any date you pick. Columbus Day does conflict with another regional up here, and there are probably more elsewhere. it's not really an ideal date except for the fact that some people get a 3 day weekend with their jobs.
nyc does their decom in early november. this past year it was cold as hell outside, but we pulled it off anyways. and it's just about the perfect amount of time away from the desert for people to not feel rushed going into it.
i'd be all for the spring, except for the weather issues Vern mentioned about the new land.
and just for my personal selfish reasons, i'd like to see the event moved away from Columbus Day, b/c as long as i play with HMB, i have a conflicting brass band festival that same weekend in Boston :)
so how about it? to move the event or not - register your preference here:

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 10:03 PMThanks y'all for the words of support....I've been having a really, really bad month so forgive the gloomy-doomy tone. I'm a little better now thanks in part to my brother, who is moving back to Texas and coming to Flipside for the first time since he first took us in 2002! W00t! So yes, we really are going to FS, and to make sure we don't overpack again, we're bringing the VW Bug this year. It it doesn't fit in the Bug, we ain't bringin' it. :P
Let's do the poll just to make sure, but if y'all think we can pull it off by October, then let's...I've always liked having it in October. I just don't want to do it by myself and it sometimes feels that way when everyone else is making plans to go to Burning Man. So maybe if you plan to go to Burning Man, you should either NOT be a lead, or make sure you have someone ready to step in while you're gone. But that's a minor beef.....my MAJOR concern is that we have almost no capital to start with, so we need to start ticket sales EARLY. Like July or even earlier if we can. I think that will be more productive than an emergency fundraiser which we really don't have time to do. I'd rather focus our time and energy on the event.
I do like the idea of having a monthly planning meeting, if for no other reason than to make sure we follow through with what we say we're going to do. And I agree, it has to be a REAL meeting...no Lee Harvey's during Dog Days, no loud music. I'm not against a bar as long as it's quiet and we're not getting lit during the meeting. I'd like to have one before FS to see what we can do to promote Myschievia during FS....then focus on planning right after FS.
Thanks for the poll, Lego...it can be tweaked and made official without a whole lot of extra effort. We just need to get the ball rolling. -

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 10:45 PMYay!! Ya'll are coming to Flipside!! Sorry for the gloomy month, sweetie- I think there's alot of that going around.
I'm totally down for a monthly NTXB meeting. I'm also down with helping more, but agree that those of us going to the Playa shouldn't take leadership roles, at least not without an understudy.
If doing ticket sales early will help, why not do it? I'll buy two right now!! The only thing I ask is we leave the ticket window open until a few weeks before the event- one of the cool things about Myschievia is that it's accessible in ways that Flipside isn't. And while I understand the desire to keep the event affordable, if cashflow is a problem, maybe we up the ticket price $5 to we have a bit more flexibility?
I suggest Sunday May 11th as a possible meeting date- the Interfuse folks will be back and it's not right before the Flipside?
Hopefully-Helpingly,
Major Tom -

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 1:07 PMMajor Tom, you said:
"And while I understand the desire to keep the event affordable, if cashflow is a problem, maybe we up the ticket price $5 to we have a bit more flexibility?"
I'd vote for $10 of increase. We have to give people enough notice, but I think the tickets need to cost more for several reasons:
1) Overall costs. The dollar is going to shit and fuel is sky high. We can't help what it costs to have porta potties delivered or work done on the land. But it costs MORE. It's a fact.
2) It is more expensive to run a smaller event per person, and it's more expensive to get an event started. Infrastructure costs money. We're building an event here, and it takes cash to get some things done. -
-
Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 1:24 PMI concur with your suggestion, DeeDee. Especially with the caveat of enough warning. I don't know the full details of our cash-flow situation, and understand there are different opinions on such things, but if there's a way to preclude such situations in the future, whether by policy or a cash-buffer, I think it's best to plan ahead.
What say you all?
Discussingly,

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 2:04 PM
I dont have an issue with a small increase, but
can we look at ways to cut costs also? How much did we spend to bring in a fire truck from HOuston? and now diesel over 4 bucks a gallon?
maybe just have small bonfire? Or work with local volunteer fire dept? think outside the money box.
I hate to start excluding some because of the cost going too high. While some of us scoff at 75 bucks for a ticket others that is 1/4 of there rent. If we are just spending it lilly nilly thats not fair.
but yes in grand sceam of things we should raise the price a bit to get a cusshion, to ease up on the LLC sweating bullets.
Also limit it to 250 tickets (or 300 or 200 or whatever). then you have a set budget. for 250 people we will need x number of potties that equals x dollars. so we need this much money...
all rambling.

woot gonna see you at flipside Geo! and the bro also!
I am not going to the big burn. hummm guess I got some time. bad thing is I live an hour west of Dallas, makes it expensive to drive over for meetings and time consuming. Also driving to land is even more so.
I dont mind and actually want to help but not sure what is needed and what I can do.
I say you/we/us/them can have it in October. Not everyone an make it but such is life.
I am going to Darkskies outside of vegas in June. they lmited there tickets to 300. its not the size its how well you use it. least thats what I am told!

Mon, April 21, 2008 - 2:29 PMGeo et al -
More relative newbies here. Myschievia was Duane and my first DFW burner event and, thanks to deedee and Marshall, our introduction to many of you wonderful people. I, too, would be sad to see it go. I haven't been to Flipside or Burning Man, just an event in California. So I can't compare and contrast like many others. But I have been attended and been involved in a lot of events professionally and have to say that Myschievia was extremely well run. We also thought it was a great size - particularly as an introduction to the community. I also recall a lot of other first-timers, so it clearly grew the community if not ticket sales.
We're unlikely to be able to head out to the land to do the work weekends (especially if we haven't finished remodeling our house yet). But I would be willing to put in some time planning and herding cats to provide some relief to those who have shouldered the full responsibility to date. I also love the idea of a regularly scheduled planning session. What if we converted some of the currently impromptu lunches and brunches to that end? It doesn't look like we'll swing attending Burning Man, so we'd even be around while much of the gang vanishes to the Playa. Powers that be, feel free to PM to get me involved. Duane comes along as a bonus. He can lift heavy stuff.
As for the date, you gals and guys who made this event what it is should get to choose the dates in my book. The rest of us are along for the ride. You can't make everyone happy, and it feels like trying to do so is dragging you down and stealing some of the joy for you.
Oh, and we volunteered as rangers already dagnabit. And Geo's gonna train us. [pout]

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 4:41 PMEven though I doubt I'll be at whatever the "October event" is called this year (Chinati - I'm going - this is the year, and it THIS point it looks like a road trip with a Dutch artist and his grilfriend ... and still hopefullly Wayward ... and of course, my sweetie) .....
I agree with the posts below ....
Myschevia has its own vibe. Let it become what is meant to be on its own. Make decisions not to "make it bigger", but to make the event grow in its meaning to those that attend. The spirit it generates should be the food that brings it sustenance.

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Sat, April 19, 2008 - 4:07 PMAs another relative newcomer, here are my thoughts: I really enjoyed both Flipside and Myschevia last year, and part of what I enjoyed about each was how different in size they were from each other. While BM has big rewards, it also requires a bigger committment than I can make at this point in my life -- otherwise I'd love to also experience something on such a grand scale. Likewise, I'd love to see some smaller, more informal local burner camping weekends. I think they all have their place.
I was really impressed with how well Myschevia 2007 was done and planned, and hope to attend every year in the future. Moderate growth, moderate reduction, it doesn't matter much to me. It was a great success, and doesn't HAVE to grow to remain a success.
The timing is great in terms of potential for decent camping weather -- but I'd go regardless of the weather.
I used to plan an annual river trip for about 50 people, and have also been a part of other groups. It is usually true that it gets hard to keep people involved and doing their share of the work -- but make it clear (as you are doing) that the event is at risk, and more people are likely to step up and work to keep an event that is of such personal value to them.
Just my opinions....thanks and keep up the good work!

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 5:01 PMI had no idea there was any -serious- activity going over here on the tribe... I always monitor the planning email list. I'll try to talk to as many of these things as I can, but I'm not able to watch tribe consistently....
Columbus day is the second monday in October. This monday moves from as early as the 8th (2007) to as late as the 14th. (13th due to leap year for 2008)
It cycled back one week this year, so it is later in the year again, like it was the first year when we chose that weekend.
We went through the entire calendar to find a weekend that did not conflict with another tradition in our community.
Pushing any further back in October risks hitting the first cold blast or freeze, which usually hits by Halloween or just after...
The land we are on enjoys an incredible relationship with our landowners, and is a rare thing in the world of burn events.
If Myschievia were held in the rainier part of the year, things become very different on our current land. The land is prone to extreme floods that can destroy culverts and vehicles and worse... there is only one exit on that land. Think about it from a safety point of view.
The distance from DFW is a bit far, but this provides a benign filter that keeps it from being too easy to attend... Ie people that might not have any interest in playing along with our community standards. Also, by the nature of TX weather, Cass county is one other last counties in the entire state to enter into a burn ban during dry season or drought conditions. We we under threat of jail time if we had fires our first year when we were in Eastland county.
As for resources, yes the LLC is spread thin. Each year, one of us seems to dealing with things in the default world that make it very difficult to commit as fully as we would like to. It has not stopped us yet. I personally had a difficult time last year because I was moving, working and also went to BM for 4 days. I did not have any internet access until the week Myschievia was over, and 80% of keeping it together is done online. I do not foresee any obstacles like these to be in my life this year, so I am quite committed to putting on the event.
Changing the date involves many factors, and is not necessarily something we can snap our fingers to make happen in one years time.
Aside from that, we have no real leads for any closer land where we could burn, be loud, and all the other stuff that happens.
I do not want to ignore the input of the community... It is a difficult time of year to work on this with all eyes on flipside in 30 days... There are 5 months following flipside to put on the event... We tried this year to use the off season to gather input, hold town hall meetings and the like, but alas our community is exploding and even the off season has become very busy for our social calendar. Putting together a meaningful polling solution was chosen, but the momentum was lost... This happens in any volunteer organization... We just must strive to recover from it gracefully and find a way to work through it anyway.
We dont have self sustaining support structures like flipside enjoys, but we still try to build them... Ranger/Medical org, a webteam that is not overworked and has enough time to volunteer to carry it... FS enjoys a ready to go earth guardian crew and a legacy of leads who have taken on many different roles, as well as trained/knowledge transferred to new persons taking the role. Filside never has to worry about having enough folks for work weekends... We can fill these positions each year, but often the knowledge transfer falls back onto the LLC and a few core people... We get overworked quickly, end up taking on too many tasks, etc... But we believe in it, and have kept going... Are we world class managers? No. Do we always know how to delegate or the best way to bring in fresh people and viewpoints? No. Do we try our best? I absolutely try to...
Right now, one of our LLC is flipside's DAFT lead... So we wont have his ear until after flipside... That is huge and exhausting work and we are proud of it... But alas, in a burn community available volunteer enegery is way more volatile than the stock market, but we get by... Even at the LLC level...
I hope this helps answer some questions/concerns... Perhaps we need a monthly community night that steers clear of the party atmosphere so that serious things can come up in a conversational context and have their voice... I would make every effort to attend something like this each month if we got it going.
Looking forward FS... My house has become a community workspace, and it takes a lot of energy to keep it clean the rest of the time...
Tentative Columbus Day weekend event would be Oct 9th-13th

Wed, April 23, 2008 - 7:08 AMI vote for something we discussed at the last meeting and at that time, had much support:
We do a "soup-style" campout over Columbus day (no Rangers, no porto-lets, no effigy, no ticket sales unless to cover something for the land owners, no insurance) this fall (2008).
We plan on having Mischievia each year as the FIRST Burn of the year, either in late March or early April every year, starting in 2009. -

I'm surprised Vern hasn't chimed in on that, but I already know what he's going to say. He's never liked the idea of un-Rangered burner gatherings. If someone wants to throw one, just know that it will NOT be an official NTXB event.
Anyway, we already have work weekends....

Re: Dates for Myschevia 2008
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 11:15 PMI see (Myschievia Light) to be a placeholder for the official event's legacy if a view to serious planning for another date or place emerges.
In the event that North Texas Burners et aliae wish for no other date or place then we should do what we do for the fourth time.
What is probably clear is that there will be no other Myschievia or NTXB any earlier than Columbus Day Weekend unless it was of the small soupy model. Well I guess that is not actually off the table. Anybody body wanna pull for July 4th? Sounds impossible, right? Well making it possible would mean being over a year away from Myschievia. I know there is plenty of supplements to kill the time for the next Myschievia to synchronize with the Burner Calender, but Myschievia work weekends or NTXBM decomp at Huges Springs would be some good ones. -

Fri, April 25, 2008 - 4:56 PMANY EVENT NEAR THE RAINY SEASON CARRIES THE VERY GRAVE RISK OF SEVERE FLOODING AT ARMADILLO ACRES.
The top of the hill is not suitable for an event at this time, nor would it be safe to allow cars into the interior part of the land except to unpack.
We have seen plain evidence on the lower field of floods that were at least 3-4 feet deep, among other indications that it can get worse than that. I saw the culvert after it was washed out, fallen trees, etc. The upper field also floods.
having said this, many fewer counties are under burn ban that time of year, but there are no viable alternate locations known at this time.
