Noise at Myschievia

topic posted Tue, August 5, 2008 - 2:28 PM by  Geo
OK.....

I don't know where people got the idea that Myschievia was like summer camp. When did we start having "quiet hours??"

THERE ARE NO QUIET HOURS AT MYSCHIEVIA. I personally LOVE the Sunday-at-7am cacophany that's become a fine Myschievia tradition! If you don't like it, the Survival Guide says your choices are to wear earplugs or move to the Quiet Zone. You're welcome to ask your neighbors nicely to tun it down, but honestly....what do you expect if you choose to camp on the field near the effigy??? When I camped on the Esplanade at Burning Man, did I bitch because my tent was between a raver camp and a 24/7 live band stage? No! Why?? Because we knew what we were getting ourselves into. (Plus we were so tired, we slept like babies every night.)

So, I'm putting this out there as fair warning.......if you're coming to Myschievia to get some sleep, DON'T camp on the lower field.
If you do, you will NOT like the music I play at 7am!

    :)

I'm all about music, spoken word, ambient jungle sounds, even the train chugging by. What I can't get behind is droning static (aka noise) at any given time, at any location - near the Effigy, at Greeters, in Quiet Zone. I understand that there is, or can be, subliminal messages hidden in the noise, but for the love of all that is holy, add some perceptible value to your "art" and inspire something besides loathing.

Ah boardhead... I'm going to cry (insert smiley emoticon here). The droning static isn't droning static. It might seem like that but there's more to it than that. I listen to and create tons of "noise" but would never just listen to static. That's pretty boring. Personally, 80's pop and technoravedrumnbreakbeat drives me insane. I find so much beauty and power in noise. I try to be respectful of my neighbors, though.

While I go to pretty good lengths to accommodate the general consensus as to volume level, and I do try to tailor my music to my audience - it is part of being a decent DJ, to read the crowd - I understand the need to keep what you seek to create somewhat "pure"

Now my definition of pure art and yours may differ - alot. And figuring out where my right to punch ends and your face begins is the delicate and sometimes chaotic dance that makes all this so delightfully difficult, yet quite amusing at times.

And for all those "quiet, please!" types I can only say this: if you you like quiet, orderly, restful camping...what the hell are you doing at a burn?

I know that none of this is directed at me specifically...but I do have a horse in this race, and have had some experiences recently that go right to the heart of this debate. You see, I honestly try, on occasion, to play morning sunrise sets. They are some of the most magical of moments for me. The music I play is ethereal and certainly uplifting...but it is psytrance. And not everyone appreciates such music as much as I do. I made one such attempts at decom...and was not only ridiculed by a certain crowd and told that I am a selfish person, but also had my equipment threatened by someone else - who shall remain nameless.

I acquiesced to turning the system down some in the name of goodwill, but refused to change the music type I was playing. It was my sound system, and my music, and there were people on the dancefloor...so I saw no need to change my course, so to speak. And although the whole thing put a damper on an otherwise beautiful morning...I think I made the right call.

While I understand the need to figure out a way to all coexist in the somewhat close quarters, at least sonic-ly speaking. I just don't know that what equates to censorship is the right way to go about it. It just doesn't ring true to the concepts of BM.

The question remains: Where does the "general consensus" and "getting along" end and censorship begin?

I cannot say I know the answer.

how many sound systems are we expecting this year?

Im curious about soundsystems as well and what djs might be playing. I went to Myschievia I think 2-3 years back and only saw one soundsystem with a few djs. I live in the Tyler/Longview area (about 30 - 45 mins from where that Myschevia was) and am part of a collective of djs who promote intelligent electronic music. We have multiple djs that spin all genres of Psy (Dark,Full On,Goa) as well as Downtempo (Psychill,Ambient,PsyDub,Dubstep,Trip Hop). If people are going to have some soundsystems and arent against having more djs (not ravers as mentioned) I would be interested in bring out some local talent as well as my own soundsystem. Like I said im not talking about the Rave crew im talking about intelligent organic electronic music and the people pushing it locally. Even if people arent embracing djs this year im still thinking about coming out for a second experience.

I think they'll be probably 3 or 4 PA's out there, maybe more. Sunkyst is planning on bringing his big-ass system out and from past experience, I can tell you he wont want to be behind the table 24-7... but I don't speak for him. As for those genres you mention, I doubt anyone has any problem listening to any of that.

Basically, if you want it there, bring it there (but as a non-Myschevia-virgin, you knew that!)!!

We are super hyped and cant wait to come out this year and be involved in the annual ntx burn. Hope to meet/remeet some of you guys at myschievia this year, it looks like its gonna be a blast. Much Respect to you guys and im glad it falls right around my Bday (Oct 14th) Wahoooo extra bday fun!!!

Noise, glorious noise....Give it to me all day and all night...at Myschievia. DJs, people laughing, men clanging on old appliances. ....SK....I hope you can drown out the men clanging on burned out kitchen aids at 5am! Battle of the racket, no holds barred.

    Quiet Hours?

I'm a newbie and every single event that I have been to have never even advertised quiet hours...Hell even the Quiet Zone they warn you is just less noise than the other areas. Aren’t we supposed to sleep Sunday night and into Monday to regain what we lost in sleep? That's what I always do. Besides sleep deprivation makes us all so much more interesting :P

Flipside looks dumb for a lot of sound rules. I haven't read this thread yet. My question is when are we building the effigy and can we do it in Denton. I think we will deal with this when we get out there. Seriously, who cares how much noise we make I never notice. I surely didn't notice no fucking car alarm. Don't play the car alarm for more than 3 minutes. Whatever.

Yes, you are responsible for your own experience... the gray area for me is where does your experience stop and mine begin?

You have the right to scream racial slurs into a megaphone at 7:00am every morning directly at my tent... and I have the right to get out of my tent and beat your ass. Is there one here that is more right than the other?

I embrace morning DJ sets, the sound of radiant Love coming from the couple (errr... group?) in the tent next door, insane laughter and sobs in the same breath, even George W. sampled over inappropriate questions not relating to his answers... all while attempting to fall asleep. And YES, I do set my sleeping quarters up quite a ways away from GenPop, so it's sort of a mute point for me personally... BUT, if everyone camped as far out as I do, there would be that much more sound generated in "quiet camp" that it would have to move yet further away, which leads to such a disbursement of camps.... ah fuck it.

this whole reply is mute... as is the thread... just use common sense people... be considerate of other people... you aren't the only Freak out living large in the piney woods.

      missin sleep already,
      bh

I agree with ya BH. I just wished there was some objective way to gauge what is acceptable, and what isn't....as it is that I will likely be the one with the largest sonic "dick" on the block. I would like to hear what we say as a community. I can, honestly, overpower any noise source there. But do we really want that? Might, in my book, doesn't make right...nor does a majority have an absolute right to rule the minority.

Maybe I am approaching this far too philosophically - I have that tendency, lol.

Well really, I started this thread so we could talk about it. My primary motivation is to reduce the complaints that the Rangers have to deal with, so I'd love it if we could negotiate an agreement ahead of time. I was hoping that designating "Loud" and "Quiet" zones might be one solution for alleviating it, but it may not be the best solution for our group.

It has also been suggested that we have not "quiet" hours, but maybe "not-so-loud" hours would be acceptable. We'd have to define what "not-so-loud" means....nothing above 50 db? 80db? People can scream all they want, just not into bullhorns at those hours? Bang on pots and pans all you want, but do it in the middle by the effigy, not by someone's tent? We really should leave it up to common sense, but we all know not everyone possesses the same amount. Hence, the need to define our expectations.

I think if anyone has a complaint, they should bring a non-lethal weapon of choice and armor of choice to duel the person they are complaining to. Whoever wins obviously has God on their side and should be able to do whatever the fuck they want.

Either that, or leave all complaints in the COMPLIANT CENTRE and DOOM will deal with them in a similar manner.

I was actually just posting about this topic on another board. The way to figure shit out is to talk to each other. If someone is being too loud for you, go talk to them. There may or may not be a solution that works for everyone involved. It could be as simple as they didn't know how loud they were being. It could be that they wandered off and left their music on. It could be anything but neither person will know until they talk.

What I do with my neighbors here in my building is say to them, "Here's my number. If I'm too loud, let me know." The beauty of it is that I cab be as loud as fuck without ever wondering if I'm being too loud because THEY WILL TELL ME. Now I don't worry about being too loud and they don't worry about me being too loud because we both have a way to fix it.

We may want to "borrow" your system to choreograph the burn.... That could be a very powerful thing, done right.... Though not all of it may be what you might normally play.... But, this could provide a way to reduce the chaos of the burn, bring some sanity and safety to something that could use any extra edge it can get...

"this whole reply is mute... as is the thread... just use common sense people... be considerate of other people... you aren't the only Freak out living large in the piney woods. "

Be considerate but also if you have a problem with what you think is excessive noise, go talk to whoever's doing it and maybe resolve it to your mutual satisfaction. (This isn't directed specifically at you, Boarhead).

And while I like to dance past dawn as much as the next person, I did get really annoyed that there seemed to be loud music THE WHOLE TIME as if we need to have loud music the whole time. We don't. I don't mean let's have certain times that are quiet. I mean that just because music is good it doesn't mean we have to have it blasting annoyingly loud and/or every minute of the motherfucking day.

Sorry (noob here) but so far, of the 3 camping music festivals (1 wasn't a burn event) we went to, we expected absolutely no quiet time as we understood that it was a non-stop-party. We camped further off to be able to have some wind down time and had no troubles with the noise at all. We didn't expect anyone to lower the volume for us and brought ear plugs just in case we needed them - although we never have. And I have to say that hearing music constantly through the night and the next day is the way we live anyway so it's a beautiful continuation of our lives to someone else beat for the moment. Southern Junktion, which was my first festival, had early morning chill drums at about 8 am. The sound wafting through the trees, drifting on the breezes, slowly waking up the masses for their trek home on Sunday morning was one of the most spiritually moving moments for me! I would hate to have someone who chose their campsite in the noise zone yet wanted quiet time to deprive someone else of the same spiritual magic that we experienced. Choose your camp area wisely would be my advise... If you want some quiet private time... camp further off... if you want non-stop-action... camp close by the action... but don't camp in a noise zone and then grumble about it.

Just my two cents < and my word that you won't hear us bitching about noise! > In fact Geo, like I said we're noobs but we'd love you come by your camp and listen to your early am set... please let us know where we can find you!

Mistress Sybs (and my hero, Davizm!)

    =hugs= see ya at Myschievia!

I totally agree. I know I'm fairly new to the smaller events, but one of my favorite things about burning man was always the incredible ruckus in the distance that I would listen to every night when I laid down for sleeping--it was a feature, not a problem. I wouldn't want to live next door to a thumping rave camp, though, and I have always chosen my living locations accordingly.

(Until the last time, that is. I joined a new theme camp that year, and they preferred the noisy part of town... we were two camps away from the roller disco, but even that didn't keep me up nights!)

If anything, I'd say some light zoning is the way to go. that way people who want quiest at least know where they should be putting their shit.

    My 2 cents:

    Figure into the budget-

ONE LARGE TUB OF EAR PLUGS

If someone complains to the rangers gift them a pair of earplugs, give em a sleeping pill, and tell em to go to sleep and shut up.

yeah there was never any bitching about the noise at our camp in the desert. i do remember some bitch about all the piss containers laying around the camp though :)

our neighbors with the live band had some problems with their genny, they didn't even fix it because of all the piss bottles being all close to their shit.

the gage's video of wrongness was found to be quit offensive to anyone walking by...

so much for LNT... or maybe they picked up on their way out but seriously??? Piss Bottles... freaking disgusting... Maybe I don't wanna go big burn.. I was disillusioned enough over the beer can being chucked by someone in the water onto the banks into the weeds at Flipside 08 *which was my first*. I was impressed with the LNT beliefs but discovered I guess that only goes so far with some people.

The piss bottles are due to the fact that the bathrooms are nearly a mile away, and most mornings on the playa are around 40 degrees and we drank all night. Now, if I were in the creek with a beer, I would throw my empty at the banks near where my clothes were so that I could make sure that I left with it in my pocket/pack/han
