Final Site Report from Haphazard (RP from Ning)

I just received a phone call at 1:30 from Mike Putman (the guy that was driving the little wide-track dozer) to see if we got everyone out. I assured him that all bodies were out.

He told me that the rain started last night about 3am. It started raining HARD. It rained HARD all night. It rained HARD all morning. It's rained HARD all afternoon. It's raining HARD out there right now. He estimated they've had something like 8 to 11 inches so far.

He drove down 49 toward Avinger form Hughes Springs and took a look. He says that the water is at about the level of the headlights on the fire truck. Yes, you read that right, the level of the head lights on the fire truck. It's also up to the rail road tracks.

The 100% Evacuation call on Monday may have been a little heavy handed when it was made, but pulling cars out of a foot a mud is a lot easier than pulling them out of 3 feet of water.

Katie and I changed our minds and instead of trying to get out for food, then get back in for the night, then get back out again to come home in the morning, we just packed and got the hell out last night as well. I'm sitting here at my computer, dry, mostly clean, with a big cup of coffee, damn glad I'm not there right now.

Words cannot express the relief I have that every single body was off the property last night, no matter what it cost physically or financially to do it.

We'd like to thank everyone that was out there this weekend. As wet and muddy and sloppy and cold and just generally nasty as the weather was this weekend, you guys were "responsible for your own experience" and seemed to have a great time. I'm not sure that I actually heard anyone seriously complain the entire weekend. Katie is aglow from all the smiling faces, love, and friendly attitudes.

There's too many of you to thank individually, but there are a few I would like to point out specifically.

The LLC for making it happen,

All the Rangers and MEATS for keeping the event together.

All the Leads for doing what needed to be done.

Shadow and the Temple of the Steaming Pot. The gods know that we would not have made it if it hadn't been for you guys down there making your magick.

All the various people that fed us over the weekend. What can you say? Everyone wants ESEs meat in their mouth.

Speaking of which, ESE. When it came to exodus time, you threw down and became the man. You are a gentleman and a scholar, the envy of all men and the desire of all women.

Boarhead and crew for an ass-kicking FEG burn on Saturday night. (Damn it guys, aerials are supposed to go up!) :)

Demon Monk and crew for an ass-kicking FEG burn on Sunday night. (Bet it felt good to see that pile of ashes in the morning.)

All the people that kept slipping us cash to help offset the unexpected expenses.

Financially it was not the boost toward the shower houses that we hoped, but our hearts are full and life is good. We love all you freaks and if we had to bathe in mud with anyone, we were glad it was you.

Burn night procession soundtrack

As some/most may already know I have been honored with putting together some music for the procession on burn night.
To make this as inclusive as possible I was wondering if anyone had some must hear stuff that they feel should be included at some point in the procession.

Can't promise I can work everything in but would like to hear some thoughts that might inspire me into a direction I may not have thought of.

There's NEVER a burn ban in the piney forest, and this year not only do we have our own awesome effigy, but we'll be burning The Freak from Flipside!!

"Physical Embodiment for a Long Night"
This workshop will prepare your body and mind for a long night of dancing and exploration. We will draw on several different movement paradigms, including laban movement analysis, bartenieff fundamentals, clowning, mime, physical comedy, and your own personal experiences. We will build nonverbal communication skills, expressive movement ability, and grounding/centering movements. This course will take your dancing up to the next level and help you have the most fantastic night possible. Kinetic Monkey is a Certified Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analyst, Dancer, Clown, and a member of the Hofmann Drive, a psy-downtempo project in Austin, TX.

Green/Eco/Sustainable Living workshop provided by Chadman. More details to follow as this shall be an interactive/hands on workshop

Yoga led by Lydia Marolda

Vending:
Jewelry by Sadhana Earth Creations, organic soap by Home Grown Sudz - www.homegrownsudz.etsy.com, & organic soap, jam/jelly & crochet work by Ronnie. Tom Mimosa will be selling his unique soap made from mimosa hostilis root bark. It has medicinal properties and it great for skin irritations/ailments.

We are also encouraging all those who have hand drums to bring them out. We would like to have a community drum circle for the hour leading up to the start of the music on Saturday night.

A sanctuary will be provided for those who wish to get away for a little while and find their inner peace.

Cost:

$25 for both nights
$20 for Saturday night

The gates will open at 6PM Friday night, and close at 3AM Saturday morning. The gates will re-open at noon on Saturday, and close again at 3AM Sunday morning. Arrive early for the best camping spots.

At this meeting we will mostly concentrate on defining the role of the Batcave and how it communicates with the LLC.

Other items that may be covered (time provided) are: sound, art, community outreach, city planning, leads, effigy. Regular meetings will be occurring in the near future once the Batcave's mission and MO are established.

The current Batcave membership is WayWard, Peg Leg Pete, Major Tom, Simple Civilian, Boots, Geo Phagus and Road Rash.

LOST: Black Long Sleeve Shirt

On Sunday night around 3am I found a cute girl and boy laying in a bikini and shorts respectively on a tarp near the ashes of the effigies, looking very cold. I gave them my favorite long sleeve black shirt to stay warm under and asked them to return it to French Camp in the morning, but they never came. I think the girl may have been Lindsay? Please return my favorite shirt, ya'll!!

yes it is true love is what i share with you all

my heat has learned to grow bigger and bigger to be able to accommodate so many wonderful people . people i would have never allowed to become such a beautiful creative part of my life . i never want it to change.

this weekend has proved to me that the land we have chosen is VERY capable of being a fantastic site. --weather seems to be the major issue. there needs to be an element of cold (yes C.O.L.D. you can take a touch of credit here but unintended). i had been poo pooing since last year....but as it turned out it really was just personal drama that was keeping me from being free to enjoy.

i had the absolute best time. so many people getting involved . i felt like we were really owning the event with Frenchy really creating a great vibe from the get go. i LOVED the fire procession. i was disappointed to hear some thought they could not participate ....grrr i will just have to be that MUCH more vocal in getting people to get involved in hte procession....but not bad for our (and my) FIRST procession. i have enough confidence now to be apart of a larger one - (still gonna practice)

the effigy went off great ms.mys was perfect -- i actually will get involved next year--and compete---SEAN SPARKS throat singing next year a MUST!. the temple was beautiful... LOVED The unintended opening of the flower!!!

i feel like i met so many new people . and developed some fairly new relationships into full fledged relationships...

thank you THANK YOU THANKYOU for putting on such a great event. i will be reveling in the beauty of this weekend for several weeks. my body is buzzing. mmmmmmmmmmm

Ugh.

But, In order to motivate me to actually start life again, I will provide a few pros to NOT being at a burn event:

* Eating a meal at which your hands do not serve as both your eating utensils and your napkin.
* Walking into a bathroom that doesn't already have so much shit in it that you can see it plainly, without a flashlight at night. "Man, it smells like shit in there".
* Air Conditioning.
* A shower.

Much love to the Frenchies, the honorary Frenchies, and the occupants of hotel French Camp alike.

Fuck You, French Camp. My dick is super-sized! Your dick is like two fries!

Now, I must shower and go to work. Yes, work. Like, a job that doesn't involve walking around in the dirt while intoxicated pretending to do something useful.

Sound Camp questions...

I know there has been discussion about who is bringing sound but talking to Eyeore last night I found out that there are 5 Sound camps registered.
I believe some of those are probably small sound (like mine 2 Mackies maybe a sub or two) but the suspicion is 2 or 3 of them might be larger sound systems.
So the first question I have is out of those who will be up and running Sunday night???

Secondly if someone has a small one they are planning on bringing would you want to collaborate on a party Saturday after the burn???
I would rather not add a sixth sound system to the mix (though the enjoyment Onerio and I would have on informing Ese of it might be worth it :-) ) if we could just better use the equipment available for the enjoyment of all.. except Ese of course ;-)

I am really sad i will not be able to attend yur lil'gathering in the woods. i just moved here from good ole' salt lake and have only heard the best things about the very strong texas burn community. i got to meet some great folks on the playa this year and can't wait to start creating some wonderful things and happenings with y'all...and yes...i'm still so new to austin that i am even typing with a texan drrrawwwllll....it's fun!

i really miss my salt lake family too!

so...have fun out there...make art and love...and keep me in touch when you get back to this great city...i have been spending lots of time in the greenbelt and around the lake/river thingy...oh...and i finally got a job i'm psyched about!

i still have a salt lake number but am living in my sister's place in barton springs area...

as i've stated in previous posts....Our camp (FEMA) is leaving for Myschievia on Tues. 10-8. We have asked for early arrival, but that is for Weds. to set up our camp then assist others any way we can. we are traveling in a small RV and need somewhere to park on Tuesday night. Does anyone know of a good free place nearby? We will be travel coming from Lamesa, TX near Lubbock and will be coming through the DFW area. Any help is greatly appreciated.

PLEASE PLEASE VOLUNTEER

As of right now it's about 2 weeks to the event and the volunteer rosters for Gate and Greeter and sadly empty.

Remember everyone - we cannot run this event without you! Be a participant not a spectator :)

And here's some math for ya ......

To run Gate and Greeter as it has been severely pared down (to allow everyone maximum time on the field) it takes 144 person hours. As ticket sales stand right now, if everyone volunteered an hour we would not have enough volunteers.

And note that this does not even START to take into consideration all the OTHER volunteers needed for Ranger, Mischief Makers, etc.

So PLEASE PLEASE stop for a moment to consider signing up for a shift. The shifts are 3 hours - find 3 people and flip a coin for which of you are taking it ... Or everyone in your theme camp get together and pick a couple people to do a greeter shift (maybe 2 if you're a large theme camp).

Theme camps - I especially need your help. You have the best lines on communication for folks. A little arm twisting may not be out of line here ;)

OK - that was my shamless guilt ridden beg for help. Volunteering up top and then going back to main field is like getting to come home twice!!

Trailer for Rent

Most of you who went to Flipside and camped with Lick-n-Suck saw the Trailer (4' x 6', 3' side walls) my sister and I own. We've decided we won't be needing it for Myschievia (we are using a truck). So if anyone wants to borrow it to take stuff down this coming work weekend and/or to Myschievia let me know. If you want US to haul it then we ask that you pay for half our gas down there and back.

pretty much sucks on the administration side ... so PLEASE don't let it stop you from signing up...

1. I forgot my password. It asks you for your user name. I gave it the correct user name but it didn't recofnize it.

2. I went to sign up as a NEW user. Gave it my user name. IT said it already existed. WHAT?

3. Registered a NEW user name so I could edit the WIKI. Sent an authorizaion sign up to my email. When I go back and click on the authorization and sign in ?? ... UP POPS A BLUE BOX SAYING INVALID LOGIN ..... but, it's all a lie because in the top right corner it tells me I am logged in.

Who coded that?

Work Weekend News

Report from the 9/20 Work Weekend:

Present were: Tripod, SoccerMom, WnB, Geo, RoadRash, Eeyore, Boarhead, Button, Distract-Sean, Winter, Mediocre Matt, Skwid, 2 kids, and of course Apollo. Camping spots were cleared, firewood gathered, fields mowed, and roads began to be marked and graded. 12 people worked about 7 hours on the land for a total of 84 man hours. In non-land-related work: the Ranger tent was erected, the effigy work was continued, some theme camps were placed, and the land contract was signed. At dusk, fire was spun in the burn field during a low dense fog; we can't wait to see the pictures. Apollo wants to eat morning glory sparklers.

The last Work Weekend will be October 3-5. ALL HANDS ON DECK! We'll have effigies and temples to finish, an Arc to erect, signs to make, roads to mark, holes to fill, brush to clear (think your camp site), and whatever else it takes to make Myschievia 2008 happen this year. We'll even have extra port-a-potties to use, hurray!

Kids and dogs are welcome to work weekends, as long as they can play nice with Apollo (our very large canine camping companion).

RFID Chip for newbs

Myschievia has now grown to the point where we need to seriously think about RFID chipping the participants-- especially the newbies--for their own safety. The land is rugged and the vegetation dense. Without some central way of tracking people there is no way knowing who may be lost, wandering off past the perimeter. We should also link participants bank account information so we can once and for all streamline the terribly inefficient process of exchanging cash for a bag of ice.

So after feedback from the community, we've decided to attempt a rather lasse-faire approach to things.

1) Hosts list number of spots available
2) Guests mark off a spot at greeters for a camp and then are directed to them
3) Hosts welcome the guests and make them feel welcome during the weekend
4) Guests go home with a greater understanding of burner culture and hopefully the collective is a bit better off

We'd like to use this opportunity to get interested newbies situated around seasoned veterans so that they can learn by example, feel like they are being included and also have a chance to keep an eye on what our incoming population of people is like.

Because there is no single resource for what being a burner is, or what our culture encompasses... we're going to leave all of that up to you. Take on as much or as little of an explanation of what you think 'our world' is as you choose.

So what we expect of you us simply to be nice to them, treat them as a welcome neighbor and attempt to include them in the community some how. Guests will be given directions to your camp, you should place them someone in the vicinity you feel comfortable with. Keep an eye on them throughout the weekend, give them tips on how to handle their burnables and other trash. Make sure they have some lighting at night. Simple things.

I'm going to make a rather chupa-esk sign to go at greeters that will have the list of Hosts and number of guests they can take with spots to mark off guests as they are matched with hosts.

I didnt start this thread to debate it. I dont want to convince you or bring you over to my side and I dont want you to persuade me to yours.

I just joined this tribe and came across the big long thread about kids at burn events, and I was really surprised to see Pizza Smut mentioned in reference to the kid issue. As historian of the esteemed Pizza Smut I wanted to clarify some points.

Halfway through building our shack in 07, several SUVs descended upon our camp and both Rangers and LEO approached and asked who was in charge. Sober, and hyped up from dust and hard work, Rob raised his hand. They proceeded to inform us that the structure (with porn images decoupaged inside) was viewable from the street, and had been viewed all morning by passersby. We said, "Sirs, we are about to put the roof and door on." But they said we would have to either post a guard/security at the door of the shack 24/7 or keep it locked (shutdown). We all decided that felony charges were not worth skating around, so we put some of our more expensive gear in there and basically had an excessively large locked storage room for the rest of the week.

One of the issues brought up by Rangers and LEO was children. They specifically told us that children might enter the structure. We tried to reason that we would never allow a child to go in, and none had gone in the previous (05) shack, but we had to agree that is was a possibility. If a child had gone in the structure, they said, they could charge Rob with child pornography charges. We locked that place up pretty quick (but not before resentfully finishing building it out so that it wouldn't blow away).

So if there is anything to be learned it is this: build your stuff quickly, and discretely. I have come to learn that the NTXB event is a different animal, so the circumstances re: children are very different. But I didn't post this to proselytize, there is already a thread for opinions on that matter. Mostly, I just wanted to give a shout out from Pizza Smut. We're planning to represent at Myschevia, and be back in BRC in 09.

Hurricane Ike, Abandoned Kittens

Our neighbors abandoned prior to hurricane ike... just left them outside to fend for themselves... so we scrubbed them clean of fleas and brought them in to the disgust of our two cats. Now we don't want to just turn them out - we want to find homes for them.

There two males about 12 weeks old... litter trained... NO LIE the sweetest kittens I've ever seen... They've obviously never played with the human hand as a toy, so they don't attack hands at all... no scratch marks... we've had them in the our computer room / dj room for a over a week including during the actual hurricane and they've been the best behaved kittens... they're not destroying anything, amazingly...

yes, I'm selling someone on adopting these Hurricane Ike rescued sweeties... I don't want them to wind up in a shelter... these are indoor/patio cats who love attention... PLEASE HELP ME FIND A HOME FOR THEM! Please be sure you know these people. I'm turning to you the burn community to open the door to their new home. I promise their new owners won't be unhappy.

circuit bending happening next week

Anybody want to help make mutant kids toy insturments? I'll be having a few people over for a glitch and bitch night of mutating toys at our place some time next week. Probably on Tuesday starting in the early after noon and ending around 10pm. I have some supplies (switches & knobs, wire and 1 soldering iron) No experience required, just bring some battery powered insturment that could be found at thrift stores. All insturments will be made to hook up to a mixing board. And can be played on our P A at Myscheivia in our yet to be registered new theme camp. No more Whiskey Lounge. Gotta do something new. Post back if you're interested in checking it out this Tuesday. With other dates to follow. Leading up to scheduled concert performances at the event which you could play your intruments in.

Tickets now cost $55 for adults, $27.50 for children ages 3-12, and 2 years and under are free. (The price went up on September 5). Ticket sales will end at midnight on October 5. There are NO comp tickets (even the organizers pay), and no ticket sales at the gate.

Work Weekends

To prepare Armadillo Acres for Myschievia, we traditionally do a few work weekends before the event--it gives us a little discount in the land rental fee. If you come, you'll be asked to sign a waiver that's good for one year on Armadillo Acres. Mostly we work, but we get to play a little too, and it's a great way to familiarize yourself with the terrain (and find your perfect camping spot) before the event. This year, because gas prices are so high, we need to plan our Work Weekends out in advance so we can carpool and save money. We recommend arriving on Friday night, because the best time to work is in the mornings before it gets hot. The 2008 Work Weekends will be:

September 19-21: Mow, fill holes, finalize theme camp areas, put up the giant army tent that becomes the Batcave during Myschieiva. We will be sharing this weekend with the DFW Hashers, who have an event on Armadillo Acres the following weekend and will most likely be preparing for that. Don't worry-- several Hashers are also Burners, and we all get along just fine.

October 3-5: ALL HANDS ON DECK! We'll have effigies and temples to finish, signs to put up, and whatever else needs to get done. If you can only make it to one Work Weekend, come to this one.

Kids and dogs are welcome to work weekends, as long as they can play nice with Apollo (our very large canine camping companion).

Lead Changes

This week Nurse Du Jour passed the MEAT torch to Serena, who just returned from doing Medical at Black Rock City and had a great time doing it. Happily, we will still see Nurse Du Jour at Myschievia, but her schedule only permits her to stay for two days. Therefore, she felt that MEAT Lead would be better handled by someone who could be there for more of the event.

Also this week, Taboo handed the City Planning reins to Eeyore, as he will not be able to attend Myschievia this year. And he would like to clarify that it's because of work, NOT because his wife won't let him go. (Uh-huh, sure.) So now you theme camps have to bribe Eeyore to get the primo spots.

Bought 2 tickets today!

I just bought 2 tickets and I'm ready for another burner experience. I think I might let Mr.powers tag along, but this one is my ride and we're doing it my way. Completely last minute, thrown together, no projects, no assembly required, plug-n-play, do as much as you can with what little you bring, little effort with big return... time to teach this guy how great it can be to be a lazy, procrastinating, three-dimensional, innovative thinker! We're going to dance nekkid in the woods and find our spirit guides. Bring on the noise, the bugs, the dangerous wildlife, the rain, the inevitable injuries, and any other shit storm that may come. My only expectation is that there isn't going to be any freakin' playa dust besides what is left in our camping gear!!

Myschievia 2008! Let me know how I can assist in any way with this event... I love to help!

OK.....

I don't know where people got the idea that Myschievia was like summer camp. When did we start having "quiet hours??"

THERE ARE NO QUIET HOURS AT MYSCHIEVIA. I personally LOVE the Sunday-at-7am cacophany that's become a fine Myschievia tradition! If you don't like it, the Survival Guide says your choices are to wear earplugs or move to the Quiet Zone. You're welcome to ask your neighbors nicely to tun it down, but honestly....what do you expect if you choose to camp on the field near the effigy??? When I camped on the Esplanade at Burning Man, did I bitch because my tent was between a raver camp and a 24/7 live band stage? No! Why?? Because we knew what we were getting ourselves into. (Plus we were so tired, we slept like babies every night.)

So, I'm putting this out there as fair warning.......if you're coming to Myschievia to get some sleep, DON'T camp on the lower field.
If you do, you will NOT like the music I play at 7am!

This Sunday Bar B Q

Gypsy and myself, will be having and impromptu potluck style Bar BQ this Sunday. We will be eating around 7 and spinning some fire after the sun goes down (9ish). If you plan to eat bring a dish or get something in town to bring. And this is BYOB For those of you that are doing the myshevia work weekend we are located at just about an hour west of Armadillo Acres, so if some of you don't want to make the long drive back to Dallas in one night we have a big yard feel free to set up a tent or crash inside (warning it is hot inside) if you have questions msg me,. Feel free to show up anytime Sunday evening, and gypsy will be posing a map to our house since Google and map quest doesn't give clear directions

Orfunner update---road closer notice and alternate route

Duby just called and asked me to inform everyone that Creek Road (the road you turn onto from 290 in Dripping Springs) is closed. To get to Rec Plant, all you need to do is continue down 290 three more streets past Creek Road and take a left on Roger Hanks Parkway instead.

This road meets up with Creek Road just a little way down (you'll see the T-intersection with Creek Road on your left). Since you would normally turn onto this road from Creek Road, you can just continue straight ahead.

I'm only on the Events list, so can someone please pass the word to the other lists so everyone is aware of the road closing? Thanks!

orphunners: i need your help!

hey everyone, sunkyst just called and asked me to reserve him a spot for his system, down by the dam. he's not arriving until saturday night, and wanted me to try and keep a space for his sound rig close to the water (about where they were at decomp), and let everyone setting up down there know that it'll be loud on sat night onward.

i have no idea how to do this by myself. i plan on bringing a tarp, maybe making a sign--because i don't want to have to sit at the spot and run people off all day. i ALSO don't want to piss anyone off, so can people who read this please try and help me out by spreading the word if you happen to see the spot? it's all in the name of sound! thanks a million, burner peeps. i can't wait to party witcha this weekend!

Adopt - A - Burner?

I know this has been done at other events before, in one incarnation or another.... I'm wondering how much interest there is in giving it a go for Myschevia. As many of you know.. there are always integration issues (decomp), and as Myschevia is still a smallish event, it might be good to get things started in the right direction before things start getting out of hand.

If there is enough interest from some of the big theme camps in participating... I am offering to spear-head the effort to setup an Adopt-A-Burner program for Myschevia this year....

So.....

If you are involved in a theme camp, or simply feel that you are established enough that you wouldn't mind a couple more people in your group... please let me know.

My vision is:

Theme camps/groups will "adopt" small groups of newbies...... I'm willing to take 2 or three...

People will declare themselves as first timers and volunteer to join the program at the greeter station... greeters will give them directions to a participating camp....

I will provide you with a small welcome kit to give them.... Ear plugs, condoms, wet wipes, toilet paper, ashtray, trash bags, blinky or two.... you get the idea... keep it small & cheap, but to the point.

Set aside a small area with enough room for a couple tents, welcome the newbies into your group... help them assimilate. Invite them out when you go on rampages, encourage them to get involved. Say something when they absentmindedly but not necessarily on purpose flick a cigarette butt..... don't let them get away with "I'm going to pick it all up before I leave". Pretend they are your good friend from college that your trying to show the ropes...

Anyone up for it?

Okay, I can't do what I did for Flipside. I kept going back and forth, back and forth, and by the time I realized "OMG, I want to go to this and relive the beauty and the magic" yea, my boss wouldn't let me take the weekend off. Plus, there were other issues at hand, but I'd rather not get into it now.

So, since I'm not blessed enough to go to the playa this year, and I miss my burner family, I'm taking the plunge and heading to Myschevia. No going back now- I bought my ticket already!

I'm reemerging from the shadows, and since I am taking the semester off from school (blame it on the economy, my student loans got rejected), I don't have to worry about that either. October is a long time away, and my new job is pretty flexible.

Now, which one of you beautiful theme camps wants to adopt me? (I saw that "Adopt-A-Burner" thread. Can I play too??) I'm a good camper, I'll help. I'll even cook some.

Questions About Myschievia

I've been to about three Burning Flipsides
And was wondering how Myschevia compares with Flipside?

I guess i'll tell you about who I am. Well i'm an artist. Deep introverted Thinker, Athlete. I can also be extroverted but this quickly wears me down. Like in athletics i've always been a sprinter... and in social situations... I sprint as well. When I go to the mall I leave as soon as possible... I'm not totally introverted, when I was young I was kinda loud in elementary school. I know how to have a good time, with another person. I know how to joke around. I'm better one on one than in groups. I'm better going deeper into things than skating on the surface. I quickly get board of the plain surface.

I would say i get my energy from creativity...
But also from collectivity, factions wear me down.

I don't really like making statements though I only do that when I'm kinda angry, and usually regret it, even if well intentioned.

What's Myschevia all about ? Does it have any underlying philosophy? Myschievia sounds like Mischievous...

Playful I'm OK with - obnoxious delinquency I get enough of that narcotic from Hollywood movies and culture.

Would you say I would fit in at Myschievia?

I would primarily go do meet new and friendly people. Although introverted I'm a very social animal.
After i've recharged... I simply can't wait to meet people my age... weather spiritually or physically
My social skills may be lacking...

All in all I would say I'm pretty conservative in a non-ordinary kind of unique way.

Thats another thing whats the age range at these events.
Many people single? Many people married? Many old, Many young?
Majority Male, Female? ....

I just don't want to feel like I'm getting into something where I don't belong.

And another thing... I have few friends.
Perhaps there is a camp who will adopt a wanderer?

While I do need time alone, I don't want to go if I am camping all by myself as a complete stranger to everyone the whole time.

Anyhow

Central AC help?

Does anyone know how to check a capacitor on a central AC compressor? If that's all that's wrong then I can afford to repair it. Otherwise I'm screwed. The AC repair guy hasn't called me back yet, so I thought I'd check with ya'll. Let me know. I have two window units to get by in the meantime.

OT: Veggie Oil?

Does anyone work at/manage/own, a restaurant that could supply me with used veggie oil? I will probably need about 10-15 gallons a week maximum. I'm willing to pay a little for it if necessary. I'm considering turning my VW diesel into a griesel, but want to first see if I can get a reliable supply of waste veggie oil.

Fire Performers

Myschievians love fire, and we'd like to see more of it at our event! Whether it's breathing, eating, spinning, hooping, or anything that uses flame, Myschievia wants to be known as an event that encourages responsible fire performers and gives them an outlet to strut their stuff. Prior to the Saturday burn, we will have a Procession featuring our fire performers. Keep watching this space for more information about Procession and how you can be a part of it.

This year we've adopted a Fire Performance Safety document, based on professional standards and real-life feedback from many helpful firey folk!! Special thanks go out to Rhino, Monkey, Jai, Boarhead, Eeyore, Creative Motion, American Fire Artists, the North American Fire Arts Association, and Home of Poi for all their tremendous help and resources. It is our hope that this document will evolve to help form good habits within our ever-growing circle of fire, as well as keep ourselves from getting burned-- physically and legally! Hello fellow fire fanatics!
This is an automated reply. Please join our tribe and stay tuned for updates on the upcoming NFPL Championship and tubing campout to be held Sept 26-28th on the beautiful Guadalupe River in New Braunfels ,Texas.

We are currently seeking DJs who may wish to promote themselves by providing music for the competition in exchange for the spotlight. We will need a link to review their music and their contact info. If you intend to use an independent DJ or band for your music, weather live or recorded, that may wish to be promoted and entered as an independent , there will be professional scouts attending the event who will be seeking musicians for future gigs. Pass the wordand help your musician friends get promoted!

We are also seeking judges for the duration of the event. If you or someone you know would be a good , unbiased, and fair judge,and may have expertise in performance art, martial arts, staging events, and especially the fire arts, let us know. We would like to receive a bio about them and why they would be a good judge. Entrants will be scored on technicality, form, costuming, stage presence, originality, musical accompaniment, and professionalism. Judges will not be allowed to perform in categories they will be judging.

Prices are $40 per person/per night and includes Membership to the NFPL for one year, entry into the championship, camping ,and tubing and shuttle service on the river. For Spectators, $30 per person/per night includes Membership to the NFPL for one year,camping ,and tubing and shuttle service on the river.Its gonna be a great time, so come out and enjoy what is sure to be a great time and great show.

For Championship entrants, there will be many male , female , pair, and troupe, categories to choose from, dependent on what fire tools you exhibit and number of performers in each routine. If you have a fire tool that is original or not listed , let us know and we will include it/them. If you use props such as structures or pyrotechnics, let us know the nature of these features and any space requirements.Please read our profile and be practicing your routines. You may enter as many categories as you wish.If you have your own music you wish to use in performance, please have it on CD or Ipod and ready to go. We will post entrant forms to bring with you to the show, so stay tuned!

Thank-you all for the amazing number of responses we have gotten. Space is limited to 2500 people at the event , so RSVP ASAP! We will try to answer all your questions in our updates. Tickets will be sold at the gate and it is recommended to let us know how many in your group , both performers and spectators, will be attending.

Tickets on Sale Now!

Step right up and get 'em while they're hot! Buy your Myschievia tickets at www.ntxb.org.

Tickets will cost $45 for adults, $22.50 for children ages 3-12, and 2 years and under are free. Buy yours early if you can, because the price will increase to $55 and $27.50 on September 5. Ticket sales will end at midnight on October 5.

The price has gone up by $10 due to Myschievia now lasting 5 days instead of four. The extra day costs $5 per person for the land rental fee and another $5 for insurance and portapotties. (The price increase should have happened last year when we first became a 5-day event, but we didn't realize it until after tickets had already gone on sale, and it made for a very tight budget last year.) NTXB is committed to keeping ticket prices down, so we will do all we can to continue to hold our event at this price. There are NO comp tickets (even the organizers pay), and no ticket sales at the gate.

Kids at Myschievia

We want to thank all Myschievians for their responses to the survey, and for the thoughtful and (mostly) respectful discussion on Tribe and on the email lists. NTXB, LLC voted 3 to 1 to allow kids at Myschievia, under the following conditions:

1) The parent or guardian must sign a waiver for their child.

2) The parent or guardian must fill out an application, similar to a theme camp application, that will detail how the child will be supervised at all times. This is primarily to ensure that the parent has thought through his or her decision, and will be mentally and physically prepared to care for the child for the duration of the event.

3) Myschievia will be zoned this year, including a Red-Light District for activities considered to be adults-only. Children under 18 will not be allowed in the Red-Light District for any reason.

4) The Rangers will have a copy of the child application on file, and will be properly trained on what to do if they see or hear about an unsupervised child. Unsupervised children (and their parents) can be evicted from the event.

We hope that these conditions will satisfy the concerns that were voiced. Traditionally, we have never had many children come to Myschievia, but the parents who choose to bring them need to be cognizant of their responsibilities -- and just as importantly, the community needs to be respectful of the parents' decision. As between any parties, any conflicts need to be brought to the Rangers for a peaceful resolution.

Theme: Burning Bridges

This year's theme and effigy will be "Burning Bridges." Simple in concept, powerful in metaphor. A large ornate bridge will represent the times we felt that a match flicked behind our back while we walked away was better than repairing the structural integrity of the relationship. Burning Bridges can symbolize not only leaving behind old relationships, but also old ways of doing things, unhealthy patterns-- it lends itself to very personal interpretations that are limited only by the participant's imagination.

When the effigy burns, colored fire will represent different types of relationships. Red will represent Love, Purple will represent Work, Green will represent Friendships, and Blue will represent Family.

The community will be invited to interact with this effigy and place burnable art on the bridge throughout the event. The landowners request that only non-toxic materials be used.

Myschievians at Decomp: THANK YOU

For those who missed it: it was HOT like Flipside, except we only had to endure two days of it. The creek was nothing but two puddles on either side of the dam. The pool of course was Hippie Soup. The Myschievians had two camps, Camp Big D was the nice camp with four air mattresses in the shade, and K-Hole which morphed into Camp Middle of the Road because that's where the shade was. The best part was we wouldn't move, and cars had to back up and go around us.

But the BEST best part was, Myschievia got pimped out BIG time. About 400 came to Decomp. We gave away all 250 of our "Coming sooner than you think" condoms, and whatever I could find of last year's stickers. HUGE thanks to K-Hole; y'all truly rock out with your cock out when it comes to whoring our event. Everyone we talked to by the end of the event had already gotten a condom or sticker, and some took handfuls to give away elsewhere. Everyone we talked to was jealous of all the stories that had been trickling down to Austin, and they all want to see the event where Drinkwhore puts glow sticks in his ass and SoccerMom stays sober for days at a time. Oh, and Sloan has to Ranger this year. !Bob wants to come and get himself kicked out of people's camps.

People are getting excited, including me! Tickets go on sale this week as soon as WnB gets over his food poisoning. LLC will post its final decision about kids in the next Firecracker, which will be put out when tickets go on sale. Leads have all been selected except for City Planning, which had no takers. I'll post more about that in the next Firecracker as well.

Transformus No Longer a Regional Burn

This is from our friends the Dirty Southern Burners, some whom y'all met at Flipside. Transformus is a GREAT event, and I hope they won't let the crappy year they've had destroy it. FYI Myschievia is not an "official" burn, and we prefer to remain that way. -Geo

Dear Mysterians,

It is with great sadness and discomfort that I announce Transformus is no longer an official Burning Man Regional Event. The Transformus Board of Directors received an e-mail from Andi Grace of Burning Man last night stating that there had been complaints made by the community. The decision to change Transformus' s status as an official burn was based on the BOD's lack of Civic Responsibility and Transparency. An official statement will be released from Burning Man soon entailing all of the details in depth and their reasoning. It will also lay out the process necessary to regain or retain our status as a sanctioned Regional Burn.

The Transformus BOD would like to let everyone know that at no point in time did we mean for any of this to happen. We did our best to make sense of the madness that has occurred this year leading up to Transformus 2008. We apologize to the community for our break down in communication and our botched ticketing system. We are just a group of normal people, who tried to the best of our abilities to bring you a successful event. We are only human and the lack of Civic Responsibility and Transparency was never, at any point in time, meaningfully sought out.

As many of you know, several members of the Transformus BOD have resigned. We thank them for their time, energy and devotion to this event. However, moving forward, there will be a lot of changes that will take place after Transformus 2008, and we are looking to this community to foster and implement those changes. The BOD opens the gates to the community as to where the future lies in running this event after Transformus 2008. For those of you who have wanted answers,decisions, and change, I ask you to step up to the challenge of making Transformus the way the community wants it to evolve. There are still just a few BOD members, including myself, that will help facilitate the means to making the situation at hand better after the event. Until that day and time, I respectfully and earnestly ask all of you to bring positivity and not negativity to our community.

Finally, for all of those in the community who wanted action and change, here is your opportunity to do something. The event is less than a month out ,and we can come out of the darkness and produce a great event that is fun, meaningful, transformative. ..not just a party in the woods. To all of you who are still coming and making it to Transformus 2008, we want to personally thank you for believing in the magical place known as Mysteria. Despite all the drama, anger, and confusion, we will rise to make Transformus 2008, the best one to date.

Dark Skies…

So many things to say so little words.

About 150 people. It was hot. Damn hot. No humidity but about 110 each day. Land was great. About 10 miles from meadview AZ and 15 miles from Lake Mead.

This was a great group of burners. They reminded me of North Texas burners in the fact so many knew each other! And also how they accepted outsiders like me and Katy!

They had to move it from BLM land about 2 months before the event due to BLM deciding that a good screwing up the backside without lube is what our Govt should do to burners. For those that think it’s a good idea to be associated with Burning Man just talk to those that put on Dark Skies. Due to being a “Burning Man” regional BLM decided to charge 45,000 dollars to have a small event on our public land. Now if it had been a motorcycle rally that tears the land up they don’t charge as much. Needless to say those putting it on with input from local burners decided that was too much and to find private land!

Kids. There were a few under 18 and over 14? A brother and sister. The camp they were with? Porno for Pirates! Was heartwarming to hear one of the parents tell them they had to stay in the trailer after dark due to porn being shown in there dome! The kids were not an issue for me and Katy.

There was a dog and a bird! No issues there! (the people that did bring both had an AC trailer and were inside it for the most part) I am not advocating dogs or animals just relaying facts at this point.

There was no “gate” and no “greeters”. Didn’t need em! There were plenty of warning signs that it was a ticketed event and no trespassing. You checked in at porno for pirates dome signed a waver there and got your arm band. They had under 21 and over 21 colored bands.

There was no effigy. Me and Katy didn’t notice till we had been there 2 days! We did not miss it! There was many many fire spinners! And a burn barrel. Also they got a fire permit from local city. The fire Marshall was out every day. He did have people move gas away from vehicles, make fuel dump etc. They have a burn ban in effect year round basically! From what I saw they were great to work with. I think this says tons about working with local community.

No police ever were there. All they have is sheriffs in the county and we never saw them.

No sound issues. Although WnB and Weid will laugh at us. Me and katy arrived a day early. When they showed us were Lick n Suck money shot was to be they pointed out that the techno stage was going to be 50 feet from us. No problem we said! Ooops! About 4 am Friday morning they decided to up the base so loud you could fell it in your chest! We watched the sun rise that day! We also learned that putting the bed in the back of the expedition and shutting the doors makes it damn quiet! Great lesson there!
They also had a live band stage set up about 200 feet from the techno stage! Either the live band stage was playing or the techno stage was spinning. Not both at the same time. Worked great I thought. They had set times when each could play. They also had quiet time. Or maybe quieter time.

No ice sales. Or rather they did like myschievia. Someone went into town to get ice. Or you could go into town and get ice! Also porta johns were cleaned once while we were there and they rocked! They had I believe 6 porta johns. They arrived Thursday and were cleaned Sat about 1pm?

They had a field trip to lake mead for some swimming on Sat. was about 15 min down the road!

I got real good vibes from the whole event. No one took themselves or the event too serious. It was very laid back. There was only one ranger on duty the whole time! She was the lone ranger. And she had fun also! (I believe everyone mentioned that was not fair or right, the other 2 rangers had issues and could not make the event) Also there was no one that needed rangering!

I could go on and on and on…so if you have specific questions just ask!

HIV Charity Event

So Friday June 29th the Tarrant County Interfaith AIDS Network is having a get together for Get Tested Day. This group gives free HIV test with no id required, the test is done with either a fingerstick or mouth swab and you get the results in about 30 min. They are looking for ppl to come perform and to attract a crowd. Even if you don't have an act please come out and support the cause.The network has been up and running for about six months and they need all the help they can get in getting the word out. I think this is an amazing service and would really like to see the Dallas burners come to Ft Worth :) I should be getting the time of the event monday and I will post the info then, I just thought I'd put feelers out there so you crazy kids could mark your calenders.

Pimpin' Myschievia at Austin Decomp

Myschievia tickets should be going on sale right around that weekend, so Decomp will be a perfect time to promote the hell out of Myschievia. Here's a plan that SoccerMom, RoadRash and I are hatching:

We're bringing back SoccerMom's Pad Thai, except now it's going to be brought to you by the cooking team of SoccerMom and RoadRash. Consider it a sneak preview of the new Myschievia theme camp....Camp Cabbage is now Camp Pad Thai-Me-Down. I'll be making little toothpick flags that say "Myschievia" and "Camp Pad Thai-Me-Down" to put on top of the heaping plates of noodle-y goodness. There will of course be veggie and meatie versions.

Wakenbake, do we have time to make more stickers?

When and Where

After discussing possible dates at the last Town Hall meeting in January, a poll was sent to both the Planning list and the *Myschievia* Tribe. According to the survey, which 52 Myschievians responded to:

56.9% said Oct. 9-13
19.6% said move it to the spring
9.8% said they didn't care when, just do it.
5.9% said Nov 6-10
5.9% said Nov 13-17
3.9% said Oct 2- 6
0% said January 15-19

So it's official: The dates for Myschievia 4.0 will be Thursday October 9 through Monday October 13, 2008 at Armadillo Acres in Hughes Springs -- our gracious hosts for the last two Myschievias.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!!

Kids or No Kids?

For the last 3 years, children under 18 have been admitted to Myschievia under the care of a parent or guardian. However, due to concerns that many activities at Myschievia are geared toward adults, some members of the community asked at the last Town Hall to look at the possibility of making Myschievia an 18-and-over-only event. Currently there are no issues with insurance, the law, or the landowners (reasons cited for banning kids from other burn events), but the LLC wants to hear from you before they make a decision.

How You Can Help

Currently we are looking for Leads or Co-Leads to help in the following areas. Experience helps, but enthusiasm can be substituted if needed. For more detailed descriptions of what the positions entail, see http://www.ntxb.org/index.php?div_page=participate

What's New: What used to be "Myschief Makers" will be split up into City Planning and Site Ops. We will also need a Radio Lead this year. Is an Art Lead needed? If you think we need one and can tell us what you can do to encourage more art at Myschievia, the job's yours.

Gatekeepers- This may be combined with Greeters again.
Greeters- Help the Noobs turn into Myshchievians
City Planning - Set up Zones (Car Camping, Quiet, parking, etc) and place Art and Theme Camps.
Site Ops - Sets up/ tears down infrastructure, fixes stuff, does what needs to be done.
Art Lead - Promotes art
Effigy Lead -- Builds the effigy. Nominees include Wakenbake.
Web Team -- Tickets and ntxb.org updates
Communications Team -- Publishes Firecrackers and Survival Guide
Rangers Lead -- Organizes the Ranger team. Nominees include JuJu.
Radio Lead - We will need help with choosing/ renting/ taking care of a small fleet that can cover 200 acres of not-completely-flat land.
MEATs Lead -- Nominees include Nurse Du Jour.
Fire Safety Lead -- We'd like to train more folks in fire supression. Nominees include Henry.
Ice Lead -- May or may not be busy, depending on the weather this year.

If any of these sound up your alley, send the LLC an email at ntxbllc (at) ntxb (dot) org and tell us what you can do to make Myschievia rock. If you would like to nominate someone else, we'll take it as long as the person accepts. If more than one person wants the same position, we can have co-leads if the folks in question don't mind working together. In any case, NTXB, LLC will make the final call on Leads and Co-Leads. Nominations will close on July 1 and the LLC will announce the new Leads during the following week.

I was there when it was taken Friday night. UnrulyMan had just swallowed a Princess, and she gave him horrible indigestion. (Princesses are soooo gassy.)

What can i do to help?
